Ex-Middlesbrough footy star Richard Kell became a Jet2 pilot after two broken legs wrecked his footballing dream

WHO needs a football career? When Richard Kell, now 43, decided to hang up his boots at 27 after suffering two broken legs he already had a back-up plan.

Kell is equally as critical of his performance as a pilot as he was a player
The former Middlesbrough trainee began learned how to fly a plane during an injury lay-off at Scunthorpe United from 2001-2004.
And back in 2020 he revealed all about what led to him becoming an airline captain for commercial airline Jet2.
“I had just recovered from my first broken leg and felt I was struggling to get back to full fitness at Scunthorpe,” Kell revealed in 2016.
“I was on a month to month contract and whilst waiting in the airport for a pre-season tour to Ireland I got talking to a pilot who was sat next to me.
“On my return I went to my nearest airport (Humberside) to make my initial enquiries.
“I had completed about 10-15 hours training, however my fitness returned, I signed a new contract and my pilots training was put on the ‘back burner’ for a time.
“Fortunately I was able to keep returning to my training at different times in my playing career.”
Kell believes that key skills he had as a footballer put him in good stead when it came to transitioning towards flying a plane.

He said: “I was analytical as a footballer and always wanted to learn more.
“Also, football gave me interpersonal skills. Being confined within the ‘tin box’ of a cockpit at 35,000 feet, means that I must be appreciative of my co pilots and other crew, who I have to interact with.
“Finally, I was a fairly technical player so my overall touch and hand/ eye coordination is a great attribute to have as a pilot, helping me instinctively know when to apply power and rudder.”
Kell jokes that he is as critical of his performance as a pilot as he was a footballer – and he analyses his performance in the cockpit just like he did on the pitch.
“Rather like being a footballer I always want to do the job to the best of my ability,” he said.
“I still sometimes think about my performance on the way home and how I can do my job better the next time.”
Making it as a footballer is a tough ask, every kid dreams of becoming one.
However, going on to become a pilot is equally as hard in what is a competitive industry.
“You can be different, but nothing worthwhile is easy,” Kell revealed.
“My chosen career was every bit as hard to get into as football and can be equally as competitive. However, if I had failed to gain my commercial pilot license I could still have gone and done something more mainstream and familiar.
“I didn’t want any niggling doubts or ‘what ifs’ later in life.”
    PFA HELP
When his premature retirement came knocking on the door, Kell was awarded a lump sum from the PFA.
They also gave him an educational grant that helped fund his aviation courses.
Kell said: “When I retired I put all my money into finishing my private licence off and going from one thing to the next; commercial licence, ground school etc.
“After I retired I received some insurance money and I thought I would never lay my hands on that sort of cash again so, rather than put an extension on my house or something like that, I thought ‘this is my career so let’s do something with it’.
“Aviation will last you up until you’re 60-65 years old so it’s a long-term investment.
“Footballers can get funnelled down the path of coaching or management but there is a lot more out there and it’s worked out really well for me.”
Kell has one piece of advice to pass on to players, especially in the lower leagues.
“My main advice would be that players only tend to think about an alternative career during difficult periods in their careers. Try and capitalize and think of your transition when things are going well.”

Mike Tyson believes he would have beaten heavyweight stars Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Fury in prime

WITH 44 KOs across 50 wins in his career, it’s fair to say Mike Tyson will forever be known as one of boxing’s greatest heavyweights ever.Fans forever argue as to who would win in their prime: Iron Mike or Muhammad Ali.

But Tyson, 55 – who made his comeback against Roy Jones Jr in 2020 – has also had his say on how he’d fare against some of the current best in the heavyweight division.
From British stars Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, to the Bronze Bomber, Deontay Wilder, ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ has revealed how each fight would go.
Check out what he makes of the hypothetical super-fights…
    MIKE TYSON vs TYSON FURY
Tyson reckons he’d have Fury’s number in the ring in his prime
Back to his dangerous best, 6ft 9in Fury beat Wilder in Las Vegas in 2021 to clinch the WBC and The Ring magazine belts.
And he kept them with a homecoming win over Dillian Whyte earlier this year.
Tyson has been a fan of Fury’s since before his rise to the very top – having watched the controversial draw in his first fight with Wilder.
Tyson claimed: “In the first fight I was hoping for Tyson Fury, I always pulled for him because he was named after me, that is the natural thing to do, right?
“He amazed a lot of people by getting up. He showed he is tough, he got up and won the final round.

