Aston Villa vs Chelsea LIVE RESULT: Asensio on the double after Jorgensen howler as Villa fight back

ASTON VILLA fought back to defeat Chelsea 2-1 in a thriller at Villa Park.Villa’s January loan signings Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford combined for BOTH goals as Unai Emery’s side picked up all three points.Asensio’s late second of the game came after a howler from Blues’ keeper Filip Jorgensen.CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSFollow our live blog below…That’s all from Villa ParkFinally, some home comforts in the Premier League. After a weekend of six away wins and a draw, Unai Emery’s team finally got a hosting team on the board with a come from behind triumph against Chelsea. And much of it was down to his new loan rangers – as Marcus Rashford and Marcos Asensio combined twice to defeat the Blues. There’s more Premier League football tomorrow, of course – and we’ll be here to cover the action when Newcastle take on Forest, and Man City welcome Liverpool. Thanks for reading, and goodnight.Copy linkCopiedLondoners suffering from post-Xmas BluesIt all looked so good for fans of Chelsea on Christmas morning. As they unwrapped their presents, the Blues sat second in the Premier League and just four points behind leaders Liverpool. The title challenge was on.Since then, the Stamford Bridge club have spiralled – and it started the next day against local rivals Fulham. Two wins in ten since Boxing Day has Chelsea sixth in the table, and a whopping 18 points off the top.Enzo Maresca’s men have dropped 15 points from winning positions this season, and 13 of those have come since that Fulham defeat on December the 26th.Copy linkCopiedMaresca has faith in PalmerIt’s now no goals in five Premier League games for Cole Palmer, but Enzo Maresca isn’t worried about his star man.The Chelsea manager insists that the club are delighted with the form of the 22-year-old despite him wasting a couple of decent opportunities at Villa Park when the visitors were on top.Cole is a top player. Top players always want to win and play an important part but today he could not. He has some great chances that he missed but nothing changes. We are very happy with him.Enzo MarescaSky SportsCopy linkCopiedMomentum shifts at Villa ParkAston Villa barely had a look-in during the opening 20 minutes this evening. But Unai Emery’s team fought back, especially after Marcus Rashford’s half-time introduction, and ultimately deserved their win.Copy linkCopiedYouri welcome for Rashford arrivalYouri Tielemans believes Marcus Rashford can make a huge impact on this Aston Villa side.Speaking after the forward’s cameo from the bench, the Belgian midfielder pointed to the forward’s ability to make things happen when dribbling at opponents.I’m very pleased with the way [Marcus Rashford] is performing now and with the two assists today. He is someone who can threaten everyone one versus one and even one versus two. He is very important for us in the way he plays because he gives us something different on the left-hand side. You could tell today every time he got the ball he was dangerous and hopefully with many more minutes in his legs he will only get better.Youri TielemansSky SportsCopy linkCopiedRashford still singing the BluesHe may be playing for a new team, but Marcus Rashford is still causing Chelsea problems. The 27-year-old set up both of Marco Asensio’s goal this evening which means he has now been directly involved in six goals in nine Premier League home games against Chelsea (four goals and two assists).Only against Arsenal (8) has Rashford registered more goals and assists against in the league.Copy linkCopiedAsensio delighted by Villa responseMarco Asensio paid tribute to the Aston Villa fans after bagging a double that sent them home happy. The Spaniard, on loan from PSG, scored twice as his new team fought back to beat Chelsea, and afterwards he revealed that he believes they are in a good shape for a European push in the final months of the season.I am so happy. The performance from the team was incredible. The atmosphere was top. I want to thank the fans for the effort that we do together. We need to continue but the team is in the right way. I am very happy for my first goals and for the win.Marco AsensioSky SportsCopy linkCopiedFrom Graham Hill at Villa ParkA game to remember for Marco Asensio – one to forget for Filip Jorgensen.Asensio – on loan from PSG – scored his first goals for the club after Enzo Fernandez had given Chelsea an early lead from Pedro