Results have started to match poor displays since the Premier League’s resumption, however, with Antonio Conte’s side’s latest struggle coming against Manchester City yesterday.
Spurs took a shock 2-0 half-time lead through Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal’s quickfire double, only for a series of defensive calamities to undermine their efforts and see them fall to a 4-2 defeat.
Tottenham are now five points off the top four, with Newcastle, Manchester United and City all possessing a game in hand.
The Lilywhites managed to overhaul a bigger deficit to Arsenal during last season’s top four race – with January signings Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur playing a huge part in pushing them over the line.

They will likely need similarly high quality reinforcements if they are to repeat the trick this year.
So SunSport has taken a look at the five players Spurs should recruit in order to clamber back into the top four race.
    JORDAN PICKFORD

Tottenham are eagerly trying to sign Sporting Lisbon right wing-back Pedro Porro.
The position is a priority for Spurs, with Emerson Royal having proven to be not good enough for Conte’s side.
Having turned down a number of bids already, Sporting are determined to hold out for Porro’s £39.9million release clause.

    KIM MIN-JAE
Having been linked with Kim Min-jae last summer, Spurs could return for the commanding Napoli centre-back.
The 26-year-old is a rock at the back and an international team-mate of South Korean star Son Heung-min.
Tottenham would have to move swiftly to sign him, however, with Man United and Real Madrid also linked.

    PIERO HINCAPIE
Spurs are weighing up a £20m swoop for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie.
The Lilywhites are set to be in again for a left-footed defender, with loanee Clement Lenglet to return to Barcelona at the end of the season.
However, Leverkusen may demand that they keep the highly-rated 21-year-old on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Chelsea could make £55MILLION loss on Kai Havertz as Bayern Munich ‘line up transfer swoop’

CHELSEA could reportedly be set to make a whopping £55MILLION loss on Kai Havertz. The 23-year-old cost the Blues £72m up-front when they signed the attacker from Bayer Leverkusen back in September 2020.

But that deal could eventually cost them £90m in total due to add-on clauses.
Initially costing £72m, the attacking midfielder will earn Leverkusen an extra £18m if certain performance-related bonuses are fulfilled.
Chelsea handed over another £9m when Havertz fired them to Champions League glory against Manchester City in 2021.
And they were also due to pay a further £9m as an instalment at a later date.

However, amid an influx of new signings as part of owner Todd Boehly’s mega-money overhaul of the squad, the German international could reportedly be heading back to his homeland as a huge loss to the club.
According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich are watching Havertz’s situation at Chelsea very closely.

They state that a move may happen in the summer – but the transfer fee would only be between £35m to £52m.
Havertz, who is under contract until 2025, has scored six goals so far this season and is Chelsea’s joint-top scorer with Raheem Sterling.

Pep Guardiola rages at ‘bulls***’ Man City criticism but warns his team Arsenal will ‘destroy’ them if they don’t change

PEP GUARDIOLA raged against the “bulls***” criticism aimed at Manchester City. But the four-time Premier League winner admits Arsenal will “destroy” the defending champions if they don’t play with more passion.

City were given a fright by Tottenham at the Etihad last night, with Antonio Conte’s Londoners racing into a two-goal lead at the break.
But strikes from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland quickly restored parity before Riyad Mahrez’s double sealed a 4-2 comeback win.
The result keeps City within touching distance of table toppers Arsenal, who are five points clear with a game in hand.
However, there were signs of discontent amongst home fans when they loudly booed their side off the field at half-time.

And City’s lack of consistency has also led to suggestions they have a weaker squad than last season.
But Guardiola was having none of it in his post-match interview, blasting the critics’ opinions while defending his Etihad record.
The Spaniard said: “People say we haven’t had success because we haven’t won the Champions League – bulls***! We won a lot.
“Two back-to-back [titles] in the country, and the way we played, the consistency, against this Liverpool. What a success.”

Unfortunately for his players, Guardiola then took aim at City’s lack of guts and grit in their title battle against Arsenal.
He urged: “I want a reaction – not just from players, staff, the whole organisation. We are a happy flowers team.
“I want to beat Arsenal. But if we play that way Arsenal will destroy us.
“I cannot deny how happy we are [to win]. But we are far away from the team that we were. There are many things we are far away.
“We play because ‘my manager told me to do this’ – but there is nothing from the stomach, from the guts.
“We were lucky and if we don’t change, sooner or later we are going to drop points. No passion, no fire, desire to win from minute one.”
A fired-up Guardiola even turned his anger on City’s boo boys, adding: “It’s the same from our fans. They were silent for 45 minutes.
“They booed because we were losing, but not because we played bad. We played good. They booed because we were losing, but maybe it’s like our team.
“Maybe they’re too comfortable because we have won four Premier Leagues in five years. After we score a goal they react, but that’s not the point.
“We are far, far away from being able to compete at the highest level. Do you think we are going to close the gap to Arsenal the way we are playing? No way.
“Today we were lucky. If we want to win something or compete – but complaining, complaining – no chance we will win anything.”
One person who reckons Guardiola is “at the end of his tether” is former City defender Micah Richards, who commented: “It was scathing that, wasn’t it?

