Incredible timelapse video shows Premier League clubs’ £27.5BN player sales since 1993 with Chelsea biggest selling club

AN incredible timelapse video shows which English teams have made the most money through selling players since the Premier League’s inception. And the results in recent years are perhaps the most surprising.
Chelsea top the charts for spending in recent years, with Todd Boehly going through a high turnover of playersCredit: Reuters

As well as selling Abramovich-era players to rivalsCredit: AFP
The graph showing player sales was generated by football finance expert Kieran Maguire, and posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Chelsea have topped the charts for most money made through player sales since 2016, and have only extended their “lead” at the top since Todd Boehly took over the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
That’s seen Boehly put his own stamp on the side by spending £1billion in transfer fees during his year-and-a-half in charge so far but also led to a culling of players from the previous regime.
Mason Mount was sold for £60million to Manchester United and Kai Havertz sold to London rivals Arsenal for £65m as Boehly brought in the likes of Moises Caicedo for a British record £115m.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
The Blues also shot up the chart in 2019 when they sold Eden Hazard for £130m to Real Madrid – despite him only having a year remaining on his contract.
Chelsea have generated over £1.4bn in player sales which dwarfs the second highest sellers Liverpool, who have made £915.6m from selling players.
Liverpool were handed a huge bump in their player sales in 2018 with the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £105m, the then second most expensive transfer of all time.
It allowed the Reds to reinvest and build a dynasty for Jurgen Klopp which has them sitting top of the table today, with the bulk of the Coutinho money being used to sign Virgil van Dijk.

Another team that have consistently generated income through player sales down the years are Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger admitted that top stars would have to be sold to help finance the Emirates Stadium, which was built in 2006, and this led to a period of lean years where the club lost the likes of Ashley Cole, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, and Samir Nasri to either Premier League or Champions League rivals.
The club topped the list for money generated through player sales in 2008, having sold £184.8m worth of players.
Interestingly though, Arsenal have dropped to fifth in player sales in recent years, suggesting not only is their Emirates move now paid off and generating income, but the club have stopped selling their biggest players.
The Gunners spent big on the likes of Declan Rice and David Raya this summer, which left them limited in January due to FFP regulations – suggesting that selling good players to generate revenue is no longer part of the plan.
They now sit fifth on the list with £779.4m in player sales.
Their North London rivals Spurs featured consistently since 1993 as being one of the club’s that have made the most money through selling players.

Spurs’ sale of Gareth Bale among other superstars sees them rank highly on the listCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
The club topped the chart at the beginning of the graph and have largely stayed in the top six of selling clubs since then.
The club’s MO until recently was to develop players and sell them for big profits with players like Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale all examples of that.
Harry Kane aside, that seems to have changed in recent years, with Spurs still signing young players with high potential, but now fighting tooth and nail to keep them at the club.
They now sit fourth in the table on £896.4m, being overtaken by Manchester City – indicating a change in approach from Spurs.
City shot up on the table from 14th when Sheikh Mansour took over the club in 2008 with £55.3m in player sales to third in 2024 with £880m revenue generated.
The club have never sold a star during the Sheikh’s reign so their appearance near the top is a little surprising – but their ranking on the list is largely down to selling academy products.
The financial capital invested in the academy by the club’s UAE owners means City’s academy products pop up all over world football, Pedro Porro’s £42m transfer to Spurs last year saw City benefit from a sell-on clause for example.

The club have also done well in selling the likes of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen, who looks set for a mega money transfer at the end of the season – and the £42.5m sale of Cole Palmer to Chelsea also benefitting the club’s bottom line.
The sales have aided their ability to splash the cash within the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules and sign the likes of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £100m – but the club remain under investigation by the Premier League for their spending.

Players who swapped football for fighting, including Wayne Bridge, as Wayne Rooney is ‘offered’ Misfits Boxing switch

FOOTBALLERS are always encouraged to think about what career path they will take when they hang up their boots. Some choose to go into coaching, others invest in property… and some decide to knock lumps out of one another.

