ARNE SLOT is set to be tasked with a near-impossible job – replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Should he swap the Eredivisie for the Premier League, Slot will follow in the footsteps of fellow follically-challenged Dutchman Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag left Ajax to become Manchester United manager in 2022.
But he has suffered a nightmare spell at Old Trafford and appears to be a dead-man walking despite making the FA Cup final.
With Slot seemingly destined for Anfield, fans won’t be able to help but compare his record in Holland with Ten Hag’s.
And Reds supporters won’t like what they see.

Arsenal 2 Everton 1: Havertz scores controversial late goal but Gunners miss out on title after Man City win

ARSENAL fell short of winning the Premier League – despite a dramatic and controversial late winner against Everton. The Gunners knew they needed to win at the Emirates and were reliant on a huge helping hand from West Ham getting a result at Manchester City.Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title on the final day of the seasonCredit: GettyThe Gunners struggled against Everton before a late winnerCredit: ReutersMikel Arteta knew he needed a favour from West Ham at Manchester CityCredit: GettyArsenal fans constantly checked their phones throughout the matchCredit: ReutersBukayo Saka was ruled out and was devastated at what he sawCredit: ReutersFrustrations got too much for Kai HavertzCredit: GettyDeclan Rice was among the dejected Arsenal stars on full-timeCredit: GettyCaptain Martin Odegaard was helpless as Man City claimed the titleCredit: ReutersAnd they had the nightmare start as Phil Foden blasted City in front after just 79 seconds at the Etihad then added his second on 18 minutes.Things got worse for Mikel Arteta just before half-time in North London when Idrissa Gueye’s free-kick flew in off Declan Rice’s head, leaving David Raya utterly wrong-footed.Arsenal’s fortunes appeared to be changing moments later when Takehiro Tomiyasu slotted into the bottom corner – and Mohammed Kudus produced a wonderful overhead kick to pull West Ham back into the game. But a Rodri strike on the hour mark put City beyond grasp – meaning that the result at the Emirates was academic as Pep Guardiola secured a fourth title on the bounce. READ MORE ON FOOTBALLHowever, Arsenal did ensure they had something to cheer about when Kai Havertz struck late.VAR had a long look at Gabriel Jesus’ possible handball in the build-up but referee Michael Oliver was happy and the goal was allowed to stand – confirming Arsenal ended with a win and two points behind City. They came to the Emirates more in hope than expectation.Yet just for a few precious minutes, either side of half-time and at the end of the match, Arsenal’s fans were able to dream of everything, maybe, falling into place. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSBecause when Tomiyasu struck that equaliser to cancel out the deflected free-kick from Gueye – and news filtered through of Kudus pulling one back at Manchester City – the noise inside the Emirates was deafening. There was also excitement when Havertz made it 2-1 with West Ham scoring another at City, only for VAR to spot Tomas Soucek’s blatant handball and disallow it.Arsenal’s five season-defining momentsArsenal’s five key moments this seasonA look at five of the key moments in Arsenal’s title challenge…

Arsenal 1 – 0 Man City: Arsenal beat Manchester City at the Emirates in dramatic fashion early in the season to give them belief that they could compete for the title once again.
Arsenal 5 – 0 Crystal Palace: The Gunners bounce back from a run of five games with only one victory by smashing the Eagles. The win kick-starts a spell of seven consecutive wins in which they scored 33 goals and conceded just four.
Arsenal 3 – 1 Liverpool: A huge victory against a then title challenger in Liverpool pushed Arsenal within touching distance of the top of the table.
Man City 0 – 0 Arsenal: A goalless draw meant things stayed the same in the title race and Arsenal were able to keep pace with their competitors.
Spurs 2 – 3 Arsenal: Arsenal blew away their fiercest rival in the first half before digging in to prevent a second half comeback – the Gunners were a matter of games away from winning the league as a result.

