Fans baffled as Robertson smashes into Toney who’s denied penalty as they joke ‘Klopp farewell tour in full swing’

BAFFLED football fans joked the “Jurgen Klopp farewell tour is in full swing” after Brentford were denied a blatant penalty. The ball bounced towards Ivan Toney in the Liverpool 18-yard box.

But as the England striker controlled it on his chest, he was clattered into by Andy Robertson.
The left-back bundled into the back of Toney, sending him crashing to the ground.
But as the former Hull man kept his footing and booted clear, referee Michael Oliver ignored the Bees’ protests.
And VAR David Coote failed to intervene, either, despite the obvious bundle over from Robertson.

So it was no surprise fans watching the action at home could not believe the officials refused to award a spot-kick – and joked Klopp is getting preferential treatment ahead of his upcoming exit.
One said: “The Klopp Farewell Tour in full swing……”

The controversial incident happened in the 72nd minute with Liverpool leading 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
But moments later, Toney struck to pull one back – which could have made for an interesting finale.
Cody Gakpo did seal the 4-1 win with a late fourth for the travelling Reds after Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister and Mo Salah’s goals.
While it was still 0-0, though, Wataru Endo somehow escaped punishment despite a Diego Maradona-style fake header that saw him punch the ball, but it was missed by Oliver.

Martial, 28, is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season when his contract expires.
The French forward has struggled to find his feet at United with several injury issues standing in his way.
And Mourinho thought it was best to cash him in while his transfer value was still high after the 2018 World Cup.
A former United player told ESPN: “Jose told Ed and the Glazers that he wanted to get rid of Anthony Martial, that he was neither good enough nor reliable enough.

“That was vetoed by the Glazers – Joel was a big fan of Martial as a player.”
But the Glazers reportedly did not want to let him go because they liked the striker too much.
Martial arrived in a deal worth up to £61.5million, but will now walk away for free this summer – which the Special One envisioned during his time in charge.
The United striker has made 19 appearances but only found the back of the net twice this season.

And this failed transfer highlights the issues fans have with the American owners and hopes Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team can sort out after their 25 per cent takeover.
Meanwhile Martial has previously called out Mourinho’s treatment of him, saying in 2022: “He was talking about me in the press, little phrases, a bit like he had done with Karim Benzema at Real Madrid.
Jose Mourinho still holding out hope of winning Premier League title with Man Utd
“He likes these games, but he also knows who he is doing it with. He knows that I am 20 years old then and that if I say something, it is I who will be the young person who lacks respect.
“So I said nothing, it was useless. In the second season, I was the team’s top scorer in the first part of the season, he brought in Alexis Sanchez and I hardly played anymore.
“It’s the season of the World Cup and it cost me dearly, especially since the France team won. I should have been there.” More

Fans realise Bukayo Saka has better stats than Ronaldo through first 210 games but some say ‘show me the trophies’

BUKAYO SAKA has better stats than Cristiano Ronaldo through their first 210 matches in club football. But Manchester United fans were quick to point out the key difference in trophies.

Saka, 22, broke through into the Arsenal first team in 2018-19 as a left-back but made his place secure in the following campaign, moving further forward as an attacking winger.
Last weekend’s 6-0 thumping of West Ham was his 210th appearance in all competition for the Gunners.
In that time, he has scored 51 goals – including two at the London Stadium – and provided 49 assists, totalling 100 goal involvements.
By contrast, Ronaldo hit the landmark of 210 club games for Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United games in April 2007.

At that stage and also aged 22, the Portuguese sensation had managed 50 goals and 37 assists, taking him to 87 goal involvements overall – 13 behind Saka.
And though many were stunned to see Saka outperform Ronaldo, others were quick to look at their respective trophy cabinets.
One said: “Saka is clearly on the right path. He’ll be unplayable when he hits his peak years.”

A third added: “In terms of football abilities Saka is clear of Ronaldo.”

I had huge doubts over Man Utd signing but Cristiano Ronaldo leapt to his defence, says Rio Ferdinand
And a final user commented: “Ok hold up…show me the trophies.”
As for the silverware, Saka has an FA Cup winner’s medal and two Community Shield wins in his career.
Ronaldo, however, technically only had a Portuguese Super Cup, an FA Cup and a League Cup by April 2007 – but soon added the first of his three Premier League titles weeks later, as well as the Community Shield.
He also ended the 2006-07 season as the PFA Player, Young Player and Fans’ Player of the Year, the Football Writers’ Association and Premier League Player of the Season.
England’s 32-cap star Saka also has a PFA Young Player of the Year award and both men have ended up on the losing side in Euros finals.
But 39-year-old Ronaldo, of course, has kicked on to become one of the greatest footballers ever with more than 850 goals, Euro 2016 glory, five Champions Leagues including one at United, five Ballons d’Or and countless individual records in an illustrious career spanning more than 20 years.