Neto’s cross. And Marcus Rashford – a second half sub – played a part in both goals. But the late winner came as Jorgensen allowed an Asensio shot to squirm under his body. He will not want to see that again.Villa took command after the break – although Cole Palmer should have regained the lead for Chelsea only for Ezri Konsa to make a vital clearance.Chelsea really need a proven goalscorer – but Pedro Neto caused problems all evening.Copy linkCopiedMatch stats from Villa ParkAston Villa have now won three matches in the Premier League this season in which they trailed at half-time.It is their joint-most ever in a Premier League season along with the 2007-08 campaign.Copy linkCopiedFull time – Aston Villa 2-1 ChelseaOne down at the break, Aston Villa have rallied to prevail 2-1 at Villa Park.Marco Asensio will make the headlines with his first goals for the club, but so much changed with the half-time introduction of Marcus Rashford. The Manchester United man added intent for Villa’s forward line, and he played his part in both goals by laying them on for his fellow loanee – albeit with help from some slapstick Chelsea defending.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 2-1 Chelsea90+5. Chelsea give up possession in the Villa half, and those in claret and blue pour forward.Leon Bailey leads the charge and fancies his chances as he skips beyond a defender, but on this occasion Jorgensen gets out well to block.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 2-1 Chelsea90. Chelsea have seven minutes of stoppage time to rescue a game that they started so brightly……but look destined to end in the same shambolic manner of recent showings.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 2-1 Chelsea89. A howler from Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, and Marco Asensio looks to have won it for Aston Villa! The home side work a corner short from which Rashford pulls a waist-high cross back to the edge of the area.Asensio reacts well to meet it on the volley, but it’s an effort that is straight at Jorgensen, and one that everyone inside Villa Park expects to be smothered by the Danish stopper. But somehow the ball creeps through his hands, under his body, trickles over the line, and sends the home fans into ecstasy.A disaster for the keeper, and a damning indictment of Chelsea’s transfer dealings that have left them without a worthy number one. Copy linkCopiedAsensio at the double!Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea87. Jorgensen denies Malen!Aston Villa have a corner.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea85. Five minutes remain at Villa Park. And it’s the home side looking more likely now.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea83. Chelsea go into the final minutes, having only made two changes – and one of those was in the first ten minutes and due to an injury to Trevoh Chalobah. It’s incredible that a club can spend so much money on so many players, and then still consider themselves short of options on the bench.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea81. An Aston Villa free-kick drilled into the box causes chaos, and in the confusion, Bogarde goes down under pressure.Michael Oliver says no penalty, but VAR take a closer look at what is a pull back by Cucurella. They quickly come to the same conclusion.Well, if Ashley Young didn’t get the decision in today’s early game then this was never happening.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea79. Fernandez is off target for the visitors. The midfielder is not renowned for his scoring, but has registered four attempts and one goal this evening.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea77. Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers have run their race. The attacking pair take a breather, and now it’s a chance for Leon Bailey and Donyell Malan.Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho is on for Chelsea, replacing Christopher Nkunku.Copy linkCopiedFrom Graham Hill at Villa ParkPedro Neto curled a shot just wide of the far post after slip by Tyrone Mings – then shot straight at Martinez. But Villa have come back into it, with half-time sub Marcus Rashford playing his part.Matty Cash’s deep ball into the Chelsea area found Rashford who squared for Marco Asensio to score his first Villa goal.A lengthy VAR check for offside followed, but the goal stood. Villa then lost Tyrone Mings as the defender failed to shake off a knock. Cole Palmer has been quiet today, but he came close to regaining the lead with 22 minutes left. It’s game on here and there for the taking from either side.