Schools allow kids to turn up LATE on Monday if they stay up to watch Euros final – will your youngsters get a lie-in?

SCHOOLS across their country are ready to give pupils a lie-in on Monday morning after England’s Euro 2024 final.England take on Spain at 8pm on Sunday, with the titanic clash set to end later than many young football fans’ bedtimes. Some lucky children will be able to start school late on Monday because of the Euro 2024 finalCredit: AlamyThe Three Lions set up the showpiece game against Spain on Sunday after Ollie Watkins scored a sensational 90th-minute winner.Gary Spracklen, who is in his seventh year as head teacher at the Prince of Wales school in Dorchester, Dorset, said the start time was “quite late” for his pupils aged between three and nine years old.He said he “didn’t want the excuse of being tired” to affect their schoolwork on Monday, so the school will start at 11am rather than the usual time of 8.45am.“It just made sense to us, we wanted to join the whole nation in getting behind our national team,” Mr Spracklen added.Read More in FootballThe head teacher said his pupils have been supporting the team during the competition in Germany. He said: “There was universal praise for the idea and we’ve been supporting England right through the tournament, through qualifying, and we made films to support them.“We made a Vindaloo video with the children and the parents at home, we’ve got all the nations’ flags at the front of the school.”He said the “only negative” was that not all parents had been given the same time off by their bosses. Most read in Euro 2024The hopeful head teacher added: “So I think they were going to take my letter into their places of work and see if they could get a lie-in as well.“I think a few schools in the area are doing it, I think it’s spreading and I think as that excitement builds others will probably reflect and hopefully join us in making that offer to their young people”“People are embracing the moment.”Sven-Göran Eriksson’s Rallying Cry for EnglandSam Kaye, head teacher at Wooburn Green Primary School in Buckinghamshire, is also offering children a “soft start” where pupils can come in until around 10.30am instead of the usual 8.30am.“The children were obviously very excited – a lot of the children have been following the Euros,” he said.“We’ve done sweepstakes in some of our classes.”Mr Kaye said the reaction from parents had been “positive all round”.However, students at Digby the Tedder County Primary School in Lincolnshire, who wrote a letter to their head teacher asking for a later start on Monday, were not as lucky.Alison Crawshaw said: “The children wrote amazing letters and their persuasive techniques were wonderful.“However, I did explain to the children that even though it is an incredibly exciting time and we would want to celebrate and be proud, whatever the outcome, I wouldn’t be able to authorise late starts for other sporting events and this wouldn’t be fair and inclusive.”It comes as Three Lions fans are hoping for a bank holiday if England end their trophy drought by winning the Euros on Sunday. However, there has been no official plans by the Government that there will be a national bank holiday.READ MORE SUN STORIESFans across the country have been Owen Hargreaves ‘amazed’ by ‘old school’ Man Utd player and says fans will want to see more of him

OWEN HARGREAVES has been left amazed by one “old school” Manchester United player after the Red Devils’ win over Real Betis. Following a tricky first-half, United pulled away from their Spanish opponents to give themselves a commanding 4-1 lead for the second-leg.

Much of the damage had already been done by the time Facundo Pellistri came off the bench for Antony with eight minutes to go.
He made an immediate impact off the bench which led directly to Wout Weghorst’s goal.
Almost straight after coming on, Pellistri received the ball directly from Bruno Fernandes’ out-swinging corner.
Despite Real Betis defenders charging towards him, the 21-year-old dribbled around the outside past two men before sending a drilled cross back in.

Scott McTominay’s shot was blocked before Weghorst pounced on the rebound.
That was the high point of Pellistri’s cameo performance and it left BT pundits and former United players Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves impressed.
Asked by presenter Jules Breach why United fans don’t see him more often, Hargreaves said: “I don’t know.
“I was amazed how quick he was. A lot of the guys, like Jadon [Sancho] and Antony, they like to dribble and slow down and come inside, but he doesn’t want any of that.

“He just [likes] getting on the outside, old school, just sprinting past people. And it’s good to see because when he does that, the centre-forwards know when the ball is going to come in, where the other wingers take a lot of touches.
“Scholesy’s right, that was a brilliant cameo. I think United fans would love to see more of him.”
The Uruguayan winger signed for the club in 2020 and has been tipped as a potential star for the future.
But he has found game time very difficult to come by this season with only four appearances in all competitions this campaign.
Reports had suggested he could move on loan in January but Pellistri eventually stayed with the club. More

A curriculum shake-up will also encourage schools to increase PE lessons to a minimum two hours each week.
The Saints-supporting PM said: “Last year the Lionesses’ victory changed the game.
“Young girls know when they take to the pitch that football is for them and, thanks to the Lionesses, they too could be a part of the next generation to bring it home for their country.”
England women’s captain Leah Williamson added: “The success of the summer has inspired so many young girls to pursue their passion for football.

“We see it as our responsibility to open the doors for them to do so and this announcement makes that possible. This is the legacy that we want to live much longer than us as a team.”
It follows the Let Girls Play joint campaign by the Lionesses and the FA following their Euros 22 triumph.
Schools will be told that where it is wanted they must offer girls the same activities as boys – also including rugby and cricket – in lessons and after-school clubs.
Ministers also want teachers to ring fence at least two hours a week for sports, although they cannot dictate how much of the curriculum it takes up.

But Education Secretary Gillian Keegan insists it would be “great for both physical and mental health” as well as teamwork.
A £600million pot of previously announced money will be used to help heads lay on sports over the next two years.
A further £57million funding will be used for schools to keep their pitches open after lessons for pupils to use More

The drink, only stocked in ASDA, is hugely popular with kids and teenagers – but now a school has banned it.
KSI today shared an email from a headteacher of an unnamed school to its pupils, saying they will be punished if they’re caught with the £1.50 beverage.
    It reads: “Hi everyone,
“Prime drinks are now a banned item. DO NOT bring them into school.
“They will be confiscated if found or seen, and you will be sanctioned with a -3.
“A reminder to you all that selling any items on school premises is not allowed and will lead to a suspension from school.”

It is not known why the drink, which is made up of 10 per cent coconut water and 825 milligrams of electrolytes, has been banned.
But KAI is already plotting his revenge – and claims he will be playing a prank them, as well as several other schools.
To his 8.2million Twitter followers he wrote: “A school had the AUDACITY to ban Prime, leaving their students dehydrated.

“To counter this blatant wrongdoing, we’ll be sending a truckload of Prime to this school and many other schools.
“Just retweet this tweet to represent your school to get some Prime.”
Just one hour after posting the Tweet, it had been shared nearly 8,000 times.
