Erik ten Hag reveals why Man Utd went all out to sign Wout Weghorst and says he will surprise fans

ERIK TEN HAG has revealed why Manchester United swooped to sign Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley.Weghorst joined the Red Devils on Friday and was in the stands to watch the 2-1 win over Manchester City today.

The 30-year-old could make his United debut in Wednesday’s trip to Crystal Palace.
Weghorst had been on loan at Besiktas for the season, but United forked out £2.5million in compensation to the Turkish club to cut the move short.
United will also pay Burnley around £2.6m to take him on loan.
And his fellow Dutchman Ten Hag, who has tracked the striker for some time, has revealed exactly why the Red Devils went all out to sign him.

The gaffer said: “He is adding a type of striker we don’t have in this moment and I’ve known him for a long time and I’ve followed him through the leagues.”
Ten Hag added: “He’s a goalscorer definitely but also a type who will work for the team, who is a really good pressing player in defending, so he can contribute [there] as well.”
The United boss went on to say that Weghorst will surprise fans with his counter-attacking speed – despite his 6ft 6in frame.
Ten Hag continued: “He’s a box player who can also play counter-attack, you won’t expect it always when you see his profile but he’s a really good counter player.

“I’ve seen many goals, especially in the Bundesliga where they play a lot of counter there, and he was really effective.”
Weghorst will also bring qualities off the pitch in terms of his personality, according to Ten Hag.
He added: “I never only look at a player and his technical skills, I look at the personality so the total human being and I think he will contribute extra to that winning attitude.” More

Man Utd 2 Man City 1: Rashford scores winner after controversial equaliser to complete incredible derby fightback

PEP GUARDIOLA lost the plot and Manchester City simply lost in the most astonishing and unbelievable of Old Trafford derbies.Little more than ten minutes from time City, for all they had been sub standard, were a goal to the good thanks to Jack Grealish’s header three minutes after coming off the bench.

Yet two goals in three manic minutes turned the whole thing on its head and proved that United might just have a say in the title outcome themselves.
But it came with a huge dose of controversy, as Guardiola – and the entire City team – were left raging at United’s equaliser from Bruno Fernandes.
Marcus Rashford was clearly a yard offside when Casemiro sent a searching long ball into the City half and was rightly flagged as such.
Yet he didn’t touch the ball, allowing Fernandes instead to clip it over Ederson for the leveller – and immediately he urged ref Stuart Attwell to consult with his linesman.

And when VAR official Michael Oliver double checked, Old Trafford went wild as he signalled a goal.
City rightly claimed that Manuel Akanji couldn’t get to the ball simply because of Rashford’s presence regardless of whether he touched it.
Strictly speaking they were right, too. But by the rules of the game, the goal had to stand and on the touchline Guardiola was raging.
Just as he was minutes later when Erling Haaland tumbled in the box and he claimed the Norwegian’s legs had been taken by Casemiro.

The Brazilian had, in fact, got a crucial toe to the ball and saved the day – and by then United were already in front.
No surprises for the scorer either – Rashford, once again the man on the spot, scoring his eighth goal in a seventh successive game.
Substitute Alejandro Garnacho was the creator, finally getting a cross into the box at the second attempt.
And there was Rashford to poke past Ederson from bang in front for the winner.
City, for all they had good cause to feel aggrieved at United’s leveller, could only blame themselves too.
Once again they were poor, and Arsenal could find themselves with an eight point advantage after tomorrow’s trip to Spurs.

Man Utd player ratings: Rashford shines again despite injury scare as Fernandes nets controversial finish

MANCHESTER UNITED came from behind to claim a 2-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester City on Saturday. After a solid first-half display, the Red Devils found themselves at a disadvantage when Jack Grealish gave City the lead following a fantastic cross from Kevin De Bruyne.

