Chelsea 3 Liverpool 1: Cole Palmer ruins Reds’ title party and boosts Champions League hopes after guard of honour booed

His first goal since January 14.And were it not for Nicolas Jackson’s three offside offences, the ending to the game would have been even more comfortable for The Blues. The contrast between Liverpool of last weekend and this was worth the entry price alone. Last weekend they went behind to Tottenham, only to fire up and hit five in response. That was never going to happen here with a team entirely switched off from the task in front of them.So much so that the formidable defence which has played such a part in this record-equalling title triumph self-combusted with a goal would not have looked out of place had it been conceded by hungover Sunday park players.Virgil van Dijk’s industrial clearance attempt from a yard off his line struck Jarell Quansah just a yard away and rebounded back over the line. Back in October they snatched a 2-1 victory over Maresca’s team at the same point of the weekend. But it was widely agreed they got away with it that day and found Maresca’s tactics and players particularly awkward to overcome before coming away with three points. That’s got to be a positive going forwards for a young Chelsea team that has found the consistency needed to achieve the things Liverpool have this season hard to come by.This win, however wonky it is, is the fourth in a row for Maresca. Brentford 4 Man Utd 3: Red Devils’ youngest ever Prem side battered by Bees despite late comeback in seven-goal thriller

Incredibly, Amorim is still stuck on just six top-flight wins.In most other seasons, United would be in a relegation fight so they are lucky the bottom three teams are so rubbish. At least the club’s fans have a Europa League final to look forward to as surely they cannot mess up their semi-final second leg against Bilbao.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLWith one eye on Thursday’s game, Amorim made eight changes from the win in Spain. With an average age of 22 years and 270 days, this was the third youngest team to start a Premier League game. And at 17 years and 156 days,  striker Chido Obi became United’s youngest Premier League starter. But Brentford, an outstanding, intelligent and physically imposing team, were the last team any manager should play the kids against. After another impressive season, it remains a mystery why so-called bigger clubs are not going for manager Thomas Frank. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERSMaybe, United should not have been so snobby and moved for the Danish coach when Erik ten Hag was sacked in October.A Europa League success would be a big triumph for United and hand them a passport back to the Champions League.’How can you sell him?’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasts Man Utd for Scott McTominay’s transfer to NapoliBut aside from the cash which United would earn, it is debatable whether the club would really want to play in the Champions League as this current squad could end up getting humiliated. But on a lousy day for Amorim, he also suffered an injury blow with Matthijs de Ligt going off with an injury after the second goal.Luke Shaw, given the captain’s armband, nearly suffered one of the most embarrassing moments of his career in what would have been a spectacular own goal but there was lots of spin on the ball and his header went wide.A relieved Shaw allowed himself a brief smile although that was nothing compared to the grin on the face of team-mate Mount a few minutes later. Mason Mount opened the scoring after 14 minutesCredit: GettyLuke Shaw got Brentford back into it with an own goal soon afterCredit: AFPGarnacho was at the heart of the move down the left and his low cross was superbly dispatched into the corner by Mount whose only other United goal came at the same stadium 13 months ago. This was Mount’s first start since the Manchester derby in December and it is an understatement to say his United career has been stop-start.In the crowd was England manager Thomas Tuchel although considering Mount has not played for his country since the World Cup quarter-final defeat to France in 2022, he will not yet be thinking about a Three Lions return quite yet. While Shaw got lucky earlier, he was not quite so fortunate as Brentford scored the goal they had been threatening.Kevin Schade then ran riot with two goals, one in the 33rd minute and the other in the 70thCredit: ReutersYoanne Wissa compounded United’s misery with a 74th minute effortCredit: PAUnited failed to clear a long throw from Michael Kayode, the Brentford defender raced into the area, beat Harry Amass to a header and Mikkel Damsgaard’s strike took a heavy deflection of Shaw past a wrong-footed Bayindir.Every time Brentford booted the ball into the air they looked like scoring and their second was down to more weak defending. De Ligt was on the floor after suffering the injury in a challenge with Wissa but the referee was never going to stop play as it was not a head injury.United failed to deal with Christian Norgaard’s cross with Schade getting between Patrick Dorgu and Tyler Fredricson to plant a header