Neymar and Steven Gerrard feature in amazing Chelsea XI almost signed by the Blues before transfers fell apart

WHEN Roman Abramovich arrived in 2003, Chelsea attracted the biggest names in the game. The Russian poured millions into his beloved Blues, particularly in his earlier years with the club, before he was forced into selling the club when he was hit by government sanctions.

Chelsea could have signed a whole host of superstars
He quickly set his stall out in his first few seasons at the helm by bringing the likes of Arjen Robben, Claude Makelele and Didier Drogba to West London.
That’s not to mention highly-rated young Porto coach Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea have hardly struggled for trophies in the following years, scooping five league titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League triumphs. And it is astonishing to think that they could have had even more.
Yes, the Blues were within touching distance of signing a whole host of other superstars.
And here is an XI of those that could have brought yet more silverware to the already overflowing Stamford Bridge trophy cabinet:

    GK – Alisson Becker
The Brazilian stopper briefly became the most expensive goalkeeper in history when he signed for Liverpool in July 2018 for £66.8million, but things could have been oh so different.
In Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea thought that they had secured a long-term replacement to their legendary, Champions League winning goalkeeper Petr Cech.
But that summer, the Blues became resigned to losing the lanky Belgian to Real Madrid, and Roma keeper Alisson shot to the top of their wishlist.
As Brazil’s incumbent No1, coming off the back of an extremely impressive year with the Italians in which he helped his team to the Champions League semi-finals, Alisson was hot property.
But despite Chelsea’s best efforts, he opted to move to Anfield instead, later explaining his decision to FourFourTwo magazine.
He said: “I chose Liverpool for the same reasons I went to Roma when I first left Brazil—I thought this would be the best move for my career. Chelsea were changing their manager and not playing in the Champions League.
“I’ve also always admired Liverpool’s history. This is a club with five European Cups in their trophy cabinet. I really wanted to be part of that history.”
As it turned out, Alisson didn’t hold the title of world’s most expensive goalkeeper for very long, with Chelsea scrambling around the very next month to splash £71million on Kepa…

    RB – Dani Alves
Barcelona and Chelsea formed an intense rivalry after a number of heated Champions League battles between the pair throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
And after joining the Catalan giants in the summer of 2008, Alves became a key cog in these matches, rampaging down the right flank in what has become trademark fashion down the years.
The Brazilian won an astonishing 23 trophies during his first time at the Nou Camp, but again things could have been very different, had he gone to Stamford Bridge instead.
More than a decade later, the now 38-year-old revealed that he had given a move to West London from Sevilla in 2007 the green light.
He told Sky Sports: “I didn’t go to Chelsea because of the club, not because of me.
“I thought it was done, that I was going there to work with [Mourinho]. I don’t know if he got different information, that I didn’t want to go or whatever, because since then our relationship hasn’t been so good, but it wasn’t my fault.
“I was convinced that I was going to work with him and form part of his team.”
    CB – John Stones
“Money can’t buy you Stones,” Everton supporters gleefully sang.
It was August 2015, and having just won his third Premier League title, Mourinho was desperate to land the highly-rated 21-year-old defender from the Toffees, to bolster his ageing defence.
Everton held firm over the confident centre-back, however, much to the increasingly moody Portuguese’s ire.
With John Terry’s once imperious powers on the wane, and having seemingly lost the dressing room, Mourinho was sacked four months later – while it turned out money could in fact buy Stones the year after, just not Chelsea’s.
The Yorkshireman joined Manchester City for £47.5m in 2016, and has won three Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola.
On his reasons for ultimately joining City, he told Soccer AM: “Guardiola was 100 per cent a major factor, if not the main reason for me coming.
“There’s a lot of factors when you’re thinking about moving clubs but in my eyes he’s the best manager in the world to work with.
“To be given that opportunity to work with him, I couldn’t say no.”

    CB – Virgil van Dijk
Of all the names on this teamsheet, Van Dijk’s may sting Chelsea fans the most.
The Dutch defender was highly sought after during his time at Southampton, but it was Liverpool, rather than Chelsea that opted to splash what had seemed an extraordinary £75m to prise him away from St Mary’s.
But he has gone on to be worth every penny.
Helping Liverpool to Champions League glory, and a key cog in their title win in 19-20, van Dijk’s incredible performances even saw him come second in the 2019 Ballon d’Or.
Then Chelsea boss Antonio Conte had been desperate to land him, but revealed his side were priced out of the move.
The surly Italian huffed back in 2018: “This is football. This is life. For sure he was our target, but as you know this is football.
“We can have a lot of targets, but you must be able to reach those targets. The transfer market is not simple for any club.”
    LB – Roberto Carlos
Legendary left-back Roberto Carlos was a key figure in Real Madrid’s ‘Galacticos’ side of the early noughties, wowing fans with his astonishing left foot.
His 11 years at the Bernabeu came to an end in 2007, when he surprisingly moved to Turkey – signing for Istanbul giants Fenerbahce.
But the Brazilian revealed a decade on that he had come close to joining Chelsea instead.
The Blues had arguably the best left-back of his generation in Ashley Cole, but few would have said no to a 34-year-old Carlos as back-up – even just to take free-kicks.
The man himself told Sky Sports: “I spoke to Roman Abramovich about it. We had a meeting in Paris but it didn’t happen due to a few small factors.”