But, Bruno Fernandes levelled the score with a controversial finish just minutes before Marcus Rashford fired home the winner.
The sensational result sees Man Utd move just one point behind their rivals.
Here’s how SunSport’s Emillia Hawkins rated the performance.
    David De Gea – 6
The Spaniard didn’t have too much to do throughout the game thanks to the defensive line in front of him, but when he was called upon he reacted well.
    Read More on Man Utd
There wasn’t much he could’ve done to prevent Grealish’s goal in the second half, with De Bruyne picking out the England international with a clever pass.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7
Wan-Bissaka did well both defensively and when carrying the ball out from the back.
He played a key, yet understated role in United’s back four.
    Raphael Varane – 7
The Frenchman did an exceptional job to keep Man City target man Erling Haaland quiet throughout.
    Most read in Football
    Luke Shaw – 7
For a natural left-back, Shaw certainly did not look out of place alongside Varane in the middle of United’s defence.
The England international put on a solid performance to stop City’s flow going forward.
    Tyrell Malacia – 7
Malacia put on a strong defensive display, limiting the creativity of Riyad Mahrez on the wing.
    Casemiro – 8
United’s £70million summer signing certainly justified his price tag with another solid performance in midfield.
Alongside fellow Brazilian Fred, Casemiro was able to shut De Bruyne and Rodri out of the game which limited City’s creativity.
    Fred – 8
A stand-out performance from the Brazilian. He did an excellent job to keep De Bruyne quiet throughout the first half while also providing an attacking threat going forward.
But, City began to take control of the game in the early stages of the second half, making it much harder for Fred to keep the Belgian at bay.
    Christian Eriksen – 6
Eriksen was able to unlock the Man City defence with a few outstanding passes during the first half, but he struggled to make as much of an impact after the break and was substituted with 20 minutes to go.
    Bruno Fernandes – 7
Far from his best performance, Fernandes struggled to offer much of an attacking threat on the right wing.
He was also lucky to escape a booking for a number of rash challenges.
Nevertheless, he was the man to level the score, albeit in controversial fashion, late in the game.
    Anthony Martial – 6
We didn’t see too much of the Frenchman as he was bizarrely hauled off at half time, but he did pose a threat to City’s defence when he was on the pitch.
The Red Devils appeared to lose their spark when Martial made way for Antony at the break.
    Marcus Rashford – 8
Rashford struggled to make the most of his chances throughout the first half and his game was almost cut dramatically short when he went to ground with a suspected hip injury in the 40th minute.
But, he came out for the second half all guns blazing and secured all three points for his team with a composed finish in the final 10 minutes.
    Substitutes
    Antony (For Martial, 54) – 6
He didn’t offer too much up front after replacing Martial at the break.
    Alejandro Garnacho (For Eriksen, 71) – 7
The young star looked to cause problems as soon as he was introduced in the second half.
He posed a threat to City’s defence while on the ball going forward and claimed the assist for Rashford’s winner.
    Harry Maguire (For Rashford, 90+2)
No time to make an impact after being introduced.

    Wout’s the one
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag revealed why he signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley.
Weghorst, who watched the Manchester derby from the stands, cut his loan stint at Besiktas short and will spend the rest of the season at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag said: “He is adding a type of striker we don’t have in this moment and I’ve known him for a long time and I’ve followed him through the leagues.”
The Dutchman added: “He’s a goalscorer definitely but also a type who will work for the team, who is a really good pressing player in defending, so he can contribute [there] as well”

    Fer having a laugh
Manchester United stars Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes struggled to hold back their smiles when asked about their controversial equaliser.
Both were quizzed about the incident and let out little laughs, though Fernandes defended the decision to allow the goal.
The playmaker said: “I was facing the goal, Marcus probably saw I was in a better position.
“I didn’t know if either of us was offside. He didn’t make any influence on the defenders. It is what it is”

    Casemiro stands out
Manchester United star Casemiro stood out once more with a stunning performance at Old Trafford.
The Brazil international ran United’s midfield against Manchester City.
And as the heat map shows, the midfielder was everywhere.
    More below:

    Erik ten Hag speaks
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, on the other hand, insists Bruno Fernandes’ goal correctly stood.
Ten Hag told BT Sport: “The first half we played very well. We defended very well. We were proactive, with good opportunities on the break.
“At half-time I was very happy with that, though we should have been 1-0 up. After that it changed, we had to sub [Anthony] Martial and that changed the game.
“We were not proactive any more, and just before I wanted to change, they scored. But the spirit in the team is so huge.
“The belief is there, that the game is 90 minutes and they can fight back. We are in a good direction but there is still a long way to go.
“It’s a confusing moment for the opponent. But if you follow the rules, he [Rashford] didn’t touch the ball, he was not interfering and it’s a goal. Bruno came from the back, I could see that from the other side”

    Pep Guardiola speaks
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insists Manchester United’s equaliser shouldn’t have stood as Marcus Rashford was offside in the build-up.
Guardiola told BT Sport: “We played really good. They are an incredible threat in their transitions, I congratulate the team. They run behind us and punished us in the transitions.
“Rashford was offside, he distracted our keeper and distracted our central defenders. The rule is the rule but I know how we play.
“The second half was really good. We missed a little bit up front, we were a little bit disconnected, but we made a fantastic game.
“I don’t care about the Premier League or the Carabao Cup, we cannot win. We have won a lot so it is not a problem. Problem is we have performed like we have done. Today we performed. We focus on Spurs in a few days”