past Bayindir.Alejandro Garnacho gave United a glimmer of hope with a wonder strikeCredit: GettyAmad Diallo then came off the bench for United’s third but it was too little, too lateCredit: AFPLeny Yoro and Amad Diallo replaced Shaw and Dorgu at half-time while there was a mixture of jeers and applause when Christian Eriksen – who played for Brentford in 2022 – replaced Mount just before the hour.Although Odi did not see too much of the ball, he had a terrific chance to score on his big day but was denied by a stunning block by Norgaard.Amass, suffered a torrid day at the back, wasted a good chance and soon after, Schade put the game out of United’s reach with a far post header from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross.Schade was given a standing ovation when he was replaced but the goals kept on coming with Mbeumo squaring for Wissa who had a tap in.Read More on The SunGarnacho scored a decent goal from outside the area and in the fifth minute of injury time, Diallo fired a shot through the legs of home keeper Mark Flekken. While the scoreline made the game look close it was anything but. Copy linkCopiedSuper SundayAfternoon and welcome to the headline fixture of this weekend as Champions League-chasing Chelsea take on newly-crowned champions Liverpool at the Bridge. It’s a fixture that, regardless of where the two are, still gets the blood pumping. Even more so, with quite a bit on the line for the hosts. Champions League football has long been in short in West London. Three years out of the competition has sparked frustrations from supporters and has diminished the credibility of the fairly new ownership group. This year has prested the best opportunity, especially given the addition of a fifth place – which the Blues currently occupy. Those worries are no more for Liverpool. Concerns about how Arne Slot would adapt to English football have been answered resoundingly and are firmly back on their perch after last week’s coronation as league champions. 82 points and continuing. It’s just about showing the rest why they are champions. It’s Blue v Red. South v North. Chels v Pool. Kick-off at 4.30pmCopy linkCopied More

Brentford vs Man Utd LIVE SCORE: Amad strikes after Flekken error as United fight back in closing stages – updates

MANCHESTER UNITED suffered a 4-3 loss at Brentford – despite a late fight back.United played their youngest-ever Prem line-up with an average age of 22, with one eye on next week’s Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao.Kevin Schade was on the double to put the Bees 4-1 up before goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo saw United put on a late comeback.TV/Stream: Not available to watch in the UKBrentford team: Flekken; Kayode, Collins, Van de Berg, Lewis-Potter; Norgaard; Damsgaard, Yarmolyuk; Mbeumo, Wissa, SchadeMan Utd team: Bayindir; De Ligt, Ferdricson, Shaw; Dorgu, Ugarte, Mainoo, Amass; Garnacho, Mount; ObiCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSFollow our live blog below…Amorim praises United kidsRuben Amorim believes the Manchester United future is bright after his young players fought bravely at Brentford. The Portuguese coach made eight changes as he named the third youngest Premier League starting line-up of all time. But despite falling to a 4-3 defeat, the United boss thought there were a lot of positives to take from the display.I liked (the performance of) the young kids. I liked how we controlled the game without many occasions to score. In the first 30 minutes, we struggle with set pieces, but we already knew we didn’t have the height to fight it. In second half we are near the draw and we suffer two goals like we did in the beginning when we suffer one and let it go. We fought, in the end we lost, but there are good things for the future.Ruben AmorimBBCCopy linkCopiedUnited’s youngsters give their allWith an average age of 22 years and 270 days, Manchester United’s starting XI against Brentford was the third-youngest any club has ever sent out for a Premier League match.Ruben Amorim’s team included 20-year-olds Tyler Fredricson, Patrick Dorgu, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, 18-year-old Harry Amass, and 17-year-old Chido Obi.Only Middlesbrough against Fulham in May 2006 (20y 181d) and Arsenal versus Portsmouth in May 2009 (22y 237d) have named younger sides.Copy linkCopiedWissa kinda magicYoane Wissa’s fabulous season looks set to go all the way to the end.The Brentford striker has scored in four consecutive Premier League appearances for the very first time following his tap in today. It takes him on to a total of 18 Premier League goals for the campaign, and level with Bryan Mbeumo.Only Ivan Toney with 20 in 2022-23 has ever netting more in a Premier League season for the Bees.Copy linkCopiedMatch stats from the GtechManchester United have lost a Premier League match in which they led for the first time this season. It means all 20 clubs have now done so in the 2024-25 competition. It’s only the third time in a single Premier League campaign that every side has lost at least one game in which they were ahead following 2015-16 and 2020-21.Copy linkCopiedSunday’s Premier League ResultsWith Chelsea still to host champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, here’s how today’s games have finished so far:Brentford 4-3 Man UtdBrighton 1-1 NewcastleWest Ham 1-1 TottenhamChelsea v Liverpool (4.30pm)Copy linkCopiedFull time – Brentford 4-3 Man UtdBrentford hold on to win by a scoreline that’s not nearly as exciting as it sounds.