    CM – Steven Gerrard
In July 2005, just weeks after lifting the Champions League trophy with the club he had played for since the age of eight, Steven Gerrard shocked the world by handing in a transfer request.
He wanted to join up with Mourinho at Chelsea.
The then Liverpool captain and now Aston Villa manager had grown tired of his contract stand-off with Anfield chiefs, and when the Blues made a £32m bid, Gerrard’s head was well and truly turned.
Mourinho was a huge fan of the player, and perhaps was the man to solve the infamous Gerrard-Frank Lampard England dilemma – particularly with Claude Makelele available to field them with in a midfield trio.
But the move failed to materialise and within a matter of days the darling of the Kop had signed a bumper new £100k-a-week contract.
All was forgiven, all was forgotten, and Gerrard played another ten seasons at Anfield.
But having never won a Premier League title, you could forgive the 41-year-old for occasionally wistfully looking back and wondering what might have been…

    CM – Paul Pogba
Paul Pogba has divided football fans since his then world-record £89m return to Manchester United in 2016.
But what few can dispute is the Frenchman’s outrageous talent when fit and on his game.
His relationship with Mourinho famously broke down at Old Trafford, but that does not mean that the Special One was never a fan of his.
In fact, in the same summer that Chelsea had courted Stones, having won the league in 2015, Mourinho wanted Pogba to spearhead the Blues’ title defence the following year.
But his agent Mino Raiola and Juventus blocked the transfer after agreeing the Frenchman would stay put in order to try and win the Champions League instead.
The late Raiola said: “Paul could have left [Juventus] last year because Mourinho – then at Chelsea – really wanted him.
“But Juventus and I had an agreement: win the league title and the Champions League, then he can go.”

    RW – Robinho
The disgraced former star didn’t live up to expectations on the pitch.
A once outrageously talented trickster known for dazzling defenders with his trademark stepovers in the white of Madrid, however, the Brazilian was courted by his compatriot Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2008.
It had seemed a foregone conclusion that he would end up at Stamford Bridge… but then he didn’t.
He instead shocked the world, by signing for Manchester City in Deadline Day’s dying embers.
Back in 2018, he lifted the lid on the surprise transfer, telling FourFourTwo: “I wanted to go to Chelsea.
“Scolari told me that I could make the difference for him in the team.
“However, Real Madrid ended up badly with them, they didn’t like the way that Chelsea sold shirts with my name on them before the deal was done.
“I am sure it was this that led to the negotiations to fail and it was a case of pride for Real Madrid.
“They were also reluctant to let me move to a club that was playing in the Champions League that season. Chelsea were, but City weren’t.”
    CAM – Ronaldinho
The Brazilian hit headlines last year for surprising reasons, but here we’re going to focus on his football.
For in the mid-2000s, Ronaldinho felt untouchable.
He was the planet’s most exciting player, dazzling defenders with his outrageous tricks, and winning fans around the globe with the immense swagger and charm that he played with
It is well-known that he nearly signed for Manchester United in 2003, before instead leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Barcelona.
But it is lesser known that Chelsea were also in for him.
The man himself later revealed: “Chelsea tried to take me there once, and some other teams were interested in signing me, too.
“The league there is so fast and so intense all of the time – it’s great to watch and not boring at all.
“I don’t tend to watch all 90 minutes of Premier League games, but I will see more of the highlights and the goals in the Premier League than I see of other leagues around the world.”

    LW – Neymar
Another major star that just got away from the Blues.
The year was 2010 and an 18-year-old sensation by the name of Neymar was leaving jaws on the floor with his array of tricks and flicks while wearing the colours of Santos in his native Brazil.
West Ham had surprisingly been the first Premier League side to dip their toe into the market for the wonderkid (now that would have been something..!), but had been rejected out of hand.
Champions Chelsea were to be next, even tabling a £27m bid for the player.
Like the Hammers, they were turned down, but kept trying, even reportedly setting up secret meetings with the player’s father in order to convince him that his son’s future lay in West London.
The deal failed to materialise, however, with Santos amazingly being able to keep him for another three years before finally selling him to Barcelona.
After much success in Spain, PSG made him the world’s most expensive player in 2017 when they splashed out £200m for his services.

