I was a Premier League referee who handled Keane and Terry – blue cards are NONSENSE, we are over-complicating football

THE idea to introduce blue cards into football is nonsense.Trials in amateur and youth games in both England and Wales saw referees have the power to send players off the pitch for 10 minutes for dissent or denying a promising attack.
Mark Halsey does not want blue cards introduced into the gameCredit: Rex
Halsey dealt with hard men such as former Manchester United captain Roy KeaneCredit: Alamy
But I’d like to know what the full protocol will be because I have major doubts.
Firstly, I don’t see a difference between a current yellow card and this new blue card?
Yellow cards are already used as a warning to players that if they persist with misconduct then further punishment will follow. So what’s the difference?
We don’t need blue cards if officials manage the game properly in itscurrent form.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
I never showed many yellow cards for dissent throughout my careerbecause one of the main jobs of a referee is to have control and man-manage the players on the pitch.
And I had to manage the likes of Craig Bellamy, Roy Keane, AlanShearer, John Terry, Danny Murphy, Gary Neville and Steven Gerrard, who were all big personalities and not afraid to tell me what theythought of my decisions!
By bringing in a blue card is effectively telling officials they have lost the art of managing players.
Rather than show a yellow or what could be a blue card I would speakand build relationships to avoid further sanction and maintain fairplay.

Another point on this is tactical or cynical fouls are not worded in the laws of the game so why are we changing our game for something so trivial?

Paul Merson fears ‘the game will be killed’ as football prepares for huge rule change

Imagine watching a game with nine players against seven – it wouldmake the game farcical.

We are over-complicating football and only going to confuse more people.

Newcastle join European giants ‘in race for Arsenal’s next Bukayo Saka on free transfer’ if Gunners contract talks fail

NEWCASTLE have expressed an interest in signing Arsenal youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry, according to reports. The 18-year-old, who is yet to make his senior debut, is widely considered the “jewel” of Arsenal’s academy.

In 13 appearances for the club’s Under-21s so far this season, Cozier-Duberry has scored seven goals and provided two assists.
The Gunners are now attempting to tie him down to a new deal, with talks ongoing.
But according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are among the clubs ready to pounce if negotiations fall through.
Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Anderlecht and Wolves have also shown an interest.

Cozier-Duberry’s current contract expires in June, so he could become available for a free transfer if he does not agree fresh terms with the Gunners.
The winger was spotted in first team training this week ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with West Ham.
Mikel Arteta allegedly fast-tracked him into the senior squad in preparation for the match, meaning he could be in line to make his debut.
Arsenal youth team coach Jack Wilshere has previously likened him to Bukayo Saka.

Neal Maupay’s tactic of winding up rivals isn’t working… Brentford star is lucky Roy Keane and Vieira retired long ago

IN SOME ways Neal Maupay is to be admired. It’s one thing to poke fun at big, bad James Maddison’s goal celebration to get a rise out of Tottenham.
Neal Maupay has rattled several opponents recently including Kyle WalkerCredit: Reuters
A fuming Walker could only file his complaint with referee Jarred GillettCredit: Getty
But it’s quite another having a sly pop at Kyle Walker, a walking wardrobe with enough testosterone to fill five Olympic swimming pools — if his tangled love life is anything to go by.
Yet Brentford’s occasional striker and prolific wind-up merchant is choosing to add the dark art of sledging to his other job of scoring goals once in a blue moon.
Apart from the fact it clearly isn’t working — as Brentford lost both games in which the slippery-tongued forward has tried slating the opposition — Maupay is obviously a clever man.
You don’t need to be an expert lip reader to decipher Walker’s claims that Maupay tried pricking the Manchester City full-back with digs about his kids.

