Arsenal were right to walk away and not overpay for Mudryk… who needs him anyway when we have Smith-Rowe?

MIKEL ARTETA’S Arsenal are sitting eight points clear at the pinnacle of the toughest, most competitive league in Europe, and it seems we Gooners are still able to find something to complain about.Despite dominating the ‘old enemy’ at their place, securing a comfortable win and a clean sheet, some supporters are amazingly still attacking the club.

One person in particular taking flak is Edu, our technical director, for failing to secure Mykhailo Mudryk, who if we are to believe reports was stolen from under our noses by Chelsea.
Arsenal bid twice for this exciting Ukrainian and obviously had a top price in mind, based on their own assessment of a player’s value, and not that of the selling club or the media.
For my money – and thank goodness it isn’t – Edu and Arteta have made the right call.
Mudryk has potential, and current custodians obviously felt they could develop that, but the price, wages and length of contract offered by Chelsea is shocking.

This is what a sensible club would offer for an established world star, not an exciting kid.
The Arsenal fanbase collectively labels Chelsea as classless, lacking in history, being without strategy and nouveau riche on the one hand – and then throw their toys out of their pram when our own club failed to act like them in this instance.
Our fanbase lauded Edu and Arteta for their negotiating stance and the transfer fees agreed for Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Some sections of it are now complaining that we failed to overpay for Mudryk.

Confusing and contradictory bunch, aren’t we?
I think the real underlying truth is born out of anxiety, that whilst riding high, with an exemplary first XI, we have a thin squad, and are one or two key injuries away from our ambitions derailing.
This is entirely valid and understandable, but we have to believe, as I do, that the board and management will have identified more than one target in each position they feel needs additional competition or first-class cover.
Even today, there are reports that Arsenal are talking to Barcelona about Ferran Torres or Raphinha, which I am sure will allay some concerns at least.
The worst-case scenario for many of us at present, is an injury to Eddie Nketiah, while Jesus is still on the sidelines.

It is a genuine worry and one, at present that might see Gabriel Martinelli played centrally, a position, the player himself does not wish to play and one where he has not excelled when asked to fill in previously.
However, the signing of Mudryk would only have provided cover for Martinelli, which we have in Emile Smith Rowe.
It was only in the second half of last season that the Brazilian became the first choice on the left of Arteta’s three-man attack, wrestling the shirt from Smith Rowe, who had finished 20/21 and began the last campaign in that role.
    SMITH-ROWE CAN MAKE INSTANT IMPACT
At that time the Croydon de Bruyne had forced his way into the England squad and had added goals to his game.
In 37 outings last season, about a third of which were off the bench, Smith Rowe hit the back of the net 11 times.
This is a player that we as fans took to our hearts from December 2021 onward, after that Chelsea match, and who along with Bukayo Saka was deemed a player we could build our future around.
Yes, Martinelli has earned his position and Smith Rowe’s injuries have limited him but the club have beencautious with him and he is back, fit and raring to prove his worth to us all over again.
And I for one cannot wait to see his cherubic face and beaming smile celebrating further Arsenal goalsbetween now and the end of the season.
Arteta obviously feels Smith Rowe has a key role to play between now and May, and to coin a phrase used with George and Arsene, Mikel knows!
The likelihood that Mudryk would make an instant impact was probably slim anyway having not played in weeks and coming from a vastly inferior league to the Premier League.
In contrast, the likelihood of a player who has not only played but shone in this league shaking off his rustiness and having a positive impact on Arsenal’s aspirations seem far greater, to me, at least.
The added advantage, keeping our fingers crossed that Nketiah stays fit until Jesus is available, is that Smith Rowe can provide cover, rest and rotation for not only Martinelli, but Saka as well.

He is not exactly the same player as either but is more than capable of playing as a wide playmaker and we know he can score from either flank or arriving late in the area.
He may also be able to offer rest to Granit Xhaka and Martin Odegaard too and I simply cannot wait to see Smith Rowe’s telling contribution which I both predict and expect.