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea75. Ezri Konsa saves Aston Villa! And spares his goalkeeper’s blushes in the process.A measured through ball from Moises Caicedo has Cole Palmer in on goal, and when Martinez foolishly rushes off his line and then slips twice, the Chelsea man looks certain to score. However, Palmer delays his shot and that allows just enough time for Konsa to get back and block brilliantly.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea72. Now Christopher Nkunku goes into the book for a wild swipe at Morgan Rogers.Villa have also made another switch with Andres Garcia a like-for-like replacement for Matty Cash.Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea70. John McGinn is yellow carded for a foul on Marc Cucurella. In fairness, who hasn’t fantasised about kicking him over at some point?Copy linkCopiedAston Villa 1-1 Chelsea69. Cole Palmer hasn’t found his range this evening.Space opens up for the forward on the edge of the box, but his low curler is well wide of the far post.Copy linkCopied More

Arsenal player ratings: Ricardo Calafiori hooked for constantly losing the ball as Mikel Merino looks lost as a striker

MYLES Lewis-Skelly’s second red card of 2025 appeared to put the final nail in Arsenal’s title dreams and any chances of them catching Liverpool. The Gunners simply didn’t turn up and failed to respond to Jarrod Bowen’s opener on the brink of half-time.Jarrod Bowen gave the visitors the lead with a diving headerCredit: PAMyles Lewis-Skelly was handed his second red card of the seasonMikel Arteta’s side remain eight points behind table toppers LiverpoolAnd Liverpool fans will breathe a sigh of relief given their recent dip in form as Arsenal remain EIGHT points behind Arne Slot’s men.The Hammers’ wall stood firm as Arsenal registered just two shots on target before Lewis-Skelly’s last-man foul on Mohammed Kudus was upgraded to a red after ref Craig Pawson went to the monitor. Mikel Arteta looked heartbroken to see the 18-year-old – who had only been on the pitch for 17 minutes – given his marching orders again – just weeks after he was sent off at Wolves. That one was rescinded by the Prem a few days later, but today’s incident won’t be, as midfielder Mikel Merino looked lost as a makeshift No 9.READ MORE ON ARSENALHere SunSport’s Charlie Wyett rates every Arsenal player from the Emirates Stadium.DAVID RAYA – 5Declan Rice indicated to Raya that he expected him to come off his line to deal with the cross for the goal. Maybe he had a point but ultimately, Raya was let down by his defenders.JURRIEN TIMBER – 6West Ham did not offer much of a threat down their left so Timber had a reasonably comfortable game while he did try and get forward. Most read in FootballWILLIAM SALIBA – 6Was ordered by Arteta to push forward more in the second half when Arsenal had possession and in the closing stages, seemed to spend more of his time in West Ham’s area.GABRIEL MAGALHAES – 5Switched off for the Bowen goal but he was not the only one.  Also found the impressive Kudus tough to handle when he cut inside. Guilty of delivering an abysmal cross late in the game when Arsenal needed a bit of quality.RICCARDO CALAFIORI – 4A poor performance. Given the nod ahead of Lewis-Skelly but badly at fault for the opening goal as he did not get close enough to Aaron Wan-Bissaka who delivered the cross to Bowen. Was replaced after he kept losing the ball.DECLAN RICE – 5Not a day he will want to remember against his former club and plenty of stick from West Ham’s fans, as you would expect. Wasted one chance before the break and failed to track Bowen for the goal. Substituted shortly into the second half which was a surprise.Declan Rice endured a torrid afternoon against his former sideCredit: PATHOMAS PARTEY – 5A sluggish performance from Partey whose passing was also poor. Lucky not to be replaced.ETHAN NWANERI – 6Had a fascinating battle with West Ham teenager Ollie Scaries, who  was making his first Premier League start. Nwaneri was excellent at Leicester but had less success against his fellow youngster although still had some bright moments. But, at least he has a bit of a spark unlike some of his more experienced team-mates. The 17-year-old sparked concern after coming off injured in the final 10.MARTIN ODEGAARD – 5Not having his best season at Arsenal. This was the sort of game Arsenal needed their captain to deliver a moment of inspiration but