Former Rangers star Jermain Defoe slapped with six-month driving ban after speeding charge

FORMER Rangers star Jermain Defoe has been banned from driving for six months after he was caught speeding. The 40-year-old was clocked doing 56mph in a 30mph zone in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, on December 28, 2020.

Glasgow’s Justice of the Peace Court was told Defoe was behind the wheel of a Range Rover at the time.
Prosecutor Ryan Watson said the striker was snared by a speed camera in the area’s Mill Street around 11pm.
The ex-England international – who also played for West Ham, Tottenham and Sunderland – pled guilty to the single charge of speeding.
Paul Mullen, defending, stated: “He apologises to the court for a momentary lapse in judgement.”

The lawyer added that Defoe, then of Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, was dropping off a female colleague and was unfamiliar with the area.
Mr Mullen also forwarded references to JP Colin Marchment for charities that he is involved in.It was revealed that Defoe already had 11 penalty points on his licence.
JP Marchment added an additional four points of the offence – disqualifying him from driving for six months under the totting up procedure.
The former footballer, now of Chigwell in Essex, was also fined £480.

The Crown accepted a not guilty to a separate speeding charge of 75 miles per hour in a 50 zone.
Allegations stated Defoe was driving on the M74 in Glasgow’s Polmadie on April 9, 2022 behind the wheel of another Range Rover.
Defoe already had previous driving offences.
He was banned from the road in 2009 and he was up in court a year later for being caught with a phone while driving.

Celtic 5 Morton 0 – Kyogo and Mooy score twice as Turnbull finds the net to send Hoops through Scottish Cup clash

EFE AMBROSE was once a title hero for the Celtic fans. This time it was the Scottish Cup he was cruelly appreciated by them – penalised for a hand-ball for Aaron Mooy’s first and then blundering badly for Celtic’s second.
Kyogo scored twice for the HoopsCredit: PA
Ange Postecoglou’s side are through to the fifth round of the cupCredit: PA
But you had to feel for the well-travelled Morton stopper.
The VAR dictated penalty decision was harsh in the extreme.
Overall, though, it was hell back in Paradise for the affable Nigerian.
Mooy later claimed a second while Kyogo Furuhashi also celebrated a double – moving to 20 goals for the season – and David Turnbull netted again for a ruthless Celts display to seal a 24th victory from 26 domestic games so far.

