Declan Rice reveals reason behind bizarre No41 shirt number at West Ham as Arsenal look to seal summer transfer

The England international, 24, is being heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United in the summer.
But he is expected to remain the No41 wherever he ends up at the end of the season.
Last year, in an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, he said: “It was just the number I was given in the academy by the kitman.
“When you are in the Under-23s there are the first team squad numbers and then it gets to the higher numbers and I was given 41 when I went to Seattle on my first trip with the first-team. I was just given 41 and it has stayed with me since.

“And to be honest with you – I have been having these conversations with my dad – regardless of what happens in my career I may stay with 41.
“I just think Rice 41 has a nice ring to it and obviously I have grown up playing in it and I am a bit superstitious with things like that.
“I don’t know if I change to a new number if it will hamper my performances, I don’t know!
“Sometimes I think about things like that.”

When quizzed on whether the No7 would suit him, he then added: “Seven dog? Nah, not seven dog, no way.
“Either four or six, I think those are the standard numbers.”
Rice has been valued at £80m, with Arsenal hoping to fend off interest from Chelsea and Man Utd.
He hinted during the World Cup that his time at West Ham could be up.
When asked if he is hungry to win titles at club level, he said: “Yeah, 100 per cent. For the last two or three years I’ve been saying that.
“I’ve been consistently playing well for my club. I want to win trophies for my club.
“You only get one career and you want to look back at what you’ve won and play in the biggest games.
“I am really ambitious and I want that.” More

Man Utd fans rage at David de Gea as goalkeeper makes bizarre decision before Nketiah winner in Arsenal clash

MANCHESTER UNITED fans were left furious and baffled in equal measure by David de Gea’s decision late on against Arsenal. The Red Devils travelled to North London knowing that a win would narrow the gap at the top to five points.

But with the score level at 2-2 late on, Gunners striker Eddie Nketiah broke their hearts with a last-gasp winner.
After Lisandro Martinez’s 59th-minute equaliser, United had been getting increasingly penned back.
And their experienced goalkeeper missed a great chance to relieve some pressure with the clock starting to tick down.
After Bruno Fernandes made a crucial intervention from a cross, the ball looped up into the air.

It looked as if it would be a straightforward catch for De Gea, who had no Arsenal player challenging him.
Bafflingly, however, De Gea opted to punch the ball, when he could have caught it and used up some valuable seconds.
Instead, Fernandes again had to scramble after the ball when his keeper’s punch failed to travel far from trouble.
The moment infuriated many United fans online.

And a fourth pointed out: “Varane is there with his arms out making sure no one gets close and our goalkeeper can gather, and he does that…”
Another added: “P***ed me right off that did. Catch the damn ball.”
United’s defeat saw them fall 11 points behind top spot.
De Gea, 32, is set to be out of contract at the end of the season.
Last week, SunSport revealed he would be willing to take a pay cut on his £375,000-a-week wages to stay at Old Trafford.

And what he said in the huddle worked as the Gunners put in an amazing performance to beat United 3-2 thanks to a late Eddie Nketiah goal.
The Ukrainian reportedly told the team to enjoy the game and that nobody can beat them at the Emirates Stadium in front of their own fans.
Zinchenko knows what it takes to win a Premier League title, having lifted the trophy four times with Manchester City.
And his attempt to get the Arsenal players pumped up for the fixture has earned him much praise from supporters.

His old manager Pep Guardiola was recently left raging at his team’s lack of desire to win the Prem again for the fifth time in six seasons.
Mikel Arteta’s men sit top of the table, five points ahead of their closest rivals and also have a game in hand over them.
Arsenal being leaders in January has shocked many but not Zinchenko, who always believed they were serious title challengers.
He said after the win over United: “Obviously I knew the Arsenal team, I knew all of them before, but still I realised on the pitch we have everything to achieve big things.
“I started to speak in the dressing room, saying: ‘Guys, forget top three or whatever, we need to think about the title.’
“Some of them were laughing but no one is laughing now and all of us are dreaming.” More

Lampard, 44, had been feeling the heat in recent weeks and pressure had been mounting on his job, with the board holding an emergency meeting on Sunday.
The ex-Chelsea midfielder was then dismissed from his post on Monday after less than a year in charge.
He saw his side slump to a 2-0 defeat at fellow strugglers West Ham on Saturday in his final game.
That result leaves Everton 19th in the Premier League table, off the bottom on goal difference.

Doucoure was not involved in the trip to the London Stadium.
As reported by The Times, he is currently going through his drills and fitness work away from the rest of the first-team squad.
It is said the £22million former Watford man, 30, was part of the major row with the now ex-manager in the home changing room at Goodison Park after the 2-1 defeat to Southampton.
Doucoure, who has been linked with Fulham as his contract expires in the summer, was an unused sub in the Saints loss and has played just 341 minutes of football across all competitions this season.

Other players were also included in the heated altercation on January 14.
Everton have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games – a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on October 22.
Since the beginning of November, the Toffees’ only point came when they managed a 1-1 draw away at Manchester City.
The mood around Goodison is toxic with blatant struggles on the pitch and fans venting their anger at the board.
Owner Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright were in attendance at West Ham – Moshiri’s first live game since October 2021.
But both men bizarrely tried to avoid responsibility for the future of the club – with Moshiri somehow claiming it was “not his decision” whether or not to sack Lampard.
At the time, the sacked gaffer, though, said: “I absolutely don’t fear being sacked — I’m proud to do the job.
“I just get up every day and think how we can get better.”
Sean Dyche, Nuno Espirito Santo and Everton legend Wayne Rooney are among the candidates tipped to replace Lamps.

Former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas was at the match on punditry duty for Sky Sports.
And during the show, he revealed how everything has changed at London Colney since his 2011 departure… thanks to Mikel Arteta.
Fabregas, 35, said: “I was lucky enough to be at the training ground recently and it felt like I’d never been there before because everything had changed so much.
“The manager of the training ground told me that it’s 95 per cent Mikel who has changed the whole thing.”

Asked to delve deeper into what exactly had changed, Fabregas added: “Everything.
“The perception of the club in the last few years, a lot of positive messages around the training ground, much bigger facilities, better equipment, pitches, everything you name it.
“I think as well at the entrance they have this symbol of a Premier League where it’s an empty Premier League and he wants to kind of show the message that, ‘Guys, we need to just put it in there’.
“So every day the players they go there, they see the Premier League but only being the symbol, so it’s like a message or inspiration every day to go there and prove that you really want to put the Premier League [trophy] in there.

“So I think he’s changed the mentality of the club since Arsene [Wenger] left and it’s fantastic what he’s done.”
Arsenal star Oleksandr Zinchenko bullishly declared that no one is “laughing” at his side’s title ambitions now.
But Fabregas’ Sky colleague Gary Neville STILL doesn’t think the Gunners will get it over the line.
The 47-year-old said: “I don’t see them going on to win the league.
“I think Manchester City will win the league because I just think that what they’ve got in them is a special run, Manchester City.
“I think that at a point in the season Arsenal will lose one or two matches and City will be right on their shoulders and it will become very difficult for them.”
The Gunners are now five points ahead of City with a game in hand.
They will meet Pep Guardiola’s side twice in the Prem between now and the end of the season, as well as in the FA Cup this Friday.
