Joelinton was initially told he could be out for six weeks but further tests have revealed the issue is more serious than first believed.
The Athletic report that the Brazilian midfielder needs an operation on his tendon.
On the injury, Eddie Howe said: “He’s a huge player for us, it’s a big blow.
“He’s got a problem with the tendon in his quad. It’s a very difficult place to get an injury, hence the timeframe.

“He’s very disappointed. We’ve had to do a job of picking Joe up.
“We’re really stretched in attacking and midfield areas, we have been for a long time and it’s inhibited our ability to rest players and change within games.”
Joelinton has played in 23 games this season, scoring three goals.
It has been a disaster week for him after his house was broken into by thieves.

Newcastle have had to deal with an injury crisis for much of this season with Nick Pope, Javier Manquillo, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Matt Target all currently sidelined.
Meanwhile, Jacob Murphy, Callum Wilson and Tino Livramento are all being assessed and are nearing comebacks.
The Toon are further stretched in midfield due to Sandro Tonali serving a ten-month betting ban.
Newcastle may look to bolster their squad in the January transfer window but financial restrictions are limiting their spending.
They have been linked with a loan deal for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.
However, the deal is reportedly off due to FFP rules. More

Chelsea ‘consider emergency Jhon Duran transfer as club chiefs hold talks about shock move for Aston Villa flop’

Mauricio Pochettino will likely call upon Armando Broja in his absence but Chelsea want to add to their attacking ranks.
Duran is one target they have in mind as a potential short-term option, according to reporter Nathan Gissing.
The Colombian has failed to start a single Premier League game for Villa this term but does have two goals in 17 substitute appearances.
He has a total of four goals for the Villans following his 2022 move from MLS side Chicago Fire.

United have monitored Araujo for some time and Erik ten Hag’s need for a new defender has been apparent for several weeks.
The Red Devils have enquired about Araujo’s availability and have been told he will cost £69million this month, reports transfer guru Florian Plettenberg.
That means United might wait until the summer to make a move for the Brazilian, who is also understood to have attracted interest from Bayern Munich.
The two clubs could battle it out later this year though Araujo is reportedly keen to stay at Barcelona.

And Henry was on hand to accept the Best Men’s Player of the Year award on behalf of his ex-Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi.
But it soon turned into the chance to aim a dig Tottenham’s way.
Henry said: “Someone is going to have to take the trophy. I actually have two reasons for taking it. I never won it, so I’ll keep it.”
Henry then turned to Chowdhury and asked: “You are a Tottenham fan right?’ To which his co-host confirmed.

My non-league heroes are one match away from dream FA Cup clash with Man Utd… my secret is a nap right before kick-off

And the National League side’s boss Richard Hill revealed how he keeps so calm… by taking a ten-minute nap just before kick-off.
Hill told SunSport: “I don’t get any nerves before a game and don’t have any jittery feelings.
“I just do what I normally do when the lads go out for a warm-up — I have a lie-down on the fitness table and see if I can get my head down for ten minutes.
“That’s what I did at Newport. I put a chair next to the kit skip, put a coat over me and I had ten minutes.”

Maybe Hill should send pre-match tips to United chief Ten Hag, who cannot afford any embarrassing slip-ups in the Cup.

Kevin De Bruyne’s genius sixth sense has Man City’s rivals saying ‘I see dread, people’.. he’s already an all-time great

ABSENCE makes the heart grow fonder, so wrote an ancient poet. And a wise old philosopher once told us that “every parting is a form of death, as every reunion is a type of heaven”.
Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne is already an all-time greatCredit: Getty
And these were blokes who never even watched football. Let alone lived through Kevin De Bruyne’s five-month lay-off with a hamstring injury.
As football lovers, how we missed Manchester City’s Belgian genius.
And how we marvelled at the majesty of his Premier League comeback at Newcastle on Saturday, when De Bruyne conjured a goal and an assist to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory during a 21-minute cameo as a sub.
The goal was all about body shape, calmness and accuracy. It was the assist for Oscar Bobb’s late winner which bore his hallmark. The KDB USP.
    Read More on Football
What sets De Bruyne apart is the 360-degree vision, the sixth sense for a pass that makes him football’s version of that weird kid in the Bruce Willis movie who gives you the absolute willies by saying, “I see dead people”.
Anyway, De Bruyne’s return made me wonder — is he so good that we now have to regard the City midfielder as the greatest footballer the Premier League has ever seen?
The Belgian’s stats are mightily impressive — 65 goals and 103 assists in 244 appearances — but he wouldn’t get that accolade on stats alone.
As with all these things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