The Frenchman is lucky he was only threatened with being “knocked out”.
But with so many cameras at every single Premier League game now, the day of the genuine football hardman has long since passed.
Most of us know what Walker would really like to have done there and then with Brentford’s little stirrer. Instead, he was forced to complain to referee Jarred Gillett and take the moral high ground.
Walker would have been a shoo-in for PFA Player of the Year had he waited until no one was looking, then dished out some old-fashioned retribution to put Maupay back in his box.

Perhaps a slightly late and robust tackle landed somewhere particularly painful to give Brentford’s agent provocateur pause for thought.
Be in no doubt, there are some players from the recent and quite distant past who wouldn’t have stopped to think about the repercussions before dealing with Maupay.
Arsenal’s spiky midfielder Patrick Vieira would have found a way to “resolve” the situation with his fellow countryman. Roy Keane’s answer makes you wince just thinking about it.
Duncan Ferguson, Graeme Souness, Vinnie Jones, Graham Roberts,
Dave Mackay, Ron Harris — street-fighting men who got physical first and asked questions after.
Maupay should count his lucky stars Kevin Muscat has retired and won’t be in the Wolves team awaiting Brentford at Molineux tomorrow.
Aussie Muscat was once dubbed “the most hated man in football” for a particularly ferocious challenge during a match against Wolves’ regional rivals Birmingham. He was even considered too aggressive by Millwall.
Nobody should want reckless violence and there’s no need to bring in New York vigilantes the Guardian Angels.
But there used to be a certain reassurance that annoying characters like Maupay would eventually get their comeuppance.
So far it has been left to teenage Tottenham rookie Jamie Donley to give a bit back.
The 19-year-old managed to land a hefty tackle on Maupay during his 60 seconds as a late substitute when Spurs came from behind to beat Brentford 3-2 last week — raising a cheer from the home fans.
Maupay will carry on using his verbal elbows for as long as he can get away with it, even though it’s not a hugely successful policy.
Interestingly, Brentford play City again in just 11 days’ time and Walker will be waiting.
    Roy just a realist
Poor old Roy Hodgson getting it in the neck over Crystal Palace’s travails.
Down at Selhurst Park the blame game is definitely a priority over the beautiful one, which begs the question… just what do the fans expect?
Hodgson has been criticised for lamentable results when, in truth, what he says about the club is spot on — but punters don’t want to hear it.
Since returning to the Premier League in 2013, Palace have never finished higher than tenth or lower than 15th. They have never finished with more than 49 points or fewer than 41 — a spread of just eight points.
One end of Selhurst Park is a supermarket.
Not so much the real deal as a meal deal.
It is a sad fact of life that, for the vast majority of clubs, life in the top flight is about existence.
There probably is a genuine gripe with chairman Steve Parish, who has not taken the club on like he vowed but that will require serious investment and time. Sacking Hodgson isn’t going to change that.

IF you still need to be convinced a European Super League would be treacherous, shark-infested waters, then let Barcelona president Joan Laporta put your mind at rest.
While flogging his dead-horse idea that the biggest European teams should split from Uefa and form a breakaway division, the Nou Camp’s top man unwittingly revealed his priorities.
He reportedly said: “We have Barca, Madrid, Inter, Milan, Napoli, Roma, Marseille, Sporting Lisbon, three Dutch clubs . . .”
Three Dutch clubs? That will be Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, who between them have been European champions six times — six more than Roma, Napoli and Sporting Lisbon, whose names he could remember.
    Enz well for Poch
Last Friday, despairing Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino lamented his team lacked a ‘specialist set-piece expert’.
He went on to say he and his eagle-eyed team of coaches had been discussing the issue only that day and banging their heads together, wondering about signing a good free-kick taker this summer.
But where to find one? If only there was someone who could deliver an armour-piercing shot from outside the box over a defensive wall and into the opposition net?
One world-class 25-yard corker at Aston Villa later and it appears the answer has been right under Pochettino’s nose in the shape of his £106million World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez.

