Chelsea face missing out on Marcus Thuram as Barcelona ‘scout striker ahead of summer transfer’

CHELSEA are facing an uphill battle to sign Marcus Thuram after Barcelona sent scouts to watch him, according to reports. Thuram, 25, is out of contract in the summer and consequently represents a cut-price option in a heavily inflated January market.

Chelsea are one of a number of sides who have been linked with a move for the Frenchman, who can play as a winger or a striker.
However, Barcelona are understood to be taking the most keen look at him.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the club’s present financial situation is restricting them from being able to freely navigate the market.
Therefore, they have been seeking cheaper alternatives – a profile Thuram fits due to the nature of his contract.

The report indicates the Spanish giants have sent scouts to watch the Borussia Monchengladbach star, with “favourable” reports being returned.
Thuram is typically deployed through the centre in Germany, but during the World Cup he made his impact off the bench coming from the wing, showcasing his versatility.
With him thought to be available for just under £10million as well, the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool have all retained an interest.
But each of these clubs seem to have transfer target priorities which, for now at least, lie elsewhere.

Gary Neville questions ‘radical’ new Man Utd wage cap and fears it will ruin Mbappe, Bellingham and Rice transfers

GARY NEVILLE has hit out at Manchester United’s new £200,000-a-week salary cap.The Red Devils are reportedly preparing to introduce a “Cristiano Ronaldo rule” which will see wages limited.

He says that will rule out signing the likes of Kylian MbappeCredit: Getty
The club’s most recent annual wage bill was around £228m – the biggest in the Premier League.
Before Ronaldo’s departure to Al-Nassr, he was earning a staggering £480,000-a-week, while keeper David de Gea is still raking in £375k every seven days.
However, chief executive Richard Arnold, director of football John Murtough and manager Erik ten Hag are set to employ a squad-wide pay cap in order to avoid a culture of jealousy in the dressing room.
But ex-United captain Neville completely disagrees with that policy and says they should not be introducing “radical policies” while the Glazer family are looking to sell the club.

The former England defender and now Sky Sports pundit tweeted: “Not sure why any radical new policy is being introduced IF new owners are imminent.
“Capping wages is a radical policy. Rules out [Declan] Rice, [Jude] Bellingham and others in that bracket.
“Any new owners would probably want to enter the running for these types and probably Mbappe as well. 200k won’t get you Rice or Bellingham let alone [Kylian] Mbappe!”
Bruno Fernandes signed a new five-year deal back in April and is believed to be earning within the pay bracket.

Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Casemiro are said to be on similar salaries.
And the Man Utd players have wage sanctions written into their contracts for failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Luke Shaw, whose deal expires in 2024, will reportedly be offered a wage packet in the same range.
But it could spell trouble for De Gea, whose contract expires in June. More

Chel;sea’s fifth highest earner is summer signing Wesley Fofana, with the 21-year-old scooping £200k-a-week after his £70m move from Leicester.

This comes hours after the Portugal ace was filmed by El Chiringuito TV as the passenger in a black Mercedes as he made his journey to complete the transfer.
But the deal still reportedly rests on one major condition being met.
The struggling Blues joined the race for the Atletico forward to stun Arsenal and Manchester United.
They will pay a £10million loan fee to bring Felix, 23, to Stamford Bridge for the remainder of the season.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
According to Marca, the paperwork is almost complete to confirm the transfer, with NO option to make the switch permanent.
However, the Spanish newspaper insist Atletico will not sign off the contracts just yet though.
That is because the LaLiga giants will demand Felix extends his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano by an extra 12 months to 2027 before he is allowed to leave on loan.
The Portuguese star has three-and-a-half years left on his current deal but extending it will help Atleti balance the books.

Should Felix agree to the new contract, the move to Chelsea will go ahead after he snubbed interest from the Emirates and Old Trafford.
Atletico Madrid are keen to let the Portuguese forward go because he has made it clear he no longer wants to play for the club and keeping an unhappy player around could disrupt the dressing room harmony.
Felix joined Atletico from Benfica for £112m in 2019 but the former Golden Boy winner has not progressed as well as many predicted.

He has managed 34 goals in 131 appearances but did help Atleti win LaLiga in 2020-21 then was named the club’s player of the year last season.
On the international stage, Felix has 28 senior caps for Portugal with four goals, including one at the Qatar World Cup in the dramatic win over Ghana.
It is not exactly clear where Graham Potter would want to deploy him in the Chelsea team due to his versatility in attack.
One option could see him go in as a No9 and play up front on his own but the 5ft 11ins forward would likely prefer to play either slightly deeper, wider or with a strike partner.

Tottenham hold talks with PSG owners over ‘£1 BILLION investment in club’ as Qataris target move to Premier League

QATAR is ready to invest in a Prem club for the first time. And PSG chief Nasser Al Khelaifi has already held “several conversations” with Daniel Levy over taking a potential stake in Tottenham.

Sources close to Al Khelaifi have confirmed his meetings with Levy to discuss possible next steps have taken place as part of a change in investment policy in the wake of the World Cup.
Those close to Levy claim that he met with Al-Khelaifi purely “as friends”.
But according to the Telegraph, QSI are mulling over an offer.
They claim that industry specialists believe that QSI have been presented with the possibility of buying a 25 per cent stake in Spurs, in exchange for just shy of £1bn.
    READ MORE TRANSFER NEWS
QSI’s global ambitions had been put on hold in the run-up to the World Cup but with that now out of the way, Qatar is ready to go big.
The investment fund bought a 21.7 per cent stake in Portuguese outfit Braga – at a cost of £70m.
QSI also launched a new global tour for the growing racket sport of padel – a hybrid of tennis and squash.
But now QSI IS taking aim at the Prem – and the discussions with Levy are the first signal of a likely new strategy.

As the Qataris do not have any current Prem club stake, QSI could theoretically buy Spurs, Liverpool or Manchester United – both officially on the market – outright.
However, Uefa competition and ownership rules would restrict them from having a stake above the 30 per cent threshold of any club competing against PSG in the Champions League.

Unless they were to sell off PSG – which is understood not to be even contemplated at this stage – that would mean only a minority share of a Big Six club.
They could even invest, as minority owners, in multiple clubs with the expectation of continuing long-term growth of the Prem as the world’s pre-eminent domestic league.
Yet even a 25 per cent share in Tottenham would mean upwards of £700m being invested in the North London club – opening the possibility of a significant transfer budget.
That would still be dependent on the new Uefa spending regulations capping clubs at splashing out 90 per cent of revenues each year, set to be reduced to 70 per cent over the next three seasons.
But while no firm decisions or target clubs have been set,  the Qataris believe the current weak value of sterling on the international markets means this is a huge investment opportunity that should not be passed up. More