“I thought it was over, then he got up and it was like Rocky, he then fought back.
“It was amazing, it made me a fan. It takes great fortitude and belief.”
But, as with AJ, Tyson revealed he’d beat his namesake if he was in his prime – while admitting it would have been tough.
The American said: “Listen, if you’re asking me if I was 20 years old, then yes, there’s no doubt.
“They’re really good fighters and I respect all these skills. It would have been very tough fighting them.”
    MIKE TYSON vs ANTHONY JOSHUA
Mike Tyson reckons he’d beat Joshua in his prime, but admitted he’s a ‘beautiful’ boxer
The former WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO champion, AJ was stunned by Oleksandr Usyk and lost his belts late in 2021.
Tyson revealed: “Hey, I really like him. You know what he is? He’s really a breath of fresh air.
“He’s really clean, he really looks clean, he’s a clean guy, he’s a clean fighter, he’s a good puncher.
“You just wish the best for him.
“I don’t know. My ego says, ‘nobody would beat you’ – but you look at him and… he just looks beautiful.
“He just looks like a fighter, you know? He looks like he was born to do what he has to do. He needs more experience of course, but that will come in life.”
Despite remaining fairly tight-lipped on that occasion – while speaking on his Hotboxin’ podcast – Tyson had previously claimed he would easily beat Joshua.
When asked if he’d beat AJ or Fury, Tyson replied: “Yes. Listen, if you’re asking me if I was 20 years old, then yes, there’s no doubt.
“They’re really good fighters and I respect all these skills. It would have been very tough fighting them.”MIKE TYSON vs DEONTAY WILDER
Tyson has no doubts in his mind he’d beat Wilder in his prime
Wilder might have lost out to Fury in their trilogy – but he’s back on the boxing trail after rumours he was about to hang up his gloves.
The Bronze Bomber has claimed his hard-hitting style would see him beat Tyson.
Wilder claimed: “Me vs. Tyson in ’86, I’d kick the hell outta that guy.
“Listen, I’ve got to keep it real. I know people always go back to the old school or look at the new school and there’s no school where I’m not No1 on earth.”
Replying to those comments before his defeat to Fury, Tyson was typically diplomatic, saying: “I don’t know [whether I’d beat him].
“I love the fact that he thinks that, because that’s the way I would think as well.
“He’s supposed to think that way, he is the heavyweight champion of the world and that’s something very special.”
But Tyson’s former trainer, Jeff Fenech, was in no doubt as to who would win…
Fenech said: “Boxing’s not the same now. I’d guarantee that if Mike Tyson trained for six weeks, he’d knock Wilder out in a minute.
“He would hit them. If these guys are getting knocked out by Tyson Fury – who’s a great fighter, but not a huge puncher – Tyson would kill these guys.
“They’re not on the same level today. Mike today, I reckon if he trained he could still beat these guys.
“Fury’s got these other skills, but Deontay Wilder’s got a punch and nothing else. If you punch him, it’s over.
    “And Mike don’t miss.”

The family can also snuggle down together for movie night in their home cinema room.
Meanwhile, the entire house is automated with blackout blinds and other top-of-the-line gadgets able to be set and run by computer for optimal comfort.

Hazard bought the home from famous Spanish singer, 17-time Grammy winner Alejandro Sanz.

Inside Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke’s £500m ranch, which is largest in USA and bigger than New York and LA combined

ARSENAL and Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke is worth an incredible £8.7BILLION and has a property portfolio to match. The American sports tycoon and his Walmart heiress wife purchased the United States’ largest ranch in 2016 and it’s so big you could fit the entire cities of New York and Los Angeles inside its borders.
The W.T Waggoner Ranch is the largest in the USA
The estate in Texas stretches over a staggering 535,000 acres
Kroenke paid £500m for the land in 2016
New York City AND Los Angeles would both fit inside its borders
At a whopping 535,000 acres, the W.T Waggoner Ranch in Texas was bought by Kroenke and his wife Ann Walton for a cool £500million.
The ranch includes thousands of cattle, hundreds of horses and oil wells, and 30,000 acres of farmland.
The 74-year-old billionaire’s company Kroenke Sports and Entertainment owns Arsenal and cut 55 jobs during the pandemic due to financial issues at Emirates Stadium.
He also owns Super bowl-bound NFL side LA Rams, NBA team Denver Nuggets, NHL franchise Colorado Avalanche and MLS side Colorado Rapids.
And he has invested billions of dollars into the construction of the 70,000 seat SoFI Stadium in Inglewood, California.
When he secured the ranch in 2016, Kroenke said: “This is an incredible opportunity and an even greater responsibility.

