Stash of ‘potentially dangerous’ items found by police inside Rangers’ Ibrox stadium before Old Firm clash vs Celtic

A STASH of “potentially dangerous” items was discovered inside Ibrox Stadium hours before Monday’s Old Firm clash.Cops at the powderkeg fixture found the haul, including a baseball bat, in a bin.

It came to light after members of ultras fan group the Union Bears were given early access to Rangers’ ground to place banners ahead of the 12.30pm kick-off.
They were thrown out by police and club staff after a “cursory search” revealed the items.
A source told The Scottish Sun: “There were about a dozen items including a baseball bat.
“Who knows why they were there or who put them there but it’s obviously very disturbing.

“Cops and club staff deserve credit for making the find and acting so swiftly.”
Two men — part of the group allowed in early — were later charged with minor drug offences.
Superintendent Emma Croft said last night: “Police engaged with a group of supporters given access to Ibrox in advance of the Rangers v Celtic fixture.
“During a cursory search, a number of potentially dangerous items were found secreted in the stadium.

We can also reveal Ibrox staff and locals called cops over clashes in the area on Saturday — with reports of “males with weapons” involved in violence two days BEFORE the first derby of 2023, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Supt Croft added: “Shortly before 4pm on Saturday, police received a number of calls reporting disturbances and males with weapons near Ibrox.
“Police attended and there was no trace of any disturbance on arrival.”

Rangers 2 Celtic 2: Kyogo fires late leveller to earn Hoops draw in dramatic New Year Old Firm derby

RANGERS kept their slim Premiership title hopes alive at Ibrox but they were left sickened by a late Celtic leveller. There were plenty of New Year fireworks in the blockbuster fixture as both sides slugged it out in an action-packed draw.
Tavernier celebrates after scoring from the spot
    Kyogo scored a dramatic leveller
Gers only had to hang on after they overturned Daizen Maeda’s opener to lead 2-1 through Ryan Kent and James Tavernier.
But a late Kyogo leveller meant the spoils were shared between the two sides.
Things got off to the worst possible start for Rangers when Alfredo Morelos’ blunder lead to Celtic’s opening goal.
The Colombian forward attempted to play a pass in his own half but Maeda snatched it and got the better of Tavernier then Connor Goldson before slotting past Allan McGregor in the Rangers goal.

There was then an injury blow to the Hoops when Greg Taylor was forced off and replaced by Josip Juranovic.
But it did not affect Maeda as he seemed to have the beating of Gers captain Tavernier and he continued to flash crosses into the area.
Celtic were on top at this point but it was Rangers who turned the tables on their opponents.
But despite all of Celtic’s pressure, it was Joe Hart’s turn to be tested. Alfredo Morelos hassled the English stopper which resulted in a deflected ball finding it’s way to Kent who made Hart stretch all the way to keep his effort out.

