IT IS HIGHLY unlikely that Mauricio Pochettino is familiar with the work of Rumi.
Whether the renowned Islamic poet and mystic had the tactical dilemmas facing Chelsea’s head coach in mind while dreaming up his scholarly works in 13th century Afghanistan, we will never know.
It’s fair to say Rumi was not a regular in The Shed at Stamford Bridge.
Yet one of his most famous quotations strikes right at the heart of Pochettino’s problems trying to transform his team into consistent challengers at the top end of the Premier League.
It was Rumi who wrote so prophetically: “Two birds tied together. They will not be able to fly even though they have four wings.”
He could have scribbled that on the back of his programme from so many of Chelsea’s games this season with regard to Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
There is a feeling among regular Chelsea watchers that while it is a blow on a personal level for Fernandez to be ruled out for the rest of the season with his injury problem, it may yet turn to Pochettino’s advantage.
For it allows Caicedo to roam that patch in front of his defence with greater freedom. Both players are exceptional individual talents.

I’m not so sure…By Dave Kidd
THERE was much praise for the Manchester United away fans when they sang their hearts out until the end of the 4-0 humping by Crystal Palace.
Not least from Erik ten Hag, who claims their singing is an indication that supporters back him and his mid-table squad.
And on Sunday, United’s supporters were in good voice again — before the match in the Bishop Blaize pub, during the match on the Stretford End and after it on Manchester’s sweatbox trams during an almighty monsoon.
They sang songs about George Best, Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Park Ji-sung, Jaap Stam, Nemanja Vidic and — as Arsenal were in town — Robin van Persie, too.
But there wasn’t a single song about any current player.
And there were also self-deprecating renditions of ‘we’re f***ing s**t!’
Not quite the ringing endorsements that Ten Hag thought he’d heard. More

VAR could be SCRAPPED next season with Premier League sides to vote on change after club files motion

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs could scrap VAR from the start of next season.Top-flight sides are set to vote on whether or not to continue using the video assistants following a complaint from Wolves.Premier League clubs are set to vote on whether to scrap VARCredit: AFPAccording to The Athletic, the club have formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League calling for VAR to be scrapped. In doing so, Wolves have triggered a vote from the 20 clubs on June 6.A statement from Wolves reads: “There is no blame to be placed — we are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football — and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success.”However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future.READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS”Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards.”The club added that they accept the decision to introduce VAR was “made in good faith” and “with the best interests of football and the Premier League at its heart”.However, they now argue the practice has caused “numerous negative consequences”.CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSWolves also claim those consequences are “damaging the relationship between fans and football” as well as “undermining the value of the Premier League brand”.Most read in FootballMeanwhile, a spokesperson for the Premier League said: “The Premier League can confirm it will facilitate a discussion on VAR with our clubs at the annual general meeting next month. Most dramatic Premier League’s final days”Clubs are entitled to put forward proposals at shareholders’ meetings and we acknowledge the concerns and issues around the use of VAR.”However, the league fully supports the use of VAR and remains committed, alongside PGMOL, to make continued improvements to the system for the benefit of the game and fans.”VAR was introduced in the Premier League from the start of the 2019/20 season, though. The current campaign has seen multiple flashpoints caused by the use of video assistant referees, though.Wolves’ VAR complaintsWolves have listed nine negative repercussions from the introduction of VAR in their complaint.