Kroenke said he was honoured to protect the American landmark when he bought the ranch in 2016. “We are honoured to assume ownership of the Waggoner – a true Texas and American landmark – and are deeply committed to continuing the proud legacy of W.T. “Tom” Waggoner, his family and his descendants.
“Our gratitude to them and to the many parties involved in this process is immense. We will continue to preserve and protect this uniquely American treasure.”
Kroenke is a fairly unpopular figure at Arsenal and in 2019 Gunners fans issued a joint statement calling on him to reinvigorate the club.
The statement said supporters had “never felt more marginalised”. The club then sacked Unai Emery and hired Mikel Arteta.
Kroenke is married to Ann, whose father Bud was an early partner in Walmart, which was founded by his brother Sam.
In 2012, Kroenke bought another historic property, the 124,000-acre Broken O Ranch in Montana.
He also owns ranches in Wyoming, Arizona and British Columbia.
New York City could fit inside the ranch’s border
And Los Angeles could still fit alongside NYC within the boundaries
The ranch comes with 30,000 acres of farmland
Agricultural machinery is seen across the gigantic swathes of land
Oil wells are also dotted across the property in Northern Texas
Picturesque stone outhouses also feature on the land
Kroenke’s estate stretches as far as the eye can see More

But, thanks to Instagram, we’re beginning to get a picture of the lavish lifestyle the stunning Wag is now accustomed to living.
Clad in designer clothing, the hispanic beauty is every bit a boxer’s Wag, able to swim in the riches of Canelo’s £100m fortune.
However, it’s their five-year-old daughter Maria who comes first.
    IT BEGAN SEVEN YEARS AGO
Fernanda reportedly met Canelo in 2016 at a charity gala, and instantly hit it off.
They soon started dating, although they kept their romance private and out of the spotlight.
That was, until, they were spotted celebrating his victory over Julio César Chávez Jr at Jewel Nightclub in Las Vegas.
The pair briefly split up when Fernanda was pregnant in 2017 but got back together again.
She’s been ringside ever since, with Canelo happy to share some of his success with her.

    ALONG CAME A DAUGHTER
In December 2017, Fernanda and Canelo welcomed their first child together, who they called Maria.
It was the famed brawler’s third child, he also has a daughter and a son from different relationships.
Maria is doted upon by Fernanda, and celebrated a no-expenses-spared Swan Lake-themed birthday that looked like it would cost as much as a wedding.
On the tables were party foods and lots of sweets.
But the best part was the hired swans roaming freely around the family’s grounds.
Fernanda reportedly dressed Maria in a Moschino sequinned blouse, while she was also clutching a Hermes pouch.

    DESIGNER WAG
If you’re wondering how toddler Maria became such a designer-baby, look no further than her designer mummy.
Fernanda wears the most exclusive brands, carries around accessories from the world’s biggest fashion houses, and lives a jet-set life the envy of many.
Her go-tos are Louis Vuitton and Gucci, including a pair of £600 trainers made by the latter.
She usually wraps herself in Louis Vuitton scarves, and also has a large collection of expensive sunglasses.
As a sideline, Gomez also runs her own nail salon in Guadalajara. It pays to be a boxer’s Wag.
    TYING THE KNOT
After several years of dating and having baby Maria together, Canelo and Gomez finally got married in 2021 before the champ beat Billy Joe Saunders.
Fernanda looked stunning as she wore an incredible sparkling dress and headpiece for the special day – matched with toddler Maria.
The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) congratulated the pair after pictures of their wedding surfaced online.
The post read: “The WBO Family wishes lots of love and happiness to the recently married couple, Unified WBO Super Middleweight Champion Saúl ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Fernanda Gómez.”
Last year, Alvarez spoke briefly of his marriage to Gomez.
“I feel way different, I am a happy man, more than before,” he told BT Sport.

Then there’s his reported three homes in his homeland of Finland, as well properties in Dubai and Thailand.