Wayne Rooney is considering a shock career change, and is in talks to star in Misfits Boxing.
According to the Mirror, the 38-year-old has held talks with the promoter of KSI’s influencer boxing series, Kalle Sauerland.
While former Leicester defender Marcin Wasilewski was one ex-pro tipped to swap shin pads for mouth guards.
The Pole, now 43, retired from football in November 2020 and was expected to enter the world of cage fighting.

A bout with ex-Bolton and Hearts defender Blazej Augustyn was even suggested, however he is yet to fight.
Here, SunSport details the fighting careers of five other footballers who have turned to the ring.
    Rio Ferdinand
England legend Ferdinand’s football career brought several glittering moments but his boxing days were over before they really started.
Sponsored by a betting company to step into the ring in September 2017, the former defender was jarringly denied a licence.

The British Boxing Board of Control deemed it ‘not beneficial’ to allow Ferdinand his second career.

And the Manchester United hero quickly called time on his boxing comeback.
He said: “It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves.
“To not be given the chance to demonstrate my ability to the BBBofC through the standard assessment afforded to others is hard to take.”
That didn’t stop Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn revealing his desire to stage an Old Trafford showdown between Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.

    Katie Taylor
Arguably the world’s top female boxer, Taylor is also a former Republic of Ireland international footballer.
The ex-winger starred for Peamount United in the late 2000s yet missed her side’s FAI Women’s Cup final in 2009 to be crowned Europe’s best amateur fighter.
Taylor won 11 caps for her country, scoring twice, before choosing to focus on boxing a decade ago.
Former team-mate Marie Curtin would later tell the Mirror that Taylor ‘would have excelled to the highest level’ had she stayed in football.
Curtin added: “There were no barriers. Her mindset is so strong and you need leaders like that on your team to win.”
And Taylor fondly remembers her playing days, even recalling a crunching tackle that was posted on Twitter a couple of years ago.

    Wayne Bridge
Hardly the most aggressive left-back of his day, ex-Chelsea man Bridge showed the fire in his belly with a stint in boxing two years ago.
A Sport Relief clash with Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews saw the defender take on a man nine years his junior.
The three-round affair started tightly before Bridge unleashed a barrage of blows.
Matthews hit the deck twice and yet made it to the final bell, at which Bridge won on points.
The former England international, who has also appeared on I’m A Celeb, retired from football aged 33 in 2014.
His boxing career ended with that one charity fight and he is now said to refer to himself as a ‘stay-at-home dad’ for the two kids he shares with wife Frankie.

    Leon McKenzie
A star forward for the likes of Norwich, Peterborough and Coventry on the pitch, McKenzie would later forge a decent super-middleweight career.
Having hung up his boots in January 2013, he pulled on the gloves just six months later.
A debut win over John Mason at Bethnal Green’s historic York Hall set him on a string of nine fights without defeat.
An English title fight with Jahmaine Smyle saw McKenzie suffer a first defeat before he rounded off an 11-fight career with a nine-round loss to Cello Renda.
The ex-striker also joined forces with former England cricketer Steve Harmison for a talkSPORT podcast on sports stars’ post-retirement plans.
He said: “For a while I was trying to hold on to ‘former professional boxer and footballer’. That was my identity. I’ve accepted my position now.”

    Curtis Woodhouse
Few footballers have made the switch to boxing as convincingly as Woodhouse.
Birmingham paid £1million to sign the midfielder from Sheffield United in 2001 before spells with Peterborough, Hull and more.
Disenchanted with the game, he quit aged 26 to spark a long career in the ring.
An assault conviction halted Woodhouse’s rise but he soon began teaming both of his sports.

Roy Hodgson, 76, taken ill during Crystal Palace training with press conference cancelled

ROY HODGSON’S pre-match press conference has been cancelled after the 76-year-old was taken ill during training this morning. The Crystal Palace boss had been due to face the media at 1:30pm.