“It was almost as if he’d had enough of the situation of producing something so good, but nobody seems to be satisfied.
“When the fans boo, it’s never acceptable. It’s like he’s taken that personally. It’s like he’s at the end of his tether and I’ve not seen him like that before.” More

‘Why do I leave destruction in my path?’- Bankrupt footie star Pennant thought he was ‘lunatic’ before ADHD diagnosis

BANKRUPT former Premier League star Jermaine Pennant has revealed he thought he was a “lunatic” before being diagnosed with ADHD.The former Liverpool winger, who turned 40 on January 15, revealed to Sun Sport last week how he lost his career earnings of more than £10million — and got in such a mess he even forgot he owned a house.

The ex-Liverpool ace was declared bankrupt after earning around £10m while playingCredit: Getty
He splashed out on a fleet of supercars, homes, five-star holidays abroad and once paid a £25,000 bar bill on a lads’ break in Las Vegas.
Pennant also blew a fortune on bad investments and fell prey to hangers-on he says targeted him before he went on to lose three houses and more money through a divorce and bankruptcy.
Pennant, who is now dating girlfriend Jess Impiazzi, revealed he was diagnosed last year with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and PTSD linked to childhood trauma.
One in 25 people are believed to have the condition, which is usually spotted in childhood, which leads them to restless, struggle for concentration and act impulsively.
    READ MORE ON JERMAINE PENNANT
Now Pennant, whose career took off when Arsenal signed him from Notts County when he was just 15, has appeared on Good Morning Britain to reveal what it was like being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult.
He said: “It’s life-changing because I would ask myself so many questions over the years. ‘Why do I leave destruction in my path?’ Or ‘how have I got myself in certain situations?’
“I just thought it was down to me just being a lunatic or just not well and having serious issues but not actually identifying what they were.
“I was just going round-and-round in circles, making the same mistakes and telling myself ‘I know that I’m not a bad person but why am I doing this?’”
    Most read in Football
He added: “If you go to the beginning, you develop ADHD two ways. Either genetically from your parents or as a child you develop it through trauma and your environment.
“I had a very troubled childhood so my ADHD was a way of survival mode as a child. I developed ADHD and it made me survive.
“You can zone out when you get ADHD or you can zone in. My survival mode was to zone into football as that’s what I loved and that’s what saved me.
“But, as an adult, on the flip side it turns into a negative and destruction if you’re not diagnosed or aware of it.”
His ADHD meant he once forgot he owned a house in Cheshire after moving from Liverpool to Spanish side Real Zaragoza — although he was still paying the interest-only mortgage on it.
He bought the six-bedroom home in Hale for £1.2million on the advice of a fixer.
When he moved to Spain he left it empty — but it was later occupied by a drugs gang who caused a fire at the property.
He scored a hat-trick on his full Premier League debut for the Gunners aged 20 — but he later admitted he was hungover after going out the night before the match as he did not expect to be picked.
How to tell if you have ADHD as a grown-up…WHILE you can only be diagnosed with ADHD by a doctor, it doesn’t hurt to be armed with some knowledge to start that conversation with your GP.
Experts believe that the condition does not just develop in adulthood, but rather that you will have lived with it since you were a child.
However, the ways in which the symptoms can present can change as you get older.
The NHS states: “For example, hyperactivity tends to decrease in adults, while inattentiveness tends to remain as the pressures of adult life increase.
“Adult symptoms also tend to be far more subtle than childhood symptoms.”
The NHS lists the following list of symptoms of ADHD in adults:

Carelessness and lack of attention to detail
Always starting new tasks before finishing old ones
    Poor organisational skills
    Inability to focus or prioritise
    Continually losing or misplacing things
    Forgetfulness
    Restlessness and edginess
Difficulty keeping quiet, and speaking out of turn
Blurting out responses and often interrupting others
Mood swings, irritability and a quick temper
    Inability to deal with stress
    Extreme impatience
Taking risks during activities, often with little or no regard for personal safety or the safety of others – for example, driving dangerously.