Ultimately, though, we ended up with the outcome that everyone expected. Sadly for Arsenal, something is certainly wrong if you are having to rely on West Ham to get you the title. The fact Arsenal struggled to get the win here was testament to Everton who were anything but on the beach. In the dying moments of the game, with the title no longer a possibility, Arsenal’s fans continually sang the name of their manager. And while it might not be much of a consolation, Mikel Arteta’s side are not going anywhere. They will definitely be challenging for the title next season.Even so, a second successive title blow-up will hurt. Arsenal will reflect on the day City turned from third favourites to champions-elect when Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace and Arteta’s team were beaten by Aston Villa for the second time this season.Equally, defeats in successive matches to Fulham and West Ham in December were hugely damaging even though the Villa loss on April 14 was the time when the season took a final twist, in favour of City.Yet Arsenal fans will still look back on another fine season, better than the previous one, and thanks to Arteta, are back near the top of the top of English football. In the end, they have finished with 89 points, just one fewer than their Invincibles season 20 years ago.A few of those players returned today to watch what they hoped would be one of the greatest days in Arsenal’s history, however unlikely it was. While there was plenty of noise among the fans for the first few minutes, it went a bit quiet once news spread that Phil Foden had given City that early lead.Yet Arsenal peppered the Everton goal and a straightforward win seemed a formality.Tomiyasu should have done much better with an early header while Rice scuffed a shot straight at England mate Jordan Pickford. The Everton keeper also showed good reflexes to prevent Seamus Coleman from scoring an own goal and got down low to his right to block a shot from Gabriel Martinelli.Moments after news filtered through that Foden made it 2-0, the crowd delivered a rendition of ‘Arsenal we love you’ while others opted for a loo break. To their credit, Everton defended stubbornly and were a danger on the counter-attack. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has completed the season with a flourish, fired a shot against the post and then stuck the rebound wide. And if that scare was not on the script what happened next was certainly not when Idrissa Gueye’s free-kick came off the head of Rice and the ball was deflected into the opposite corner. With five minutes to go before half-time, a huge number of fans decided that was the moment to head for a pie and pint, even though you could argue they had four hours to do so before the game. Those supporters missed a good finish by Tomiyasu from just inside the area after Martin Odegaard cut the ball back. And when West Ham made it 2-1, it was like someone flicked a switch and the atmosphere was jubilant because there was a chance, however small, that City might cock this up.There were Chinese whispers around the ground when some supporters thought West Ham had levelled for 2-2.Yet as Gabriel Magalhaes went off with a shoulder injury just before the hour, Arsenal suffered more pain with the news that Rodri had given City a 3-1 lead.Jurren Timber, who arrived last summer, was given a standing ovation when making his first appearance since injuring his ACL on the first day of the season. And another summer signing, Havertz, then grabbed the winner from close range West Ham had a goal disallowed.Referee Oliver was called to the screen by VAR for a handball by Jesus yet he allowed the goal to stand – but unfortunately for Arsenal, West Ham remained 3-1 down.READ MORE SUN STORIESNow, for Arteta, the hard work begins again. He will have some money to burn this summer and he will sign a new No9 and another central midfielder. And maybe 12 months from now, there will be a proper party here in North London as, perhaps, City finally lose their grip on the Premier League.Idrissa Gueye’s free-kick went in off Declan RiceCredit: ReutersHavertz struck a late winner on the dayCredit: GettyEverton threatened to add further misery when they took the leadCredit: GettyTakehiro Tomiyasu got Arsenal level immediatelyCredit: GettyThe Gunners needed to find a winner and hope West Ham came back at the EtihadCredit: GettyJurrien Timber came on in the second halfCredit: GettySean Dyche was fuming the Havertz winner was allowed to standCredit: ReutersCaptain Odegaard did not get the chance to lift the Premier League trophyCredit: GettyArteta and Rice reflected on the disappointment after full-timeCredit: Reuters More

Arsenal fans erupt in celebration after West Ham ‘equaliser’ against Man City – before realising they’ve been duped

ARSENAL fans were tricked into celebrating a West Ham “equaliser” during the final day of the Premier League season.Fans inside the Emirates Stadium began celebrating what they thought was a Hammers goal against Manchester City.An equaliser would open the door for the Gunners to win the title if they beat Everton.City had raced into an early lead thanks to Phil Foden’s second minute strike, before he doubled their lead 16 minutes later.Arsenal supporters were left looking dejected in North London after learning City were in front. It got even worse moments later as Everton took a shock lead, only for Takehiro Tomiyasu to equalise shortly after.READ MORE ON ARSENALMeanwhile, Mohammed Kudus reduced City’s lead just before half-time with a stunning overhead kick.Fans at the Emirates Stadium suddenly celebrated again moments later after thinking West Ham had levelled the match at 2-2.However, the celebrations soon calmed down once supporters realised they had been duped.THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY..The Sun is your go to destination for the best football, boxing and MMA news, real-life stories, jaw-dropping pictures and must-see video.Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheSunFootball and follow us from our main Twitter account at @TheSunFootball. Wolves have star SENT OFF by VAR in Klopp’s final Liverpool game days after filing motion to have it scrapped

