Fulham 0 Everton 0: Stalemate at Craven Cottage despite teams having FORTY-SIX SHOTS on goal between them

EVERTON will kick off their battle for Premier League survival today where it really matters behind closed doors of an office. The one on the pitch did not go so well last night as they slipped into the top flight relegation zone.

An appeal hearing against a ten points deduction for breaking spending rules is expected to last three days with an outcome expected next month.
In the meantime, boss Sean Dyche must try to turn things around with a team that now has only one win in nine games.
And revitalised Luton’s 4-0 thumping of Brighton means they swap places with the rejuvenated Hatters in the bottom three.
The outcome of the courtroom drama has never been more important. Neither has Dyche’s reputation as an expert man manager.

He celebrated his paper anniversary as Everton manager last night by drawing. And it wasn’t a pretty picture.
While his team was unlucky not to take the lead in the first half from a game of penalty box pinball from a free kick, it also took the reliable cat-like reactions of keeper Jordan Pickford to stop Everton from losing this match and dropping deeper into trouble.
Pickford pawed away a stunning header from Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo with 14 minutes left and his team under the cosh.
He also tipped a powerful shot from Antonee Robinson round the post in the first half.

Pickford was also on hand when a cock up between Dwight McNeil and Jarrad Braithwaite put Fulham sub Rodrigo Muniz clean through in another hair-raising moment.
Dyche is having a lot of luck at the moment – and all of it bad.
The hearing into the extraordinary ten point punishment for overspending is really what will define his first year in charge more than anything on the pitch.
At least he could have sat on his hands for the next three days with a small consolation had he had the rub of the green at Craven Cottage.
The visitors came closest to a goal in the 25th minute from Ashley Young’s low curling free kick that sparked chaos in the box.
The turf level ball was palmed clear at ground level by keeper Bernd Leno. It spun to James Tarkowski who lumped it goalwards.
The shot cannoned off Issa Diop then backspun off the top of the bar and bounced down and back towards the goal-line via the upper body of Fulham full back Antonee Robinson.
With it three quarters over the line, full back Timothy Castagne appeared to hoof the ball clear in a bizarre let off for the home side.

Fulham were denied by both Jordan Pickford and the woodworkCredit: PA
Everton winger Arnaut Danjuma then spurned a cracking chance in the 32nd minute by blasting a shot high and wide at the end of a quick counter attack.
Wastefulness was not exclusive to Dyche’s team however and Fulham striker Raul Jimenez was left cursing himself four minutes from the break when Tarkowski’s inadvertent deflection put him in the clear from close range only to slash the ball wide of the post.
Jimenez left the pitch at the break clutching his left leg and did not appear for the second half – joining midfielder Harry Wilson on the sick list at Craven Cottage.
The quality of football did not improve much after the break, although Pickford provided some highlights with his series of saves.
At the other end, Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed against the crossbar and sub striker Beto managed to head over unmarked from three yards out in injury time.
Fulham defender Timothy Castagne also headed against the woodwork.

Wolves vs Man Utd preview: Ten Hag’s side visit Molineux for tricky Premier League clash – team news, kick-off time

MANCHESTER UNITED travel to Wolves looking to extend their three-match unbeaten run – but the game could be overshadowed by Marcus Rashford’s situation. The England star was left out of the squad to face Newport in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday after partying in Belfast last week.

Rashford missed training following a 12-hour tequila bender and has been fined £650,000 by the club – two weeks wages.
Erik ten Hag addressed the matter stating it is an “internal matter” he will “deal with”.
Rashford, 26, is available but might not feature at Molineux, with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony starting instead of the forward against Newport.
United came out on top when these two sides met on the opening weekend of the season, though the Red Devils had the officials to thank after they failed to award Wolves a stoppage time penalty that would have given them to opportunity to level the match at 1-1.

Meanwhile Wolves have faced an eventful period themselves following the outbreak of fighting in the Black Country derby clash with West Brom in the FA Cup.
Gary O’Neil’s side came out on top in that encounter and will be hoping to land another blow on a big six club, having beaten Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea this season.
    Recent form
United are unbeaten in three games in 2024 but have played only one Premier League game – a 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
But the Red Devils have still struggled for consistency with just one win in their last six Premier League games.