But despite a promising start, he was shipped out on loan to various clubs before joining Birmingham City in 2005.
While at the Blues, he was jailed for drink-driving after crashing a Mercedes into a lamppost — when he was already banned from the road for the same offence.
But Birmingham stuck by him and he played with an electronic tag fitted to his ankle after his release.
He earned a big-money move to Liverpool where he played a key role in their run to the 2007 Champions League final, which they lost to AC Milan.
After falling foul of boss Rafa Benitez, he joined Real Zaragoza on wages of £80,000 a week but only stayed at the club for a year.
Pennant, who earned £30,000 a week at Liverpool, again hit headlines when he left his Porsche at a rail station in Spain for a month because he forgot about it.
The ex-England under-21 star then joined Stoke City. Spells at Wolves, FC Pune City in India, Wigan Athletic, Singapore side Tampines Rovers and Bury followed — before he ended his career at non-league Billericay Town in 2017.
He has admitted his biggest regret was his drink-driving conviction, which led to him being locked up alongside murderers and terrorists.
Pennant also said he regrets revealing in his 2018 autobiography that he and former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, 42, had threesomes with girls.
After retiring he set-up his own company to handle his pay from his 2018 appearance on Celebrity Big Brother and other TV appearances as a pundit.
    Read More on The Sun
But his media company Jermaine Pennant Ltd was dissolved and struck off the company register in 2020.
Pennant will this year be seen on Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins alongside ex-Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Man Utd ‘confident’ Alejandro Garnacho will sign new deal ‘very soon’ amid Real Madrid and Juventus transfer interest

MANCHESTER UNITED are allegedly “confident” that Alejandro Garnacho will sign a contract extension “very soon” despite interest from Europe’s big guns. The 18-year-old Argentine winger has been enjoying a breakout season at Old Trafford with two goals and five assists in 16 appearances across all competitions.

Garnacho is currently believed to be on around £7,000 per week.
That makes him the second lowest paid senior player at the club with only Anthony Elanga below him on £5,500-a-week.
We reported this week that he had snubbed a new deal worth £20,000-a-week.
That led to both Juventus and Real Madrid stepping up their pursuit of the teenage ace.

Atletico Madrid are also keen on snapping up Garnacho from the Red Devils.
We then reported how United had upped their offer and were “close to” agreeing terms with him and his representatives as they looked to secure his future.
Now a fresh update from FootballTransfers states that Garnacho is on the verge of penning a package worth north of £30,000 per week.
That would be on a six-and-a-half year deal with the option of a further 12 months which includes bonuses for goals and other performance-related feats.

And transfer guru Fabrizio Romano told GiveMeSport: “Now, the conversations are very positive, so Manchester United are relaxed on the Garnacho situation.
“They feel they will have the chance to extend his contract very, very soon.”
Garnacho was a product of Atletico’s youth system after arriving from Getafe in 2015 and playing for the academy set-up until two and a half years ago.
They let him join United for £420,000 fee in 2020 and he has since risen through the ranks into Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad. More

‘Spurs bottled it’ – Brutal Jamie Carragher tears into woeful Tottenham defence after second-half meltdown vs Man City

JAMIE CARRAGHER tore into Tottenham for bottling a two-goal lead in the second half of their away trip to Premier League champions Manchester City.Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal sent Spurs in at half-time with a healthy lead.

Carragher says Spurs ‘bottled it’Credit: Sky Sports
For once, Arsenal fans would’ve been thanking their North London rivals for denying title rivals City points, with Pep Guardiola’s men trailing the Gunners by eight at that time.
Arsenal also hold a game in hand, and should they have won that IF Spurs did their job, the gap could’ve been extended to 11 points.
However, a second-half meltdown saw Spurs surrender their two-goal lead within eight minutes of the restart.
World Cup winner Julian Alvarez smashed home City’s first in the 51st before Erling Haaland ended his two-game goal drought in the 53rd.

Mahrez then grabbed a goal of his own just after the hour mark to hand City the lead.

