Cole Palmer branded ‘ridiculous’ after filthy skill ‘straight out of FC24’ in Chelsea’s win over Fulham

CHELSEA fans were astonished after Cole Palmer produced a “ridiculous” piece of skill in their 1-0 win over Fulham. The Blues forward, 21, settled the game with a first-half penalty after Raheem Sterling was fouled by Issa Diop.

But it was a moment later in the match that left Chelsea fans in awe.
A hopeful punt upfield looked set to fly past Palmer – who was just inside the Fulham half with his back to goal.
But the young England international remarkably managed to control the ball with the outside of his left boot, flicking it up over his head and running on to lay it off for Noni Madueke.
The deft flick and pass was shared on social media immediately after the final whistle.

And it triggered a huge reaction from the Blues faithful as they heaped praise on their new talisman.
One said: “Oh my… Palmer almost with the skill of the season, what a goal that would have been.”
Another added: “Cole Palmer with all the fancy right stick FC24 skill moves that I can’t do….”
A third replied: “Cole Palmer you are ridiculous.”

Signing the Romanian defender is a major boost to Ange Postecoglou’s squad after beating Bayern Munich for his signature.
But there has been doubt over whether the Dragusin would be eligible to feature in this weekend’s squad at Old Trafford.
Spurs have been battling to get the 21-year-old’s work permit in time for the Premier League clash.
And it has now been revealed that Dragusin has been given the green light from the Government to play.

On Friday boss Postecoglou revealed whether the loanee will make Sunday’s team.
He said: “We’ll see. Hopefully, all the paperwork gets done and if it does, he will be in the squad.”
German giants Bayern tried to snatch the centre-back last minute from Spurs.
With Dragusin’s agent, Florin Manea admitting he was shocked his client was so committed to Postecoglou’s side.

Dragusin began his career at local side Sportul Studentesc before moving on to Regal Sport Bucharest who have an affiliation with Atletico Madrid.
But the La Liga side missed the boat on the centre-half, who moved to Italy in 2018 to link up with Juventus and their academy.
Dragusin could have been a star on our shores sooner – snubbing Chelsea as a teenager to sign for the Serie A giants.
PSG were also interested, but the Italian side moved fast to secure the talent – paying around £215,000 to secure the services of the then Romania U16 captain.
And on loan last term he assisted Genoa in gaining promotion from Serie B.
Incredibly, he missed just 45 minutes of a tiring campaign – contributing to his club’s impressive defensive record of conceding the second least in the division.
He now joins newbie and fellow loanee German forward Timo Werner at Spurs. More

Chelsea player ratings: Palmer superb but Colwill struggles as Blues grind out vital win against local rivals Fulham