De Bruyne’s return has Man City rivals dreading in the second half of the seasonCredit: Getty
I’m lucky enough to have seen Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the flesh on many occasions but I regard Zinedine Zidane as my favourite player.
He was the one who, even more than Messi, did things which made me disbelieve my own eyes.
And in terms of Premier League players, De Bruyne provides those “F*** me, Doris!” moments more than pretty much any other.
The City squad assembled by Pep Guardiola — which, if De Bruyne has his way, will become the first in English football history to win four straight titles — is probably the greatest ever assembled on these shores.
And yes, here’s the asterisk to acknowledge lawyers must decide the legitimacy of its funding.
But even in a squad as multi-talented and expensive as City’s, De Bruyne is still indisputably the main man.
He’s the bloke you want to watch. However ably Phil Foden deputised.
However many goals Erling Haaland scores. However crucial Rodri is at the base of midfield. Whether or not Bernardo Silva is even the most magnificent little bloke called Silva to have played for City under Pep.
Jurgen Klopp called it right last week when he said: “Kevin De Bruyne is warming up, the whole country is starting to shake.”
Klopp understands how special De Bruyne is and the fact City remained even close to his Liverpool side during the Belgian’s absence was ominous.
De Bruyne was sorely missed by Man City during his hamstring injuryCredit: Getty
It’s to the shame of my profession De Bruyne has never been voted FWA Footballer of the Year.
De Bruyne is a pleasant bloke but he has a healthy chip on his shoulder about the Press, ever since he was derided as a “Chelsea flop” when City signed him from Wolfsburg in 2015 for what turned out to be the best £55million Abu Dhabi’s royal family has ever spent.
Like Mohamed Salah, De Bruyne wasn’t rated by Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge and only became a Premier League great at the second time of asking.
Nobody who sees football as an art, rather than a science, would ever have ditched either player.
Salah and De Bruyne have both won two PFA Player of the Year awards, equalled only by Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alan Shearer and Gareth Bale during the Premier League era.
Those must all be contenders in our “Who’s the Greatest?” debate, along with a clutch of other players from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, including Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona and Paul Scholes.
Or what about Dennis Bergkamp, Harry Kane, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard or Sergio Aguero?
Personally, I rank De Bruyne at No 2 behind Henry.
But if he makes the difference in this title race by overhauling Liverpool, as even Klopp suspects he might, then De Bruyne can claim to be the Premier League’s GOAT.
    WHISTLE FOR IT
IS there a bigger load of old guff in football than demands for consistency in refereeing decisions?
There have been 25 refs in the Premier League this season.
Why should they carry out a difficult role, full of subjective calls, any more consistently than 25 different people doing any other job? This weekend, Fulham’s Tom Cairney argued that Chelsea’s Malo Gusto should have been sent off for a horrible challenge on Willian.
But he then compared it to the sending-off of Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Crystal Palace, which was rescinded on appeal.
So do we now want refs to be consistently wrong?
    REPLAY IT WITH MATES
THIS week brings what are almost certain to be the last-ever FA Cup third-round replays — with original ties to be settled on extra time and penalties from next season.
Like most changes in football, this has been met by an outcry.
But replays make Cup shocks less likely and the fixture list is so congested, for Football League as well as Premier League clubs, that something has to give.
There was similar uproar when shootouts were introduced after a single replay in 1991. Before that, men were men and Cup ties were played to a standstill.
Fulham fans reminisce about the longest-ever run to an FA Cup Final.
It took the Cottagers 11 matches — including six replays — to reach Wembley in 1975.
FA Cup third-round replays are to become a thing of the pastCredit: Getty
In 1980, Arsenal and Liverpool met four times to decide a semi and the Gunners ended up so knackered that a team chasing a treble of league title, FA Cup and Uefa Cup lost two finals and won nowt.
Still, that’s nothing on Alvechurch and Oxford City, who took SEVEN matches to settle their final qualifying round tie in 1971, before Bobby Hope scored Alvechurch’s winner in the 588th minute.
Players on either side are said to have struck up genuine friendships after spending so much time together.
    AUSSIE OPENER
ANGE POSTECOGLOU’S Tottenham are great to watch as a neutral.
While being “fearless” is such a cliched buzzword in modern football, Spurs genuinely do seem immune to fear and pressure — and it leads to some belting, wide-open games.
Maybe it’s an Aussie thing, because it brings to mind a quote from Postecoglou’s countryman, the great cricket all-rounder Keith Miller, who had fought the Luftwaffe as a flight lieutenant during the Second World War.
Asked about the ‘pressure’ of Test matches, Miller replied: “Pressure is a Messerschmitt up your a**e. Playing cricket is not.”
    TAXING TIMES, JIM?
DURING a media call at Old Trafford on Sunday, Britain’s second richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe — who is buying 25 per cent of Manchester United for £1.03billion — stated he won’t be at all of his club’s matches because of “other things”.
Other things, including his status as a tax exile in Monaco which means he can only spend 90 days per year in the UK?

Five things Man Utd must do to go from sleeping giants to Premier League dreamers as Ratcliffe prepares to take control

AS he wandered the corridors of Old Trafford, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was very careful not to betray any of his thoughts or plans for the future. He hid behind the fact his 25 per cent buy-in at Manchester United has not yet been fully ratified by the Premier League.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has agreed to buy a 25 per cent stake in the Red DevilsCredit: AFP
That is expected to happen in the next three to four weeks.
But he immediately has the final say on all aspects of the football side of the commercial monster that is this United.
You cannot help but feel he is buying himself some time to make a decision on Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.
That must leave the Dutchman feeling much like a Ralf Rangnick-esque interim.
    READ MORE MAN UTD NEWS
And we all know how that quickly disintegrated as German Rangnick called for “heart surgery” to be performed on the club.
It would appear United are still on the waiting list for that operation.
They currently sit seventh in the Premier League, eight points off fourth-placed Arsenal having played a game more.
United’s next match is a week on Sunday, away to Eastleigh or Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round.

