    Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo caught the fishing bug in his hometown of Madeira
Ronaldo must know a thing or two about fishing coming from Madeira.
The Portuguese city is the capital of sport fishing, where a keen fisher will look to catch marlin, wahoo and giant bluefin tuna.
That’ll make a lovely seafood stew, for sure.

You wouldn’t have guessed that the Man City forward loves to angle.
Back in 2014, the Argentine took up fishing when he was out injured and he still hasn’t given up his favourite pastime.
The 33-year-old, who retired in December because of heart problems, caught a whopper on a recent trip to Esquina in the Argentinian province of Corrientes.
    David Beckham

Never one to miss out, Becks showed off his greatest catch in 2016.
The Manchester United legend posted this image on Instagram fly fishing and catching a Icelandic Salmon.
He’s also been known to be a fan of sea and coarse fishing.

When he was a young boy, playing football wasn’t his only love.
At the age of 10 he loved joining his grandfather Keas Schensema for fishing trips in Moordrecth.
He even managed a small catch in this throwback pic.
    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Ibrahimovic, now of AC Milan, probably considers himself to be the best fisherman in the world.
And with this pike catch, few would argue that he’s got angling skills too.
Ibra boasts his own private fishing lake at home in Sweden, while he also has a tattoo of a koi carp on his back.
    Lee Bowyer

The former Charlton and Leeds United hero loves a tackle off the field as much as he did on it.
The Birmingham City boss runs his own carp fishing lake named ‘Etang de Bows’ in France, which he bought in 2014.
Maybe that’s what’s calmed him down over the years!
    Robin Van Persie
Van Persie once caught a shark on a family fishing trip to Turkey
While on holiday in Turkey in 2015, the former United star took his family fishing.
Unbelievably, his bait managed to catch a shark while he was deep sea fishing.
He wrote on Facebook: “Unaware this was going to be our best fishing day ever!!!
“What a catch! Nobody got hurt and of course we released the shark.”
    Tony Hibbert
Ex-Everton full-back Hibbert is so obsessed with fishing he now makes a business out of it.
In 2013, he bought the 33-acre Lac de Premiere, a carp fishery in the village of Villiers-en-Prayeres, northern France.
And since retiring from the beautiful game in 2016, he’s devoted his time in running a venue welcoming fisherman from all over the world.

JT’s close pal, Bobby Zamora, has been a huge admirer of fishing for a long time.
The ex-QPR and West Ham striker, who is now a club ambassador at Brighton, loves a Bobby dazzler – with his biggest catch a 39lb 12oz carp.

    David Seaman

The Arsenal and England legend might be football’s best angler, having done it for most of his life.
Safe Hands, as he was nicknamed, was skilled at everything from fly to coarse fishing.
Surely he’s never been left flapping by the river bank?
    Paul Gascoigne

Last, but certainly not least, Gazza often went on trips with Seaman during Euro 96 on the advice of manager Terry Venables.
But famously, Gascoigne fell off jetty into a lake near their team hotel before the Spain game in his full England team tracksuit.
Cue fits of laughter from the former England stopper as his mate asked him to pull him out.

Man Utd flops who were a success after leaving Old Trafford following Martial’s move to Sevilla, including Lukaku

PLAYING for Manchester United can be a heavy burden for some players, even the very best. And many find their way again after moving away from Old Trafford to the frustration of supporters.
These former Man Utd stars flourished away from Old Trafford
Anthony Martial, a £56million signing from Monaco, failed to hit the heights expected of him and will be hoping a move to Sevilla reignites his career.
He will be be buoyed by these seven who did especially well after leaving the Premier League giants behind.
From a Uruguayan legend to a Dutch star who later earned a transfer to Barcelona, here are the flops for whom life got much better after leaving Old Trafford.
    ROMELU LUKAKU
The Belgium centre forward is definitely the one that got away.
Often, Lukaku was deemed not good enough by supporters who felt he was overweight and cumbersome.
After cutting a more shredded figure at Inter Milan, where a new diet and fitness regime saw the striker lose 16lbs and get into the best shape of his career, he helped the Serie A club land the title.
That prompted Chelsea to splash £97.5m on Lukaku, although he’s yet to live up to that price tag at the Bridge.

    MEMPHIS DEPAY
In 2015, United shelled out £25m on the Dutch star on the insistence of Louis van Gaal.
But Depay looked lost at sea on our shores, playing 53 times and managing just seven goals.
Two seasons later he was sold to Lyon for £20m, where he rediscovered his form.
In 2021, after scoring 76 goals in 178 games, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer.