CHELSEA battled to a vital win against local rivals Fulham as Cole Palmer scored the only goal of the game.Palmer, who is the Blues’ top scorer, made no mistake with a late first-half penalty to make it nine for the season and three Premier League wins in a row for the first time under Mauricio Pochettino.
Cole Palmer impressed as he scored the only goal of the game in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over local rivals Fulham
The win made it three in a row for Chelsea in the Premier League – the first time that’s happened under Mauricio Pochettino
It was far from easy for Chelsea, with Fulham battling to the bitter end and Djordje Petrovic making two excellent saves to keep them out.
Chelsea – who were criticised by fans for a bizarre promotion in the crowd while the game was being played – twice hit the post in search of a second goal.
Fulham pushed for a leveller late on but despite a long spell of pressure they were unable to create a clear-cut chance, allowing Chelsea to take three points and west London bragging rights.
Here’s how SunSport’s Tom Sheen rated the Chelsea players…
    READ MORE CHELSEA NEWS
    Djordje Petrovic – 8/10
Another composed performance in between the sticks for the young keeper. Chelsea may well have stumbled upon their long-term No 1.
Made excellent saves to deny Harry Wilson and Raul Jimenez and went about his business with an absolute minimum amount of fuss. Quite the opposite of previous No 1 keeper Robert Sanchez.
    Malo Gusto – 6
Got up and down the wing extremely well and did a reasonable job of keeping Willian in check.
However, he was extremely lucky not to see red for a seemingly high tackle on the former Chelsea star when the score was still 0-0.
    Most read in Football
    Axel Disasi – 6
Defended stoutly when needed but still struggles to look convincing in possession.
A couple of nervy moments in the first half but looked much better after half time.
    Thiago Silva – 7
Like Disasi had a couple of moments where his defence looked a bit ragged, but managed his back four impressively after the break.
A couple of late tackles and a clever tactical foul brought huge cheers from the home fans.
    Levi Colwill – 6
Better than he was against Middlesbrough but still plainly not a left-back and often appears to be struggling with his positioning and whether or not to engage his man.
Doesn’t offer much going forward and skied a great chance with his weaker foot from just outside the box.
Levi Colwill did not have the best afternoon
    Moises Caicedo – 6
A better performance from the midfielder but still not dominating games and opponents as a £100 million player should.
Having said that, he was often left exposed by his midfield mates who were caught up field.
    Enzo Fernandes – 7
The Chelsea No 8 was superb in possession and whipped in a couple of really threatening crosses – one that Armando Broja headed over and another that saw Raheem Sterling hit the post (although he was probably offside).
However, his score is held back by his inability to affect the game without the ball. Too often he left Caicedo alone in midfield and allowed runners to burst past him, giving Fulham plenty of opportunity.
    Conor Gallagher – 7
Decent enough from the skipper who was neat in possession and offered a couple of driving runs forward.
Not quite as dynamic or energetic as he was earlier in the season, however, but nearly scored with a superb effort that saw him smash the post with a swerving, outside-of-the-boot effort.
    Cole Palmer – 8
Chelsea’s top performer on the day with everything good running through the winger.
Provided a lovely disguised ball for Raheem Sterling to win the penalty, then slotted it home coolly.
Some brilliant play in the second-half included a lovely flick over Antonee Robinson, who will be relieved he won’t have to meet Palmer again this season.
Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer provided plenty of threat going forward
    Raheem Sterling – 7
A bit of a return to form for Sterling who had endured a couple of rough performances.
Was positive every time he got the ball in going at Kenny Tete, won the penalty and looked somewhere close to his best. Should have scored when he headed against the the post – although it would likely have been ruled out if it had gone in.
    Armando Broja – 5
Huffs and puffs and always works his hardest but still just lacks that quality in crucial moments.
Unlucky to see his first half header fly over, but was found wanting in a couple of moments where a quicker decision may have brought dividends for the Blues.
    SUBS
    Noni Madueke (for Broja, 66) – 7
Exciting introduction from the winger who came on and immediately got the Stamford Bridge faithful out of their seats with a series of direct charges at the Fulham goal.
End product still needs work, but his direct style will always be a nightmare for defenders and he forced Bernd Leno into a smart save late on.
    Ben Chilwell (for Sterling, 76) – 6
The defender’s first action since late September and his return to the pitch was met with massive noise from the home fans.
Was brought on to play in the front three – which is where he spent a lot of his time before his injury and received a lot of criticism. Will be interesting to see in coming weeks if Poch sticks with Chilwell as a forward or drops him back into his natural position.
    Alfie Gilchrist (for Gusto, 92) – N/A
Late sub and had no time to make much of an impression on the game.
    READ MORE SUN STORIES
    Carney Chukwuemeka (for Palmer, 92) – N/A
The same as Gilchrist in terms of performance, but his return is a massive bonus for Pochettino and Chelsea, with the midfielder playing in his first game since August 20.
Subs not used: Marcus Bettinelli, Lucas Bergstrom, Benoit Badiashile, Alfie Gilchrist, Carney Chukwuemeka, Mykhailo Mudryk, Deivid Washington More

Chelsea 1 Fulham 0: Cole Palmer makes amends for Carabao Cup horror show but Malo Gusto lucky not to see red

Chelsea bounced back from their League Cup let-down with a narrow win over their West London neighbours.Yet again young Cole Palmer made the difference for the Blues, converting a penalty in first-half stoppage time after his fine pass to Raheem Sterling had tempted Fulham’s Issa Diop into a rash challenge.

The Cottagers could have no complaints about the spot-kick or the defeat after a flat display following their own Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool.
But boss Marco Silva was annoyed that VAR did not intervene to upgrade Malo Gusto’s yellow card to a red after his nasty foul on Willian a few minutes before the goal.
Chelsea’s loss at Championship side Middlesbrough was threatening to send the club into another mini-crisis.
But Palmer’s moment of inspiration and ice-cold composure postponed that, for 10 days at least.