With Prem fixtures on the road at Wolves, Aston Villa and Luton, plus home clashes with West Ham and Fulham all before the end of February, there should be every chance to impress.
United beat the toughest of those opponents — Villa — at home on Boxing Day, fighting back from 2-0 after 26 minutes to win 3-2.
That was the first game after Ratcliffe’s £1.03billion purchase of a quarter of the club was announced.
SunSport revealed Ineos billionaire Sir Jim has already spoken with jobless Graham Potter, the former Chelsea and Brighton boss.
But what really needs to happen is for Ratcliffe to come out and give Ten Hag his full backing. Now.
The pair have already met and anyone who meets 53-year-old ETH cannot help but be impressed by him.
Former chief executive Richard Arnold and director of football John Murtough certainly were when they went to Amsterdam to meet the then Ajax boss as they searched for someone to succeed caretaker Rangnick.
None of the other candidates had done the research Ten Hag had on what was wrong with United — and what needed to be done to get the club back on track. Arnold and Murtough came out of the meeting feeling like two naughty schoolboys as he laid bare United’s failings.
Ten Hag has come under pressure during his time at Old TraffordCredit: Getty
But they were also convinced he was the new headmaster who would have the control Sir Alex Ferguson had.
That is something Fergie himself has privately claimed.
The control to get rid of Cristiano Ronaldo, to exile Jadon Sancho.
The control players respect because it is clear this man is the boss.
Unfortunately, right now, nobody knows if he will still be in charge by the end of next month, never mind the end of the season.
The way he had the team playing at times last term was as good as we have seen in the last ten years — since Sir Alex retired in 2013.
He won the Carabao Cup — the club’s first silverware in six years — reached the FA Cup final and finished third in the league.
But as Ten Hag says, when it comes to United “good is not good enough”. There is no doubt that had Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw been fit this season then things would look very different.
Likewise, if Casemiro had the consistent run of games he needs to be at his best.
But the prosecution can point to the £204.7million it will cost for Antony, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana and ask: “Why?”
United played out a 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham on SundayCredit: Getty
With Onana now at the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon, we will soon find out if United will miss him.
Ten Hag knows Antony can be much better than he has shown.
And there was evidence in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham that Hojlund is starting to find his feet and that an understanding with Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes is growing.
If Rashford can get his head straight, we all know he is one of the best talents in the English game.
There are flickers of an identifiable style of slick counterattacking football beginning to form.
As Ten Hag himself made clear on Friday, the pressure and expectation at United is greater than anywhere else.
It might be this season is sacrificed as he continues to plot a path to sustained success.
Ten Hag has a contract until summer 2025 and he should get a new one now to show the club have faith in him.
It is time to back the boss, big time.
With Manchester United 13 points off the top, SunSport’s Neil Custis looks at how the sleeping giants can become title dreamers again…
    DEFENSIVE SOLIDITY
Ten Hag has struggled with injuries in defence this seasonCredit: Getty
Due to illness and injury, Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has fielded TEN different centre-back partnerships already this season.
He has also been without Luke Shaw — considered one of the best full-backs in Europe.
Centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez finally teamed up again during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
And there is no doubt that if they get an injury-free run together, things will look much better at the back.
With those three and one from Diogo Dalot or Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right, they can boast one of the Prem’s best back fours.
    FORWARD THINKING
Rasmus Hojlund is starting to hit his stride in front of goalCredit: Getty
There is evidence that an understanding is starting to build between Marcus Rashford and summer signing Rasmus Hojlund — with Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings as a No 10.
Hojlund broke his Prem duck with that emotional winner against Aston Villa on Boxing Day and it looks to have filled him with confidence.
He hit a cracking third-minute opener against Spurs on Sunday.
If the 20-year-old Dane continues to grow into his role and Rashford finds his scoring boots again, United will be a real threat up front.
Still, you feel United must go big on a top-class No 9 this summer.
    SORT OUT KEEPER HEADACHE
Andre Onana was signed to replace David de Gea in the summerCredit: Getty
There is little doubt that had David De Gea still been in goal for United they would be looking forward to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The £43.8million Andre Onana is not a good like-for-like replacement.
His so-called distribution skills are hardly those of Ederson.
Even if they were, United just cannot play out from the back with any certainty.
And it will be interesting to see if Altay Bayindir provides a viable option with Onana at the Africa Cup of Nations, otherwise the club might have to think again in the summer.
    MAKE OLD TRAFFORD A FORTRESS
The United supporters could be key to their club’s on-pitch fortunesCredit: Getty
The ground itself is crumbling and the players do when the pressure is on in front of their own fans.
Ten Hag and Co need to make this famous old ground a place opponents fear again — not those in United shirts themselves.
So far this season at ld Trafford the Red Devils have lost four league games — plus two in the Champions League — and exited the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 loss to an under-strength Newcastle.