After moving to Lyon, Depay has re-emerged for club and country – signing for Barcelona
    ANGEL DI MARIA
It’s not uncommon for Argentinian stars to lose their way at Old Trafford – with Juan Sebastian Veron also struggling in Manchester.
Di Maria was a marquee signing in 2014 for a then-British transfer record fee of £59.7m.
In his only season, he managed just four goals in 32 games and soon fell out of favour with boss van Gaal.
A year later he was sold to PSG for £40m, where he has scored double figures in goals in five of his six seasons, as well as been integral in four Ligue 1-winning campaigns.

    WILFRIED ZAHA
In 2013, United moved to sign Zaha from Crystal Palace for £15m – Sir Alex Ferguson’s final acquisition for the club.
A year later he found himself out of favour under new boss David Moyes and was loaned out to Cardiff City.
Zaha would later say he never felt he was given a fair chance at Old Trafford.
He was loaned to the Eagles, who eventually bought him back for £10m – and he’s gone on to become one of the Premier League’s biggest danger men.

    DALEY BLIND
A lot of Blind’s problems at Old Trafford stemmed from where managers thought he should play.
Was he a left-back? Should he play in a midfield holding role? Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho just couldn’t work him out.
In 2018, the Dutch international returned to Ajax, where he has won two league titles and contributed to the club’s brilliant Champions League run in 2019… playing at centre-back.
And at the Euros he starred for Holland.

    DIEGO FORLAN
Forlan was a costly (at the time) £7m buy for United in 2002.
However, in his first 13 Premier League games and five Champions League matches he was ridiculed for failing to hit the back of the net.
United sold him to LaLiga’s Villarreal, where he was an instant hit scoring 25 league goals and winning the Spanish Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe in his first season.
He repeated that trick in 2009 at Atletico Madrid – scoring a sensational 32 goals in 33 games.

    RADAMEL FALCAO
The Colombian striker, now 35, is plying his trade at Rayo Vallecano where he has five goals in 13 games.
Before that, he was scoring goals at Galatasaray – 20 in 43 games.

But at Old Trafford, on loan from Monaco, he really struggled with just four goals in 29 games, although a serious knee injury and a struggle to initially return to fitness hindered him.
After his Manchester United nightmare, a poor spell at Chelsea followed.
But a return to Monaco helped Falcao find his Midas touch again. He scored 70 goals in his last three seasons with the French giants before continuing his rejuvenation in his twilight years in Turkey.

Gary Neville reveals Sir Alex Ferguson’s ‘slow conveyor belt’ transfer policy was based on three types of player

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Sir Alex Ferguson’s transfer policy was like a “slow conveyor belt” according to his former defender Gary Neville.Unsurprisingly during his 26 years at Old Trafford the boss oversaw a whole host of big name incomings and departures.
Gary Neville discussed Fergie’s ‘conveyor belt’ transfer policy
Sir Alex Ferguson helped developed some of football’s best talents
But there were methods behind the purchases, and evidently the system worked.
Fergie won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two Champions League titles during his legendary spell in the hotseat.
And according to Neville, who was the first-choice right-back during his own trophy-laden 19-year spell at United, transfer policy was split into three categories.
Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast recently, the 46-year-old footie pundit said: “His policy was to promote youth wherever possible, that was number one before he even looked at the external market.
“Number two was to look at the best in the Premier League, those he could trust, and still have growth and be with the club for a long time.
“Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Robin van Persie.
“And then he always wanted emerging international talent that could come over to Manchester, that he could work with and develop into great players.
“Nemanja Vidic, Peter Schmeichel, Patrice Evra, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“He very rarely ventured into the world of buying the complete star, and it’s not far off Pep Guardiola’s tactic with Manchester City right now.”

SunSport also revealed how Neville admits he regrets not heeding Sir Alex’s advice during his ill-fated spell as Valencia manager.
Neville took charge of the Spanish club during the 2015/16 season.
But he lasted just 28 games after picking up only 10 wins.
Neville’s time at the Mestalla is now looked back on as a prime example of bad management.
And Neville himself admits he should have paid closer attention to advice given by former Man Utd boss Fergie.

Reflecting on his Valencia spell, Neville said: “Early on it was clear that some players were unhappy. I should have made big decisions on players that weren’t committed to the club at that point.
“I remember speaking to Sir Alex early on and his advice was: ‘Just get rid of them and protect yourself. Only have people in the dressing room that are facing the same direction as you.’
“But I didn’t listen. I tried talking some players round to staying until the end of the season. But they weren’t happy.
“I ignored Sir Alex’s advice.” More

Brentford new boy Christian Eriksen’s partner Sabrina gave up career to become WAG, mum & best pal to Harry Kane’s wife

CHRISTIAN Eriksen is back in the Premier League, after signing for West Londoners Brentford. The 29-year-old playmaker hasn’t played since suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 back in June.