    ST – Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney, possibly the most gifted English footballer of his generation, became Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer after netting a free-kick against Stoke in January 2017.
But four years prior to that, it looked as if the explosive striker wanted to leave Old Trafford for good.
The fiery character had his run-ins with Sir Alex Ferguson, but it was when his former Everton boss David Moyes arrived in the summer of 2013, that Chelsea went all out to sign him.
Rooney later denied handing in a transfer request in Sir Alex’s final season, but admitted considering his options.
He told the BBC: “I went in to see him [Ferguson] and just said if you’re not going to play me it might be better if I moved on – then all of a sudden it’s all over the press I put in a transfer request, which I never did.”
That summer, Mourinho, having just returned to Stamford Bridge, boldly claimed that Rooney was his ‘only transfer target’.
Chelsea had a flurry of bids rejected, and Rooney ultimately stayed at Old Trafford. More

Floyd Mayweather names his five greatest boxers – snubbing Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson – but putting himself as No1

FLOYD MAYWEATHER declared himself as the greatest boxer of all time when asked for his top five – and snubbed both Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. The 45-year-old – who was announced as Boxrec’s No1 in June 2020 – believes he is levels ahead of everyone else after ending his career having won all 50 of his fights as a professional.
Floyd Mayweather has named himself the greatest boxer of all time
Mayweather appeared on rapper Fat Joe’s Instagram live video when he was asked with who his top five are.
Breaking it down, he stated: “We’re going to have to go, OK we’ll go Money Mayweather, we got to go Pernell Whitaker, imma go, Roberto Duran, man you put me in a tight predicament.
“As far as with the heavyweights, if we’re going to go heavyweights, I’m going to be honest, I’ve got to go Larry Holmes.”
Fat Joe then interjected where he stated that he doesn’t believe Holmes is better than Ali or Tyson, to which Mayweather said: “Do you want me to give you the breakdown?
“Larry Holmes beat everybody in his era, when Larry Holmes got beat by Mike Tyson, he got beat by a young hungry champion and he came out of a year’s retirement and got beat by Tyson.
    GO WITH THE FLOW
“I’ve got to say Larry Holmes, he had the basic fundamentals, he had the jab and even right now he’s still living a great life because he made smart investments.
“So he was good from the beginning of his career to the end of his career.”
Detailing his final pick, Mayweather added: “Aaron Pryor, the only reason why Aaron Pryor lost a fight was because of drugs, he lost only one fight because of drugs.”
Here SunSport runs you down Mayweather’s top five greatest boxers of all time:
How Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul compare ahead of their fight
    1. FLOYD MAYWEATHER
It comes as no surprise Mayweather has put himself in first place as he refers to himself as The Best Ever.
The American – who picked up a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics – won 15 world titles across five weight divisions.
He holds notable victories against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.
And he easily defeated UFC mega-star Conor McGregor when he crossed-over to the ring back in August 2017.
    2. PERNELL WHITAKER
The former boxer picked up world titles in four weight classes, as he finished his career in 2001 having won 40 out of 46 contests.
Whitaker – who died at the age of 55 in July 2019 – still holds the record as being the longest unified lightweight champion in boxing history after defending his title six times.

    3. ROBERTO DURAN
The 70-year-old competed in a whopping 119 fights during his career that spanned 33 years from 1968-2001.
During that time he won 103 times, winning world titles in four divisions as he became just the second fighter after Jack Johnson to step inside the ring in five decades.
    4. LARRY HOLMES
Even though his entry puzzled Fat Joe, the 72-year-old is a three-time former heavyweight world champion.
He was the only man to ever stop Muhammad Ali, while he also boasted victories against the likes of Trevor Berbick, Leon Spinks as well as Earnie Shavers.

Inside Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather’s 22-year feud as war of words continues to escalate between the pair

THERE is no love lost between Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather. The two boxing legends have struggled to see eye-to-eye – building up a feud that’s lasted over 20 years.
Mike Tyson, centre, and Floyd Mayweather, right, have shared a feud for over 20 yearsCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Tyson, 55, slammed 45-year-old’s Mayweather’s view that there are too many belts in the sport and that “everybody’s a champion”.
‘Iron Mike’ believes that because there’s more belts on offer, the fighters have a better opportunity at making larger sums of cash.
“Boxing never has too many belts because every time it’s a championship fight, it’s more money for the fighter,” Tyson is reported to have said by Essentially Sports.