Impact on goal celebrations and the spontaneous passion that makes football special
Frustration and confusion inside stadiums due to lengthy VAR checks and poor communication
A more hostile atmosphere with protests, booing of the Premier League anthem and chants against VAR
Overreach of VAR’s original purpose to correct clear and obvious mistakes, now overanalysing subjective decisions and compromising the game’s fluidity and integrity
Diminished accountability of on-field officials, due to the safety net of VAR, leading to an erosion of authority on the pitch
Continued errors despite VAR, with supporters unable to accept human error after multiple views and replays, damaging confidence in officiating standards
Disruption of the Premier League’s fast pace with lengthy VAR checks and more added time, causing matches to run excessively long
Constant discourse about VAR decisions often overshadowing the match itself, and tarnishing the reputation of the league
Erosion of trust and reputation, with VAR fuelling completely nonsensical allegations of corruption

Liverpool wrongly had a goal disallowed in their controversial loss to Tottenham in September.Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have written letters of complaint to the PGMOL.Forest even publicly questioned the appointment of VAR Stuart Attwell after their defeat to Everton last month.Clubs in Sweden recently voted against introducing VAR to the country’s top-flight. MATT WADE, head of sporting strategy at Feyenoord
“He is a brilliant communicator, and consultative, but also clear at the same time.
“He is quite cautious, quite introverted, but very rule based and principled, which means everyone knows where they stand.
“And he is not paranoid, which allows freedom for specialists to operate.”
SANDER WESTERVELD, former Liverpool goalkeeper and team-mate of Arne Slot
“When I played with Arne at Sparta, you could see that he would become a coach.
“He was a leader, a No10 midfielder and someone who would change tactics by himself.
“The job he has done at Feyenoord makes him the perfect fit for Liverpool.”
Dutch football journalist MARCEL VAN DER KRAAN
“I’ve followed Feyenoord for 40 years. Not since the days of Johan Cruyff at Ajax in the 1980s has there been a coach so attack-minded in the Dutch league.
“Cruyff only had a few disciples who followed him and one of them was Pep Guardiola.”
Arsenal star REISS NELSON who played 31 games under Slot on loan at Feyenoord
“I felt like Arne Slot is a great manager. He really got me into my rhythm.
“He gave me a lot of opportunities to play and I excelled.”

But Lijnders returned to Liverpool as assistant manager ahead of the 2018/19 campaign and played a key role in Klopp’s success.Liverpool were denied a place at the expanded 2025 Club World Cup while Arsenal also missed out after they were eliminated from the Champions League.Fifa decided that no more than two teams per country would be guaranteed participation in the controversial 32-team event with Man City and Chelsea representing the Premier League. Each Champions League winner from the period between 2021 and 2024 qualifies, meaning the 2023 and 2021 winners both make the cut. That ruled out the Kopites, while Arsenal needed to go all the way by winning this season’s Champions League to take part in it.However, they have now been knocked out of both events as a result of their defeat by Bayern Munich in the quarters.Instead, their spot will go to RB Salzburg – who will have their new man at the helm.READ MORE SUN STORIESThey’ve never won a European trophy and have only ever made it out of the Champions League group stage once. The second criteria is based on a club’s place in the Uefa Champions League coefficient over the same period, which is how Salzburg got in.Klopp has botched his Liverpool exit… and it’s cost him his legacy, says Dave KiddBy Dave Kidd
NOW we know Jurgen Klopp’s final major trophy haul at Liverpool — one Champions League, one Premier League, one FA Cup, two League Cups and (if you must) a World Club Cup.
But where does his reign stand among the greatest of the Premier League era?
In black-and-white terms, Klopp is way behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola, the only two men to have won multiple Premier Leagues and a Champions League at the same club.
Those two sit alongside Brian Clough, Bob Paisley and Sir Matt Busby as the undoubted all-time managerial greats of the English game.
But Klopp ranks in the next tier down — with Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho (the Chelsea version), Bill Shankly and Don Revie.
These were all men with the strength of character to transform their clubs in their own image and enjoy success but who did not win as much as they might have done.
Had Klopp managed to keep his intentions under wraps and ended up with another title, perhaps even a treble or quadruple, he’d have edged himself up into that highest echelon with Ferguson, Guardiola, Clough, Paisley and Busby.
But deciding the timing and the manner of your exit is one of the toughest calls for any manager or sportsman.
    Klopp got it wrong.