At 12:55pm members of the press were informed that Hodgson would not be attending his usual press conference after falling ill earlier today.
Palace then confirmed on social media: “Unfortunately, today’s press conference will no longer take place as scheduled as Roy Hodgson was taken ill during this morning’s training session.”
Hodgson’s long-term assistant Ray Lewington left Palace’s training ground at 1:30pm.
Asked about his boss’ condition, Lewington, 67, said: “Roy’s okay.”

The Eagles are due to face Everton at Goodison Park on Monday night.

Former Palace defender Paddy McCarthy took the team on that day, assisted by Lewington.
Palace players are set to be off tomorrow.

Hodgson has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks.
Palace have endured a run of just two wins their last 15 games in all competitions.
Chelsea fans come up with ‘the chant we need’ during bizarre delay as Crystal Palace decision backfires horribly
Hodgson’s side squandered a 1-0 lead to lose 3-1 at home to Chelsea on Monday night.
The Eagles have been struck by injuries to key men, with Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi all missing the match against the Blues.
Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman is claimed to have made contact with former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner over replacing Hodgson at Selhurst Park.
Glasner, 49, has been out of work since leaving Eintracht at the end of last season.
Palace have also shown an interest in Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna.
But the Northern Irishman, 37, is believed to be unwilling to leave Ipswich as they battle for their second consecutive promotion.
Hodgson was recently criticised by fans for his handling of Olise’s hamstring injury.
With the winger, 22, having only been deemed fit enough for the bench, Hodgson brought him on with his side trailing Brighton 3-0 at half-time.
Olise limped off just 11 minutes later and is now set to be missing for two months.

Defending his decision making during the 4-1 defeat, Hodgson said last week: “It boils down more to the fact that when there was a chance that he could be available, basically everyone got together and decided perhaps he can be available.
“But we need to start him on the bench, maybe only bring him on in the second half, that’s where we all were.
“Then I suppose we strode blindly ahead, but it’s not easy when you’ve got a player like Olise on the bench to turn around and say ‘by the way you just sit there and watch the game because we don’t need you’.
“That’s not quite so easy, and there was no indication from us that he was happy to do that, but of course Michael’s a quiet guy so that’s the other unfortunate part of this whole equation.
“Another player might have come and said ‘I don’t think it’s worth it, I don’t think I need to go on, I’d rather have a bit more time’ – but we can’t expect that of him.

Dan Ashworth’s transfer hits & misses as Man Utd close in on pinching Newcastle’s ex-Brighton chief as sporting director

MANCHESTER UNITED are closing in on Newcastle’s highly-rated director of football Dan Ashworth. The former West Brom, Brighton and FA chief has developed a reputation as one of the shrewdest transfer minds in the game.

And he is set to be handed a bumper war chest to turn around the Red Devils’ fortunes if, as expected, he makes the switch to Old Trafford.
Ashworth only joined Newcastle from Brighton in the summer of 2022 but he has already been approached by Man Utd and an agreement could be reached as soon as next week.
Ahead of the move, SunSport has taken a look at his hits and occasional misses in the transfer market.
    HITS

Ashworth forged a reputation at Brighton for signing hidden gems for peanuts – and there is no better example than Mitoma.

With 13 goals and 14 assists in 66 appearances, Manchester United have been linked with Mitoma previously and you imagine he will be right at the top of Ashworth’s wishlist at Old Trafford.
    Moises Caicedo
The Ecuadorian midfielder has struggled since leaving Brighton for Chelsea last summer after Brighton made a staggering profit north of £110m.
Bruno Guimaraes part of ‘best deal of transfer window’ as fans notice what Newcastle star swapped his shirt for

    Marc Cucurella
Another who has struggled since making the switch from Brighton to Chelsea, Cucurella is another example of Brighton’s stunning ‘buy low, sell high’ policy under Ashworth.

The Spanish left-back was landed for £15m from Getafe and was a revelation as the Seagulls finished ninth in 2021-22, landing the Player of the Season gong.
Chelsea and Manchester City battled for his signature, with the Blues securing Cucurella for £62m in another massive win for Ashworth and the South Coast club.

