Arsenal are NOT serious title challengers despite back-to-back thrashings, claims Premier League legend John Barnes

LIVERPOOL legend John Barnes has written off Arsenal’s title chances. The Gunners are yet again in contention for the crown having agonisingly missed out to Manchester City last season.

Arsenal at one point were seven points clear at the top before a loss of form towards the end of the season finished their title hopes.
Mikel Arteta’s troops have been on a brilliant run of form of late, unbeaten in the league since the start of the year.
Despite two convincing away wins against West Ham and Burnley, Barnes is not convinced by Arsenal’s title challenge.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Barnes believes that his former team can still challenge for the title.

He said: “Liverpool for me are the closest challengers because there are certain games where Liverpool haven’t played well but have got a result.”
Barnes thinks that Arsenal still struggle to win matches whenever they are not at their best.
He believes that it is a two-horse race between Man City and Liverpool this season.
Barnes added: “Arsenal have to play well to win and if they don’t play well they may not win, and that is why as much as they’re doing well I still think it’s between Man City and Liverpool.”

Why is Liverpool vs Luton Town not on TV?

LIVERPOOL were triumphant again with another win at Brentford – but were left counting the cost of yet more injuries.Liverpool fans’ joy at being clear at the top could only be short lived as injuries keep piling up for Jurgen Klopp.
Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones sustained what looked like pretty severe injuries with the Portuguese forward carried off on a stretcher.
Darwin Nunez – who scored a brilliant lob to set Liverpool on their way – was also taken off at half time, although that is expected to have been a precaution.
Jota and Jones could miss out against Luton Town on Wednesday, with the likes of Alisson Becker, Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Dominik Szoboszlai also potentially missing.
Why Liverpool are playing on Wednesday
Liverpool are hosting Luton Town on Wednesday night after the fixture was rearranged.
The Hatters were meant to visit Anfield on Saturday, February 24 at 3pm but this fixture had to be brought forward because of Liverpool’s participation in the Carabao Cup Final.

Despite being the only Premier League game being played on Wednesday, it will remain OFF of British TV screens.
This is because of the Saturday 3pm blackout – Premier League rules dictate that if a game was originally arranged to take place at that time, a rescheduled game cannot be shown on TV.
After their game against Luton, Liverpool will be hoping to overcome Chelsea in the highly anticipated Carabao Cup Final this Sunday at Wembley.

Why Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Luton isn’t on TV due to bizarre blackout rule

LIVERPOOL face Luton in their rearranged Premier League clash on Wednesday night. But the tie is NOT being shown live on TV due to a bizarre rule.
Luton make the trip to Liverpool on Wednesday nightCredit: The Times
The Reds were originally set to host the Hatters at Anfield this coming Saturday, February 24.
But due to Jurgen Klopp’s side booking their place in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea, the Premier League match needed to be rescheduled.
And the clash was brought forward three days to Wednesday night, with a 7.30pm kick-off under the lights on Merseyside.
However, fans will not be able to watch the action live on UK TV.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
That is because the match was not originally selected by broadcasters Sky Sports or TNT Sports.
And that meant it was due to be played at 3pm on Saturday – during the nationwide TV football blackout.
Therefore, the match cannot subsequently be picked up by Sky or TNT because the companies have a limited number of matches as part of their deals with the Premier League.
So the fixture remains untelevised – just like Manchester City vs Brentford 24 hours earlier, which was moved due to the Treble winners’ involvement in the Club World Cup over Christmas.

Liverpool go into the game with Luton off the back of their thumping 4-1 win at Brentford and sitting top of the table.
Mo Salah returned with a goal and an assist in West London.
But Klopp is sweating on the fitness of Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota who all went off injured just eight days before the Carabao Cup final.
Luton remain in the thick of the relegation scrap but were unfortunate to lose 2-1 to Manchester United on Sunday, undone by a couple of errors and Casemiro escaping a red card. More

As part of his role Clattenburg will watch Forest matches and advise the club on whether decisions were correct, if it was a subjective decision or not, and how to handle their grievances.
He will also been in contact with PGMOL chief Howard Webb, but it is a move Neville has described as “a step too far”.
Clattenburg has dismissed his concerns and suggested he is being hypocritical since Sky Sports – Neville’s employer – also lean on former refs for their expertise.
Clattenburg told The Times: “I am disappointed that Gary Neville has come out with what he said.