    MUTUAL RESPECT UNTIL 2001
Up until 2001, the two were believed to be friends – with a relationship formed on their mutual respect for one another.

Mayweather’s career was just starting to take off as Tyson’s was beginning to wind down, and there was never any boxing rivalry being in two different weight divisions.
However, their bromance officially ended when a report claimed ‘Money’ played a role in a police raid at Tyson’s Las Vegas home, after he was accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman.
It was sensationally alleged that Mayweather was upset with Tyson seeing the girl in question, and he told her to go to the police and make the unsubstantiated claims.
The cops then descended upon Tyson’s pad, which ended the friendship there and then.
Tyson has even spoken about the incident to Boxing Junkie in the past saying, “Some serious people said it.”
However, he has never been able to find evidence that suggests Mayweather was behind it.
“I’m good with it now… You can forgive, but you have to remember,” he added.
    ‘I’M THE GREATEST’
Back in 2015, Mayweather made the typically outlandish claim that he was the greatest boxer in history.

With an undefeated record, it’s hard to argue the case.
But Tyson wasn’t having it – and didn’t mince his words when he heard Mayweather’s boast about himself.
    “He’s very delusional,” Tyson explained.
“Listen, if he was anywhere near that realm of great as Muhammad Ali, he’d be able to take his kids to school by himself.
“Ok, he can’t take his kids to school by himself, and he’s talking about he’s great?
“Greatness is not guarding yourself from the people. It’s being accepted by the people.
“He can’t take his kids alone to school by himself. He’s a little scared man. He’s a very small, scared man.”
    TYSON BACKS HIMSELF
Despite Mayweather’s bold statement, Tyson believes he could batter Floyd.
GQ once asked the former heavyweight champion who would win in a street fight between the pair.

Mike was unequivocal with his response. “[I would] kick Floyd’s a***… there wouldn’t even be no match.”
And in an interview with ShoBox, the same question was asked – this time the setting being a ring. But Tyson admitted he’d have to fight dirty.
“We can never fight, of course, because of the weight difference, but I wouldn’t fight him the way they fought him,” he said.
“I would be mean, I would be dirty. Because you’d have to do everything to fight him because he’s just so good.
“It’s impossible to fight him clean. It’s almost impossible to fight him clean. You can’t fight him clean. You can’t fight this guy clean.”
    A HUG AND A JOKE?
In 2014, Tyson and Mayweather’s paths crossed at a WBC convention at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Onlookers expected fireworks as Mike made his way down the line, shaking hands with all until he was faced with Mayweather.

Mayweather didn’t flinch from Tyson’s swing, and bubbling underneath the surface was perhaps some resentment towards one another.

Sergio Aguero spent whole game against QPR ‘scratching his balls’ until iconic goal.. which Man City star says was fluke

SERGIO AGUERO has admitted he did nothing but “scratch his balls” before he scored THAT goal to kickstart a decade of success for Manchester City. The now-retired Argentine striker, 33, scored right at the death against QPR back in 2012 to win the game 3-2 and prevent arch-rivals Manchester United winning the Premier League title in a thrilling finish.

Who can forget Sky Sports’ commentator Martin Tyler screaming: “Agueeeerroooooo”?
It was one of the greatest finishes to a league season ever in England – or across the globe, for that matter.
But Aguero – who has been immortalised with his own statue outside the Etihad – has admitted he did little else that day.
In 2020, the legendary striker claimed: “I didn’t do anything that game. I came on and scratched my balls for the whole game!
“I only received a kick in the back and did nothing else… until the goal.
“I swear, guys, that I didn’t want to kick the ball like I did… I didn’t want to put it there.
“If I had it kicked like I really wanted, it would have hit the defenders in the way and it wouldn’t have been a goal. But luckily I scored.”

