Tom Heaton lifts lid on Erik ten Hag’s ‘brilliant’ tough guy approach to Man Utd stars that saw Rashford axed

ERIK TEN HAG’S tough guy approach is the key to Manchester United’s hot run of form. That is the view of goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who made his full Red Devils debut in Tuesday’s 3-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Charlton.

It was United’s eighth victory on the trot — a run which Heaton claims is built on the discipline instilled by boss Ten Hag.
The keeper said: “He has brought a clear messaging, clear lines of what’s acceptable and what’s not.
“Responsibility on everyone, the professional side of it and, when you cross it, he’s there to put you back in your place.
“Off the back of that we have been a little bit more successful.

“Nobody is getting carried away, it’s one game at a time. But when results are improving and everything is moving forward, everyone is on the bandwagon pushing for that and wanting that.
“So that has been a key feature, his strength in what’s acceptable and what’s not acceptable and carrying that through.
“He has been clear in his messaging. He is very direct, which is brilliant for players — you know where you stand and your responsibilities.”
There have been some high-profile examples of that, not least in the manager’s dealings with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ten Hag was not afraid to drop the Portuguese superstar and  — after his interview with Piers Morgan criticising the boss and the club — Ronaldo saw his contract cancelled.
In-form Marcus Rashford has not been immune either as he was dropped for the New Year’s Eve trip to Wolves after arriving late for a team meeting.
Ten Hag got the response he wanted as Rashford came off the bench to grab the winner in the middle of a run of six scoring games in a row with Tuesday’s brace the latest of those.
Heaton said: “It really does make a difference, when there is a consequence for the players, a discipline. You know not to cross the line, otherwise you’ll be out.
Marcus Rashford has responded well to Ten Hag’s tough love and scored twice against CharltonCredit: AP
“Marcus’s response in that game was absolutely incredible. That’s the sort of thing it generates when it’s all moving that direction. For me, it does translate to the pitch.”
Heaton, 36, may seem on the periphery at United but his experience has been leant on by Ten Hag while team-mate Bruno Fernandes recently referred to him as a leader.
The keeper added: “I was captain at previous clubs and I do quite enjoy that side of it.” More

How Chelsea could line up against Fulham with injury crisis but will Joao Felix be cleared to play in time?

CHELSEA are faced with an injury crisis as they head to Fulham for a London derby.Graham Potter’s side make the short trip to Craven Cottage on Thursday hoping to bounce back from two defeats in four days to Manchester City.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will return to the squad after missing the trip to the Etihad, but Chelsea are still without several other key players.
Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling will also miss the game.
Potter said: “Pierre’s fine so he’ll be in the squad for the game tomorrow.
“Christian’s going to be out for a couple of months we think. Hopefully it will be less, but that’s the timeframe there.

“We think Raheem will be out for less time than Christian. We’re still evaluating the actual extent of it, but hopefully it will be less than that.
“Reece was out on the grass today, not training with the team but training on his own.
“N’Golo’s had his first couple of days out training on his own as well, although he has still got a long, long way to go before he is back fully.”
Potter is yet to name an unchanged team since becoming manager and is therefore likely to shuffle his pack once again.

With Edouard Mendy out injured, Kepa Arrizabalaga will keep his place in goal.
Meanwhile, the back four in the Prem game against City performed well, so Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly Marc Cucurella are in line to keep their places.
Into midfield, Denis Zakaria should return after he dropped to the bench on Sunday and could be joined by Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount in the middle.
Going forward, it’s touch and go whether Joao Felix has been registered in time to play.
The Portugal star is set to have a work permit meeting on Thursday, while Potter said: “It was good to get him in training today and we will see about playing on Thursday.”
Providing he is eligible, he could start the game considering he played 72 minutes against Barcelona last weekend and is match fit.
If Potter doesn’t throw him straight into the action, Aubameyang could lead the line and be supported up front by Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz. More

Meanwhile West Ham have issued a hands-off warning to the Molineux club, who would love to add Michail Antonio to Lopetegui’s lengthy January shopping list.
In the meantime, Wolves have made a third approach to Nice about 29-year-old Lemina.
Lopetegui desperately needs a tried and trusted Premier League midfielder with Boubacar Traore sidelined for up to two months, while Joao Moutinho missed Saturday’s FA Cup tie through injury.
Wolves have already had bids of £4.4million and £5m knocked back by Nice, who are holding out for their £10m valuation.

Now Wolves may be forced to bite the bullet and double their offer for Lemina if they are to sign the Premier League ready midfield ace they desperately need.
However, they will need to show more patience in their long-running pursuit of Wan-Bissaka.
Wolves are prepared to pay £25m for the full-back who cost United £50m from Crystal Palace in 2019.
But Wan-Bissaka has impressed Ten Hag since the World Cup break, and with fellow right-back Diogo Dalot currently injured the United boss is stalling as he weighs up his options.

If Wolves are to get their man, it’s likely Lopetegui will have to play the long game and wait until close to the end of the January transfer window if he is to get his man.
However, the former Real Madrid and Spain boss looks to have missed out on one major target.
West Ham have made it clear they have no intention of selling a proven match-winner of Michail Antonio’s calibre to a rival club just one point below them in the table as they try to avoid relegation. More

London rivals Chelsea are also targetting Mudryk, but according to his social media, the 22-year-old would prefer a move to the Emirates over Stamford Bridge.
The Gunners will hope that if they can land Mudryk that he can help add some firepower in their hunt for a Premier League title.
Following injury to Gabriel Jesus, Arteta’s side are short in attack, despite Eddie Nketiah’s current purple patch of form.
This season Mudryk has netted ten times in all competitions, including three in the Champions League. More

And the Blues are willing to let his deal run down as they prioritise deals for N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount, according to The Telegraph.
