      Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes have back-up plan car and willing to SCRAP 2023 car if they fall behind Red Bull again

      MERCEDES are willing to scrap their 2023 car and introduce a back-up design if they fall behind Red Bull. That is according to Sky Sports F1 reporter Ted Kravitz who believes the German-based team are putting in place measures to avoid last season’s slow start.

      Mercedes installed a unique “zero sidepod” design to their car last year as F1 saw sweeping rule changes that triggered major adjustments across the grid.
      But the eight-times consecutive constructor’s champions quickly found themselves on the back foot with their bouncing car.
      Red Bull and Ferrari led the field with Mercedes trying to cling on amid some embarrassing results.
      Kravitz reports that Lewis Hamilton’s team are keeping faith with the car’s philosophy – but have other ideas on hand just in case.

      He told Sky Sports: “They’re giving their big idea, which was a failure last year, one more go. But I believe they have a ‘Plan B’ in production.
      “If they need to, they can go to a Plan B – which is the Red Bull or Ferrari-style of doing things – in the middle of the season.”
      Mercedes are looking to be competitive again after a year out in the wilderness.
      They will get to put their car concept to test in pre-season over the next few days.

      Testing last year gave the first sign that Mercedes had fallen from their perch with both Hamilton and teammate George Russell expressing frustration with the car’s flaws.
      Kravitz thinks the once dominant team will soon return to the forefront following their mini-revival towards the end of the season.
      He added: “These rules are what they are for a few years yet, so they’ve got to get it right at some point.
      “But at the moment they’re saying ‘Look we think we’ve got a proper handle on what went wrong last year, we still think our way – which is unique in the pit lane – having very slim sidepods is the way to go aerodynamically.
      “Most of the downforce is generated by the floor, which you can’t see, but they’re saying ‘Don’t expect anything too soon.'” More

      His deal included bonuses for winning races, taking podiums and winning both the drivers’ and teams’ championship titles.
      Verstappen’s earnings dwarfed that of Lewis Hamilton, who is in the process of negotiating a new deal with his Mercedes team.
      Hamilton, who went winless for the first time in his F1 career last season, is understood to have earned around £29million, claim RacingNews365.
      He has now had first talks with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff over a new deal with the contract is expected to be a formality.

      Hamilton, 38, is likely to be offered similar terms to his last contract.
      However, in the long-term he is seeking an ambassador position with Mercedes for when he eventually does call time on his racing career. 
      Both Hamilton and Verstappen have private endorsements too with the Dutchman having just signed a deal with Heineken.
      Meanwhile, Jenson Button expects Hamilton to come out of the blocks flying when the season starts next week in Bahrain.

      However, Button, who was Hamilton’s teammate at McLaren between 2010 and 2012, said when he struggled with an uncompetitive car, it led to him contemplating retirement.
      Button said: “It’s something we all go through in our careers. It’s a reason why a lot of people retire, they are not in a winning car anymore. That’s why I left.
      “You can deal with the pressure you put yourself under and the calendar, if you are in a winning car. When you are not, you are like ‘I’ve had enough, I want to get out’.
      “Mercedes have given him a winning car for so many years. Last year obviously they didn’t but the car did win a race last year [with George Russell], so you would say at the end of the year they were strong.
      “I think he’ll start this year flat-out. He’s going to be on it from the word go, so I look forward to seeing that.
      “It’s going to put a lot of pressure on George; it’s a good pairing. But Lewis will be on it from the word go and I look forward to that fight.” More

      A SUPERCOMPUTER has predicted the outcome of the new Formula One season as Lewis Hamilton looks to end Max Verstappen’s winning run. The Dutchman has claimed the last two Drivers’ Championship crowns with no one getting even close to the dominant Red Bull driver this season.

      With all ten teams hard at work improving their cars over the winter, it can be difficult to judge the strengths and weakness of the field ahead of next month’s opening race in Bahrain.
      But a supercomputer from BonusCodeBets has chewed up all the available information ahead of the new season and expects Verstappen to triumph again.
      The 25-year-old was in the form of his life in 2022 and won 15 of the 22 Grand Prix last season.
      He wrapped up the title with four races to go and left all of his rivals in his dust.

      Hamilton has been tipped to finish second in this year’s table.
      The supercomputer believes the Mercedes man will miss out on a record-breaking eighth world title but improve on his sixth-place from last season.
      Meanwhile, the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are predicted to finish 3rd and 5th with Hamilton’s teammate George Russell sandwiched in between them.
      Brit racer Lando Norris is expected to be the best of the rest behind the dominant Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari teams.