At the time of his interview, Aguero had uploaded videos playing FIFA 20 against the likes of Miguel Layun and Sergio Reguilon, as well as chats with Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry.
In one of his clips, the City forward recorded himself watching and commenting the highlights of that epic City match against QPR.
Watching that clip, Aguero was very critical with Rangers’ ex-City midfielder Joey Barton, who was sent off after elbowing Carlos Tevez and kicking Aguero from behind.
Aguero said: “He kicked Carlitos and then he kicked me! It’s a guy that has been sent off something like 20,000 times in the Premier League.
“He said he was sent off unjustly, but he elbowed Carlos! Luckily I was there to defend him. From Argentine to Argentine, friend to friend. But you just look when he kicked me.
“Look at his face (Barton’s), he’s a madman! He kicked me hard. He looks like a murderer. Everyone should take a picture of his face. But Kompany was there to help me and so did Samir (Nasri).
“Take a look at the video, both Carlitos and me where down in the ground!”
“I can see him (Barton) was shouting at me, but I didn’t understand a word he said. At that time my English was bad, I could only say ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’, ‘how are you’, ‘I’m fine’… he said lots of things to me, but I didn’t understand.”
Aguero then joked: “But, hey, look at Clichy too! Why didn’t he help me. Clichy, do something, ask me how I am doing. Look at Barton, crazy as shit. I knew I was defended, I had tough guys near me: Kompany, Dzeko, De Jong, Balotelli.” More

Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp QPR winner began Man City’s era at top on this day TEN years ago, Martin Tyler looks back

“AGUEROOOOOO!”It’s one of the most-iconic pieces of commentary in football history and kickstarted a decade of dominance for Manchester City.

That day, against QPR, City nicked the title from neighbours Manchester United.
Martin Tyler was on commentary that day and roared that famous line – with Aguero now immortalised with his own statue outside the Etihad.
Now the legendary Sky Sports commentator reveals all about that famous day, now TEN YEARS on…
THERE is rarely a week goes by when I am not asked by football fans but also complete strangers to scream: “AGUEROOOOOO!”

It seems crazy that this incredibly dramatic game is eight years old today.
I feel proud and privileged that when people talk of the most iconic pieces of football commentary my moment at the Etihad in 2012 is up there with Kenneth Wolstenholme’s World Cup 1966 “Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over…” and Brian Moore’s 1989 Arsenal victory at Liverpool “It’s up for grabs now…”
When I look back there are so many different elements that allowed the dramatic events.
I am indebted to the Sky Sports production team for selecting me to be commentator at the Etihad.

I don’t get to choose where I go. I was picked to go to Man City, while Rob Hawthorn went to the Sunderland-Manchester United match.
It’s easy to forget that Man City are not the Man City of now. They hadn’t won a top flight title for nearly half a century. This was almost untapped territory for them. They weren’t used to anything like this sort of pressure and scrutiny.
And with QPR leading 2-1, the Aguero goal would have meant nothing had it not been for Edin Dzeko’s leveller also in injury time.
The fact the game was running later than Manchester United’s game at The Stadium of Light, so their match was over and they were waiting on tenterhooks for the final whistle at the Etihad.
It’s strange when I reflect on the winning goal, I knew Sergio was going to score as soon as he collected the ball from Mario Balotelli and was about to shoot. We all know how clinical he is.
What happened next is what I have always done in 38 years of football commentary… tell everyone a goal has been scored!
But for the 20th season of the Premier League with virtually its last kick to be the title-clinching goal being scored by a team winning their first top flight title in 44 years was something quite extraordinary.
As a commentator you are just in the moment and what you say is instinct. But for my words to be part of Manchester City history is something very humbling.
But I cannot stress enough it’s Sergio’s goal, nothing to do with me. I am just happy I was just one among the 48,000 fans who attended that day to say: I was there.
Mark Hughes was the QPR manager that day. I met him a week later at the LMA awards. He said to me it was the loudest noise he had ever heard in a stadium.
This is a guy who had played for Manchester United, Barcelona and been manager at Manchester City – so he had been part of some very loud stadiums in his career!
Sky Sports’ Martin Tyler is proud his description of Aguero’s goal has gone down as a classic piece of commentaryCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Everyone also forgets the brilliant and emotional pictures that Sky Sports produced that day – all thanks to director Tony Mills.
The split screen showing the live game and Alex Ferguson and United players waiting at Sunderland and then back to full screen for the goal. It was breathtaking decision-making.
Then the way in which he captured City keeper Joe Hart’s reaction at the other end of the pitch was sensational and brave to cut away from where Aguero was celebrating. It captured the emotions brilliantly.
I still feel lucky 46 years on from my first ever TV commentary experiencing and talking through matches and moments. More

Where Man City’s 2011-12 Premier League title winners are now including final-day hero Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli

SERGIO AGUERO’S last-minute goal to win Manchester City the 2012 title is the most iconic moment in Premier League history and happened ten years ago today. The Etihad club have marked the occasion by placing a statue of Aguero’s wild celebration against QPR outside the stadium.

The goal and therefore the title win opened the floodgates for City as they lifted their first Premier League crown.
They are now up to five and are four points away from a sixth crown, including four in the last five seasons.
But what has happened to the Argentine legend and his team-mates including maverick stars Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli in the decade that has passed since that memorable moment in 2012?
City looked destined to miss out on the title as they trailed 2-1 at home to relegation-threatened QPR after 90 minutes on May 13, 2012.