There’s been a lot of talk about celebrations on the football pitch.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was criticised for taking photos after last weekend’s win over Liverpool.
But when it’s not about celebrating, it’s about not celebrating — a much bigger concern to anyone hoping to keep football in perspective.
Richarlison’s moody stroll around the penalty box after scoring against his old club Everton on Saturday was just one example of deliberate underplay.
Would Everton fans really care if Richarlison had pumped his fist in delight or Samba danced across the 18-yard box? Selling the Brazilian forward to Spurs after four years and 100-odd games was not like losing Dixie Dean or when Harry Kane left Tottenham.
The reason some players play down goals is not because of regard for their former club, it is through sheer self-importance.
In celebrating, they are making a point that their departure was so significant that it would be wrong to rub salt into the wounds of a club left in despair by their exit.

Alexander-Arnold and Salah have less than 18 months left on their   contracts.
And former Kop defender Johnson is concerned that if Klopp’s successor does not hit the ground running, then the nightmare scenario of a big-name exodus will follow.
Defender TAA and superstar forward Salah would be able to talk to foreign clubs next January if they do not agree new deals.
Johnson, who made 200 appearances in all competitions for the club between 2009 and 2015, said: “Let’s be real, who’s not going to take Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mo Salah on the cheap?

“I don’t believe we’ll see a big exodus at Liverpool this summer if the contract situations don’t get sorted now — which they won’t do because the players are going to want to know what’s going on.
“If they have a bad start to next  season, then a year from now we will be discussing about them having six months left on their contracts. If that happens, Liverpool will be in trouble because Trent and Mo can attract interest from any club they want.
“They don’t have to take a risk and, if Liverpool have a bad season following Jurgen’s departure, then we could potentially see an exodus.”
Klopp’s shock announcement that he will depart Anfield after nine years at the helm could also have a huge impact on Liverpool’s recruitment plans during the close season.

Anfield legend Xabi Alonso is red-hot favourite to take over, and former England right-back Johnson said: “It would certainly be a good choice.
“He’s doing a fantastic job at Bayer Leverkusen and he has got the minerals for it. But the right choice is something that nobody knows right now.
“Whichever manager comes next is going to be in for a super-hard job and they’re going to need time. Any manager that goes in next is essentially putting their head in a guillotine.
“Being a legend of the club and a fans’ favourite will mean that Xabi’s given time — which doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s going to be successful.
“But the fans will have more patience with him and give him more leeway than they would with a manager that doesn’t already have an affiliation with the club.”

I helped Alex Ferguson win Man Utd’s first title at Old Trafford but it makes sense for club to leave Theatre of Dreams

In recent years he and other supporters have had to watch United’s steady post-Fergie decline.
Old Trafford’s deterioration has contributed towards the club’s malaise, with United’s historic home now featuring a leaky roof and rusted metal.
Having sealed his 25 per cent partial takeover of the Red Devils, Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to upgrade the Theatre of Dreams by building a new £2bn 90,000-seater “Wembley of the North”.
Ratcliffe’s plan includes lobbying the Government for funding as part of their “Levelling up” pledges – although this has caused a backlash from furious tax-payers.

An alternative route could see United look to upgrade their current South Stand, at an estimated cost of £800million.
But Pallister reckons that they should give a move serious consideration.
Speaking to the Mail, he said: “I hate to say it because I never thought I’d see the day when I would say, ‘Leave Old Trafford’, but the idea of putting a purpose-built, state-of-the-art stadium next door is appealing.
“As fantastic a stadium as it is — and it’s not as bad as some people have made out — to make it the Wembley of the North might be the way forward.