      Toto Wolff and Co have avoided going down the route of making their car more like Red Bull’s high performing RB18 – with Hamilton proud of Merc’s own creativity and innovation.
      Amid the likes of McLaren taking inspiration from Red Bull’s sidepods – Hamilton said: “Of course you can see that some of the cars are approaching what a Red Bull might look like, perhaps with the exception of Ferrari.

      “We’ve always had our own mind and have always been a team that’s incredibly creative and innovative and likes to do it our way.
      “And I think that’s worked in the past.”
      After Mercedes’ encouraging finish to last season, fans will be excited to see Hamilton and team-mate George Russell back in action in Bahrain on March 5.
      Speaking at the launch of the W14, team principal Wolff said: “Last year was difficult but it came with lots of learnings.

      He then continued: “W13 certainly had performance which we never were able to unlock and put all its downforce on the ground.
      “Our car performed very well at the end of the season.
      “However, we still had the famous bouncing at some circuits and the car never gave the drivers good feedback, which limited them in being able to really push.
      “We have tried to keep all the goodness of the W13 and address its weaknesses.”

      The pressure will be on new Ferrari team principle Fred Vasseur to deliver a title winning car as The Scuderia look for their first drivers title since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.
      The 2022 car was fast but unreliable with Charles Leclerc taking 3 victories whilst Carlos Sainz took his maiden F1 win at Silverstone.
      Mercedes had a difficult 2022 season with the Brackley outfit only registering a solitary victory courtesy of George Russell at Interlagos.
      Lewis Hamilton failed to win a race for the first time in his Formula One career in 2022 and will be desperate to get back on the top step of the podium in 2023.

      Elsewhere on the grid Fernando Alonso replaced the retiring Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin, Nico Hulkenburg returned to the sport with Haas, Pierre Gasly joined Alpine, Nyck de Vries joined Alpha Tauri, Oscar Piastri replaced Daniel Ricciardo at Mclaren and Logan Sargeant joined Williams.

      The Dutch star previously refused to participate in the filming because he claimed it gives a false portrayal of what goes on behind the scenes in F1.
      However, the 25-year-old held talks with the creators and was satisfied with how they addressed his concerns before making his U-turn.
      Verstappen said: “I always wanted to be part of it but said it needs to be a realistic image of how I am.
      “That’s why we needed to talk about it first and they understood my side of it, and I understand in general that when you create a show there needs to be drama and it needs to be exciting.

      “But I’m a guy who thinks it’s also important that you are portrayed well, and not start to have comments put under different footage, when it didn’t happen like that.
      “So I explained that was my view and that otherwise I didn’t want to be a part of it.

      SPECSAVERS joined F1 fans in poking fun at Red Bull after the world champions unveiled their new car. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will take to the track in the new RB19 later this month as Formula One returns for pre-season testing.

      Specsavers summed up the feelings of many underwhelmed race fans
      Fans were quick to use a meme from the US Office to compare Red Bull’s 2022 and 2023 car designs
      But motorsport fans could not help but notice the striking resemblance that the Red Bull’s ‘new’ livery had to last year’s design, despite a huge online build-up by the drinks brand.
      Keeping with tradition, the manufacturers did not tweak much on the colour template with dark blue covering most of the car.
      Specsavers were among the first to point out the similarities as fans jokingly reflected on Red Bull’s predictable design after their launch today in America.
      One said: “For some reason, I dream of a new livery every year, and ever year I’m let down.”

      Another said: “Massive credit to the designers, really pushed the boat out this year.”
      And a third fan said: “Social media manager uploaded the 2022 car.”
      While the reveal may have been underwhelming for some fans, there was some more notable aspects of the announcement.
      Red Bull became the first F1 team to launch a car in the US, with American race fans getting a chance to glimpse two-time world champion Verstappen.

      The constructors also announced that they will be running a competition for fans to design a special livery for the three US races – Miami, Austin and Las Vegas – on the calendar this year.

      But the best is yet to come for those across the Atlantic.

      That’s because Las Vegas will host a stunning race later this year, with drivers zooming past iconic gambling establishments like the Bellagio and Caesar’s Palace.
      However, Red Bull chief Horner is eager to continue F1’s relentless march across America.
      He hopes to see more big cities play host to the likes of Verstappen, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
      And Horner admits he dreams of cars doing laps of the Big Apple itself, New York City.