Pablo Zabaleta gave Roberto Mancini’s men the lead six minutes before half-time but the Londoners battled back through Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie who scored either side of Joey Barton’s red card for the visitors.
But somehow, after Edin Dzeko’s header gave City the faintest glimmer of hope in the 92nd minute, Aguero got on the end of Balotelli’s pass inside the penalty box.
As bitter rivals Manchester United waited with baited breath at Sunderland to see if their win was enough, the pint-sized superstar lashed the ball past Paddy Kenny in the 94th minute triggering scenes of total bedlam in the stadium.
Martin Tyler screamed “AGUEEEEERRRRROOOOOOO” to millions watching at home as the Argentine wheeled away in ecstasy twirling his shirt around his head.

But there were 13 other City stars who played that day and many more throughout the season – so here SunSport reveals what has happened to them since.
    Starting XI
    JOE HART
The former England goalkeeper spent six more years between the sticks at the Etihad before being bombed out by Pep Guardiola when the Spaniard took over in 2016.
He spent two uninspiring loan spells at Torino and West Ham before moving to Burnley in 2018.
But the 35-year-old – who earned his 75th and last England cap in 2017 – also struggled for game time at Turf Moor and Tottenham.
He now finds himself north of the border after signing for Celtic last summer and an impressive season has seen him win the Scottish Premiership and League Cup.

    PABLO ZABALETA
Opened the scoring in the historic game against QPR and will forever be adored in Manchester for several world-class campaigns during his nine years with the club.
He played for West Ham for three years after his 2017 departure and retired officially on October 16, 2020.
Zabaleta, now 37, is working on his coaching badges in a bid to go into management.

    VINCENT KOMPANY
Few men will be revered as much as Kompany for generations to come at City.
Their iconic captain led the club with aplomb on and off the pitch until he left for Anderlecht in 2019.
Initially signed on a player-coach basis, the 36-year-old is now manager of the Belgian side.

Having arrived from Everton in 2009, the centre-back appeared 31 times during the historic 11-12 season.
Eventually left for West Brom in 2014 before spending time with Aston Villa, AEK Athens and Sunderland before hanging up the boots in 2017.
Was involved in a bizarre story where Spanish club Racing Murcia claimed they had signed him to play in a cup game in November 2020.
But he never turned out for the fourth-tier side and has done punditry work on Sky Sports and BT Sport while also once working as the loans manager at the Etihad.
Lescott, now 39, is a coach for the England Under-21s.
    GAEL CLICHY
A stalwart in the title-winning campaign of 2011-12 – his first with City after eight years at Arsenal.
The Frenchman, 36, went on to win more silverware with City before he left in 2017 for Istanbul Basaksehir.
Left-back Clichy is currently with Swiss Super League side Servette whom he joined in December 2020 on an 18-month deal.

    SAMIR NASRI
Another man who played the best football of his career at City after joining from Arsenal.
The French midfielder is often under-rated and instead remembered for the ‘drip-doctor’ scandal and his subsequent 12-month Uefa ban.
But the midfielder’s performances on the pitch are fondly recalled by City fans.
Not so by fans of West Ham who Nasri joined in 2019 – impressing no one in a spell that fell between time at Sevilla, Antalyaspor and Anderlecht.
Nasri, 34, retired after being axed by former team-mate Kompany’s side for flying to Dubai without contacting his club.
    YAYA TOURE
One of the finest players in Premier League history.
The Ivorian genius was the perfect combination of power, pace and ability and was an integral part of City’s golden period of success.
Former Barcelona man played in China for Qingdao Huanghai after a spell at Olympiacos but retired in January 2020.
Toure, 39, has since served as assistant manager at Ukrainian Premier League side Olimpik Donetsk and Russian top-flight side Akhmat Grozny – both in 2021, lasting just months in each role.

    GARETH BARRY
Mr Reliable holds the record for the most Premier League appearances of any player with 653.
The holding midfielder played 31 times in 2011-12.
Former 53-cap England international Barry, now 41, left City in 2013 for Everton – initially on loan before a permanent move in 2014.
He stayed at Goodison Park before leaving for West Brom in 2017 where he eventually retired at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.
    DAVID SILVA
The 36-year-old mercurial Spaniard only left City in 2020 after ten glorious years.
He won four Premier Leagues, two FA Cups and five League Cups.
And his almost telepathic link with Aguero saw the two rip teams apart season after season. Now plays for Spanish side Real Sociedad where he won the postponed Copa del Rey.