he failed to do so. LEANDRO TROSSARD – 5Not a surprise that he was not used as a false nine like that disastrous experiment against Leicester. But he had no joy against the impressive Wan-Bissaka.MIKEL MERINO – 5Was the two-goal hero in his first ever appearance as a substitute striker at Leicester but had no success against West Ham’s well-drilled defence. He looked lost.READ MORE SUN STORIESSubs: Zinchenko (for Rice 56 minutes) – 6Lewis-Skelly (for Calafiori 56 minutes) – 4Got a red card – Arsenal’s fifth of the campaign – and although he was a long way out could have no complaints.Sterling (for Nwaneri 81 minutes) – N/AWhite (for Saliba 87 minutes) – 5.Subs not used: Neto, Tierney, Kiwior, Jorginho, Butler-Oyedeji. Arsenal 0 West Ham 1: Gunners’ Premier League title hopes all-but over after Bowen goal and ANOTHER red card

WHAT a difference a striker makes. And if Mikel Arteta needed any more convincing, that is NOT Mikel Merino, as Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes took another fatal dagger to the heart.Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunityCredit: ReutersJarrod Bowen celebrates his first goal since returning from injuryCredit: GettyArsenal’s title hopes suffered a huge blowCredit: APWith two match-winning goals off the bench to help the injury-stricken Gunners past Leicester last weekend, 28-year-old midfielder Merino was given a first start of his senior career as a No.9.At the King Power, it worked a treat. But we now know that to be a fluke.Across 90 minutes at the Emirates against West Ham, for all his effort, the lumbering Spaniard looked out of his depth.Down the other end, Hammers forward Jarrod Bowen gave Merino a painful No.9 101 – one chance, one goal, with the instincts of a top class Prem predator in the 44th minute to take all three points.READ MORE ON ARSENALMerino will be criticised, but this was an all-round uninspiring display from Arteta’s men – inviting Liverpool to go 11 points clear to basically wrap things up.Injuries may have left them without a centre forward, but their title chase should not be fading this badly, and it will only get worse if this is all Arsenal can muster. It also helps to have 11 men on the pitch, another of their Achilles heels this season. In the 1-0 win at Wolves on January 25, it was a hugely controversial dismissal of Myles Lewis-Skelly by ref Michael Oliver, one that was overturned days later. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSThis one, however, was pretty clear cut, given by Craig Pawson in the 73rd minute after a VAR monitor review, Lewis-Skelly – 17 minutes after coming on – tripping Mohammed Kudus on the halfway line as last man. This was a welcome reprieve for Graham Potter, who continues his fine managerial form at this ground – a fourth win in five visits – and a first Prem win in five for the East Londoners. ‘I need to f—ing change’ – Arsenal’s David Raya reveals he was at ‘my lowest’ after ‘worst game as a professional’West Ham just love bursting the Arsenal bubble – their 2-0 victory here last season ultimately costing Arteta the title. It may well do again.Despite Arsenal’s lack of firepower, Potter reverted to a five at the back in search of a first Prem away of his Hammers tenure – and a first for the club this calendar year.Rush Green product Ollie Scarles, 19, got his first top-flight start at left wing-back, tasked with keeping another teenage sensation in Ethan Nwaneri, 17, quiet.James Ward-Prowse was also thrown in from the off – attempting to revive his West Ham career after being shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest in the summer under Julen Lopetegui. But all eyes were on Merino. In true Arteta tight-lipped fashion, he hinted in the build-up that he had been trialling a few down-the-middle alternatives in training during the week.So to opt for Merino from the off was bold, not that Arteta had much choice given Raheem Sterling’s disasterclass of a display at the King Power had rightly won him a place on the bench for this one. What a surreal part of Merino’s career. Deemed a midfield flop at Newcastle in 2017, he arrived in North London in the summer as a matured Euros winner with Spain with a point to prove in England.Six months later, he is leading the line for an injury-hit Arsenal in pursuit of a long-awaited Prem title. A daunting prospect, but no one, it seems, has told Merino that.Fearless in his approach, he was anywhere and everywhere, covering every blade of grass, perhaps too much at times. The exuberance and