It was four changes for the champions from midweek but it was hardly a weakened side put out by Ange Postecoglou given the depth of his squad.
Three internationals came in – Mooy, Turnbull and Daizen Maeda – plus the £3.75 million Alexandro Bernabei.
Giorgos Giakoumakis and Cameron Carter-Vickers were again missing entirely through injury while Greg Taylor is another fighting back to fitness.
It was as tough as it could get for Imrie’s Morton – fifth in the Championship and five games without a win.
    Most read in Football
But they had an impressive 2,500-strong support backing them, the largest for domestic opposition this term.
And they were excellent until a shocking penalty decision – not even claimed by Hoops players –  sent them on their way to an ultimately crushing defeat.
But a sensational repeat of their legendary 2013 League Cup win at Parkhead – courtesy of a Dougie Imrie penalty and ironically from a hand-ball by Ambrose – was never on the cards.
On a poor looking pitch Celts captain Callum McGregor fired a shot narrowly wide after five minutes and you thought it would be completely one way traffic.
But then Morton took over, keeping the Hoops pinned in their own half and often their box.
Lewis Strapp’s long throw-ins caused discomfort for a home defence once again including Yuki Kobayashi.
And the left-back should’ve opened the scoring for ‘Ton in the eighth minute – left with a clear shot at goal from just 12-yards following a neat one-two with Robbie Crawford but only managing a scuffed effort which was easy for Joe Hart.
But it was good pressure from the underdogs.
Thejn the roof caved in for them out of absolutely nowhere.
A Liel Abada shot had taken a deflection, come off Ambrose and gone straight to keeper Brian Schwake – and NOBODY thought anything untoward about it.
    Play had carried on.
Suddenly, though, ref Kevin Clancy halted proceedings and it was announced there was a VAR check for a possible hand-ball and penalty.
After three minutes and Clancy racing across to check the TV monitor at the tunnel, the whistler confirmed it was a spot-kick with pictures actually showing the ball had, strictly speaking, come off the hapless Ambrose’ right hand.
But it felt a poor decision.
Mooy stepped up and blasted an 18th minute right foot shot beyond Schwake.
There was no way back for Morton after that.
And just three minutes later veteran Ambrose – 169 games for Celtic over four years with four league medals – was once more at the heart of his former club’s second goal which truly knocked the stuffing out of the visitors.
His shocking touch from a Grant Gillespie pass, right in front of the Morton box, was seized on by Abada who quickly slipped in Furuhashi – and the Japanese ace clinically shot past Schwake.
It was a howling mistake from the Nigerian who, truth be told, has had a career littered with them albeit also with plenty of glory.
Morton responded immediately with a dangerous ball across the Celtic box from Jai Quitongo which found Strapp six yards out. But his shot was brilliantly blocked by Alistair Johnston.
Then we got told there was a VAR check for a possible hand-ball – presumably against Johnston – but that only took seconds to be dismissed.
Celtic resumed complete control and Abada, twice,  McGregor and Maeda all had efforts on goal before a superb third goal was notched.
A neat passing move ended with Abada and Furuhashi combining and from the striker’s lay-off Turnbull brilliantly passed a right foot shot into the corner from 20-yards for a second goal in as many games.
Postecoglou stated pre-match the Scotland international was going nowhere and had a big part to play in the second half of the season. This was further evidence why.
Schwake saved from the lively Abada but Celtic’s fourth came in first half added time.
Furuhashi pounced at close range with an emphatic shot after some intricate Hoops play.
It had taken him until May of his stunning debut campaign with Celtic to reach 20 goals, admittedly injury also keeping him out for nearly three months.
But to have already managed the tally is still outstanding.
With the tie finished Postecoglou sensibly took off Furuhashi and McGregor at the break and put on Sead Haksabanovic and new capture Tomoki Iwata for a debut, the fourth Japanese player tasting action.
Celtic, of course, never ease off under their manager.
Mooy had a right foot shot come off the post and then Schwake pushed away another fine Turnbull shot.
Celtic attacked at will and Schwake comfortably smothered a close range Johnston effort just after the hour.

The final half hour was deadly dull as a contest as Postecoglou used it for game time for more subs, James Forrest and Matt O’Riley, and Mooy struck an 84th minute fifth goal.

Rangers have parked Ryan Kent contract talks reveals manager Michael Beale

MICHAEL BEALE says stopping contract talks with Ryan Kent has helped him hit top form.Discussions over a new long-term deal have been put on the back-burner to allow Kent to focus on his football.

Beale hopes Kent will sign a long-term deal at IbroxCredit: PA
The winger is out of contract in the summer, but Gers boss Beale is hopeful he will commit his future to the club.
He revealed: “At this moment in time, I just want Ryan to focus on football.
“I don’t want to put him under pressure or be speaking to his representatives about contracts and finances and where his head is at and where our head is at when we are in the middle of a three-game week when we have to win every single game.
“So you park some things until you get a break and that’s what we’ve done.

“I think that has helped Ryan focus and I think he;s playing really well. The front three in particular, the numbers in the last seven or eight weeks have been pleasing.”
Meanwhile, Beale insists he’s refusing to get carried away ahead of Rangers’ Scottish Cup trip to Perth this weekend.
The Light Blues boss has gone eight games unbeaten since taking over at Ibrox but he’s still far from satisfied.
Beale insisted: “I think that we’re heading the right way.