But during that nearly fatal moment, his loyal love Sabrina Kvist Jensen – who leapt over the barriers to run to his side – thought it was the end.
Peter Schmeichel said Sabrina believed her partner “had died” during the shocking Euro 2020 incident.
The legendary goalie’s own son, Kasper Schmeichel, had to reassure mum-of-two Sabrina the Danish midfielder was still breathing after he collapsed.
The 27-year-old, who has stood by his side for 10 years, moving around the world as his football career blossomed, was by his side when he woke in hospital.
Sabrina sacrificed her own life in Denmark to move to London, ditching her hairdressing career to become a WAG when Christian signed for Tottenham in 2013.

After building a life in London, including a close friendship with Harry Kane’s wife Katie Woodland, she upped sticks again to followed him to Italy when he signed for Inter Milan last year.
The couple, who met when Sabrina was 18, are as devoted as ever and despite Christian’s huge salary of £6.5m a year, they have always shunned the wild parties in favour of quiet dinners with friends and nights out at music gigs.
The couple have shared romantic holidays in Dubai, Tanzania and Malaysia in recent years as well as rubbing shoulders with Danish royalty.
While other WAGS spend their days in beauty salons and shopping in designer stores, Sabrina keeps a low key existence, looking after three-year-old Alfie and his sibling, born in January this year.

Quiet life in a £7m North London mansion
Born in Tommerup in Denmark, Sabrina was 18 and studying to be a hairdresser when she began dating Christian in 2012.
When he signed for Tottenham the following year, she initially stayed in Denmark to complete her beauty course, before following him to London where she briefly worked for a clothing brand.
Christian has admitted that adjusting to life as a premier league player in London was difficult for both of them.

“You have to learn how to cope physically and mentally, but I can handle the pressure and the demands because I live seven days a week for my job,” he says.
“That is very tough for my girlfriend. Of course I would like to go out in the city with her and friends, but it just doesn’t fit in with playing in England.”
In 2016, Christian signed a new longterm contract with Spurs and splashed out on a mansion in a wealthy area in North London, where a five-bed house costs between £7m and £28m.

Even before becoming parents, the couple shunned red carpets and glitzy parties for intimate meals with their closest friends, Harry Kane and Katie Woodland.
Tottenham Striker Harry took the Danish player under his wing as soon as he joined the club and Sabrina and Katie became close friends very quickly.
They bonded further over their pregnancies, with Katie giving birth to daughter Ivy just four months after Alfie was born, and both giving birth to a second child early this year.

On couples’ nights out, before the couple moved to Milan last year, they choose high end London restaurants including Zuma, in Knightsbridge or Aqua Shard – where a steak costs upwards of £40.
Sabrina and Christian also love live gigs, and were spotted singing along at a Major Lazer gig in London before the pandemic. The four friends recently got together for a Bruno Mars concert, in 2019.
Although they swerve the limelight as much as possible, they do make exceptions for royals.
In 2014, they met the Danish Queen Magrithe II at an official bash in their native country, posting a glamorous picture from the event.

Holidays in Dubai and a safari in Tanzania
The couple like to travel and are adventurous in their destinations.
In 2017, before Sabrina fell pregnant, they took an extended break in Tanzania, where they went on a luxury safari holiday, costing around £5000 a head.
The couple were thrilled to see elephants, rhinos and lions as well as enjoying some downtown on stunning golden beaches.
Other pre-lockdown trips have included Dubai, where they were pictured riding a camel, and Malaysia, where they stayed in Kuala Lumpur.
The romantic pair have also taken breaks in Rome and Amsterdam, where they visited Christian’s old Ajax haunts.

Romantic partner born on Valentine’s day
With a birthday on Valentine’s Day, it’s not surprising Christian likes to get a little slushy on his Instagram posts.
Every August he posts an anniversary picture, writing in 2017: “Five years with this incredible and wonderful person.”
In December 2017, the couple announced they were expecting their first child with a cute shot of themselves cuddling, with Chris holding the scan pic and Sabrina wearing a shirt reading “coming soon.”
He wrote: “Mum and dad to be. #proud” with a heart emoji.
And fatherhood has made him even more romantic.
On February 14, 2019, he posted a picture of Sabrina and Alfie with the message: “My birthday, Valentines and any other day of the year crew.”
On holiday last year, he posted a picture of Sabrina kissing Alfie with the words: “Not enough love for these 2!”
In 2021, Eriksen announced the arrival of baby number two – although the tot has never been publicly named.
Sharing a picture of himself with Sabrina, Alfie and the newborn, he wrote: “Family of four.”