Carragher also tore into Tottenham’s defenders AND captain Hugo Lloris, who is the man in between the sticks.
Lloris has been shaky since returning from the World Cup and was beaten at his near post for Mahrez’s first.
Carragher added: “He [Conte] can never rely on his back three, or back five or goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet. I always feel like they’re going to concede a goal.
“He’s not going to change his tactics, this is what he does, he relies on a good strong base and having great attacking players on the counter-attack.
“He’s got those great attacking players, but his goalkeeper and defenders are nowhere near good enough for a Conte team to be successful, and that’s where they’ve got major problems.
“The goalkeeper at Tottenham right now, he’s been a good goalkeeper, but he has become a liability, they need a new goalkeeper for next season.
“Antonio Conte is talking about taking them further, getting top four or challenging for big honours.
“They need a new goalkeeper, need two centre-backs and a right wing-back and that’s not to come into the squad, that’s to play.”
On the other side of the dugout, Man City boss Guardiola called out his own fans.
Guardiola was unimpressed by their silence for 45 minutes.
On what’s missing at City at the moment, he said: “Passion, desire, to win from minute one.
“It’s the same for our spectators, our fans. They are so silent for 45 minutes.”
    Read More on The Sun
Guardiola added: “I want my fans back. I want my fans back in here. Not my away fans – my away fans is the best.
“But my fans in here, we want support for every corner, their reaction and support, because we play, we cannot expect [to win] because Tottenham is one of the greatest opposition in how good they defend, how they are organised, how they make a build-up, how they link with Harry Kane, Kulusevski and Son, they make incredible switch of plays, the threat they have in every single moment is incredible.” More

Liverpool vs Chelsea: Traditional title challengers are shockingly competing for mid-table supremacy – it’s a must win

WHO would have thought by the time this clash between Liverpool and Chelsea came around we would be seeing a battle for mid-table supremacy?Injuries have killed any realistic chance of a title charge for either side – but some fans are shouldering more blame on the managers at present.

Jurgen Klopp might have delivered Liverpool to a historic title triumph in 2019/20, but over-reliance on some of those same players hasn’t helped things this season.
Some of the youngsters he has brought into the first-team squad – the likes of Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho – have shown glimpses of their talents.
But would they form part of a title-winning XI now? The jury is well and truly out.
Chelsea were taken over by Todd Boehly, sacked boss Thomas Tuchel and poached Graham Potter from Brighton.

The neutrals among us were pleased to see one of the giants of English football giving a big change to an Englishman.
But even by his own admission, Potter has found it tough going at Stamford Bridge.
He has been hammered by a succession of injuries that have meant he has never been able to put out the same XI.
But Blues fans, backed by their new billionaire, want so much more than what they are seeing right now.

Who will win the mid-table mediocrity clash? Will new £88m signing Mykhailo Mudryk feature for Chelsea? SunSport runs through the key things to watch and provides a big match prediction.
    What is their form like?
Liverpool looked to be getting their season back on track – until successive losses against Brentford and Brighton.
Klopp’s side have won three and lost two of their last five Prem games.
Chelsea ended a three-game winless run by beating Crystal Palace last time out 1-0.
In their last five games they have won two, lost two and drawn one.
What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?
Liverpool’s season has been hit by a whole host of injuries.
Roberto Firmino, Arthur Melo, Virgil van Dijk, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are all ruled out.
Darwin Nunez and Konstantino Tsimikas are battling to shake off niggles for the game.
Chelsea’s medical room is even busier.
Edouard Mendy, Christian Pulisic, Armando Broja, Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Denis Zakaria, Raheem Sterling and N’Golo Kante are all crocked.
Joao Felix will miss the game after being sent off on his debut against Fulham. But new £88m signing Mykhailo Mudryk is set to feature – thought might have to wait on the bench.
A Liverpool XI without Virgil van Dijk is just not the same LiverpoolCredit: PA
Who will be the star men?
It’s almost impossible to tell who will finally step up to the plate for Liverpool at the moment.
They are desperate for some genius from Mo Salah – surely it is time for him to find his scoring boots?
Mason Mount is pretty much the only certainty in the Chelsea XI at the moment.
Boss Potter is clearly a big fan, and will be relying on the England man to get his team motoring.

    What have the managers said?
Asked if the players who helped Liverpool beat Wolves in the FA Cup have played themselves into contention for the Chelsea game, Klopp said: “Yeah, yeah. I don’t think it will be right after one game to say, ‘That will be the team for the next eight weeks.’ Let’s have a look.
“We are not in a casting show. But, of course, the door is open to everyone. Whoever fights has a good chance to play.”
Speaking after ending their bad run by beating Palace, Potter said: “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved because it’s nice to get a win.
“I thought we played better than when getting no points against Fulham [in the 2-1 defeat on Thursday].
“And then when you get the red card for João Félix, who’s probably the last person you think is going to get a red card in that game, you think we’ve done something wrong in terms of luck.
“But you have to keep going and you have to deal with the bad times, deal with the tough situations, accept the criticism that comes your way and take your responsibilities. That’s what we’ve tried to do.”