It was a game that did little to discourage the theory that this is not one of the world’s great football rivalries.
Until added time at the end of the first half, there was very little to get excited about.
Chelsea enjoyed most of the possession and territory but only had a Conor Gallagher shot over the bar, and an Armando Broja header wide, to show for it.
In fact, before the opening goal, a disappointing Fulham side had had the best chance.

    Chelsea edged the hard-fought derby
Cole Palmer was a constant threat down the right
A poor 47 minutes was about to end deservedly goalless when Palmer intervened.
His reverse pass to Raheem Sterling was the highest quality bit of play so far. Issa Diop’s challenge was not.
Down went Sterling and up stepped Palmer to stroke home the penalty with the calmness that is already becoming his trademark.
Sterling hit the post with a header from an Enzo Fernandez cross soon after the break but he would probably have been ruled offside anyway.
Malo Gusto sent in two fine crosses that Broja and then Sterling failed to make the most of, as Chelsea pushed for a second.
Fulham boss Marco Silva made changes but the game kept on a similar course.
Levi Colwill sent a right-footed shot over the bar with the aplomb you would expect of a left-footed defender.
The visitors finally threatened again when Andreas Pereira’s cross found Raul Jimenez, but Petrovic got down well to stop the Mexican’s shot.
Ben Chilwell’s return from injury brought one of the biggest cheers of the afternoon from the home crowd.

Newcastle have no money, no friends and next to no hope of signing anyone this January, reveals Eddie Howe

EDDIE HOWE has admitted Newcastle have no money, no friends and next to no hope of signing anyone this month. The Geordies may have the world’s richest owners in the form of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – but Financial Fair Play restrictions leave them unable to splash their billions.

Even Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke is out of reach, with boss Howe warning fans not to expect any incoming.
Newcastle are scouring the market for loans but, as Howe put it, NOBODY wants to do them any favours.
Manchester City’s England midfielder Kalvin Phillips (below) is a top target but the Treble winners want more than £7million as a loan fee — a sum Newcastle are reluctant to spend.
And yesterday midfield enforcer Joelinton was ruled out for six weeks after injuring a thigh in last Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Sunderland, adding to St James’ Park’s lengthy crock list.

On Thursday, the Tyneside club announced pre-tax losses of £73million for the 2022-23 season, leaving club chiefs scratching their heads as to where the incomings will come from.
And in a brutal reality check ahead of hosting City, Toon chief Howe said: “In an ideal world, given the freedom to act we would have brought players in already.
“But we’re not in that situation. Financial Fair Play is a problem and we’re having to navigate around that.

“We’re not shutting the door on everything but as I sit here now, no we’re not going to bring anyone in.

“Sometimes you have to take your long-term vision away and just deal with the here and now.
“I’d be quite prepared to do that if the situation arose where we could agree something that would help us now.
“The owners are very ambitious and they would like to help and improve the squad in any way they can.
“But the rules and conditions we’re working under don’t allow that.
“I will continue to push for signings but I have to respect and understand the football club’s health because we want Newcastle United here for the next 500 years.”
Chief executive officer Darren Eales admitted they may have to cash in on star players like Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to beat FFP.
The Saudis have splashed £374.6m since buying the club from hated owner Mike Ashley in October 2021 but have only recouped around £45m in sales.
So if club chiefs want to sell a prized asset without Howe’s blessing, he admits he will be powerless.
He added: “As much as I don’t think it’s a good deal, ultimately that would be taken out of my hands.
“To sign players, we may have to sell. It’s something we will do for the foreseeable future.”
Solanke is valued at around £50m after Howe paid Liverpool £19m for him in 2019 when he was Cherries boss.
The striker, 26, has bagged 12 Prem goals this season and was yesterday named as the top-flight’s Player of the Month for December.
Howe added: “I love Dominic but we don’t have the ability to sign a player of that level.”
And as for loans, Howe moaned: “I’m not sure there are many clubs out there willing to help us.
“To agree a loan deal, you need the club to agree so we’re in that moment where I’m not sure we have many friends in the market.”
Currently ninth in the table and 11 points off the top four, a huge second half to the season is needed to secure European football again — and the much-needed cash boost that brings in.
When asked if the Toon are an established top-six club yet after finishing fourth last term, Howe said: “I’ve never said we are part of that set.
“I don’t think you can suddenly put yourself in that bracket. You have to prove it year on year.
“The accounts would have given you an insight into how far we have to go to become the team that everyone wants us to be.
“There was this conception when the owners took over that we were the richest club in the world.
“Then reality is that’s not really important when talking about FFP, that’s irrelevant.
“We are where we are based on income and we have to improve those revenue streams.”
If all of that will sound gloomy to the Toon Army, 46-year-old Howe has no doubts about where he sees his future.