Wolves have faired a lot better of late with O’Neil’s team beginning to find their stride.
They oversaw a difficult derby challenge with ease to extend their unbeaten run to seven games.
Wolves have won five of those matches and have not lost at home since September.
    Team News
Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Casemiro all returned for United against Newport.
But Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a doubt after missing that clash, with Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Tyrell Malacia still missing.
The biggest question mark is whether Rashford will feature, while Andre Onana is away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
For Wolves Joao Gomes is suspended while Pablo Sarabia and Hwang Hee-chan are sidelined through injury.
    Ones to watch
Alejandro Garnacho has caught the eye in recent matces and his ability to stretch the Wolves defence will likely be United’s greatest source of joy in attack.
But keeping Wolves at bay is vital and Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro will be key for the visitors.
Meanwhile the hosts’ success is down to the team being greater than the sum of its parts.
Gomes is a miss but Matheus Cunha is finding form in front of goal and proved a thorn in United’s side when the teams met at Old Trafford.
Alejandro Garnacho could be a threat with his pace and trickery
Matheus Cunha has created 22 chances this season
    SunSport prediction
Wolves’ home form speaks for itself and with plenty going on behind the scenes to distract United, they could come undone once again. 2-0 to Wolves.

Major change to Premier League rules for next season with new VAR system approved

PREMIER LEAGUE referees may be able to explain VAR decisions to fans next season in a potential major change in protocol.PGMOL chief Howard Webb is keen to improve transparency between referees and fans.
Referees will be able to explain their VAR calls inside stadiums next seasonCredit: PA
And the new initiative could help repair damaged trust in top-flight officials.
Football lawmakers Ifab have given the Prem the green light for refs to communicate their calls to those in the stadium.
It comes following a successful trial of the new procedure in Mexico and Portugal.
But the new plans would still need to be approved before being introduced by the Premier League.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Like in the Women’s World Cup and Club World Cup, the refs are expected to be mic’d up inside stadiums.
And after consulting the VAR monitor and agreeing on a decision, they will then declare the basic reasoning over the PA system to the crowd – such as identifying who committed a foul or was offside for example.
There was some criticism that the explanations at the Women’s World Cup were too basic and only copied what was displayed on the big screens.
And one nervous official sparked chaos when she declared “no goal” before quickly correcting herself: “No, wait… no offside. Goal!”

But if it comes in for the Premier League, Webb will hope the chance for refs to give a brief overview should help reduce confusion and frustration for fans watching the game live in the stadium.
However, in a blow to fans, it is understood there are no plans yet to make the full step towards rugby’s open dialogue system.

In rugby, fans watching matches live on television are able to listen in to the conversations between referees, including those on the field and in the TMO room.
This has proved incredibly popular in understanding decisions as they are made.
But while football will not be introducing this in 2024-25, there is hope that broadcasters will be able to use the audio footage after games.

Fans reckon they’ve worked out Virgil van Dijk’s next club after Liverpool star dropped THREE major clues

FOOTBALL fans believe they have worked out the club Virgil van Dijk will join if he leaves Liverpool.Speculation surrounding the Dutch defender’s future ramped up on Monday after he refused to commit to a post-Jurgen Klopp era.
Virgil van Dijk has hinted he could leave LiverpoolCredit: Reuters
Van Dijk has played all but two of Liverpool’s Premier League games this season
Following Klopp’s announcement that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season, Van Dijk, 32, was questioned as to whether he will remain at the club following the German head coach’s departure.
To which he replied: “That’s a big question. I don’t know. The club will have a big job on their hands, that is well known.
“To replace not only the manager but the whole staff and there are so many things that will change.
“I’m very curious which direction that will go in, but when that will be announced we will see our situation.”
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
And with his contract up at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, fans are now pointing to THREE reasons why Van Dijk will sign for Barcelona.
Firstly, the centre-back, who joined Liverpool for £75million in 2018, named the Nou Camp as his favourite away ground back in 2022.
Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, he said: “I would say Camp Nou, Barcelona [is my favourite away stadium].
“Obviously, for myself, watching a lot of Barcelona games when I was younger and then being able to play in it [was amazing].

“With Celtic the first time, we got beat 6-1, which was tough, but to be able to play there was a big one.
“I really enjoyed playing there. [The pitch is] massive. It’s incredible. It’s absolutely insane.”
Secondly, in the same interview, he then named Barcelona icon Ronaldinho as his footballing idol.
He added: “It’s just the way that he was, especially after the second season that he joined Barcelona.
“He was the difference-maker, you know? He was the one that everybody was looking to see, and his goals, his tricks and his flair.
“Obviously, you [Neville] played against him a couple of times, and at that point, he was the best player in the world.
“He definitely inspired me in different ways because I’m not a striker, but he influenced who I am today.”
And thirdly, Van Dijk further illustrated his love for Barcelona last month when he included Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Brazilian icon Ronaldo in his dream five-a-side team.
Van Dijk has played 246 games for Liverpool, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Club World Cup.
    Triple exit
VVD is not the only player whose future is a concern following Klopp’s announcement.
It’s understood that a bid from Saudi Arabia for Mohamed Salah is expected this summer.
The Egyptian was linked with a mega-money move to the Saudi Pro League last summer.