    Rocked by fake ‘scandal’
The path of this true love was running smoothly until 2019, when false cheating rumours put a bump in the road.
The couple were forced to rubbish online rumours that Sabrina had cheated on him with married team-mate Jan Vertonghen.
The original tweet spreading the fake news read: “Christian Eriksen’s wife has reportedly been caught having an affair with his team-mate Jan Vertonghen.”
But Christian stood by his partner, answering with a simple “Bulls***”.

The Tweet also claimed the Spurs squad were involved in a bust-up – with Harry Kane involved – attaching pictures of Jan Vertonghen sporting a black eye.
But Jan replied with a series of emojis, including a heart next to Christian’s Twitter handle.
The Sun revealed that the injury was instead from an ‘accidental’ training ground collision with Eriksen earlier this season.
The vicious gossip would test any relationship but Christian stuck by his girlfriend as steadfastly as she has always stuck by him.

In the terrifying moment, when she thought she had lost him, Sabrina’s world looked like it was crumbling.
But now, back in the Premier League, their future looks far more rosy.

Four opponents Anthony Joshua must fight before he retires, including Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder and Dillian Whyte

ANTHONY JOSHUA’s legacy will be defined by the fights he takes, and wins, in the next five years. The former unified heavyweight champion of the world revealed he intends to hang up his gloves before he hits the wrong side of 40.

Two years ago, the 33-year-old told Sky Sports: “Five years left and that’s basically an Olympic cycle.
“I’ve got an Olympic cycle and a little bit more left, so when you see the next Olympics happen is when I’ll be coming to the end of my career and the next generation will be coming through.”
For Joshua to be seen as a true heavyweight great, he must first see off all the remaining challengers in the division.
And there are five men, in particular, AJ has to trade leather with before it’s all said and done.

    Tyson Fury
A fight with Tyson Fury is one British boxing fans have been itching to see for years. And it was in the works until Deontay Wilder won a legal case for a trilogy fight.
But talks were made, so technically all that remained was for a venue and date to be finalised for a potential £500million showpiece.
However, Joshua’s defeat to Oleksandr Usyk scuppered those plans.
    Deontay Wilder
There’s simply been too much trash talk between Joshua and Wilder for this fight not to come to fruition.
The pair were at loggerheads long before Fury returned to the fray, although Wilder hasn’t mentioned his fellow Olympian for some time now.
Stylistically, Joshua vs Fury is a fascinating match-up that has all the ingredients to be an absolute fire fight.
And despite Wilder’s emphatic dethroning at the hands of Fury, there’s still some fan interest in the match-up.
    Andy Ruiz Jr
Like it or not, Joshua still has a score to settle with Andy Ruiz Jr – the man responsible for handing him his first professional loss.
There was no doubting he was the better man in their rematch in Saudi Arabia in December 2019.
But with the score level at one win apiece, can he truly say he’s better than Mexico’s first heavyweight champion without sharing the ring with him again?
And let’s not forget the condition Ruiz Jr – who had clearly been enjoying the high life after his stunning upset win – came in for his second showdown with AJ.
Despite the dominant nature of his Saudi revenge job, Joshua has to run this one back again.

    Dillian Whyte
While we’re on the topic of trilogy fights, Joshua still needs to settle the score with fellow Brit Dillian Whyte.
If you count their amateur meeting in 2009, the series between Joshua and Whyte is level.
One could argue there’s no cause for a third fight as Joshua brutally knocked out The Bodysnatcher in their 2015 showdown.
But given the improvements Whyte has made since that setback, with the exception of his loss to Alexander Povetkin, a third fight with AJ is still marketable.
And I’m sure there’s few things Joshua would love more than to silence his domestic rival once and for all.

Mario Balotelli ‘pays bar owner £1,800 to drive moped into sea wearing only underwear’

MARIO BALOTELLI once paid a bar owner £1,800 to drive a moped into the sea. What’s more, the trundling racer was only wearing his pants as he drove into the drink.
The man shot off the edge after a short burst of acceleration
And the moped slowly sank after making a splash
While most players were busy souping up their fitness levels or sorting out their futures over the summer, the Italian showed why he’s one of a kind.
Balotelli, 31, is said to have paid the man £1,800 back in 2019 to drive his moped over the edge of a marina in Naples.
And the current Newcastle transfer target published the footage on Instagram, showing the crowd that had gathered to watch the daring stunt.
Later on, the striker posted a clip of attempting to start up the rescued moped.
Incredibly, after a few splutters, the engine kicked into gear and it was working once more.