Jose Mourinho takes swipe at former club Chelsea over their £88million signing of Mykhailo Mudryk

Their Prem leaders had seen two bids rejected and Chelsea took advantage by blowing them out of the water after paying Shakhtar Donetsk a whopping £97m.
Former Chelsea boss Mourinho mentioned the move when speaking after his Roma side beat Fiorentina, hours after Mudryk’s arrival in English football was confirmed.
The Special One was asked about his side’s transfer outlook for this month and told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I am not expecting anyone to arrive.
“The director (Tiago Pinto) was very honest and direct, he said things in an interview that a coach usually doesn’t like to hear

“We need to find a solution, we can’t just buy Mudryk for €100m (£87m)!”
Mudryk became Graham Potter’s fourth signing of the month and will be hoping to make his debut against Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.

How Chelsea could line up with Mudryk and Joao Felix after pipping Arsenal to £88million signing

THINGS may be tough for Chelsea at the moment – but a fully fit Blues squad is packed full of talent.Especially after the £88million addition of Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix arriving on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea currently find themselves TENTH in the Premier League table, and ten points off Manchester United in fourth.
But when boss Graham Potter finally has a fit and firing squad, the Blues gaffer will be eyeing a surge up the table.

Potter has been forced to field a makeshift backline in recent weeks.
Reece James and Ben Chilwell are his best options when fit, and either side of Thiago Silva and Wesley Fofana represent a mean looking defence.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has also been out injured.
N’Golo Kante is another sure starter when fit, but the Frenchman has not played since August.
And a front three of Raheem Sterling, Felix and Mudryk would strike fear into the hearts of any defence on the planet.
A fully fit squad could even see the likes of Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Armando Broja, Marc Cucurella and new signing Benoit Badiashile not make the starting line up.

But Sterling is another currently on the treatment table, while Felix is serving a suspension following his red card on debut at Fulham.
So as it stands Potter is dealing with an injury crisis.
It has seen the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Carney Chukwuemeka Conor Gallagher and more given more regular match action.
Young left-back Lewis Hall, 18, has also proven he has plenty of potential for the future.
The Blues edged Crystal Palace 1-0 on Sunday in what was just their third Premier League win in 12 games.
So Potter will be counting down the days until he has a fully fit squad to choose from.
Especially with a crunch Champions League last-16 meeting with Borussia Dortmund looming on the horizon.

Man Utd stars Casemiro and Fred will MISS crunch clash against Arsenal if they get booked against Crystal Palace

ERIK TEN HAG faces a huge selection headache ahead of the game against Crystal Palace. This is because midfield enforcers Casemiro and Fred face being BANNED for the weekend trip to Arsenal if they are booked against Palace.

Casemiro was everywhere against Man City
United make the trip down to Selhurst Park on Wednesday and Ten Hag will be desperate for the Brazilian duo to be on their best behaviour throughout.
They both picked up a yellow card for their efforts in the comeback victory in the Manchester derby – with Casemiro providing an assist for Bruno Fernnandes’ controversial opener.
However, it means both now sit on four yellow cards for the season.
Premier League rules dictate players who receive five yellow cards within the first 19 games of the season will be slapped with a one-game ban.

Following the derby, United have played 18 league games.
And this means Casemiro and Fred face a ban if they are unable to keep out of the referee’s book.
Both players importance to the victory over City cannot be overstated, while Casemiro in particular has been a transformative figure since his arrival at the club.
Indeed, following the 4-0 drubbing at Brentford earlier this season, Casemiro told his agent to tell United chiefs: “I’ll fix this.”

Fred put in a strong performance in the derby
This is exactly what he has done, and it has propelled Ten Hag’s squad into the Champions League spots.
Meanwhile, Fred has been used more as a rotational piece, with this tenacity proving useful to help close out games.
When United last faced Arsenal they ran out 3-1 winners, though both only came off the bench for that game.
The reverse game at Old Trafford has been the Gunners one and only defeat this season, and they are also fresh off the back of victory in the North London derby.
Mikel Arteta’s side currently sit nine points ahead of United, but should the Red Devils beat Palace and Arsenal they will be within three points of the league leaders – albeit with a game in hand.
Given Casemiro and Fred’s influence in big games so far this season, it is logical to feel that getting a result at the Emirates could be dependent on the availability of the pair.
United will also be bolstered by the arrival of Wout Weghorst on loan. More

Man City ‘fail with transfer offer for Argentine wonderkid Maximo Perrone’ with player desperate to play for Guardiola

MANCHESTER CITY have failed with a bid to sign Argentine wonderkid Maximo Perrone. The Premier League champions made an offer but it failed to “seduce” Velez Sarsfield, according to the club’s president Sergio Rapisarda.