“There’s another game now and I’m aware we’re a big club and there’s always a disaster waiting around the corner.
“We can’t come off it and we’re still trying to push consistency in the way that we play.
“Consistency in team selection too because then the relationships on the pitch are stronger.
“I don’t think it’s that complex. If players play together a lot their understanding of each other is good.
“If they like the way the team’s playing, if you collaborate with them and get their opinion on the way the team’s playing and then you go out and train it, you drive the standards.
“I think, generally, I start from a position of strength.
“It’s a fantastic football club and it’s got strong players in the country that we play in.
“My job is to try to get some harmony and cohesion. We’ve managed to do that the last few weeks, but we’re far from where I want us to be if I’m honest. We’ve still got quite a long way to go.
“Having said that, we’re dominating possession and scoring goals which is a good sign so if we can tighten up on some moments where we’re a bit anxious then we’ll be alright.

It was during this hot streak he met wife Donna – but fears over his marriage to the Glasgow beauty therapist surfaced earlier this month after they spent Christmas apart.
The former Sunderland, Spurs and West Ham striker was in St Lucia for the festive season while Donna changed her social media profile names back to maiden name Tierney, and unfollowed her 40-year-old husband online.
The pair were wed at a lavish £200,000 event in Berkshire last summer – with pictures of the big day spread throughout OK! magazine.
However mystery surrounds the ceremony as no record of the nuptials has been sourced locally, or in Glasgow.

Now images show Defoe back in Scotland – a year since leaving Rangers – and clutching a shirt of his former team.
He dropped into Motherwell-based charity The Miracle Foundation to provide signed memorabilia for a fundraiser in March.
The footballer was all smiles as he posed with the CEO and founders of the charity which supports children and young people affected by bereavement and trauma with one-to-one counselling and art therapy.
Amongst the shirt haul up for grabs at the Crowne Plaza event are tops from Defoe’s playing career including Tottenham, England and two from the Glasgow giants.

The charity wrote: “The very lovely @iamjermaindefoe with our communications manager @mandyraynerr and founders of the charity Urfan and Mariam.
“Jermain popped into the office to hear all about the work we do in Scotland and our plans for the future.
“He also signed a few strips which will be up for auction at our black tie event!”
Defoe captioned his Instagram story with praise for the work being done.

He wrote: “Great to meet @themiraclefoundationscio last night and hear about all the work they do with young people and children affected by bereavement and trauma.”
The striker also has a charity foundation of him to support homeless, vulnerable and abused children in his family home of St Lucia.

Rangers closing in on Todd Cantwell as transfer timeline revealed for Norwich City star

RANGERS are closing in on a deal for Norwich star Todd Cantwell. The 24-year-old is one of Michael Beale’s top January targets.
    Rangers Manager Michael Beale
    Todd Cantwell of Norwich City
The Rangers boss is hoping to secure the midfielder on a three-year contract, with Blackburn Rovers also keen.
SunSport first revealed Beale’s interest in Cantwell last weekend.
Beale said: “He is a player with a lot of ability and there will be a lot of interest in him. He is a player I like a lot, as I said last week.
“Out of respect, I can’t really say much more than that. You are not far off the track with what you are all insinuating.”

A deal for Cantwell could be struck early next week, with Beale also tracking Everton midfielder Tom Davies.
The Ibrox gaffer added: “It has progressed well in terms of where it is at.
“As soon as there is news we will let everyone know. We are eager to let everyone know. It will take a little bit of time.
“My bit is done, if that makes sense, and now it is over to other people to finalise things.
    Most read in Football
“As far as I can see, I am really pleased with the way two or three things are going.
“They are heading in the right direction.
“I didn’t think anyone would be in before this game, and I didn’t want to disrupt the group either.
“The group is quite settled at the moment.
“Hopefully in the next week or so we will see one or two things.”
As sporting director Ross Wilson works around the clock to get deals over the line, Beale has urged fans for patience.
He added: “They have to be the right people. There have been meetings.
“I have not had much time off, if that makes sense, because I have been busy with Ross and everybody else.
“I’m pleased with where things are, it is positive. These things are never as fast as fans want.
“The window opens and they want the guy there the moment the window opens. It doesn’t always work like that.
“But I am positive. If I don’t think they are right for us longer term, and that longer term is for us to fight for trophies, to compete well in Europe and do well, then I don’t want anyone here short term.
“That is probably ruling out anyone that will be coming on loan for six months.
“As I said previously, I want people that I can build around.
“There is going to be a change in the summer of some faces.  Everybody is aware of that.

