Fans baffled by worst ‘refereeing decision ever’ as Halifax star is sent off after being ‘CLOTHESLINED’ by official

FOOTBALL fans have been left baffled after Halifax player Luke Summerfield was sent off despite being “CLOTHESLINED” by the referee. The incident took place midway through Halifax’s 1-1 draw with Southend in the National League.
Referee Paul Marsden struck Luke Summerfield in the face with his wayward arm
The midfielder went to push the ref’s arm away but accidentally hit him back
Summerfield received a red card for his actions
With the ball trickling out of play referee Paul Marsden signalled for a Halfiax throw-in, but his wayward arm appeared to catch Summerfield in the face.
The veteran midfielder, 35, went to push the ref’s arm away and accidentally caught Marsden in the face too, before going down to ground after appearing to have been poked in the eye.
Despite his injury Summerfield received his marching orders, leaving Shaymen boss Chris Millington furious.
He complained after the match: “I just don’t get it. The referee’s probably not helped himself by just going to his pocket immediately, he’s not really given himself any time to make such a big decision.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
“Luke Summerfield was clotheslined by him, he’s been hit in the windpipe and he’s flinched, and the referee thinks that that flinch is an attack on him.
“It’s absolutely clear from the footage I’ve just been shown that it isn’t that.
“We know there’s not a player in this squad who would verbally abuse a referee let alone physically abuse a referee and then when you take it to the next level, Luke Summerfield is the least likely person I’ve ever met to do either of those things.
“The ref’s made a big mistake, and massively impacted the game, but hopefully he’ll learn from it and we won’t experience that when he’s here the next time.”

Fans were equally confused by the ref’s call with one describing it as the “comfortably one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen”.
Another fan said: “That’s a joke and he shouldn’t referee again this season.”
A third wrote: “Referees are trying to start a civil war this season.”
And another commented: “Worst decision I have seen. Ref needs to stop reffing altogether. Farcial decision.” More

Van Dijk was judged to deny Toon ace Alexander Isak a goalscoring opportunity when he fouled him on the edge of the area, seeing the 32-year-old handed a straight red card.
However, the Reds captain was left fuming with the decision and took it up directly with referee John Brooks and fourth official Craig Pawson – with footage from the exchange revealed to the public.
The X-rated rant saw Van Dijk label the decision a “f***ing joke” before continuing his complaints while heading down the tunnel at St James’ Park.
Van Dijk missed Liverpool’s final Premier League outing – a 3-0 win over Aston Villa – before the International break.

But he will now also miss their first game back against Wolves on September 16, with Liverpool sitting third in the league after taking ten points from a possible 12.
An FA statement confirmed Van Dijk had been charged with improper conduct, landing him an additional game ban and £100,000 fine.
It read: “The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute.

“Full written reasons for this case will be published in due course.”
Following the decision, Van Dijk released a statement on social media.
He said: “I’d just like to make clear I totally accept the panel’s decision.
“It was the first red card of my Liverpool career and I let my frustrations get the better of me in an intense and heated moment.
“I apologised immediately after the game to the match officials and take full responsibility.”
He continued: “Time to move forward now.
“I will continue supporting the team in every way I can.”
Van Dijk also admitted he deserved his red card when speaking to reporters over the International break, but insisted the move was out of character.
He said: “That was not typical for me.
“But it was the red card anyway. I’ve never got one before at Liverpool, and I think only about four times in my entire career. But apart from that I still started the season well.”

Newly-released audio reveals how VAR convinced ref Taylor to overturn Kai Havertz’s penalty shout in Arsenal vs Man Utd

AUDIO of the decision to overturn a penalty awarded to Kai Havertz during Arsenals’ victory over Manchester United has been released. The audio and video footage was released as part of the new Match Officials: Mic’d Up show on Sky Sports.

But VAR intervened to overturn the decisionCredit: Rex

The programme sees PGMOL chief Howard Webb review the weekend’s decisions alongside Michael Owen in the Sky Sports studio.
The show sees the refs chief go through both correct and incorrect calls from the weekend in an attempt to increase transparency in the refereeing process.
Tuesday’s show saw them break down the decision to overturn Anthony Taylor’s call to award a penalty to Kai Havertz after he was judged to have been fouled by Aaron Wan-Bissaka – with Webb concluding it was the right call.
Webb said: “I was watching this game and thought to myself, that looks like a penalty kick.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
“At full speed as Kai Havertz goes between Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro. The penalty was given and we know that the VAR will always check every penalty situation.
“It was a good use of VAR. The referee believed that Wan-Bissaka had tripped Havertz, but the video shows something quite different that there’s no actual contact initially.
“Another step by Havertz, his leg goes into Wan-Bissaka. The VAR, really calm and concise, recognises all of that, thinks it’s a clear and obvious error. I agree. Recommends a review. We get to the right decision.”
The man in charge of VAR that day was Australian Jared Gilette, who explained to Taylor that while on first watch it did seem as though Wan-Bissaka had tripped Havertz, replays showed that the German had let his leg trail – and initiated the contact as he went down.