excitement of a dog on his first-ever trip to the beach with a crazed smile and tongue flapping in the wind. For a while, it proved effective. Up against big lump Max Kilman he won an early flick-on, smothered a loose ball and almost nicked a ball off Alphonse Areola with a well-timed press. But the early enthusiasm and impact quickly faded. While his timing darts into the box against a tiring Foxes back line was inch-perfect, on this occasion he was consistently a yard or two short.Leandro Trossard’s whipped delivery across the face of goal had Kilman stumped, something Merino had not anticipated, and shortly after could only get a toe to Thomas Partey’s angled cross.Merino remained persistent, blazing over at the near post while straying offside. His obvious limitations as a centre forward growing ever clearer inside 45 minutes at the Emirates. What Arteta could not have expected was such a resolute West Ham defence, one that had imitated a bunch of comedy circus clowns last week in their 1-0 home defeat to Brentford. With such a solid base, Potter’s boys were able to be braver on the ball – Aaron Wan-Bissaka galloping into space left by Riccardo Calafiori down the right and cutting the ball back.A player of Bowen’s quality should have found the target, instead shanking wide.A warning shot for the hosts that they did not learn from – conceding from a replica attack with the half almost up and weary legs on show as Jurrien Timber lost the ball just outside West Ham’s box.Bowen collected and carried and set Wan-Bissaka away, yet it was Calafiori’s passive defending that allowed him to run from the halfway line and into a crossing position.Fingers were being pointed all around as Bowen headed in from a few yards out. Gabriel should have cut out the danger, but it was Rice who had lost his marker Bowen at the crucial moment – having covered ground to run back with his old East London pal.An anxiety-inducing half watched with glee on Merseyside, but with gritted teeth in North London.Merino continued to flounder after the break, mistiming a jump from a Nwaneri cross, yet Arteta had no one to replace him with.READ MORE SUN STORIESBut changes were made just 10 minutes into the second half. Rice – to the delight of the taunting away end – did not look happy to be hauled off for Oleksandr Zinchenko, despite his ineffective afternoon.Calafiori also made way for Lewis-Skelly, but the 18-year-old was soon back down the tunnel, scuppering any hope of late comeback – not that it ever looked like coming, even with eight minutes of injury time. Southampton 0 Brighton 4: Saints lucky not to be hit for six as Seagulls run riot to reignite European charge

BRIGHTON made it three wins in a row as they cruised to a 4-0 victory at rock-bottom Southampton to climb to eighth place in the Premier League and keep their European ambitions on track.Goals from the excellent Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter, Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood were more than enough to condemn the Saints to a 21st defeat of the season.Brighton defeated Southampton to keep their European hopes aliveCredit: PABrighton star Joao Pedro scored the opener against SouthamptonCredit: RexGeorginio Rutter scored Brighton’s second at SouthamptonCredit: RexKaoru Mitoma made it three for Brighton against a struggling SouthamptonCredit: ReutersThat leaves Ivan Juric’s struggling side on just nine points, two fewer than Derby’s record low total from the 2007-2008 season. As if they did not already have enough problems, Southampton lost their captain Jan Bednarek through injury after just 10 minutes.Forgotten man Armel Bella-Kotchap was his replacement, coming off the bench to huge acclaim from the home support to make his first appearance in 567 days.Brighton were quickly on top though, with Pedro and Rutter causing Saints plenty of problems.Read More on FootballCarlos Baleba came close to opening the scoring when his free-kick cannoned off the wall and looped up on to the roof of the net before Mitoma missed a great chance at the far post after being found by Hinshelwood’s deep cross. The Seagulls were not to be denied for long and hesitation in the Saints defence was pounced upon by Pedro who coolly scooped the ball over the advancing Aaron Ramsdale to give Fabian Hurzeler’s side a deserved lead.Southampton were struggling to break into the final third but Welington did force Bart Verbruggen to claw the ball over the bar with a curling shot from the edge of the area in a rare home attack.Southampton thought they had equalised at the start of the second half when Cameron Archer neatly finished off a clever pass from Mateus Fernandes. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSArcher was flagged offside and VAR concurred, much to Saints boss Juric’s frustration. The Croatian boss was left even more red-faced when Brighton made it 2-0. Former Championship star now a train driver in ‘new career to last the rest of my life’ Joe Aribo was adamant that he had been fouled by Rutter in the build-up but referee Darren Bond waved away the protests and Yankuba Minteh was left with the simple task of rolling the ball across the six-yard box for Rutter to prod home his fifth league goal of the season. The game as a contest was over but Brighton had plenty of chances to add to their tally. Minteh had the goal at his mercy as he cut inside from the left but Ramsdale scrambled back to get a hand to his weak effort and Kyle Walker-Peters completed the clearance. It was just a temporary reprieve as another brilliant touch from Pedro sent Mitoma clear and the Japanese forward coolly dinked the ball over Ramsdale to score his fifth goal in seven games and cue a mass exodus in the home stands. Those who had remained saw Brighton add a simple fourth as Brajan Gruda’s corner fell to the unmarked Hinshelwood at the far post from where the 19-year-old scored his second goal of the campaign.Jack Hinshelwood completed Brighton’s triumph at SouthamptonCredit: Rex More

Everton 2 Man Utd 2: Referee controversially overrules last-minute penalty to spare Ruben Amorim ANOTHER defeat

DAVID MOYES vowed to bring back the thrills when he returned to Goodison – but not even he imagined it would be quite like this. Two goals up, then two goals conceded…and an Everton penalty in the last of six added minutes which referee Andy Madley overturned after reviewing the video.Everton were initially awarded a stoppage-time penalty for a foul on Young but the ref overturned his decisionCredit: AFPBruno Fernandes inspired Man Utd to a comeback at Goodison ParkCredit: PAManuel Ugarte produced a brilliant equaliser to salvage a drawCredit: GettyThe Red Devils were completely outplayed in the first halfCredit: ReutersBeto and Abdoulaye Doucoure got on the scoresheet for the ToffeesCredit: GettyIf Moyes’ hair hadn’t already gone grey by the time he went back as Goodison boss, it surely would be now.At half-time the Toffees were in cruise control – goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure giving them an advantage that could easily have been double. But then Ruben Amorim threw Alejandro Garnacho on from the bench for the final, frantic half an hour, and the whole thing turned on its head and United somehow clawed their way back.A stunning Bruno Fernandes free-kick and an equally blockbusting edge-of-the-box drive from Manuel Ugarte somehow earned United a point that never looked likely.Everton thought they were handed a golden chance to win it for a second time – only to have it snatched away a minute later. When Idrissa Gana Gueye fired in a low drive after 95 minutes, Andre Onana pushed it back into play and Ashley Young crashed under Matthijs De Ligt’s challenge. The Dutchman clearly had a hand on Young’s shirt, and ref Madley had no doubt – yet when he was sent to the monitor for a double check, amazingly the official changed his mind.Everton were enraged, United escaped…and everyone left Goodison wondering quite how Moyes had failed to gain revenge on the side that sacked him 11 years ago. Most read in FootballJOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUSBeto had blasted Everton ahead on 19 minutes, making United pay for their pitiful attempts to clear Jack Harrison’s corner. Then Doucoure doubled the advantage by muscling Harry Maguire aside to nod in when Onana blocked Jack Harrison’s point-blank drive.Europa League last 16 draw sees Man Utd face Real Sociedad and Tottenham take on AZ Alkmaar United were on the canvas – yet somehow picked themselves up when everyone was expecting a knockout count.First skipper Fernandes fired in a scorching free kick – although keeper Jordan Pickford’s initial step to the right gave him no chance of reaching it.And ten minutes from the end another Fernandes free kick was headed clear by Beto, only for Ugarte to smash it back with interest.Everton were stunned into silence at chucking it away, only to think they would at least make amends from the spot in that unbelievable, jaw-dropping finsh.Referee Madley, though, decided otherwise… More