    Bruno Fernandes speaks
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes insists Marcus Rashford wasn’t involved in his controversial equaliser.
Fernandes told BT Sport: “It’s always important to win the game. It doesn’t matter the opponent. All that matters is winning. Great effort from the team.
“I was facing the goal, Marcus saw I was in a better position. I didn’t know if any of us were offside.
“He [Rashford] doesn’t make any influence as there was no-one near him. The only closest [Manchester] City defender was the one closest to me”

Here is what the rules dictate about players getting implicated from an offside position:
“A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:

Interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate orinterfering with an opponent by:
Preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or challenging an opponent for the ball orclearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent ormaking an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

    City fans fuming
Manchester City fans were left enraged after Manchester United were awarded their very controversial equaliser.
With United on the ball, Casemiro delivered a pass into the path of Marcus Rashford, who knew he was offside and although he didn’t touch the ball on his run towards the goal Bruno Fernandes ran onto it and found the back of the net.
City stars argued that goalkeeper Ederson had been pulled out from his goal line due to the England international’s positioning.
Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “Rashford is clearly active in the attack and is offside so no idea how that’s a goal.”
A second fan said: “Understand he doesn’t touch the ball but he literally positions himself to take the ball into his stride then just leaves it. Mental VAR decision.”
A third slammed: “Whoever gave that should be sacked. 100% offside. Linesman always flag when an offside player then goes after the ball, even if a defender has it. Always. Shocking.”
A fourth added: “Baffling that’s not offside.”
A fifth user said: “If Rashford isn’t there, [Manuel] Akanji makes a challenge. Such a simple decision.”
Another added: “How can you take five steps with (the) ball at your feet and NOT be interfering with play?!”

    Cech slams VAR
Chelsea legend Petr Cech put VAR on full blast after Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Manchester City.
United equalised with Bruno Fernandes’ controversial goal as City complained that Marcus Rashford, who was offside, got in the way.
The linesman’s flag went up but VAR overruled that decision and Fernandes’ goal stood.
However, Cech doesn’t seem to agree and claims officials “don’t understand the game”

    Updated Premier League table

City registered five shots but only one of them was on target, which shows how well United’s defence neutralised the Premier League’s leading goalscorer Erling Haaland.
The Red Devils, on the other hand, produced eight shots, half of which were on target.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘doesn’t realise he’s not 25’ and should have tried to help Man Utd youngsters, slams Eric Cantona

OLD TRAFFORD icon Eric Cantona has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo “doesn’t realise” that he’s no longer 25-years-old.Cantona, 56, blasted Ron, 37, for failing to help develop Manchester United’s youngsters.

Ronaldo was sacked by United in NovemberCredit: AFP
The Red Devils sacked Ronaldo in November following his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.
And Cantona reckons Ronaldo is failing to accept that his career is nearing an end.
He told Manchester Evening News: “I think you have two kinds of players at the end of their career. Me, I decided to retire young, that’s another thing.
“And then the one who wants to play and play until the age of 40 years old.

“You have two kind of players: the one who wants to play every game because they still think they’re 25 years old and the ones who realise they are not 25 years old and they are here to help the young players, they know they will not play every game, they know they will play some games.
“But their part is to help the young players. Like (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic still does it with Milan, Ryan Giggs or (Paolo) Maldini when he was in Milan.”
Cantona went on to say Ronaldo should have been more accepting of his role off the bench.
The striker started just four Premier League games before having his contract ripped up after claiming he felt “betrayed” by the club.

Cantona added: “But I think Ronaldo didn’t realise – and he still doesn’t realise – he’s not 25 years old.
“He’s just older and he should have realised that instead of being not happy to play some games, say, ‘OK, I am not 25 years old, I cannot play every game, but I will help the young players and accept that situation and that’s my situation.'”
Ronaldo himself hit out at all young players on the planet in his explosive interview with Morgan.
But he did name Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro as three players he admires at Old Trafford.
He said: “All leagues in the world, the youngest now, they are not the same as my generation. But we cannot blame them because it’s part of life, you know.
“The new generation and the new technologies that distract them for another thing so… but they are not the same.
“They listen but this is why we have two ears, as you listen from one side and they go away from another side.
“It doesn’t surprise me. But in the same way it’s a shame because if they have the best examples in front of your eyes, and if they don’t at least copy what you did, for me, it’s kind of weird, because I remember when I was 18, 19, 20, I always looked to see the best players in Van Nistelrooy, Ferdinand, Roy Keane and Giggs – this is why I have the success that I have and longevity.
“Because I take care of my body, my mentality, my head, because I see these guys and I learn from them.” More