How Marcus Rashford benefited from Sliding Doors moment at Man Utd, or he could be playing for Wigan

MARCUS RASHFORD arrived on the scene at Manchester United by glorious accident – just like his current managers with club and country.A knee injury to Wayne Rooney, a late pull-out from Anthony Martial and a striker who’s ‘Manc born and bred’ was thrust in to United’s starting line-up for the Europa League tie against Danish club Midtjylland.
Marcus Rashford scored twice on his unexpected debut against MidtjyllandCredit: AFP
Yet the local lad in question should have been Will Keane – twin brother of England defender Michael.
At five years older than Rashford, Will was on the brink of a first-team breakthrough after several loan moves.
With Louis Van Gaal’s United at least one striker short throughout that 2015-16 season, Keane had made a couple of sub appearances, yet he too was struck down by injury.
So enter Rashford – ‘Marcus who?’ to all of us who were at Old Trafford that night – to see if United could avoid embarrassment after a 2-1 first-leg defeat in Denmark.
It was Rashford’s Sliding Doors moment.
Suddenly the 18-year-old kid who’d started that season in the youth team rather than the reserves was Manchester United’s centre forward.

Often a talented teenager coming through the ranks at a top-six club is widely whispered about before their first-team breakthrough.
Yet nobody had seen him coming.
Rashford – who famously won his fight with Boris Johnson to feed hungry kids at Christmas – scored twice on his first-team debut, then twice on his Premier League debut to deliver a devastating blow to Arsenal’s title hopes in a 3-2 victory.
After that he snaffled the only goal at the Etihad in his first Manchester derby.
He would go on to score on his England debut and his Champions League debut too – showcasing the supreme calmness he needed in injury-time at the Parc des Princes as United pulled off a miracle in March 2019.
That penalty to complete an astonishing Champions League comeback against Paris St Germain was the first spot-kick Rashford ever took for United.
After a mysterious VAR call gave United their chance, Paris Saint-Germain’s experienced dark-artists tried every trick to distract him and Rashford buried it.
Again United had been in the midst of an injury crisis in Europe. Again Rashford had stepped up.
According to Solskjaer, both Rashford and Romelu Lukaku were on penalty duty that night and had been asked to fight it out between them.
Rashford later revealed Lukaku let him take the spot-kick so he could grab the headlines.
Marcus Rashford was the hero as United battled past PSG in March 2019Credit: Reuters
He was never likely to miss. Rashford doesn’t do nerves. Yet had United never suffered that injury crisis in February 2016 then who knows?
He hadn’t been earmarked for a breakthrough that season and then came Jose Mourinho – hardly a man given to blooding unproven kids – along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. A year later, £75million Lukaku.
So, however talented, Rashford could have drifted – like Will Keane, currently at Wigan.
Or like the other United kid to make his debut against Midtjylland, full-back Joe Riley – now at League Two Carlisle.
Rashford was always blessed with outstanding ball skills but physically, he was a late developer.
And the X factor for any striker is the ability to deliver under pressure – a quality impossible to measure until he is given a first-team opportunity.
Those two and a half years under Mourinho were not a complete wasteland.
Rashford continued to play regularly but, more often than not, on the wing – and it never felt as though the Portuguese believed in him.
Rashford remains a key man for both United and EnglandCredit: AP
His disgusted reaction when Rashford squandered a chance against Young Boys in the Champions League group stage seemed to sum up their relationship.
Yet even before he was appointed as United’s caretaker boss, Solskjaer had recognised a kindred goal-poaching spirit in Rashford.
Four seasons ago, he’d give the young Englishman a pep talk about rediscovering that calmness in front of goal which had given him his breakthrough in the first place.
As soon as Solskjaer took over as caretaker boss, Rashford was revitalised.
He scored the first goal of the Norwegian’s reign after just three minutes at Cardiff, then netted again against Bournemouth.
Although his magnificent assist for Paul Pogba was the highlight of that match, with United clearly discovering their joie de vivre.
England boss Southgate, like Solskjaer, stumbled upon his current job as a lucky caretaker, having suffered relegation in his previous Premier League job.
And even though he missed a crucial spot-kick in the Euro 2020 Final, he still remains a key part of the Three Lions’ future plans.
Opportunism is a crucial in top-level football. Solskjaer and Southgate both recognise that quality in Rashford. More
