West Ham 2 Liverpool 2: Struggling Reds throw away lead to drop more points with Premier League title hopes all but over

LIVERPOOL let their faint hopes of the title fade to almost nothing with a demoralising draw. The collapse of their season was summed up by Mo Salah rowing with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline before being introduced as a late substitute.Liverpool’s title hopes appear to be over after a 2-2 draw with West HamCredit: GettyMichail Antonio grabbed a point for the HammersCredit: PAKlopp’s side came from behind yet again to lead 2-1 heading into the closing stages at the London Stadium. But Michail Antonio headed an equaliser that left the visitors two points adrift of leaders Arsenal, having played a game more, after a disastrous week. All the elements of Liverpool’s disappointing end to Klopp’s farewell campaign were present. They found themselves in arrears for the 18th time in 35 league games when Jarrod Bowen headed West Ham into the lead after a set-piece ahead just before half-time.Andy Robertson drew them level soon after half-time, and they went ahead through an Alphonse Areola own goal. But then they missed good chances to take the game away from the Hammers. And as nerves started to take hold at the back, Bowen’s excellent cross found Antonio. It said a lot about the low-key first half that for much of it, the closest it came to a goal was shots from right-backs.BEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSApart from Lucas Paqueta’s ugly early foul on Alexis Mac Allister, for which he was not even booked, neither side looked too bothered.Liverpool thought they had a penalty in the 27th minute when Angelo Ogbonna fouled Cody Gakpo but Luis Diaz had been offside in the build-up.Manchester United fan Luke Littler goads Liverpool-supporting darts fanatics on walk-onShortly afterwards Trent Alexander-Arnold found himself furthest forward and West Ham goalkeeper Areola fisted the shot away, his first significant save of the day. Then at the other end, Vladimir Coufal’s rasper was caught by Alisson.Diaz was the only Liverpool showing consistent purpose and belief, and he saw a 40th-minute shot come back off Areola’s near post. But then his team switched off at the other end. Alisson made a fine save from Bowen’s deflected shot to concede a corner. The Liverpool defence failed to notice West Ham taking it quickly, Mohammed Kudus crossed and Bowen got enough on his header to beat Alisson. The visitors came out early for the second half and quickly equalised.Diaz fed Robertson, whose tame-looking shot was not kept out by Areola’s weak right hand.Liverpool could have been in front soon afterwards, but Ryan Gravenberch attempted a silly finish from Gakpo’s cross. The chances kept coming. Ogbonna blocked Gakpo’s shot, Areola saved from Alexander-Arnold.Then the Hammers goalkeeper got an unnecessary touch on a Gravenberch effort and the visitors scored from the resulting corner.Gravenberch’s shot found its way into the net via deflections off Ogbonna, Soucek and finally Areola.Jarrod Bowen gave the hosts a half-time leadCredit: GettyAndy Robertson brought the Reds level just after the breakCredit: ReutersRobertson’s strike should have been kept outCredit: EPAAlphonse Areola was credited with the own goalCredit: ReutersAntonio rose high with no challenge around himCredit: ReutersThe Frenchman denied Diaz twice, either side of Mac Allister failing to beat him with a close-range header, keeping the score at 2-1.But then came signs of nerves at the back from Liverpool and Alisson had to push away a fierce shot from Emerson. And moments later Bowen crossed superbly for Antonio to equalise.Klopp made a triple change, introducing Salah and Darwin Nunez in search of another late winner – but not before Nunez had to act as peacemaker between his gesticulating team-mate and the manager.Coufal denied Nunez a tap-in from a Salah cross in the 84th minute and there were other nervous moments for the Hammers, especially when Salah broke and Harvey Elliott hit the bar.But there was to be no late salvation for Liverpool this time and there will be no farewell title for Klopp. Here’s how the action unfolded at the London Stadium… More

Incoming Liverpool boss Arne Slot names three Premier League teams he loves watching most – and Reds AREN’T one of them

ARNE SLOT has scored an early own goal as the incoming Liverpool boss – by admitting the Reds are not one of his favourite Premier League teams to watch. The Feyenoord boss, 45, is poised to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.Arne Slot is on course to leave Feyenoord to become Liverpool bossCredit: GettyHe admitted his love for Pep Guardiola’s style of playCredit: EPAThe two clubs have agreed a compensation package worth approximately £9.4million for the Dutchman to be bought out of his contract in Rotterdam. However, Liverpool fans will be hoping for a change of heart from Slot following an interview that has resurfaced from May 2023.Asked about his admiration for Manchester City chief Pep Guardiola, he told Voetbal International: “I certainly don’t want to compare myself to Pep, but he is a control freak just like me. “If I look at myself, I try to win a match in the week before it is played, by conveying the training, pre-match team talks and tactics to the players as perfectly as possible.”READ MORE ON FOOTBALLThen he revealed watching City is his “ultimate joy in football”.And Slot revealed there are two other top-flight English teams he makes a beeline to catch when they are on – but Liverpool are not one of them.He added: “There is no team in the world I would rather watch than Manchester City, followed by Napoli, Arsenal and Brighton.”But City – and again it is not my intention to compare us with them – have a similar style of play to how we want to play with Feyenoord: 4-3-3, building up from the back, wanting to apply pressure quickly.”Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSSlot is set to take over as Klopp’s successor with the German resigning at the end of the Premier League season on May 19.His final game in charge after nearly nine years will be the home clash with Wolves – which could still see the Reds clinch the title.Jurgen Klopp apologises to Liverpool fans after Merseyside derby defeatAlthough that now seems unlikely following shock defeats to Crystal Palace and rivals Everton in recent weeks. Slot appears to be the ideal candidate to replace Klopp – both on and off the pitch. His high-pressing style of football has seen Feyenoord mix it with the biggest teams in the Eredivisie, winning the title in 2022-23. He is keen to give youngsters a chance and is a strong man-manager.Being fluent in English will help him communicate with the players – and enable him to express his charismatic and funny personality.Slot snubbed Spurs, hates defending and has a PASS named after himBy Dan King
LIVERPOOL managerial target Arne Slot was a good enough player to have a type of pass named after him.
But it is as a manager that the Feyenoord head coach is really making his mark.
Like another bald Dutchman, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, Slot earned his stripes bossing smaller sides before being given a chance at one of the Netherlands’ big three.
But the question Liverpool are pondering is whether Slot would make a better fist of running one of the biggest clubs in the world than Ten Hag so far has at Old Trafford.
Slot, 45, was certainly easier on the eye as a player than centre back Ten Hag.
“The Arne Slot Ball” was something he perfected as a silky No 10 – a back-to-goal, first-time, 180-degree spin and flick behind the defensive line for a winger to run on to deep in the opposition half.

Slot looks on course to be joined at Anfield by his right-hand man Sipke Hulshoff. The Reds are also keen to poach Feyenoord’s head of performance Ruben Peeters and analyst Etienne Reijnen. The confirmation of his appointment is set to be announced imminently. Klopp said of Slot’s expected arrival: “I’m not involved in the process, just to clarify that.Arne Slot’s record is WORSE than Erik ten Hag’s
ARNE SLOT is set to be tasked with a near-impossible job – replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Should he swap the Eredivisie for the Premier League, Slot will follow in the footsteps of fellow follically-challenged Dutchman Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag left Ajax to become Manchester United manager in 2022.
But he has suffered a nightmare spell at Old Trafford and appears to be a dead-man walking despite making the FA Cup final.
With Slot seemingly destined for Anfield, fans won’t be able to help but compare his record in Holland with Ten Hag’s.
And Reds supporters won’t like what they see.