    CARLOS TEVEZ
Tevez, 37, did something few players have ever done and played for both City and United – although Paul Pogba could join that controversial list.
He spent four years at Old Trafford after bursting on to the scene at West Ham in the 2006-07 season.
But he made the controversial switch to United’s bitter rivals in 2009.
The Argentine scored 73 times in 148 City appearances before transferring to Juventus in 2013.
He stayed with the Serie A giants for two years before returning to his beloved Boca Juniors.
Tevez did make a temporary switch to Shanghai Shenhua in 2017 – which he admitted was just for the money – but he went straight back to La Bombonera then announced his departure on mental grounds last June.

    SERGIO AGUERO
The Argentine was the last remaining member of the QPR match-day squad at City.
Aguero, 33, was forced to change his game when Guardiola arrived but he quickly implemented the pressing style into his game and will go down as one of the best players – if not THE best – to ever grace the Premier League.
The Argentina international played 390 games for City, managed a staggering 260 goals and joined Barcelona for free when his contract expired.
Aguero had to retire earlier in the season following a heart condition that left him struggling to breathe on the pitch.

    COSTEL PANTILIMON
The Romanian did not feature at all in the Premier League during the 2012 title-winning campaign.
Has played for Sunderland, Watford and Nottingham Forest in England since and was most-recently at Turkish club Denizlispor.
Now 35, Pantillimon is currently a free agent.
    MICAH RICHARDS
    City fan-favourite was a semi-regular in 2011-12 making 23 league starts.
Left on loan in 2014 to Fiorentina before a permanent departure to Aston Villa in 2015 after ten years with City.
Still only 33, Richards has become an elite pundit with his easy-going demeanour, infectious laugh and high-level analysis.
    ALEKSANDAR KOLAROV
The Serbian left-back started just nine games in 2011-12 but spent five more years in Manchester – reaching 247 total games in blue.
Spent three years at Roma from 2017 and has played 15 games for Inter Milan since joining at the start of last season.

    JAMES MILNER
Jokingly nicknamed Mr Boring, Milner has been utilised as an elite versatility man for the last 11 years since he joined City in 2010.
Left for Liverpool in 2015 where he remains, now aged 36.
Has won three Premier Leagues, one Champions League, one FA Cup and two League Cups.
He could still add the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League before the end of the season in a historic quadruple.
    NIGEL DE JONG
Dutch midfielder is probably most famous for his karate kick on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 World Cup final.
The 2011-12 season proved to be his last with City after his 2009 arrival.
Has played for AC Milan, La Galaxy, Galatasaray, Mainz and Al Ahli since.
Most recently played for Qatari club Al-Shahaniya and provides punditry for beIN Sports.
    MARIO BALOTELLI
The 31-year-old ‘why always me’ renegade divides opinion across the football world.
An undoubted talent but lacked the work rate and attitude to stay consistent at the top level.
Left City in 2013 and has played for AC Milan, Liverpool, Nice, Marseille, Brescia and Monza – who he joined on December 7, 2020.
Monza’s owner revealed the striker is drinking in the Last Chance Saloon after joining with the ‘best intentions’.
And his seven-month contract was not extended as Balotelli signed for Turkish outfit Adana Demirspor last summer, scoring 13 goals in 31 games.

    EDIN DZEKO
Came off the bench to score the equaliser against QPR.
The Bosnian, now 36, was predominantly used as a back-up striker during his five years with City from 2011-16.
He did have spells as No1 but he found game time much easier to come by at Roma from 2015 to 2021.
The 120-cap hero scored 119 goals in 260 Roma matches but joined Inter Milan in 2021 and has continued his fine goal-scoring exploits. More

Biggest buyout fees in football after Barcelona insert €1BILLION clause into Ferran Torres’ five-year contract

FERRAN TORRES joined Barcelona in January and the club included a staggering €1BILLION release clause in his contract. The Spanish giants inserted the huge £847million buyout fee after agreeing to buy the Spain international from Manchester City for a fraction of that sum – a comparatively small £55million.

The move comes months after they did the same with teenage star Pedri, when he signed a new deal.
Not only did Pedri put pen to paper on a five-year deal, he will now only be available for purchase for a staggering £847million.
Barcelona learned the hard way that it’s always best to exaggerate the release fee.
After all, Paris Saint-Germain matched Neymar’s £198m release clause and landed the Brazilian in 2017.

So perhaps it’s no surprise the cash-strapped LaLiga giants have since learned their lesson.
Barca and fierce rivals Real Madrid dominate the list of the highest release clauses in world football.