Fashion Sakala had a good look at the rebound but couldn’t find the net.
Rangers finished the first half the stronger of the two sides but could not find a goal despite the best efforts of Morelos who spurned two golden chances.
He was found in space from a corner twice by Tavernier, but missed the target both times from close range.
Kent was the man to make up for his mistakes however as he scored early on in the second half.
    Rangers player ratings
Allan McGregor: This was the Rangers keeper’s 40th Old Firm appearance, only Scott Brown has made more this century. Had to settle for a share of the points at Ibrox…6.
James Tavernier: A real mixed bag. Equally culpable for the Celtic opener, he then made amends by drilling home his 100th career goal from the spot. Ended the match with a bloody nose…6.
Connor Goldson: Lucky to escape a VAR call when the ball struck his arm midway through the second half. Great block to deny O’Riley and grew in presence as the match wore on..7.
Ben Davies: Looks far more assured and far more comfortable alongside Connor Goldson. So unfortunate at Celtic’s equaliser after his well timed clearance cannoned off Ryan Jack..6.
Borna Barisic: Way too sloppy early on. His crossing and passing was poor but he re-emerged to deliver a big second half performance. Got forward much more after the break..7.
Glen Kamara: Simply not at the races in the first half. Given the runaround by Celtic, he showed real character to emerge unscathed at the start of the second. Much more like himself after the break..7.
John Lundstram: Like the rest of his team mates, he struggled to get to grips with Celtic’s midfield in the first half. Much improved second half performance before being forced off injured…6.
Fashion Sakala: Played like a man possessed in the second half. Gave Juranovic all sorts of problems and after setting up Kent’s first he won the penalty that led to Rangers’ second. His best display in a Gers shirt…8.
Malik Tillman:  These are the games he needs to influence but sadly for Rangers he was miles off it in the first half. Better after the break and was only denied by a stunning Carter-Vickers block…6.
Ryan Kent: Saw a first half effort tipped onto the post by Joe Hart. The Gers winger then gave the Celtic keeper no chance with the stunning strike that hauled his side level. 7.
Alfredo Morelos: Gave away the ball for the game’s opening goal. Missed two glaring first half headers and STILL doesn’t look anywhere near match fit. Finally hooked with 12 minutes to go…4.
    SUBS:
Ryan Jack: Picked up a needless booking after coming on. Looks as though he still has a future under Micheal Beale…3.
Scott Wright: Injected more pace into the Rangers attack but in the end he and his team mates had to settle for a point..3.
James Sands: Came on late to try and help Rangers see the game through….2
    ANDY DEVLIN

    Celtic player ratings
Joe Hart: Dug himself out of a huge hole when he made amends for his own mistake by tipping Kent’s shot onto the post. Well beaten by Kent and given no chance by Tavernier from the spot..6.
Alistair Johnston: Handed his Celtic debut and an Old Firm baptism of fire. Coped with the occasion superbly and looked like he’d been playing in this fixture for years. Solid debut..7.
Cameron Carter-Vickers: Allowed Alfredo Morelos to nick the ball off his toes in the first half. It was the only mistake he made all afternoon. Towering presence at the back, brilliant block to deny Tillman…8.
Carl Starfelt: Needlessly went to ground to gift Rangers a second half spot-kick. Failed to provide cover for Juranovic who toiled badly at right-back after coming on. Not his best showing…5.
Greg Taylor: Was an injury doubt pre-match as he struggled to shake off a hamstring problem. Landed awkwardly challenging Fashion Sakala for the ball. Unable to continue..4.
Callum McGregor: This was the Celtic captain’s 30th Old Firm appearance. Forced namesake Allan into first half save before picking up the first booking of the match…7.
Matt O’Riley: Perhaps fortunate to escape an early yellow card after catching John Lundstram late. Decent first half showing as Celtic controlled the midfield. Replaced with an hour gone…6.
Reo Hatate: Scintillating second run took him away from Malik Tillman but there were no takers for his cross. Showed skill and composure throughout. Subbed late on as Celtic chased the game..6.
Daizen Maeda: He was a constant thorn in Rangers’ side in the first half. His pace, power and direct running caused all sorts of problems. Took his goal superbly well. Replaced in the second half…7.
Kyogo Furuhashi: When he fluffed a golden chance to put his side two in front it seemed his wait for a goal in this fixture was set to continue. But with three minutes left he rescued a point for Celtic…7.
James Forrest: Remarkably, this was only the winger’s second Old Firm start in three years, such has been the extent of his injury troubles. Good first half, but made way on the hour mark..6.
    SUBS:
Josip Juranovic: Brought on after just 20 minutes. Caught ten yards the wrong side of Sakala as Rangers drew level. Never looked comfortable at left-back..3.
Liel Abada: Helped hail Celtic back into the game..4.
Aaron Mooy: Undoubtedly shored up the Celtic midfield which was being overrun in the second half….4.
Jota: Did brilliantly to set up Kyogo’s priceless equaliser…4.
Georgios Giakoumakis: Great strength to force the ball through for Kyogo..4.
    ANDY DEVLIN

He made the most of an opportunity on the left and curled an effort past the helpless Hart.
And then the tables completely turned when Sakala earned his team a penalty which Tavernier stuck away in his usual fashion.
There was a Celtic penalty shout after Goldson was accused of stopping the ball with his hands while attempting to block a Carl Starfelt effort from a corner, but referee John Beaton waved away claims and VAR was not used.
Rangers held on valiantly and kept out waves of late Celtic pressure as the time ticked away.