Brentford 1 Liverpool 4: Salah returns in huge win for Klopp’s side but injuries deal blow to Premier League title hopes

MO SALAH returned from injury with a bang – only to watch key Liverpool team-mates swap places with him in the treatment room.Salah’s assist and goal on his first appearance since a hamstring problem killed off the game and sealed the victory that kept the Reds clear at the top of the table.

Brentford were far off the pace against the table-topping RedsCredit: Getty
Here’s how the team’s compared on paper
    Liverpoool made their dominance count

But Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of fielding anything like a first-choice team for next weekend’s Carabao Cup Final were dealt a triple blow.
Klopp had already lost Curtis Jones when Diogo Jota was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Salah.
Then Darwin Nunez, scorer of the brilliant opening goal, did not come out for the second half.
Alexis Mac Allister extended the visitors’ lead from Salah’s pass then the Egyptian, after missing earlier chances, made the most of more poor Brentford defending to make it three.
Ivan Toney pulled one back with 15 minutes to go, but another howler by Nathan Collins allowed Luis Diaz to play in Cody Gakpo for the fourth.
At least the number of goals exceeded the injuries, but if the gap at the top remains clear, Klopp’s options in the short and medium term are not.
An open, attractive game began with a chance for the Bees. After a quick throw-in, Christian Norgaard found Vitaly Janelt unmarked in the box but the midfielder dragged his shot well off target.
Home ‘keeper Mark Flekken was soon forced into an excellent double save, first keeping out Conor Bradley’s cut effort then blocking Diogo Jota’s follow-up.
HOW TO GET FREE BETS ON FOOTBALL
Back came Brentford and a lovely move ended with Neal Maupay rolling the ball into Toney’s path, only for his striker partner to send a left-foot shot a good distance wide.
He soon sent a tame free kick straight into Caoimhin Kelleher’s arms.

And when released by Maupay in the channel, he could not put enough on his shot when under pressure from Ibrahima Konate.
At the other end, Jota forced another sharp stop from Flekken.
Norgaard failed to hit the target with another presentable chance before Liverpool took the lead.
Flekken went from taking a free kick to picking the ball out of his net within seconds.
The visitors cleared untidily with a punt by Virgil Van Dijk but what followed was perfection.
Jota’s header was weighted and directed just where Nunez wanted it. The Uruguayan charged on at pace and sent the most delicious chip over the Brentford keeper and under the bar.
But the Reds suffered their second injury blow of the afternoon before half time.
Curtis Jones had been forced off earlier, then Jota was taken off on a stretcher after Norgaard fell on him.

On came Salah to a chorus of welcome from the away fans.
The Egyptian King should have scored in the third of eight minutes of stoppage time, but Diaz’s cross just bounced off him.
Worse news for the Reds followed when Nunez did not emerge for the second half, and was replaced by Gakpo.
Diaz, the one Liverpool forward who deserved to go off, created an opening but sent his shot over the bar.
Then Salah wasted another fine opportunity.
Van Dijk’s header sent him clean through but his reluctance to use his right foot led to him jabbing a weird left-footed shot wide.
No matter. Moments later Salah made the second goal.
His pass found Mac Allister and the Argentinian World Cup winner outdid Kristoffer Ajer before jabbing home.

The result was Brentford’s eighth defeat in ten league gamesCredit: PA
Bradley, giving another fine performance in Alexander-Arnold’s place, just cleared the bar with his own effort.
Liverpool were finding life a little too easy, so Brentford boss Thomas Frank made a triple substitution.
Ajer’s block stopped Diaz earning Salah another assist. But soon he had a goal.
Gakpo won the header against Ajer, who was then let down by both his centre back partners.
Ben Mee just left the ball for Salah ran on to and when Nathan Collins came across, he failed to stop Salah hitting a shot across Flekken to make it 3-0.
The Bees felt a flutter of hope when Toney followed up to score after Kelleher made a superb stop from Sergio Reguilon.
The home team threatened little, though, until Collins was guilty of another rank piece of defending.
The former Wolves man allowed the ball to go through him, leaving Diaz to find Gakpo and the Dutchman to find the net.
Flekken kept out a late Harvey Elliott free kick, Van Dijk hit the bar and Kelleher made a save himself in between, but this was a relegation performance from Brentford.
Injuries may yet play a big role in whether this is a trophy-winning season for Liverpool.
