Liverpool vs Real Madrid: In-form Reds host Los Blancos in Champions League as Klopp plots revenge – Stream, TV

REVENGE is a dish best served on a cold Champions League night under the lights at Anfield… at least that’s what Jurgen Klopp is plotting as European champions Real Madrid come to town.Tuesday’s Last-16 first leg tie is a repeat of last May’s Champions League final.

And Liverpool will be hoping for some sort of redemption for the 1-0 loss they suffered inside the Stade de France by knocking out Real Madrid and ensuring a new King of Europe is crowned in three months time.
Klopp and Co will, of course, be hoping it turns out to be them.
Liverpool have seemingly found their feet again at the right time.
Klopp’s men turned their February around after recording just one Premier League win in five prior to last Monday’s 2-0 Merseyside derby win over Everton.

They also put top-four rivals Newcastle to the sword on Saturday, beating the Toon convincingly in their own back yard with a 2-0 win.
Like Liverpool, Real are playing catch-up on their league objectives after a poor start to the campaign.
They’ve won seven of their last 13 games, dropping points in LaLiga and losing to Barcelona in the Super Cup in that time – but also lifting the Club World Cup.

They remain behind Barcelona by eight points in their bid to retain their LaLiga title.

And Liverpool will be encouraged by Real’s busy schedule in between their Champions League round of 16 clashes, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men playing rivals Atletico and Barca, as well as Real Betis and Espanyol before March 15’s Bernabeu dust-up.
    What is their form like?
Liverpool are on a two-game win streak after enduring a horrible start to 2022.
They recorded back-to-back 2-0 wins over rivals Everton and Newcastle.
However, in the nine games played since New Year, Liverpool have won just three with heavy defeats coming against Wolves, Brighton and Brentford.
Real, meanwhile, are on a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions.
They beat Osasuna 2-0 and Elche 4-0 in their last two LaLiga outings.
Ancelotti’s men also lifted the Club World Cup after wins over Al Ahly and Al-Hilal.

What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?
Liverpool are sweating over the fitness of summer signing Darwin Nunez after the striker went off with a shoulder injury in the win over Newcastle.
The 23-year-old scored in the game, taking his season total to 11 across all competitions.
Luis Diaz is expected to miss the Anfield clash having just returned from a long-term injury.
The Colombian winger could, however, play in the return leg next March.
Midfield maestro Thiago is also due to miss out with a hip injury, while Calvin Ramsey’s season struggles with injury continue.
As for Real, they’ve been dealt a double injury blow in midfield.
Both Aurelien Tchouameni and Toni Kroos are not part of the squad that will fly out to Merseyside on Monday.
Defender Ferland Mendy is also out having missed the last month with a thigh issue.
There is also a slight concern over Karim Benzema. The Ballon d’Or holder missed out at the weekend with muscle fatigue, however Carlo Ancelotti has said “hopefully he will” be available for Liverpool.

Who will be the star men?
The obvious star man for Liverpool will be Mohamed Salah.
Salah hasn’t had the best of seasons – but neither have his team-mates.
Despite this, he’s still managed 18 goals across all competitions with seven of those coming in the Champions League, making him the competition’s top scorer so far.
He also has eight assists to his name and picked up a goal and an assist in his last two outings for Liverpool.
January signing Cody Gakpo has seemingly found his feet.
The Dutch international has two goals in his last two Prem appearances.
For Los Blancos, Benzema will be one Liverpool will be hoping to nullify.
The 35-year-old has struck 16 times this term – but none of them have come in Europe’s top club competition.
In fact, Benzema has just four appearances in the Champions League during what has been an injury plagued season.
Vinicius Jr is another Liverpool will be well aware of, with the Brazilian scoring the winner in last May’s final after Trent Alexander-Arnold switched off at the back post.
The trickster, 22, has 16 goals and eight assists this season.
Mohamed Salah has outscored Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema
    What have the managers said?
Klopp said after drawing Real last year: “The first thing that we can say about this draw is it is proper Champions League.
“This is a tie that speaks for itself and one that we should all be excited about.
“I know we have played Real Madrid in a couple of recent finals but it is not so often that our two clubs have met in a two-legged tie so now we can look forward to this happening.
“Real’s European record is the best around. We know this. But we also know that ours is not too bad. On top of this, we know that we have Anfield and everyone knows what this means.
“It is a really good draw. A really exciting draw.
“The games themselves are still a few months away but it does not take a great deal of imagination to think what the atmosphere will be like at both games.
“There is a lot of football to be played before this, of course, so we will focus on each game as it comes but yes, this draw has given us something special to look forward to.”
Ancelotti has said after beating Liverpool in last May’s final: “Looking back, people said oh PSG were unlucky, Chelsea were unlucky, Manchester City were unlucky, this was practically the only game where people thought we were more or less on the same level.
“I think it helped that Liverpool were easier to decipher than the others because they have a very clear identity and we could prepare the way that we did.
“We knew what strategy to take, don’t give them space behind the defence to run into.
“Perhaps our football wasn’t extraordinarily beautiful tonight on an aesthetic level, but playing out from the back to incentivise their pressing wasn’t a great idea.
“We had a few more long balls, then when their press in our half of the pitch lessened, we got to control the ball more especially in the second half.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold faces his foe Vinicius Jr once again, as Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League

