Premier League prize money revealed as relegated clubs earned MORE last season than Leicester did for winning title

BOTTOM-PLACED Southampton earned more in Premier League prize money last season than the title-winning 2015-16 Leicester City side. The Saints were meekly relegated on just 25 points.

Despite their woeful season, they pocketed £103.6million in prize money.
This was the smallest tally in the Prem last term, with 19th-placed Leeds grabbing £111.7m.
These figures are far smaller than the teams at the top of the league, with Manchester City earning £176.2m and Arsenal £172.2m.
Due to a remarkable growth in the prize pot, however, Saints’ £103m sum was more than Leicester earned for winning the league seven-and-a-half years ago.

Claudio Ranieri’s miracle boys were given £93.3m in prize money after claiming the title.
This wasn’t even the highest sum of that season, with runners-up Arsenal receiving £101m.
The Gunners received more because they were televised more than the Foxes.
There were similar cases last season, with eighth-place Tottenham earning more than Brighton and Aston Villa ahead of them for the same reason.

    Spurs were paid £151.9m, compared to Brighton’s £149.7m and Villa’s £148.3m.
Chelsea also received more in 12th (£137.7m) than 11th-placed Crystal Palace (£133.3m).
Everton pocketed £120.5m after finishing 17th, more than Bournemouth got in 15th (£117.5) and Nottingham Forest in 16th (£118.6m).
West Ham, meanwhile, earned more in 14th (£129m) than Wolves in 13th (£124.6m).
Manchester United pocketed £168.3m for finishing third, with Newcastle grabbing £164.3m in fourth.
Liverpool were marginally behind the Toon both in the table and in prize money, earning £162.9m.
The Premier League flogged TV rights for between 2022 and 2025 for a staggering £10,05bn.
This new deal saw the prize money for the champions rise by £23m.
According to The Athletic, each place further up the table is now worth an additional £3.1m to clubs.

Combined Arsenal and Liverpool XI ahead of fierce Premier League title clash – but how many Gunners stars make it?

THE EMIRATES plays host to a Premier League blockbuster title clash on Sunday.Arsenal welcome Liverpool to North London hoping to cut the gap at the top to just two points.
Mikel Arteta hosts Jurgen Klopp on Sunday
Both sides have found form after the winter break, and have also welcomed back key men from injury in time for the season-defining bout.
Here, SunSport looks at who would make a combined starting XI from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool with everyone fit and available, based on current form.
    GOALKEEPER – ALISSON
The Brazilian is one of, if not the best keeper in world football right now. Any team in Europe can only dream of having someone as consistent or efficient in their goal.
His seven clean sheets have helped Liverpool top the Prem pile and lose just once all season.

Yes, David Raya is a better footballing keeper, but Alisson does exactly what you buy a keeper to do – make saves and dominate the air.
    LEFT-BACK – OLEKSANDR ZINCHENKO
Liverpool have struggled for consistency with this position this campaign with Andy Robertson out injured and Joe Gomez stepping in and performing admirably.
Regardless, Oleksandr Zinchenko – for all the doubts over his defensive attributes – simply makes any team he plays in better, and Arsenal is no exception.
Inverted so much that he is basically a midfielder, he compliments the Gunners in possession and often starts attacks with his incisive passing.

CENTRE-BACKS – WILLIAM SALIBA AND VIRGIL VAN DIJK
A tough call, this one. Both duos of William Saliba and Gabriel in the North London corner and Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in the Merseyside corner have been impressive.
However, Saliba and Van Dijk are in a class of their own. Master and apprentice. Big, powerful, quick and never look flustered.
It will be interesting to see if they decide to mark each other from set-pieces come the weekend. Do not ask me to predict who comes out on top in the air on that one.