How Chelsea could line up against Fulham with injury crisis but will Joao Felix be cleared to play in time?

CHELSEA are faced with an injury crisis as they head to Fulham for a London derby.Graham Potter’s side make the short trip to Craven Cottage on Thursday hoping to bounce back from two defeats in four days to Manchester City.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will return to the squad after missing the trip to the Etihad, but Chelsea are still without several other key players.
Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling will also miss the game.
Potter said: “Pierre’s fine so he’ll be in the squad for the game tomorrow.
“Christian’s going to be out for a couple of months we think. Hopefully it will be less, but that’s the timeframe there.
    read more on football
“We think Raheem will be out for less time than Christian. We’re still evaluating the actual extent of it, but hopefully it will be less than that.
“Reece was out on the grass today, not training with the team but training on his own.
“N’Golo’s had his first couple of days out training on his own as well, although he has still got a long, long way to go before he is back fully.”
Potter is yet to name an unchanged team since becoming manager and is therefore likely to shuffle his pack once again.

With Edouard Mendy out injured, Kepa Arrizabalaga will keep his place in goal.
Meanwhile, the back four in the Prem game against City performed well, so Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly Marc Cucurella are in line to keep their places.
Into midfield, Denis Zakaria should return after he dropped to the bench on Sunday and could be joined by Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount in the middle.
Going forward, it’s touch and go whether Joao Felix has been registered in time to play.
The Portugal star is set to have a work permit meeting on Thursday, while Potter said: “It was good to get him in training today and we will see about playing on Thursday.”
Providing he is eligible, he could start the game considering he played 72 minutes against Barcelona last weekend and is match fit.
If Potter doesn’t throw him straight into the action, Aubameyang could lead the line and be supported up front by Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz. More

Awkward moment Rangers hero Ally McCoist met ex-Celtic star Roy Keane on a deserted BEACH during World Cup

ALLY McCOIST and Roy Keane were two of the punditry stars of the World Cup in Qatar. But that doesn’t mean that the two ITV hosts wanted to spend each minute of every day with each other.

In fact, the opposite was probably the case as the former Rangers icon and one-time Celtic star attempted to make the most of some down time during the global showpiece.
McCoist had a hilarious story ready today as he recalled the awkward moment the two men met each other on a deserted beach.
Asked specifically on working with Keane, McCoist told TalkSPORT: “I had a belter with him during the World Cup.
“We had an afternoon off, and I thought I am going to nip down the beach for an hour.

“I like a wee swim, I will go down to the beach and have a wee swim.
“I walked down to the beach, which was just down from the hotel.
“And the beach, I am telling you, there was NOBODY there.
“It wasn’t a massive beach, there were maybe 80 or so sunbeds.

“And there’s one sunbed, away up on the left hand side, Roy sitting on it and he’s got the earphones in.
“I’m thinking there’s absolutely no danger that he wants to see me.”
McCoist had a mischievous thought of rocking up on the sunbed next to him and playing heavy metal band Rammstein – but thought better of it.
“Initially I thought I would pull up my sunbed right next to him, turn up my Rammstein, and see where it takes us!
“I nearly did but I thought he would kill me!
🏖️ “I went to the beach and the only person there… Roy Keane.”❌ “I’m thinking there’s absolutely no danger that he wants to see me.”👍 “He looks at me, puts his earphones in and stuck his thumb up.”Ally tells us of a beach encounter with Roy Keane at the World Cup 🤣 pic.twitter.com/RtNgSQCVmO— talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) January 10, 2023

“So I walked up to him, all the way along the beach. And he’s sitting there and has got his headphones there.
“He opens one eye, looks at me, removes the left ear [phone].
“I say, you will be delighted to hear, I am not going to sit next to you, I’m going to leave you alone, I just wanted to say hello.
