Why is Man Utd’s Lisandro Martinez wearing a headband against Crystal Palace?

MANCHESTER UNITED are taking on Crystal Palace right now in the Premier League. For the first time since his return from the World Cup with Argentina, Lisandro Martinez is in United’s starting lineup in the league.

But he’s already been in the wars.
It’s been a feisty affair already in South London, and United need a win to keep up the pace with rivals Man City and Arsenal.
Eagle-eyed viewers will be able to spot that the former Ajax man is already sporting a bandage around his head at Selhurst Park.
CRYSTAL PALACE VS MAN UTD – LIVE BLOG
Why is Lisandro Martinez wearing a headband?
The centre-back has been solid so far in his side’s clash against Palace.
He started the game well by nicking the ball of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who got himself into a promising position.
But Mateta got back him back very quickly soon after.
As the Palace striker came short to receive a bouncing ball, Martinez followed.

However, the Argentine was greeted with a stiff elbow the head as Mateta controlled the ball and moved it on to his team-mates.
Martinez went down to the ground and received treatment for several minutes before United’s treatment team wrapped a bandage around his head.
Martinez is back up and playing, however, and will be in some battle with Mateta all evening it seems. More

Watch Leeds ace Wilfried Gnonto net just 26 seconds into Cardiff FA Cup clash with strike ‘better than Di Canio’

WILFRIED GNONTO scored a sensational scissor kick 26 SECONDS into Leeds’ FA Cup replay with Cardiff. The Whites needed a last-gasp goal in the first game to send the tie to a replay and Jesse Marsch’s side made the perfect start to this one.

Fans have likened the goal to Paulo Di Canio’s famous scissor kickCredit: Reuters
In the first attack of the game, Rodrigo sent a cross to the far post and Gnonto watched the ball over his shoulder before taking aim.
And the Italy international, who scored his first Leeds goal against West Ham earlier this month, sent a stunning first-time volley into the net.
But it wasn’t any ordinary volley, it was a scissor kick, which left Cardiff goalkeeper Jak Alnwick with no chance.
And some fans have likened the goal to a similar one that ex-West Ham star Paulo Di Canio scored more than 20 years ago.

Di Canio’s goal against Wimbledon is widely-regarded as one of the best goals in Prem history.
One said: “What a hit! Di Canio-esque.”
A second said: “Oh my word. Di Canio vibes from fellow Italian Willy Gnonto.”
A third admitted: “Di Canio-esque finish from Gnonto. Must be an Italian thing. #lufc.”

While a fourth said: “Omg that is Di Canio esc from Gnonto 🔥.”
And another couldn’t believe what he had seen.
He said: “That’s the best goal I’ve ever seen from Gnonto, outside of the boot Di Canio. Oh my life.”
While former striker Jay Bothroyd went further on SkySports New and said it was BETTER than the Italian legend’s strike.

Man Utd ‘reject Harry Maguire West Ham loan as Ten Hag feels star still has key role’ despite playing Shaw centre-back

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly rejected West Ham’s loan bid for Harry Maguire. The England international has been down the Old Trafford pecking order all season – and now appears to find himself behind left-back Luke Shaw for the centre-back spot.
Maguire has been fighting for his place in the first-team this seasonCredit: Reuters
Despite Maguire being out of favour, United appear unwilling to get him off the books.
The Mail report that West Ham made an audacious enquiry about landing the 29-year-old on loan amid their Premier League struggles.
But United quickly rejected the idea with Erik ten Hag keen to keep Maguire at the club.
This is despite the fact that Maguire looks far from regular first-team football.

He was left on the bench for the Manchester derby – alongside Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof – as Luke Shaw continued playing in central defence.
The former Southampton star, who normally plays full-back, has started alongside Raphael Varane at centre-back in three of United’s last four Premier League games.
Shaw has generally impressed with his appearances but it has added uncertainty to the future of Maguire.
He has only made seven starts this season among his 15 appearances.

But with United the only English side still in the hunt for four major trophies, ten Hag will likely need depth in the closing months of the season.
The win over Manchester City on the weekend left United nine points behind Arsenal.
That gap could be down to three by Sunday evening if the Red Devils beat Crystal Palace and the Gunners in their next two games. More

Premier League games set to last 100 MINUTES next season as World Cup-style time-keeping set for global roll-out