The former Manchester United star feels Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have taken things a step to far by becoming the first Prem club to hire a referee’s analyst.
He said: “What is Mark Clattenburg doing? I’ve worked with Mark. What are you doing? You’re being employed to go and tell a football club how referees are making mistakes or what mistakes they’re making. A fan in the crowd could go and tell you what a referee is thinking.

Roy Hodgson, 76, quits as Crystal Palace manager days after hospital dash with Oliver Glasner set to replace him

The South Londoners, 16th in the table, have won just two of their last 15 games in all competitions prior to the veteran boss falling ill ahead of their Monday Night Football clash with Everton.
Hodgson had offered to take charge of the club’s trip to Goodison Park and play a role either from the dugout or, more likely, the directors’ box.
But the confirmation of his exit came just four hours before kick-off on Merseyside with Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington managing the side.
Hodgson, who is now out of hospital, said: “This club is very special and means so much to me and has played a big part in my footballing life. I have fully enjoyed my time here across six seasons, as it has given me the chance to work with top-class players and staff doing what I love every day.

“However, I understand, given recent circumstances, it may be prudent at this time for the club to plan ahead, and therefore I have taken the decision to step aside so that the club can bring forward their plans for a new manager, as intended for this summer.
“My thanks and respect to the current squad of players who have been a pleasure to work with – they are a credit to the club and themselves.”
Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner is set to replace Hodgson in the dugout.
Glasner was already in talks over taking over at Selhurst Park amid the poor run of form that saw Palace plunge into the relegation scrap.

Chairman Steve Parish added: “Roy has a special place in Crystal Palace history and this will never be forgotten. After four years in which he led the club to maintaining Premier League status season after season, he once again joined us nearly a year ago to steady the ship, and worked wonders.
“That he then agreed to continue in the summer speaks volumes about his commitment to our club. Quite simply, we owe our continued Premier League status to Roy.

Conor Gallagher apologises live on Sky Sports in interview after Chelsea’s win over Crystal Palace
“I would like to thank Roy enormously for his service and wish him the very best for the future. It’s fair to say Roy has the keys to Selhurst Park and will always be welcomed back.”
In recent weeks, several protests by Eagles fans have taken place to voice their anger over what they deem as a lack of ambition at Selhurst Park.
Supporters at the 5-0 defeat to Arsenal held up banners in protest.
And after losing to bitter rivals Brighton 4-1, players and fans argued with each other.
Hodgson quits Palace for the second time having left the club back in 2021, with a total of 200 games managed.
The former England gaffer stepped down from his post back then after a four-year spell in South London to allow for Patrick Vieira to come in.

Although after just over a season-and-a-half, Palace sacked the Frenchman and re-appointed Hodgson as they battled relegation.
He saved the club from the drop that time around but has struggled to continue their initial upturn in form since the summer.
They currently sit just five points off the relegation zone.
Palace have though had a torrid time with injuries this season with major players like Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise missing long stretches of the campaign.
Marc Guehi was also absent for their clash with Chelsea with a knee issue.
And the London club have been adjusting to life without star man Wilfried Zaha, who left for Galatasaray in the summer.
    GLAS HALF FULL
Glasner has agreed to take over and held talks with chief Parish while Hodgson was in hospital.
The Austrian is the choice of owner John Textor.
Glasner guided the Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory in 2022 and into the knockout stages of the Champions League the following year.
But he has been out of work since the end of last season.
He previously managed Wolfsburg, guiding them to a fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga in the 2020-21 campaign.