“It could cost £2billion to build, which is mind-blowing. But as a player and supporter, to go into a brand-new stadium like Tottenham have got, maybe that’s the step we have to take if we want to keep our place at the top table and be spoken about as one of the elite of world football.
“The traditionalists want to stay and I get that. It’s understandable that people talk about the history, but we moved away from the Cliff which was synonymous with the Busby Babes and Law, Best and Charlton.
Manchester United’s fall from glory since Sir Alex Ferguson
“You can’t stay in one place for ever. You have to move into the present day at some stage, it’s just a matter of which way you do it.
“Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to be seen to be getting things back on track, and building a 90,000-seat stadium would be a huge statement.”
SunSport understands that Ratcliffe’s ambitious £2bn “Wembley of the North” plan is unlikely to get the green light.
In order to attract Government funding, club chiefs would have to make a convincing case that the project would represent far more than just a new stadium for Man Utd.
They would have to pitch a “very attractive regeneration project” to even gather consideration. More

Roy Hodgson confirms Michael Olise has another ‘serious’ injury in ‘devastating’ blow to Crystal Palace star

He has been in stunning form since returning, scoring six goals and laying on a further three assists in 11 Premier League appearances.
The winger was particularly brilliant during the recent 3-2 win over Sheffield United, but tweaked his hamstring during the match.
He was subsequently benched for the trip to Brighton last weekend, with Hodgson bringing him on at half-time with his side 3-0 down.
Just 11 minutes after coming on Olise was forced to go off after suffering another hamstring injury.

According to the Mail, the French youth international faces a minimum of two months out.
Asked about Olise’s injury this afternoon, as well as the statuses of Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi, Hodgson said: “We’ve lost all three of them, there’s no question of that.
“It’s a massive blow, particularly after the Sheffield United game when we were really thinking ‘we’re going to be okay now, we’ve got these guys back’.
“But just the opposite has occurred and furthermore, Michael’s picked up another serious injury, which is absolutely devastating for him, for the club, for everybody really.”

Asked if he could understand fans’ frustrations at Olise having come on at 3-0 down against Brighton “with the game already gone”, Hodgson, 76, replied: “Well that’s hindsight.
“And secondly it’s suggesting he’s carrying an injury. I don’t think he was carrying an injury, I think it was more fatigue that we had to concern ourselves with.
Top 10 highest paid footballers in the world revealed with no Premier League players making the top five
“As a result when a player is suffering from a little bit of fatigue, and he’d been out a long time before he played 60-odd minutes against Sheffield United, everyone was urging caution.
“I’ve got to say the medical people, I hear that they’ve been taking some criticism, when that’s grossly unfair.
“They’ve done remarkably well getting him back into any condition to play, really.
“It boils down more to the fact that when there was a chance that he could be available, basically everyone got together and decided perhaps he can be available.
“But we need to start him on the bench, maybe only bring him on in the second half, that’s where we all were.
    ‘We strode blindly ahead’
“Then I suppose we strode blindly ahead, but it’s not easy when you’ve got a player like Olise on the bench to turn around and say ‘by the way you just sit there and watch the game because we don’t need you’.
“That’s not quite so easy, and there was no indication from us that he was happy to do that, but of course Michael’s a quiet guy so that’s the other unfortunate part of this whole equation.
“Another player might have come and said ‘I don’t think it’s worth it, I don’t think I need to go on, I’d rather have a bit more time’ – but we can’t expect that of him.
“That’s not fair to expect that of him, he’s just going along with what he thinks the whole of the club thinks so it was the perfect storm in every respect.”

Rashford was then fined £650,000 and dropped for the 4-2 FA Cup win at Newport last month after claiming he was too ill to train following a night out in Belfast.
Ten Hag, 54, has since said that Rashford has “taken responsibility” and that the matter is now “closed”.

It is wide open at both the top and bottom of the table, with just two points separating the top three and three points separating 15th from 18th.
But Betfred have attempted to cut through the uncertainties by working out what they believe will be the final table.
They have taken the average points amassed by clubs across their last 10 run-ins – with Luton’s based on the average of the lowest three teams – to decipher what the table will look like come May.
It will be no surprise to fans that Manchester City are predicted to win the league for a fifth time in six seasons, beating current table toppers Liverpool by just two points.