He added: “I hope to be here for many years. I’m also wise enough to know you can’t predict anything in football.

Group promoting Hollywood film Argylle BRUSH TEETH in Stamford Bridge crowd as Chelsea fans blast ‘circus’

CHELSEA fans slammed the “circus” at Stamford Bridge as a bizarre promotion for upcoming film ‘Argylle’ took place during the action.Earlier this week, Enzo Fernandez was pictured wearing a strange backpack at training, also to promote the film.

A group of men bizarrely promoted Argylle and were branded a ‘circus’ by Chelsea fans
But the Blues hierarchy took it a step further at Stamford Bridge against Fulham – with the group BRUSHING THEIR TEETH while the game was going on.
A group of men, sporting matching swept haircuts and green velvet jackets, were given some of the best seats in the house – directly behind the Chelsea dugout.
Then, with the action being played out on the pitch, the group stood up and posed.
They did it three times during the first 20 minutes of the game – first appearing to read a page from a book and then looking at their watches.

Three changes Chelsea must make to get more from their £220m midfield misfits Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo

MAURICIO POCHETTINO must make changes to his midfield setup to get the best out of £220million stars Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.Chelsea are sitting 10th in the Premier League and now they are facing an uphill battle to even reach the final of the Carabao Cup following their 1-0 defeat in the semi-final first leg against Middlesbrough.