WORLD Cup-style time-keeping will be introduced into the Prem next season after football’s Law-makers approved its global roll-out.And fans in stadiums are set to be told by referees why VAR decisions have been made for the first time as the game’s tech revolution gathers pace.
The Premier League is set to introduce World Cup style added timeCredit: Alamy
Yesterday’s business meeting of the International FA Board at Wembley saw a series of significant decisions that will change the face of football – with extra added time in each half becoming part of the game.
England’s World Cup opener against Iran saw 27 minutes of added time across both halves, with an average “ball in play” of 58 minutes across the 64 matches.
But while Ifab chiefs hailed the “success” of the initiative, they do not believe that matches will last 105 minutes-plus across major leagues and competitions.
It meant there will be no trial of the idea, championed by former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein, of an independent stop-clock ensuring a minimum amount of ball in play time.
    read more on football
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham explained: “We wanted to improve the amount the ball was in play within the existing Laws.
“The World Cup proved we could do that.
“Rather than having a standardised time of one minute for an injury, if a player went down for three minutes, there were three minutes added.
“So there’s no advantage for a player in staying on the ground longer than they might otherwise need to – and the team doesn’t gain advantage from it.”

Miking up referees for the first time – to explain to the fans in the stadium and watching on TV why a decision has been changed by VAR – will be another huge change.
It will be trialled in Fifa competitions this season, starting with the imminent Club World Cup where refs include England’s Anthony Taylor, and potentially including the Women’s World Cup in the summer.
Bullingham added: “The conversation between the referee and the VAR will still be private.
“But then the referee will effectively go to the crowd and the broadcaster and say ‘this is what’s happened’.
“We think it’s significant and really important. We are doing it in international competitions first because that is harder than in domestic leagues where you can use your local language.”
The move is the first major step by the Ifab into allowing stadium and TV fans a proper insight into VAR deliberations, with Prem chiefs likely to be able to decide in the summer if they will follow suit.
It also backed the continued evolution of the Semi Automated Offside Technology deployed in the Champions League and World Cup, with members agreeing that the 3D animations give a better understanding of decisions for fans – although they are currently taking too long.
And referees will be ordered to follow the official Ifab guidelines on what constitutes “deliberate” and “non-deliberate” play by a defender to reset offside, likely to mean Mo Salah’s goal for Liverpool in the FA Cup 3rd round draw with Wolves would have been ruled out.
But despite the furore caused by Bruno Fernandes’ controversial goal in last weekend’s Manchester derby, the Ifab agreed there was no “gap” in the Laws that needed changing. More

Arsenal launches anti-Semitism probe over ‘offensive’ chant at Spurs clash

ARSENAL has launched an anti-Semitism probe over “offensive” chants during Sunday’s Spurs clash. The club published a statement this evening saying it had been made aware of “two disturbing incidents” at the weekend.
Arsenal has launched an investigation into two ‘grossly offensive anti-Semitic statements’ made over the weekendCredit: PA
One unfolded during the Spurs match itself, and another at the pub afterwards.
Arsenal said understood the impact such “grossly offensive anti-semitic statements” could have on their Jewish supporters.
It reiterated there was “no place” for such behaviour in football, or society.
Investigations into the incidents are now underway, it said.

In a statement, the club said: “We have been made aware of two disturbing incidents over the weekend involving anti-Semitism which are now under investigation.
“There was an incident at the North London derby on Sunday involving Arsenal supporters in which one of our fans overheard grossly offensive anti-semitic statements made by another Arsenal fan.
“On the same afternoon, we were appalled to hear of an incident at The Cally pub in Islington, involving other anti-semitic chants.
“We recognise the impact this behaviour has on our many Jewish supporters and others and condemn the use of language of this nature, which has no place in our game or society.”

The statement continued: “Arsenal must be a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, and we want to be clear that any kind of discriminatory abuse is not welcome at our club.
“We will not stand for this kind of behaviour and will take strong action against any supporters who we establish are responsible for such acts.
“Anyone identified will receive a lengthy club ban and their details will be passed to the police to commence legal proceedings.
“If any of our supporters witness any form of discriminatory behaviour, we urge them to report the incident to the police.
“If inside our stadium, report to a matchday steward or use our ‘See Something, Say Something’ service by texting “FOUL” to 67777 together with a description of the incident and the location within the stadium.
“This enables supporters to report an incident safely and for us to act as quickly as possible.” More

    Viera overjoyed with performance
Patrick Viera has relayed how pleased he is that his side managed to stop the rot tonight with a draw against a top side.
It should now give them more confidence going into the rest of the season.
They welcome Newcastle to Selhurst Park on the weekend as they another of the in-form teams in the Premier League.
    Bounce back to winning ways
Despite the disappointment of taking a draw from the jaws of victory, United have a good run of games ahead.
If they can upset the form guide on Sunday, they have four very winnable games to follow.
Erik ten Hag will need his side to put games to bed and learn from tonight’s result.