    RIGHT-BACK – TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD
Ben White has not been his usual self recently. You can put that down to carrying an injury for the past few weeks, or starting the season at centre-back.
The Englishman is getting back up to speed, but until that happens you cannot look past Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the enigma that is where he actually looks best.
Northern Irish wonderkid Conor Bradley has kept him out the starting XI in the last few games and has been a sensation, but no one can do what Trent does on the ball, wherever that is on the pitch: Right-back, right wing, midfield – who cares? Just watch and enjoy.
Arsenal star Declan Rice makes a three-man midfieldCredit: Sunday Times
MIDFIELD – DECLAN RICE, MARTIN ODEGAARD AND DOMINIK SZOBOSZLAI
There is an argument that Arsenal would not be in this title race by the skin of their teeth had it not been for Declan Rice thanks to his two injury-time winners against Manchester United and Luton Town already this season.
That £105million price tag appears too little week by week. He is a phenomenal player who covers grass and reads the game superbly. Arsenal are lucky to have him right now.
Martin Odegaard is majestic on the ball and can control a game with his big toe alone. The Norwegian has not been at his best this year but shown glimpses of getting back there.
Thomas Partey should be back in the Arsenal squad after a spell out with a thigh injury. Maybe he would sneak in to make it a Gunners full house had he played more games this year.
It is also harsh to leave out the likes of Harvey Elliott and Alexis Mac Allister, yet Dominik Szoboszlai has something about him that you cannot help but love, whether it is his long-range belters or the way he has adapted so quickly to life in the Prem.
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah is a doubt ahead of the match with Arsenal
    RIGHT WING – MOHAMED SALAH
Leaving out Bukayo Saka feels like a crime given his ability and general likeability, but the Three Lions star has been pretty tame off the right so far this campaign.
We could just cheat and put Mohamed Salah on the left to accommodate for Saka, but that would not be in the spirit of the game.
Salah has been magnificent yet again with 14 goals and eight assists in the league. He is a major doubt on Sunday after coming home early from the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt, but he is the first name on this imaginary team sheet.
Darwin Nunez leads the attack as part of the combined XI
    LEFT WING – LUIS DIAZ
The Gabriel Martinelli of last season would hop right into this spot, no questions asked. The Martinelli of this season is way behind on what is now expected of him.
Two goals in the dying moments of a 5-0 win over Crystal Palace last month has not done enough to convince fans he is back to his best.
In comes Luiz Diaz then, a player who has been through the wringer on and off the field in recent times with injury and the kidnapping of his father in Colombia.
Through all of that, Diaz has four goals and two assists, but creates so much more with his pace and destruction with ball at feet.
Arsenal and Liverpool face off on Sunday at the Emirates
    STRIKER – DARWIN NUNEZ
The choices for this spot are between Gabriel Jesus, who doesn’t shoot at goal enough, and Darwin Nunez, someone who probably shoots too much… and hits the woodwork too often.
    READ MORE SUN STORIES
Nunez edges it, just. The chaos the Uruguayan brings to any game of football is mesmerising to watch at times, and now the goals are beginning to flow – two in his last two in the Prem.
Jesus is brilliant at lots of things – linking up play, holding the ball up, those one-twos on the edge of the box – just not scoring a reliable amount to drive you to the league title. More

I played under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea – he went crazy at club legend and left dressing room stunned

JOSE MOURINHO once left the Chelsea dressing room stunned following a rant at Ricardo Carvalho. The Portuguese upheld high standards during his first stint at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007.

In his first season in charge his side conceded just 15 goals across the entire campaign, which remains a Premier League record.
If standards ever slipped, Mourinho would not hold back in his criticism.
Recalling one such occasion, former Blue William Gallas told Genting Casino of his old boss: “He was a winner. He loved his players and was happy to manage us.
“When he shouted at these players, he showed everyone in the squad that we were on the same level. Status didn’t mean anything to Jose.

“I can remember one occasion where he went after Carvalho after we drew with Middlesbrough. We were doing the video analysis, and he went crazy at Carvalho.
“I was sat next to Geremi and we were looking at each other and thought ‘wow!’.”
Mourinho, 61, was recently sacked by Roma with his side sitting ninth in Serie A.
His exit from the Eternal City followed sackings at Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham.

Gallas, however, still thinks that his former boss has another special run to come.
The 46-year-old added: “I think Jose has got something special in him. I think he can have one more big moment as a manager; one more last dance.
“I do think it all depends on the players he is working with. Jose needs players who are warriors.
“He needs the type of player that will fight for him but are also big enough to accept criticism from a manager.
“I’ve spoken about this before, but the new generation of footballers are completely different to the generation Jose managed so successfully at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
“A lot of these players do not accept criticism. They don’t understand how hard you have to work for one year to achieve something as a player.
“If you want to lift a trophy at the end of the season, you need to give everything. You need to have the mentality of a warrior. You never give up. You fight.
“You accept that you will suffer for twelve months. I don’t think the new generation are ready to make these sacrifices.
“For Jose’s last dance, he has to be at a club with players that are ready to work with the intensity that he does.”
Mourinho was recently linked with the vacancy at Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab.

He snubbed the offer, however, as he is believed to be waiting for the right opportunity in Europe.
And he has even been linked with a sensational return to Man Utd.

Pictures emerged afterwards of the Englishman limping past the dugouts using crutches with his right foot in a protective boot.
And it could prove to be another major problem for Eddie Howe if £45million attacker Gordon is sidelined with a serious issue.
Howe said: “It looked like he twisted his ankle.
“I wasn’t sure on the incident, I didn’t see what happened.

“But he was in a lot of pain at half-time and had to come off.”
Howe was then asked how bad the injury looks to be.
The Magpies chief replied: “No idea.
“It was sore enough for him to come off, that was his decision, he knew he couldn’t continue.

“So obviously we hope it’s not bad, he’s such an important player for us and we missed him when he went off.”
Newcastle’s squad is already decimated with absentees.
Joelinton looks set to miss the rest of the season while Nick Pope is unavailable after dislocating his shoulder.
Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock and Jamaal Lascelles are also injured while Sandro Tonali remains banned.
And to make matters worse, star striker Alexander Isak missed the clash with the Hatters.
Howe added: “Isak has got a slight groin injury, we don’t think it’s too serious.
“We don’t yet know when he’ll be back.”
In more positive news, though, Harvey Barnes made a goalscoring return after four months on the sidelines.
The ex-Leicester wide man replaced Miguel Almiron just after the hour mark and ten minutes later grabbed the eighth goal of a bonkers Premier League clash.