West Ham are pushing hard for Etienne Kinkoue but face competition
The highly-rated youngster started to turn heads in 2019 when he joined Inter Milan’s youth ranks where he made 48 appearances for the Under-19s.
The centre-back’s impressive displays at Inter saw him training with the first team, which was under ex-Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte at he time.
The Frenchman, though, never played for the senior side and was sold to Olympiacos in 2021.
The ex-France Under-17 international played for the Greek giants’ B team where he registered one assist in 23 appearances.

Liverpool lead the Premier League by five points and Chelsea are down in ninth, but their recent head-to-head record paints a different picture.
Each of the last seven meetings between the two sides has ended in a draw at the end of 90 minutes.
Four of those matches ended goalless, with Alex Disasi cancelling out Luis Diaz’s strike when these sides met at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the season.
However Chelsea have won just once at Anfield in the Premier League since 2014, and the Reds are unbeaten at home in the league since losing to Leeds in October 2022.

Liverpool could also welcome back some familiar faces to the starting line-up for what should be a raucous atmosphere in Klopp’s first league game since announcing he will step down at the end of the season.
    Recent form
Liverpool are unbeaten in ten games with wins over Arsenal, Newcastle and Fulham in that period.
They have lost just once in the league this season and are scoring goals for fun despite the absence of Mo Salah.
Liverpool have scored three or more goals in 12 home games this year, while Chelsea have struggled on the road in recent weeks.

On their last visit to Merseyside in at the beginning of December they were comfortably beaten by Everton, with Middlesbrough and Wolves also winning home games against the Blues this year.
However they did win their last Prem away match at Luton and are on the back of two successive victories against Fulham and Middlesbrough.
    Team news
Andy Robertson returned to action against Norwich – his first game since the beginning of October.
Trent Alexander-Arnold also featured following an injury lay-off and Alexis Mac Allister may be back in contention after sitting out the Norwich clash as a precaution.
Salah’s Egypt were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday but the winger picked up an injury at the tournament so is unavailable, while Wataru Endo is still away on international duty with Japan at the Asian Cup.
Meanwhile Christopher Nkunku and Malo Gusto are back in full training and should be fit enough to make the matchday squad.
Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka could also feature following recent injury lay-offs.
Levi Colwill, Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Welsey Fofana, Romeo Lavia, Reece James, Robert Sanchez and Lesley Ugochukwu are all long-term absentees.
    Ones to watch
Darwin Nunez has more than made up for Salah’s absence with three goals in his last three games.
The striker is always a handful for the opposition even when he is not finding the target, having created 22 chances in 20 games this season.
But Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has arguably been even better this campaign with nine goals in 18 Premier League games.
He eclipses Nunez with 28 chances created in fewer games and if Chelsea get anything from this match Palmer will likely be responsible.
Darwin Nunez has deputised well for Mo Salah
Cole Palmer has been Chelsea’s biggest attacking threat this season
    What have the managers said?
Klopp praised Chelsea’s football and revealed he expects them to move up the Premier League table in the next few weeks.
He said: “They play really good stuff, really good team. Nobody was ever in doubt about that. A team in form, I think. Won majority of games recently.
“We played them in first matchday, we weren’t great but they were pretty good. A point was alright. We have to do better but we are different now.
“They had a lot of injuries but now they have a core group together. They have the midfield they want together, the entire back-line other than Reece James. A really good team, even if you can’t see it in the table yet. I expect them to make big steps, but start after our game.”
While Mauricio Pochettino discussed Klopp and Chelsea’s lack of a prolific striker.
He said: “It’s a coach and person I am going to miss. I love to watch him on the touchline and the team he manages. I hope he will only be away a few months, maybe one year, and then will come back.
“I don’t know what the people are thinking but for us we want to win. I want to win.
“It’s true that in our performances, compared to those at the top, maybe we miss this type of player [striker] to make a difference. We need to build our victory in different ways because we want to be clinical and win games.”
    SunSport prediction
Liverpool do not look like losing, particularly at home, and the returns of Robertson and Alexander-Arnold should inspire them to victory. 2-1.