But Mauricio Pochettino can get the best out of the pair with some clever adjustmentsCredit: AFP
As we enter 2024 the optimism felt by the Chelsea fanbase at the start of the season appears to have all but disappeared.
Fault for Chelsea’s poor season cannot be put down to a lack of spending as during the last summer window the board sanctioned some significant investment.
While they have been unfortunate to have only just got Christopher Nkunku into the squad following injury and with Romeo Lavia still out of action the bulk of their new signings have been available.
One of the areas that the club invested in most heavily was the midfield with Lavia joined by Lesley Ugochukwu and, most significantly, Caicedo who was signed for £115m from Brighton in the summer.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
Given that last season saw them spend £106m to bring in the Argentinian midfielder Fernandez from Benfica.
For all that investment, however, Chelsea are still struggling to find quality and consistency in the middle of the park.
Pochettino seems to have settled on a 4-2-3-1 shape with Fernandez and Moises Caicedo as the double pivot at the base of the midfield.
Despite the two having real quality and despite being a good partnership on paper, we have yet to see the Chelsea midfield really dominate a game.
    Most read in Football
How Chelsea lined up against Middlesbrough, with Fernanadez playing deeper than both Gallagher and Caicedo
The key seems to be in the way that the Argentinian coach is using his two star midfielders and small tweaks to the positioning and role of the two could actually make the difference.
In this article, we will look at these changes and make suggestions that could improve Chelsea in the middle of the park.
Understand what made Caicedo great last season
Caicedo has had something of a meteoric rise having started playing early at professional level in his native Ecuador he caught the eye of scouts across Europe quickly and Brighton were able to snap him up.
When Caicedo first arrived in Europe he went out on loan to play for Beerschot in the Belgian top-flight.
Interestingly, he struggled during this loan move and did not look ready for the Prem.
Brighton, however, saw things differently and during the 2022/23 season Caicedo established himself as one of the most impressive and interesting midfield players in the Premier League.
The key lay in the way that Brighton used Caicedo from a tactical perspective.
He became key in the way that Brighton built up from the back and he was one of the most progressive midfielders from deep areas as he dropped to receive the ball and then played forward.
Caicedo has played high up the pitch often for Chelsea
Here, as Caicedo receives the ball he checks his shoulder but there are no Chelsea players in the shaded area. Malo Gusto is slow to move forward from right-back and two advanced players are standing side by side. With no option to progress the ball Caicedo just bounces the ball back instead.
The structure for Chelsea can, at times, look untidy with players not spaced properly or grouped together in areas of the pitch.
This is, in part, due to having players who are not completely comfortable in the roles that they are being asked to play.
For the Chelsea midfield to be able to progress the ball properly they have to ensure that there are players who are in pockets of space to receive those progressive passes.
Without these line-breaking or progressive options ahead of the ball for the likes of Caicedo we are likely to see Chelsea continue to be slow and passive in their build-up phase.
With the level of attacking players that the Chelsea coaching staff have at their disposal, they are likely to benefit hugely from being more aggressive and quicker in their ball movement.
This time as Caicedo takes possession of the ball we can see that he does have an option ahead of the ball for a progressive pass, so he plays a ball through the opposition’s defensive structure and finds the teammate outside the area
Caicedo played a much deeper role against Fulham
To get more out of Caicedo the Blues need to involve him more in deeper areas to allow him to build the attack.
There is an argument that he would be better for Chelsea as a single pivot should they move to a 4-3-3 shape.
    Give Enzo more freedom
There was a degree of confusion around Fernandez when he was signing for Chelsea from Benfica.
Having just won the World Cup with Argentina it is fair to say Fernandez was a man in demand and this led to the increased fee that Chelsea ended up having to pay to get him to England.
When he first arrived there was a misconception that Fernandez was a ‘6’ whose best role was at the base of the midfield.
Instead, he is more of an ‘8’ whose creativity and ability to break lines and find teammates is more effective in more advanced areas of the pitch.
He is a player whose ability on the ball is best used in the final third.
He is not a safe or passive passer, as we can see at times from Caicedo, and instead, he will attempt more dangerous passes of the ball.
Here, we see Enzo as he has dropped back into a deeper position to receive the ball before passing to the wide player. As he plays this pass he then tries to make up ground with a longer run to get into the opposition half. Caicedo is already in the opposition half so he drops deeper.
Chelsea would get more out of their midfield by simply adjusting the positioning of the two midfielders, with Caicedo playing in deeper areas to allow Fernandez to step forward to find spaces between the lines of the opposition.
While Fernandez is a progressive passer of the ball he does not always find these passes from deeper areas as he sees the role of the deep midfielder as more of a ‘safe passer’.
In August, Enzo Fernandez was outstanding playing mostly in the opposition half against Liverpool
But in December Fernandez played much deeper and was far less effected against Man Utd
This time Fernandez has the ball in a deeper area. As he takes possession there is an option ahead of him to progress the ball, and Caicedo would play this pass. Fernandez instead chooses to play safe with a short pass to a defensive teammate.
Unlocking the ability in the final third of Fernandez should be one of the main priorities for Pochettino at Chelsea.
Getting his fellow countryman on the ball more in the final third would help Chelsea in terms of chance creation and in dominating more from central areas.
What should Chelsea look like in the midfield?
Assuming that Pochettino decides to stick with Caicedo and Fernandez in the midfield, and we think that he should, a move to a 4-3-3 shape would make more sense for them in terms of profiles.
Having Moises Caicedo as the lone ‘6’ at the base of the midfield would allow him to drop into deeper areas to receive the ball and help to build the play into the middle or final third.
Enzo Fernandez as one of the ‘8s’ would allow him to get the ball in more dangerous areas where he can find the final pass and create a threat for teammates.
The issue may be in the third midfielder although the likes of Conor Gallagher could play comfortably as more of a pressing ‘8’ alongside Fernandez.
Getting Fernandez into positions like this more often would be hugely beneficial for Chelsea. His passing ability and willingness to try to play difficult passes in advanced areas would create chances for teammates
This may feel like a small change but positionally there is a huge difference for players if they are asked to play in a double pivot or in a single pivot at the base of the midfield.
This affects their positioning and movement in the build-up phase and in a single pivot there will be more options for players in deeper areas to play into more advanced positions.
Here, we see Caicedo receive the ball from a deep teammate and then immediately play into more advanced team-mates as Chelsea were able to break through the opposition defensive block quickly
Allowing Caicedo to take more responsibility in the build-up phase will make Chelsea quicker and more streamlined as they play forward.
In football, the small details can make all the difference, especially at the highest level.
Although it is tempting to write off the ability and impact of the likes of Caicedo and Fernandez, we still believe that they will come good and develop into an effective midfield partnership for Chelsea.
    READ MORE SUN STORIES
    Conclusion
Chelsea have invested significantly in their midfield and they have profiles in that area of the pitch that should work together seamlessly.
The key for them, and for Pochettino, is to get these profiles into areas of the pitch that fit their skillset. A small tactical change is all it will take to get more out of the midfield for this Chelsea side. More