NELSON SEMEDO was sent off for a lunge on Alexis Mac Allister in Wolves’ final-day clash with Liverpool.Referee Chris Kavanagh originally gave a yellow card but upgraded the punishment after being asked to check the monitor by the VAR.Nelson Semedo catches Alexis Mac Allister on the ankleCredit: Sky sportsThe Wolves star got his marching ordersCredit: ReutersMac Allister needed treatment after the challengeCredit: GettyThe Reds are trying to send Jurgen Klopp out on a high as the German leaves after eight-and-a-half years at the helm. And their chances were boosted by the red.Mac Allister scored just eight minutes later and Jarell Quansah made it 2-0 five minutes before the break.”No complaints. Abysmal challenge from Semedo,” said one fan on X.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLAnother added: “I think its an orange card, but what I’d say is that I’d find it impossible to believe the decision would have been overturned if it was Macallister on Semedo rather than the other way around. “Maybe I’m just paranoid/disillusioned though.”Top-flight sides are set to vote on whether or not to continue using the video assistants following a complaint from Wolves.According to The Athletic, the club have formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League calling for VAR to be scrapped. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSIn doing so, Wolves have triggered a vote from the 20 clubs on June 6.A statement from Wolves reads: “There is no blame to be placed — we are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football — and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success.Jurgen Klopp joins Instagram to share sweet farewell video.. and includes subtle nod to first Liverpool press conference”However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future.”Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards.”The club added that they accept the decision to introduce VAR was “made in good faith” and “with the best interests of football and the Premier League at its heart”.Wolves’ VAR complaintsWolves have listed nine negative repercussions from the introduction of VAR in their complaint.

Impact on goal celebrations and the spontaneous passion that makes football special
Frustration and confusion inside stadiums due to lengthy VAR checks and poor communication
A more hostile atmosphere with protests, booing of the Premier League anthem and chants against VAR
Overreach of VAR’s original purpose to correct clear and obvious mistakes, now overanalysing subjective decisions and compromising the game’s fluidity and integrity
Diminished accountability of on-field officials, due to the safety net of VAR, leading to an erosion of authority on the pitch
Continued errors despite VAR, with supporters unable to accept human error after multiple views and replays, damaging confidence in officiating standards
Disruption of the Premier League’s fast pace with lengthy VAR checks and more added time, causing matches to run excessively long
Constant discourse about VAR decisions often overshadowing the match itself, and tarnishing the reputation of the league
Erosion of trust and reputation, with VAR fuelling completely nonsensical allegations of corruption

However, they now argue the practice has caused “numerous negative consequences”.Wolves also claim those consequences are “damaging the relationship between fans and football” as well as “undermining the value of the Premier League brand”.Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Premier League said: “The Premier League can confirm it will facilitate a discussion on VAR with our clubs at the annual general meeting next month.”Clubs are entitled to put forward proposals at shareholders’ meetings and we acknowledge the concerns and issues around the use of VAR.READ MORE SUN STORIES”However, the league fully supports the use of VAR and remains committed, alongside PGMOL, to make continued improvements to the system for the benefit of the game and fans.”VAR: The great debate
    Martin Lipton’s pro VAR view
FAST forward 12 months to May 18, 2025.
After 89 minutes at Molineux, Wolves, needing to win their last game of the season to stay up, are beating Manchester United, who require a point for Champions League football.
A ball over the top sends Rasmus Hojlund racing away. The flag stays down. Hojlund scores. Wolves are relegated.
And on the way home, the dejected Wolves fans see the still image on their phones.
Hojlund was 2ft offside. No question. A shocker. It means at least a year in the Championship, £100million income drop, a firesale of the squad. While United bank an extra £50m.
But it’s OK. Every  one of those fans, plus smiling boss Gary O’Neil and the  Wolves board, will line up to say: “No worries. It’s what we voted for. Rough with the smooth.”
Yes. And I’ve got a bridge to Ireland to sell you.
    Dan King’s anti VAR view
THREE cheers and a hearty slap on the back for Wolves chairman Jeff Shi.
For mentioning the unmentionable,  for speaking commonsense to deaf ears, for proposing that VAR should be scrapped.
Shi is doomed to failure. His suggestion is unlikely to even go to a vote at next month’s Premier League AGM.
And if it does get that far, it has a cat in hell’s chance of receiving the two-thirds majority required to carry such a radical proposal. But in one statement on Wednesday, Shi proved that he will be the brightest man in that meeting room.
He claimed VAR ‘has led to numerous unintended negative consequences that are damaging the relationship between fans and football, and undermining the value of the Premier League brand’.
And he is absolutely spot on.
The argument against VAR is wide-ranging and yet completely basic.
If you believe that football is a sport, to be enjoyed in all its spontaneous, high-tempo glory, then you are against VAR.
If you believe that football is a business, that it is far more important than a mere game, that forensic evidence must be applied, that we must reach the closest point to ultimate justice at all costs — and if you also believe that match-going supporters are irrelevant — then you are in favour of VAR.