Huge loss for weekend Emirates trip
Casemiro’s yellow card he picked up today will hurt United.
He was lucky it was only yellow when replays showed the challenge as it was very Souness-esque.
The Brazilian covers so much of the park for his team, it will cause them issues against the Premier League leaders.

    He’s taking the Michael surely
Michael Olise left Erik ten Hag reeling on the touchline with one magical set piece to ruin his hopes of making it a monumental 10 successive wins in all competitions.
Add to that the yellow card Casermiro picked up when Fred was warming up to come on for him, the Dutch manager will feel this has not been a good night at the office.
There was nothing David de Gea to keep his shot out, thundering off the bar and in.

FT: Crystal Palace 1-1 Man Utd
What a chance that was for United to close the gap on Arsenal and move to second in the table.
They will feel they did enough to win this game tonight, with Crystal Palace creating very little.
One moment of brilliance from Olise has got them a point today that may well not have deserved.

FT: Crystal Palace 1-1 Man Utd
The referee brings the game to a close.
Michael Olise’s stunning free-kick has prevented United making it tens win in a row.
ten Hag does not look happy on the touchline.
Crystal Palace 1-1 Man Utd – Casemiro chance
90+4. What a chance to win the game.
The corner comes in and it beats everyone and drops to Casemiro unmarked in the middle of an empty goal.
He cannot adjust his body quickly enough and it clips his thigh and goes wide of the goal.
    Crystal Palace 1-1 Man Utd
90+2. What a goal that was by Olise.
His free kick had whip and bend on it, hitting the underside of the bar and bouncing yards behind the line and into the roof of the net.
    Take a bow son.
Goal – Michael Olise (Crystal Palace)
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    90. United pass the ball around at the back.
They know that time is on their side now.
Schlupp is brought down by Fred, just a few yards outside of the box.
We are going to have four added minutes here.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    88. The home fans have been silent for a lot of this game since the goal.
That is half the battle when you come here, silence the fans.
United are only minutes away from winning ten consecutive games in all competitions, for the first time since Alex Ferguson was in charge.
    Credit: PA
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    86. Scoring goals seems a definite issue for Palace.
That could be a worry for the remainder of the season as they only sit seven points outside of the bottom three.
It is a big gap right now, but it may not be in a few weeks time.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    84. United are looking comfortable in possession.
This is what it is all about, seeing games out.
If you can do that, you can put a run together, like this Man Utd team has done so well.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    82. Casemiro is booked for a knee-high scissor tackle on Zaha as he dances past him.
That means he misses the game against Arsenal on the weekend.
After seeing the replay, he is lucky to still be on the pitch.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    80. Eze beats Bruno Fernandes.
As he runs towards the edge of the box, Casemiro is there to stop him.
It has been a man of the match performance by the Brazilian tonight,
    Credit: Reuters
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    78. For a side with so little height in the side, Palace get a lot of aerial balls into the box.
It is meat and drink for the United defenders.
Eriksen is fouled much to the dismay of the home fans.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    76. Palace are trying to turn the screw now.
United have defended well so far, allowing them no way through.
The corner comes in and finds Elise who heads towards goal but de Gea dives and saves well.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    74. McTominay goes down in the box, claiming a penalty.
VAR does check it but there was no clear and obvious error.
Palace push forward but play is stopped as he calls Zaha and McTominay over for a word.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    72. Wan-Bissaka is penalised for a foul on Zaha.
Palace bring on Schlupp and Ayew.
    Doucoure and Edouard come off.

    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    70. United bring McTominay and Garnacho on.
Weghorst and Antony leave the field.
The away fans continue to out-sing the home fans.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    68. This game is getting like Floyd Mayweather against Deji.
With Palace being the latter, you know they want to get some punches in and hurt their opponent but they just don’t seem to have the ability to deliver.
United are making them chase shadows at the moment.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    66. We may see the managers start thinking about some changes around this time.
ten Hag could do with a second goal so he could start resting some of his stars for the Arsenal game on the weekend.
Games come thick and fast in the league at the moment.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    64. Zaha is penalised for a foul on the Brazilian.
As time ticks on, Viera’s side are becoming more desperate in the tackle when not in possession.
Rashford tries a shot from distance, high, wide and not so handsome.
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    62. United win a free kick as Fernandes goes to ground.
As soon as an opposition player touches him, he comes down quicker than the rain.
Both sides are struggling to find any rhythm right now.
Meanwhile Casemiro has a selfie with a fan who evades stewards.
    Credit: Reuters
    Crystal Palace 0-1 Man Utd
    60. Casemiro tries to slot a pass in behind the Palace defence for Wan-Bissaka.
The hosts just about manage to cut it out.
On the counter attack Eze has shot from outside the box but it is not troubling anyone outside of row M.