TRENT Alexander-Arnold can be forgiven if he suffers an attack of pre-match nerves before the Champions League clash at home to Real Madrid. It’s that man again.Once more he has to pit his defensive skills – not the strongest part of his game – against the attacking threat of Vinicius Junior.
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to face nemesis Vinicius Jr againCredit: Getty
Alexander-Arnold will need no reminding of how things turned out in both of the last two seasons.
In April of 2021 Liverpool travelled to Spain to meet Real in the first leg of the quarter final. Wonderfully supplied by Tony Kroos, Vinicius ran riot, scoring twice in the 3-1 win which Liverpool proved unable to peg back at Anfield.
And then last year in Paris they met again, this time in the final. Liverpool had the better of the game.
But at one end Thibaut Courtois was in magnificent form in goal for Real, while at the other it was Vinicius who proved the difference, scoring the only goal of the match.

Six years ago it seemed like madness when Real paid over £40million for a 16 year old Brazilian winger who had yet to make his senior professional debut.
Looking back, it now comes across as a bargain. Of course it was a gamble.
No one can predict with precision how such a youngster will develop as a player and as a person – especially when, after the age of 18, he has to go through a potentially awkward transition into adulthood in a different culture on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
But it has proved to be a move that has changed the market, making European clubs even keener to sign up South American adolescents.

Real have already snapped up Endrick of Palmeiras, another 16 year old sensation, who will be making his way to Spain in the middle of next year when he hits the 18 mark.
In the case of Vinicius it clearly helps that he comes across as so calm and mature.
He has found himself at the centre of disgraceful scenes of racism, and in the face of inexcusable scenes – rival fans went as far as to depict a large Vinicius doll being lynched – he has retained his focus and his dignity.
It helps, of course, that he is so well able to give his answer on the field. His displays have been outstanding. He has been given a task – to get behind the opposing defence down the left flank and both set up and score goals.
The relationship with centre forward Karim Benzema has not always been straightforward. But the experience and quality of the French striker have clearly eased his progress, and Vinicius has also done remarkably well to come up with the combination of precision at pace.
It is no easy task to be accurate at the speed he is moving, especially as his strongest foot is the right one. But his crossing and his finishing keep getting better.
Liverpool will hope to protect Alexander-Arnold by winning the battle higher up the pitch.
Jurgen Klopp’s midfield has shown signs of rejuvenation, and will seek to deny the likes of Kroos and Luka Modric the time on the ball to bring Vinicius into the game – hence the importance of Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde as the most dynamic force that Real possess – and Valverde is increasingly a target for pulled back crosses from Vinicius as he bursts into the box.
If Liverpool’s gameplan works out and they are able to impose themselves on proceedings, then Alexander-Arnold should be able to show off his outstanding attacking quality.
But however effective the Liverpool press, there will surely be some point in the game when Vinicius gets away, and Alexander-Arnold will have to strive to catch him.

A yellow card will be bad news for the Liverpool right back – perhaps tinged with just the slightest bit of relief.
It will mean that Alexander-Arnold is suspended for the second leg in the Bernabeu.

The 23-year-old has just over a year left on his contract with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2024 after the club triggered a year extension recently.
The right back has been in excellent form this season and has established himself in the Portugal setup, starting three out of their five games at the World Cup.
United legend Cristiano Ronaldo was very impressed with the right back’s professionalism.
He said: “He’s one of the most professional youngsters I’ve ever met.”

Spanish outlet AS have reported that the Red Devils have been trying for months to get Dalot tied down to a new deal and don’t want to head into the summer with the player having 12 months left on his contract.

The 23-year-old netted a cool opener against West Ham as he volleyed home Enzo Fernandez’s cross.

And if his good performances are kept up for the rest of the season, Chelsea may pull the trigger to turn his loan move into a permanent one.
However, the Londoners have now been joined in the race to sign the £124million-rated forward by Real Madrid, according to Fichajes.

Klopp, 55, extended his deal with the Merseyside outfit in April last year as he agreed to remain in charge until 2026.
But Liverpool have dropped off significantly this season following a dreadful run of form.
The Reds sit 10th in the Premier League table as the pressure continues to ramp up on Klopp.
And while his seven-year stint at the club leaves him with a huge amount of credit in the bank, he could still be approaching the end of his Anfield reign.

According to El Nacional, Klopp leaving Liverpool would see Real Madrid swoop in for the former Borussia Dortmund coach.
Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti has a contract to keep him in the Spanish capital until the end of the 2023/24 season.
But with Real trailing Barcelona by eight points in LaLiga, a campaign without major silverware – excluding the Club World Cup – would likely see Ancelotti depart.
And president Florentino Perez has always been an admirer of Klopp – who has worked wonders at Mainz, Dortmund and Liverpool.

It is being reported they would attempt to sign both Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe in a bid to drag Klopp to the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are all thought to be interested in the England international.
He is expected to leave Dortmund this summer after three years at the club – where he has contributed 20 goals and 24 assists in 117 games.
And Klopp is a big fan of the teenage midfielder – who increased his price tag after a sensational World Cup.
Mbappe, 24, is another player Klopp is reportedly interested in.

The Athletic report that the 24-year-old remains on their radar as the club plan for life after Ballon D’Or Karim Benzema.