But Kyogo eventually broke down the Rangers defence when he struck late to earn a point for his side.

McGarvey thanked fans for their support before Celtic’s Premiership match against Hibs on October 15th.
McGarvey starred in the green and white hoops between 1980 and 1985, making 245 appearances and scoring 113 goals.
He won two Scottish Premier Division titles, enjoying back to back successes in 1981 and 1982.

An icon at Celtic, McGarvey is also a St Mirren legend.
It was with the Paisley club that he broke through into senior football, being signed up by Sir Alex Ferguson from junior club Kilsyth Rangers in 1975.
He scored 17 times to help St Mirren to the First Division championship in 1977.
McGarvey’s brilliant form attracted the attention of Liverpool and legendary boss Bob Paisley, and he moved to England for a fee of £270,000.
He was unable to make a first team breakthrough at Anfield and he moved to Celtic ten months later for the same transfer fee.
He was, at the time, Scotland’s most expensive footballer.
McGarvey’s time at Parkhead ended after five seasons and he’s fondly remembered for his final match for the club.
He struck the winner six minutes from time as Celtic came from behind to beat Dundee United at Hampden to win the Scottish Cup Final.
McGarvey would rejoin St Mirren and he enjoyed further trophy success as he won the Scottish Cup again in 1987.
All in, he played almost 400 times for the Buddies and scored 125 times.
They wrote on Twitter: “St Mirren Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Frank McGarvey at the age of 66.

Given his international debut by Jock Stein, McGarvey was also capped seven times by Scotland.

Rangers send scouts to watch Wolves defender Dion Sanderson but face competition from Birmingham in transfer tussle

VERSATILE Wolves defender Dion Sanderson is being monitored by Rangers as boss Michael Beale chases new talent. The Scottish giants are keen on the 23-year-old, who can play centre-half or right-back and is in their price range.

Sanderson is on loan at Birmingham and was watched by Gers’ director of football Ross Wilson and top scout John Park last week.
Ironically, Sanderson played at QPR last season just before Beale briefly took charge of the Hoops.
Birmingham want to buy Sanderson if they can agree a fee.
So the Gers need to make a rival cash bid.

However, Sanderson picked up a potentially troublesome hamstring strain in Friday’s 1-0 loss to Hull.
Birmingham head coach John Eustace provided an update on the loanee, saying: “Dion came off with a slight strain to the hamstring, I think.
“That’s something we’ve got to look at and he will be getting scanned at the weekend, I’m sure.
“We were looking to maybe make a change at half time but we had to be careful on the changes because obviously there were a couple struggling, and that delayed our decision-making on that. He ended up going off.”

Chelsea to ‘accelerate transfer interest in Josip Juranovic’ amid Reece James injury worry for Premier League giants

CHELSEA are set to accelerate their interest in Celtic star Josip Juranovic, according to a report. The Croatian full-back is a man in demand after a stellar showing at the World Cup with a host of clubs plotting a January move for the right-back.

And one team who could now step up their interest are Premier League giants Chelsea, who suffered a major injury setback in Juranovic’s position last night.
The Daily Mail claim that the West London side will ‘accelerate’ their interest in Juranovic after Reece James went off against Bournemouth last night.
Juranovic’s performances have seen him linked with the likes of Spanish giants Barcelona and Manchester United too.
Blues star James was forced off with a knee injury after only just making his competitive comeback from injury against Bournemouth last night.

The English right-back cruelly missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s Qatar squad after picking up a knee injury against AC Milan in the Champions League.
And he was forced off just shy of the hour mark as the Premier League got back underway this week, in his first appearance after his injury.
Celtic are open to listening to offers that are expected to come in for the Croat in January after contract talks stalled before the World Cup break.
Hoops chiefs are braced for bids and look to have already prepared for life without Juranovic after completing an ealy move for Canadian full-back Alistair Johnston from Montreal CF, who arrived in Glasgow just over a fortnight ago.