After Gilette explained his view to on-field referee Taylor, the decision was overturned and a drop-ball was given to restart play.
There was also VAR controversy late on as Alejandro Garnacho’s 88th minute strike was ruled out for a tight offside.
The goal would have put United 2-1 up and possibly secured all three points for Erik Ten Hag’s side. Instead, Declan Rice struck a dramatic 96th minute winner for the Gunners before Gabriel Jesus scored a third to seal the win for Arsenal. More

Premier League release audio of VAR calls including Onana foul as fans blast ‘it’s 100 times more inept than I imagined’

THE PREMIER LEAGUE has released VAR audio from major incidents in the league so far this season and fans have been left fuming.Whilst reviewing the audio, PGMOL Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb has spoken out about the decision by Simon Hooper to not award a penalty for Andre Onana’s clumsy collision with Sasa Kalajdzic.

The incident had sparked huge controversy when Onana collided with the striker during Man United’s matchup against Wolves.
The Premier League has now revealed the VAR’s audio from the incident which prompted an apology from John Moss for getting the decision wrong at the time.
Most fans thought it should have been a penalty to Wolves and it seems that Webb is in agreement them.
He said: “I think from the outset I want to say that should have led to an intervention by VAR. We should have seen a video review being recommended and the referee should have gone to the screen.

“I’m confident he would have seen the images that we’ve seen and would have awarded a penalty.”
Webb went on to say he thinks that the officials were overthinking the decision and therefore failed to do the right thing.
He said: “[The VAR] starts to go down the road, I believe, towards recommending a video review, but then he overthinks it a little bit. Sometimes the VARs can do that.
“They’re trying to identify what the game would expect in terms of what is and isn’t a clear and obvious error.”

He then admitted that it was a mistake to not recommend a review, explaining: “We didn’t recommend a review. We should have done. We acknowledge that as an error, which, of course, was disappointing.
“We took the learning from that, obviously, to try and ensure going forward that type of error doesn’t happen again.”
The decision has left fans fuming and they took to social media to share their reactions to Webb’s explanations.
One said: “That VAR/Ref audio is incredible on that Onana decision on the opening weekend. Howard Webb said that VAR overthought it and it was a huge error hence the apology…”
Whilst another added: “It’s an absolute disgrace and they are about as incompetent as I assumed. This hasn’t cleared anything up.”
A third commented: “My word this is 100x more inept than I would’ve imagined. The ref and VAR have no clue what they’re doing here.”
The Onana incident was just one of the decisions that were reviewed by Webb and the Premier League.
They also discussed incidents including Kai Havertz overturned penalty against Man United and Virgil Van Dijk’s red card against Newcastle.
Webb agreed with the officials in concern to both the situations and believed that the correct decisions were made.
He did however admit to another mistake by the referees already this season.
Nathan Ake’s goal vs Fulham at the weekend had been a contentious subject with many fans claiming that it should’ve been disallowed for offside.

And it would seem they were correct in their frustrations as Webb admitted he also thought it was a mistake to award the goal.
Speaking on the incident he said: “Unfortunately, it wasn’t identified on the day, and, of course, the learning from this one will also be shared amongst all of our group because we’re always looking to do better each and every week, and this was an error.”

Arouca were 1-0 up when Porto were awarded a 90th penalty after Mehdi Taremi went down in the box.
Referee Miguel Nogueira was sent over to the pitchside monitor but a technical fault meant he was unable to communicate with his fellow officials.
After a long delay he was surprisingly handed a mobile phone and began to deliberate the incident despite not being able to watch a replay.
Eventually, the refs chose to overturn the call and no spot-kick was given.

The Refereeing Council of Portugal’s Football Federation said the malfunction was due to a power failure at the Estadio do Dragao.
However, Porto strongly deny this and claim the error was down to a worker not connecting the VAR cables properly.
A club statement read: “This fact was acknowledged by the Altice technicians themselves when they replaced the equipment, which was then supported by the stadium’s power.”
Porto also want the result annulled or the match replayed due to “misconduct by the refereeing team.”

Their statement continued: “Nogueira’s action constitutes a violation of the rules of the game and an error of law with a potential serious impact on the outcome of the match.”
The chaotic game continued with 22 minutes of stoppage time played to compensate for the delay.
Porto were awarded another penalty in the 106th minute only for Wenderson Galeno’s effort from 12 yards to be saved by Arouca keeper Ignacio De Arruabarrena.
They piled on the pressure as they looked for the equaliser, which eventually came via Evanilson with the clock at 90+19.
Porto are currently second in the Primeira League after four matches and Arouca are seventh.
The Dragons have qualified for this season’s Champions League and are in a group with Barcelona, Shakhtar Donestk and Royal Antwerp. More

Arouca scored first via Cristo Gonzalez in the 83rd minute before things took a hectic and unique turn.
Porto were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute with VAR deciding to review the decision.