The midfielder, 20, is highly rated in Argentina and has also attracted interest from Newcastle United.
However, Rapisarda has revealed that City’s offer was not good enough for him to accept.
Velez Sarsfield, who are bottom of the table in the top tier of Argentine football, are cautious in dealing with Manchester City after the sale of Benjamin Garre back in 2016.
The Argentine club complained that the English champions were trying to persuade Garre to join before he was 16-years-old.

Rapisarda told Velez670: “I have spoken with the people of City, because we already have a precedent.
“They handle themselves that way. They were constantly persuading the boy [Garre].
“There is the clause which the players can execute. He should present a note to Agremiados, AFA and the club that is going to execute the clause.

He added: “The boy, he wants to go. The City coach called him three times, [Javier] Mascherano also persuaded him, which I don’t like.
“The boy loves the coach of that club. We are going to take the risk.
“We are trying to be the best in the transfer and with numbers that favour Velez.” More

Ferguson, 81, stepped down after 26 years in the United hotseat, leaving Moyes with enormous shoes to fill.
But the iconic Red Devils manager initially informed Moyes that he could not tell anyone about his retirement.
Moyes revealed in a visit to Ferguson’s house his fellow Scot informed him that he was retiring and the then Everton boss was the next United manager.
However, Moyes was told to keep news of Ferguson’s retirement, and therefore his new job, a secret from everyone except his wife.

Moyes told The Diary Of A CEO podcast: “The biggest problem I had, is that he said you couldn’t tell anybody that I’m retiring. He said that nobody knows.
“He said tell your wife but no one… so I couldn’t tell my kids, I couldn’t tell my dad, couldn’t tell my dad that I was getting the job, so that for me was how it happened.”
Moyes went on to blast United for the way in which they went about sacking him.
After signing a six-year deal with the club in 2013, he was relieved of his duties in April 2014 with the Red Devils seventh in the Premier League table.

Moyes, 59, said: “I always think you have to give bad news well. You’re the boss, you run a really big business like Manchester United.
“If you’ve got any class or any style, when you’re having to give bad news out, it has to be done in a good way.
“I felt the way I was told (about the sacking) wasn’t done as well as it should’ve been.
“It could’ve been done better and made a lot easier. Looking back now, you think ‘hey, that’s life, get on with it’ but if you’re one of the biggest sports businesses in the world, if not the biggest, you would hope you would do things correctly.”
Moyes went on to say he found out he was being sacked, ten months into his six-year deal, through the media.
And the now West Ham boss doesn’t believe the way United handled sacking him was “right”.
He declared: “I found out about my sacking through the media.

As a long pass floated over to him, Martinelli nonchalantly turned round to control it with his back.
Fiery Tottenham defender Cristian Romero didn’t take kindly to the Brazilian’s cocky move, repeatedly shouting at him for the next minute.
Commentating for Sky Sports, pundit Gary Neville thought that the Argentine would perform retribution on Martinelli.
He claimed that Romero would “kill” Arsenal’s No11.

As it happened there was no crunching 50/50 between the pair.
Martinelli, 21, was also snubbed by Brazil team-mate Richarlison when he tried to shake his hand.
Arsenal fans online were irritated by Neville’s reaction.

Neville, 47, further risked the wrath of Arsenal supporters by claiming that they wouldn’t win the league… and that even Manchester United would catch them.
The former defender said of the Gunners: “They won’t win the league. Manchester City will win the league, and I think Man Utd will finish second, and I know that will annoy Arsenal fans!
“I’d rather Arsenal win the league than Man City. I think it would be absolutely sensational for the Premier League.
“I think about watching the Premier League, we’ve seen City sweep up, apart from Liverpool, over the past five years.