I never wanted to join Rangers but my dad threatened to PUNCH me if I didn’t agree transfer, Italy legend Gattuso says

RINO GATTUSO has revealed his father threatened to punch him if he didn’t sign for Rangers as a kid because of the money on offer. The Italian World Cup winner is now manager of Valencia, but was famously brought to Ibrox by the late Walter Smith in 1997, before he was shipped out to Salernitana a year later in a £4 million deal because Dick Advocaat didn’t rate him.

The midfielder went on to a glittering career including World Cup glory with Italy and two Champions League wins with AC MilanCredit: Scottish News and Sport
From there, he went on to move to AC Milan and won two Champions Leagues, two Serie A titles and that 2006 World Cup with his country.
And, in an interview in Spain, he admitted had no intention of signing for Rangers as a 17-year-old, until the intervention of his father.
He recalled: “I didn’t want to go to Glasgow. I had played two games in Serie B and was promoted to Serie A with Perugia, where I played eight games without a contract. Then I played the Under 19s Finals with Italy.
“One day my father comes and tells me that a representative of Glasgow Rangers has come to town and has offered a contract to me.

“I didn’t want to leave and I told this to my father.
“He told me that the money they were offering was so much he couldn’t even write down the total figure. He told me it was four times his total earnings in his lifetime.
“When I still said no, he said he would punch me if I didn’t accept it, so I signed for Rangers!”
“I went to Glasgow and I didn’t know anyone and didn’t have two words in English.

“But after two weeks, I looked more Scottish than a Scottish player. I trained three or four times a day, I would go to the gym for hours.
“I built myself up with this mentality. I knew I didn’t have great technique, but I prepared myself to mentally kill my opponent. I have dedicated my life to football.”
In total Gattuso featured in 49 Rangers games – starting 36 after the contractual wrangle with Perugia.
He scored five goals including his first in the UEFA Cup against Strasbourg and despite developing a reputation as a firebrand midfielder, he was never sent off in Scotland – but did amass 12 yellow cards. More

Rangers star Ryan Kent ‘is target for Southampton’ as transfer fee revealed

RANGERS boss Michael Beale has already stressed that he wants to tie Ryan Kent down to a new deal at Ibrox – but he now faces a battle to keep him.Even with Kent being out of sorts this season, his performances in Europe over the last three years have attracted suitors from south of the border as they look to lure the wing ace to the Premier League.
Ryan Kent could be off to the Premier LeagueCredit: Getty
There has been long-term interest from Leeds United who’ve been credited with tracking the 26-year-old for the last two seasons, among others.
And with six months left on his current Ibrox deal, Beale could well be up against it if he is to convince Kent to put pen to paper when he could walk away from Ibrox for nothing in the summer.
The Gers boss previously spoke of his desire to work with the winger and hopefully convince him to commit his future to Rangers.
Speaking about Kent and Alfredo Morelos, he said: “With every player, he’s got to be value for money, hasn’t he?

“I think the most important thing at the minute is the two boys get on doing what they do best — and that’s playing football.
“I believe I’m the ideal person to manage both players (Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos) because of the previous relationship and having seen them at their best for Rangers.
“They can get that back very quickly, so let’s take another review in the coming days.
“But I’m really optimistic they can go and prove they should be here.
    Most read in Football
“In terms of finances, they have obviously got very good agents. We’re very strong on our side and we’ll probably meet somewhere in the middle.”
But Beale’s hopes of retaining Kent could have taken a further blow today after another Premier League side, Southampton, emerged as the latest side to enter the race for his prized asset.
Saints boss Nathan Jones is said to be ‘targeting’ a move worth £5million for the Rangers winger, according to the Daily Mirror
The St Mary’s side currently sit second bottom and are eyeing some more experienced players to help their young squad survive the battle for the drop and it has been suggested that Kent could help give them that balance.
Southampton were also last night credited with an interest in Celtic whizz kid Liel Abada after his stunning start to life at Celtic following his arrival last summer.
But Hoops chiefs are prepared to rebuff any interest from the South Coast side and any other Premier League clubs by opening talks over fresh terms with the Israeli winger next month.