Nogueira decided to overturn his own call and no spot-kick was given.
The drama continued as Porto were then awarded with another penalty in the 106th minute.
This time the spot-kick stood, but Wenderson Galeno saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Ignacio De Arruabarrena as Arouca thought they had held on to the three points.
Porto continued to pile the pressure on and eventually equalised when Evanilson netted with the clock at 90+19.

Eventually, the final whistle was blown with 22 minutes of stoppage time played.
This all came after Porto striker Mehdi Taremi saw his first-half goal chalked off for offside after a VAR check.
The actions of Nogueira has left Sergio Conceicao’s side raging and they released a shock statement after the game asking for the match to be annulled due to misconduct by the ref.
They claim using the phone and not looking at images of the foul on Taremi for the overturned penalty violated league rules and impacted the outcome of the match.
It is Porto’s second week of drama in a row following their 2-1 win away at Rio Ave last weekend.
Porto trailed 1-0 only to find the back of the net twice in injury time to seal an incredible comeback victory.

Fulham furious as Man City goal allowed to stand despite Mike Dean raging ‘it has to be disallowed, it can’t stand’

FULHAM furiously slammed VAR once again as Nathan Ake’s controversial goal was allowed to stand. And Mike Dean raged it simply “has to be disallowed”.

Manchester City defender Ake – completely unmarked – headed in from a corner on the stroke of half-time in their Premier League clash at the Etihad.
And the ball bounced beyond Bernd Leno into the bottom corner of the Fulham goal, restoring City’s lead after Tim Ream cancelled out Julian Alvarez’s opener.
But the Fulham goalkeeper, defenders and coaching staff all reacted angrily when the goal was allowed to stand.
That is because they were adamant Manuel Akanji was interfering with play as he stood in an offside position.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
VAR looked at lots of replays and deemed that the fellow defender did not touch it or impact play.
That is despite Akanji moving towards the ball and missing it with his boot – as Leno waited to dive until after the ball had gone past the Swiss ace.
Therefore, by the letter of the law, Akanji was committing an offside offence by challenging for the ball and attempting to play it.
But VAR Tony Harrington did not instruct referee Michael Oliver to take a look at the replay and the goal was given, prompting further fury from Marco Silva and his team as the gaffer risked yet another yellow card.

Ex-Premier League ref Mike Dean let rip at his former colleagues in the Sky Sports studio.
He said: “In my opinion, no, it just can’t stand.
“He’s jumped over the ball, he has to be interfering.
“The player is there and Leno has hesitated. It just has to be disallowed.”
And fans on Twitter also piled in on the “shocking” refereeing by the VAR.
One said: “Pointless having VAR if they’re allowing goals like that. This is pure cheating.”
Another wrote: “Fulham robbed. That should be given offside. Akanji obstructs Leno’s view clearly.”
A third added: “Akanji in an offside position and blocking Leno’s view, yet Ale’s goal is still given. What a disgrace. VAR is a joke.”

A fourth fumed: “Akanji clearly interfering with the ball and Man City have been given the goal. The league is fixed 100 per cent shocking officiating yet again.”
And a final user commented: “How on earth is that goal given? Akanji is definitely interfering. Leno can’t dive until the ball goes past him! Utter nonsense.”

I’m a former Premier League ref – Sir Alex never gave me the hairdryer but it’s absurd to say Man Utd get more decisions

FORMER Premier League referee Mike Dean has rubbished claims that Manchester United get favourable decisions. The former official has labelled the idea that United get more decisions than other teams as “absurd”.

Dean insists that all teams are treated the same and even admitted that he has got on the wrong side of former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson during his time as a referee.
But despite Sir Alex’s infamously fiery temper, Dean has said he was never on the end of one of his “hairdryer treatments”.
The VAR and former man in the middle has been speaking about Stuart Attwell’s decision to give United a penalty at the weekend.
Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot with the penalty crucial in the Manchester club’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

Speaking to the Mail Online, he said: “It’s absurd to think that an official would walk out on to that pitch feeling as if he has to do United any favours. That includes Saturday’s referee Stuart Attwell.
“You may think their penalty against Nottingham Forest was harsh, but there was enough in Danilo’s challenge on Marcus Rashford for it to be awarded.
“Attwell saw that Rashford was caught by Danilo and VAR Robert Jones verified that it was not a clear and obvious error.”
Dean even said that he used to love refereeing at Old Trafford and dispelled any rumours of favouritism towards United by labelling it as a “myth”.

But he admitted he was thankful he was never on the end of one of the Scots’ telling offs.