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-3 Man Utd90+7. Bryan Mbeumo is playing keep ball in the corner.Seconds remain now.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-3 Man Utd90+5. Amad Diallo sets up a grandstand finish! With injury time ticking down, the substitute finds room on the right to come inside and get his shot away. The shot takes a nick off Sepp van den Berg, but it shouldn’t be enough to trouble Mark Flekken, let alone beat him.Inexplicably, it sneaks through his legs, into the net, and once again Manchester United will scrap desperately in the final seconds of a contest for a 4-4 draw. Copy linkCopiedWell, well, well…Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-2 Man Utd90. There will be seven minutes of stoppage time.Is that enough for Manchester United to mount a rescue? Surely not.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-2 Man Utd89. Brilliant footwork from Chido Obi inside the area takes him away from three Brentford players and presents his best opportunity of the afternoon. However, as he drills his strike goalwards, Sepp van den Berg throws himself at the shot to block brilliantly.Great football all round.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-2 Man Utd87. There’s finally been another goal elsewhere.Having had two penalties overturned by VAR, Newcastle finally get one that sticks; Alexander Isak takes advantage and the Toon are level at Brighton.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-2 Man Utd85. In fairness to the travelling Manchester United fans, they haven’t stopped singing all afternoon. It’s been the visiting supporters making all the noise despite the score.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-2 Man Utd82. Alejandro Garnacho has another stunner to add to his collection, but I’m not sure he’s going to be too bothered about it.The Argentine tricks his way down the left before cutting inside beyond Bryan Mbeumo and playing a one-two with Christian Eriksen. Receiving the ball back on the half-turn, he moves immediately for goal and lashes one into the far corner from 25 yards.Brilliant!Copy linkCopiedConsolation!Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-1 Man Utd77. Another change is made by Ruben Amorim for what it’s worth.Victor Lindelof is on for the youngster Tyler Fredricson.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 4-1 Man Utd74. It goes from bad to worse for Manchester United, but for Brentford it gets better and better and better. It’s so simple too with the Bees cutting the visitors apart on the right.A pass is slipped in behind for the excellent Michael Kayode, who draws Altay Bayindir before squaring for Yoane Wissa to roll in.There’s a VAR check while two potential offsides are checked, but the green light is eventually given and Brentford fans can celebrate four home goals against Manchester United once again.Copy linkCopiedIt’s four!Copy linkCopiedBrentford 3-1 Man Utd72. That goal was Schade’s last involvement of the game. The two-goal winger comes off to a rapturous reception from the home fans, and it’s the welcome sight of Rico Henry that replaces him.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 3-1 Man Utd70. Three goals for Brentford, and surely all three points now!Kevin Schade has his second of the game, and it’s a second header for the German too.Manchester United switch off after thinking they have dealt with the Bees’ latest attack. But the home side win back possession, and when Bryan Mbeumo whips a cross over from the right, Schade has peeled away from his marker brilliantly to nod home.Copy linkCopiedWe need to talk about Kevin!Copy linkCopiedPremier League latest scoresThere have been no goals since half-time in the afternoon’s three top-flight fixtures:Brentford 2-1 Man UtdBrighton 1-0 NewcastleWest Ham 1-1 TottenhamCopy linkCopiedBrentford 2-1 Man Utd63. It appears Brentford are now fully prepared to concede possession and do their attacking on the counter. While Thomas Frank’s teams are good at playing without the ball, it seems odd given how threatening they were looking on the front foot.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 2-1 Man Utd60. Eriksen’s arrival has certainly given the visitors a lift. Such is his ability, the United sub is finding space that few others were managing before, and from one on the right, he goes looking for Chido Obi.The cross is teasing but has too much pace on it for the youngster to connect.Copy linkCopiedBrentford 2-1 Man Utd58. The game is opening up a bit now.Van den Berg almost pokes in a Brentford third at one end, only for United to expose their hosts seconds later at the other.Eriksen tries his luck with a shot that is blocked, and then Chido Obi is also denied by some brave defending.Copy linkCopied More