    Alexis Mac Allister
Brighton’s recruitment network under Ashworth was the envy of Europe – with Mac Allister another on a long list of unearthed diamonds.
Bought as untapped potential from Argentinos Juniors for just shy of £7million, the Argentinian World Cup winner had two loans before making his mark at the Amex.
The midfielder bagged 20 goals and nine assists for Brighton before Liverpool came calling in a deal worth up to £52m.

    Alexander Isak
Instead of being responsible for identifying players at Newcastle, Ashworth oversaw recruitment at St James’ Park.
Toon have spent huge sums under Saudi ownership compared to Brighton, with Isak the one signing under his short reign you could see joining him at Manchester United.
He won’t come cheap given the Magpies paid Real Sociedad a club record £60m for the Swedish striker in 2022, but Isak, 24, has scored 20 Prem goals in 39 games and has the potential to become one of the world’s best.

    Anthony Gordon
Nobody outside of Tyneside thought Newcastle had got a good deal when paying Everton £45m for Gordon in January 2023 after just seven goals in 78 games at Goodison Park.
But fast forward 13 months, after a difficult start to life at Newcastle, and the Scouser is starting to look like money very well spent.
The winger has seven Prem goals and five assists so far this campaign and could force his way into England’s Euros squad with a strong end to the campaign.

    MISSES
    Sandro Tonali
The one major blotch on Ashworth’s CV is the £52 million spent on “gambling addict” Sandro Tonali.
The Italian was hit and miss at the start of the season but before he was slapped with a 10-month betting ban in October.
Midfielder Tonali could still prove a good signing in years to come, it’s been Ashworth’s worst piece of business at Newcastle by far.

The winner saw Raphael Varane exchange some choice words with Luiz, with some speculating that the celebration was actually aimed at him and not Onana.

His striker twin brother Emil, meanwhile, has made three senior outings, and scored against Man Utd in the Uefa Youth League earlier this season.
Both have played for Denmark’s Under-18s, and will hope to emulate their big brother in starring for the senior national team.

Christian Mouroux, sporting director at Hojlund’s former local club Horsholm Usserod, told the Manchester Evening News of the brothers: “A lot of people who have met all three think the two younger brothers are at least as talented as Rasmus.
“All of them have been very well advanced compared to the average, but the two younger brothers were, compared to Rasmus at the same age, in front of him.
“In my opinion, if you’re talking about pure talent, I would go to the length of maybe saying the two little brothers have a slight competitive advantage.
“My personal favourite is Oscar. Emil is the more elegant player, he makes the elegant decisions and looks elegant when he’s dribbling and having beautiful passes, whereas Oscar is more of a bulldog, he’s a fighter, a winner, going into tackles, having courage.

“I think he has that because he was smaller than both of his brothers but also everyone else he was playing against.
“He had to compensate, so he is fearless, but also very good on the ball and he has that type of mentality where he is a winning personality, you can just see he wants to win in every single situation of the game.”
How the Hojlund brothers compareBy Etienne Fermie
Manchester United star Rasmus Hojlund is two years his twin brothers’ senior at 21-years-old. Like his siblings he began at Copenhagen in Denmark, before moving on to Sturm Graz in 2022.
Following just six months in Austria he joined Atalanta for around £14.5million – going on to catch the Red Devils’ eyes with his performances in Italy.
A £72million switch followed last summer, and having put his goalless first 14 Premier League games behind him, Hojlund has now scored in his last five appearances.
Having only turned 19 last month, Oscar and Emil are both still making their ways at Copenhagen.
Standing at 6ft, combative midfielder Oscar has made 17 first team outings, including against Man Utd and City in the Champions League.
A striker like his big brother, Emil has so far been limited to just three senior outings – although he did score against the Red Devils in the Uefa Youth League earlier this term.
All three brothers were developed by football-mad father Anders at their first local club, HUI.
With Oscar and Emil having both played for Denmark’s Under-18s, they will soon be hoping to play alongside big bro Rasmus for the senior side. More