And the first thing the Spanish side did was insert a buyout clause of one billion euros.
City believe they have struck a great deal for the 22-year-old who cost them just £20.8 million when he arrived from Valencia in summer 2020.

    PEDRI – £847m
Barcelona confirmed 19-year-old Pedri agreed a new deal in October, and inserted the crazy price tag
In a statement the club confirmed: “Barcelona and the player, Pedro González ‘Pedri’, have agreed a contract extension up to 30 June 2026.
“The release clause is set at one billion euro.”

    KARIM BENZEMA – £847m
The Frenchman has been a part of the furniture at Real Madrid following his move from Lyon in 2009.
Benzema, 34, continues to defy his age by performing to an absolutely elite level.
The veteran boasted the highest release clause in world football with a staggering £846.7m and has now been matched by Pedri.
He still has just under two years left on his deal at the Bernabeu and it is safe to say he won’t be leaving before then.

    ANTOINE GRIEZMANN – £678m
In 2019, Barcelona splashed a staggering £107.6m to bring Griezmann to the Nou Camp from Atletico Madrid.
Barca handed the France star a £725,000-a-week contract, adding a £677.2m release clause in the deal.
However, Griezmann thoroughly underwhelmed at the club.
And while he is still technically on the club’s books, he is currently on loan back at Atleti, with his contract not expiring until the end of the 2023-24 season.

    FEDERICO VALVERDE – £635m
The Uruguayan star, 23, signed from Penarol in 2016 and quickly burst onto the scene with Real Madrid Castilla – the club’s ‘B’ team.
Since making his league debut in 2018, following a loan stint at Deportivo La Coruna, Valverde has become a key man in the Los Blancos’ midfield.
In 2019, Valverde was handed a bumper new five-year deal, including the staggering £634.9m release fee – one clubs will likely never match.

    LUKA MODRIC – £635m
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner – and team-mate of Valverde – also has a £634.9m release clause in his contract at Real Madrid.
At the age of 36, the Croatian is now enjoying the twilight of his career at the Bernabeu.
His contract at the Bernabeu expires next summer… and so will his release clause.

    BRAHIM DIAZ – £635m
The talented 22-year-old may not have had much of a look in at Real Madrid but he’ll still cost £634.9m – the same as Modric and Valverde.
Diaz left Man City for Real in 2019 with the Spanish club keen to ensure he doesn’t move on anytime soon.
He is currently enjoying the second of THREE years on loan at AC Milan.

    ISCO – £593m
Another Real Madrid star, Isco sits seventh on the list – despite being hotly linked with an exit for the past three seasons.
His £592.5m release clause was added when he penned a lucrative five-year contract in 2017, shortly before he slipped out of the starting XI.
Once touted as a future world star, his career at the Bernabeu has gone stale in recent seasons and could move to the Premier League for a fee closer to £30m.

    VINICIUS JR – £593m
The 21-year-old Brazilian is seen as one of Real Madrid’s greatest prospects.
So it is no surprise he has a £592.5m release clause.
Vinicius Jr signed from Flamengo in 2017 and emerged as a key player under Zinedine Zidane – and more-recently Carlo Ancelotti.

    MARCO ASENSIO – £593m
Another Real Madrid player to crack the top ten, Asensio sits level seventh.
The 26-year-old penned a six-year contract in 2017 with Los Blancos adding a £592.5m release clause to ward off Europe’s biggest clubs.
Much like team-mate Isco, Asensio looks almost certain to leave the Bernabeu in 2022 after spending much of the season on the bench.

    NICO GONZALEZ – £430m
Barcelona handed youngster Nico Gonzalez a new contract with a staggering release clause worth £430m in May.
Gonzalez, 20, was yet to make a first-team appearance for the Nou Camp when the clause was inserted.
The Spanish whiz has since played 27 times in LaLiga, while also featuring in the Champions League mauling at the hands of Benfica.

    GARETH BALE – £423m
The Welshman’s days at Real Madrid may be numbered but he still has a £423m release clause in his contract.
It runs until the end of this season but Los Blancos are keen on letting him leave permanently.
Bale spent last season on loan with Tottenham and played three times under Ancelotti in August but has been frozen out since.

    GERARD PIQUE – £423m
Matching Bale’s £423m release clause is Barcelona legend Gerard Pique.
The Spaniard penned an extension to his deal in October until the summer of 2024.
In the summer, Pique agreed to a 50 per cent pay cut owing to the club’s financial meltdown.
But there has been no suggestion his £423m release clause has been removed.
He has played over 500 times for Barca following his return from Manchester United in 2008.
