People are just realising why Joao Cancelo wears No7 at Man City… but he’s set to be denied number at Bayern Munich

JOAO CANCELO has been wearing the No7 shirt at Manchester City because of his mother, but won’t be allowed to don that number at Bayern Munich.Cancelo looks set to complete a shock loan move to Bayern until the end of the season after falling out of favour at City.

The versatile full-back, though, won’t get to extend a rather strange tradition that has seen him wear a “special” shirt number usually reserved for attacking players.
That is because former Arsenal ace Serge Gnabry has been wearing it for years at the Allianz Arena.
The Portugal international has been choosing the No7 jersey throughout most of his career because of his mum.
The 28-year-old revealed recently that it is mother’s favourite number and it also marks the day she was born.

Cancelo told City’s official website during pre-season: “This is a special number for me.
“It’s my mother’s birthday and it’s also her favourite number.
“I decided to choose this number because I think it brings me luck and I hope it brings luck to the team too, so this year we can win many titles.”
Cancelo wore the No7 shirt at Valencia and Inter Milan before joining Juventus in 2018.

That was the same year that saw Cristiano Ronaldo switching Real Madrid for Juve, and there was no way CR7 would be denied his favourite number.
Cancelo moved to City a year later and was initially allocated the No27 shirt because Raheem Sterling already occupied his top preference.
However, the Portuguese ace got what he wanted last summer after Sterling left for Chelsea. More

Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed that the 11-cap Italian has been asking to leave for a month and has missed the last three matchdays as a result.
Mourinho said ahead of last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Serie A leaders Napoli: “It has been a month since the player said that he wants to leave.
“After Spezia, I gave them a day off and an optional training session.
“All those who didn’t play came to work and these are the ones we want.

“If a player tells everyone that he doesn’t want to wear the Roma shirt, I have to say that he stays in spite of me.
“What I can say today is that Zaniolo will not be in Naples and I focus on those who will be.”
And according to Calciomercato, following the loss, Roma ultras gathered in front of Zaniolo’s house in the Casal Palocco area of Rome.
The report says the angry fans sang: “S**t! If we lost it’s all your fault. Go away!”

Zaniolo was reportedly chased away by the angry fans and the police were called.
The ultras quickly dispersed upon the police’s arrival.
The playmaker’s mother, Francesca Costa, has called the hatred “excessive” after a wall in Trigoria had a message for Zaniolo which attacked her.
Corriere Della Sera says a nasty message read: “Zaniolo executioner, your mother is a great s**t.”
Francesca said: “Having originated all this hatred seems a little excessive to me.”
Zaniolo has been linked with a move to the Premier League.
Tottenham are one of many said to be keen on the Roma ace.
Bournemouth were also rumoured to be monitoring Zaniolo’s situation, while Newcastle are said to be keen. More

How Chelsea could line up with Enzo Fernandez as Jorginho set to lose place if record £106m transfer completed

CHELSEA have not given up on signing Enzo Fernandez before the January transfer window closes. The Blues reopened talks with Benfica over the Argentine World Cup winner.

They have reportedly offered the Portuguese club the full £106million release clause paid in instalments or £88m up front plus a player.
However, a deal will need to get done quickly if Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is going to land the holding midfielder before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline.
Should Fernandez arrive, though, it could spell bad news for Jorginho.
The 22-year-old would be a certain starter under Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge.

Should everyone be fully fit, Fernandez could line up alongside N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic in a three-man midfield.
That would then allow a devastating front three of Joao Felix, Kai Havertz and Mykhailo Mudryk.
At the back, No1 Kepa Arrizabalaga would be shielded by a back four of Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell.
However, a completely different XI could see a 3-4-1-2 formation with Fernandez and Jorginho together in the middle of the park – although Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Denis Zakaria and Carney Chukwuemeka are also options.

Edouard Mendy could go in between the sticks with a back three of Trevoh Chalobah, Kalidou Koulibaly and Benoit Badiashile.
Cesar Azpilicueta would be at right wing-back with either Lewis Hall or Marc Cucurella on the other side.
That may mean Mason Mount plays in the No10 role with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined by David Datro Fofana or Raheem Sterling in attack.
Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech as well as January additions Noni Madueke and Andrey Santos will all be battling for game time, too.

Now Arsenal hope he will be able to gain regular football with the Championship promotion chasers before returning to the Emirates in the summer.
The arrival of Leandro Trossard in an initial £21million move from Brighton means that Arsenal now have enough cover to allow Marquinhos to go.
The raw youngster scored on his Arsenal debut in a 2-1 win against FC Zurich in the Europa League in September.
But he has started just two more games since then and Arsenal now feel he needs to gain more first-team experience before he will be ready to challenge for a place in Mikel Arteta’s team.

After Neymar had fired the hosts into the lead early in the second half, Reims boss Will Still rolled the dice in an effort to take some of the spoils away from the Parc des Princes.
And it was a stroke of genius as substitute Kamory Doumbia, 19, played a delightful pass beyond the PSG defence directly into the path of Balogun in the 96th minute.
The 21-year-old then rounded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and smashed the ball into the back of the net to spark wild Reims celebrations.
With his goal, Balogun has now scored 11 times in Ligue 1 this season.

He now sits only two goals behind superstar top-scorer Kylian Mbappe, and remarkably three goals AHEAD of World Cup winner Messi.
Arsenal did consider recalling the Englishman from his loan owing to their fears over a lack of striker cover.
But ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, they have thus far held off – partly thanks to the great form of Eddie Nketiah in the place of Gabriel Jesus.
His manager will be desperate to keep him at the club to help them push into the top half of the table.

The Serie A side have made an inquiry about the 29-year-old’s availability and it is believed a loan deal has been proposed.
However, the player would like to wait until the summer to decide on his long-term future.

The Daily Mail claim that Maguire is prepared to be patient for his chances in case injuries and suspensions become problems for manager Erik ten Hag.
Maguire recently stressed he did not want to become a bit-part player at Man Utd.

Speaking after his start in the FA Cup win over Reading, he said: “I’m 29 and haven’t really been in this position in my career before.

“We’re all going to be needed for the second half of the season.”
Maguire has been in the starting XI for just 20 per cent of Premier League matches this season.

Inter are in the market for a new central defender as Milan Skriniar is reportedly close to joining Paris Saint-Germain.
Simone Inzaghi’s team have also gone in for Maguire’s team-mate Victor Lindelof this January as a potential replacement.
The approach was rejected by Man Utd, who are looking to keep hold of their key players with a busy fixture schedule ahead.
The Red Devils are still going strong in all competitions this term and face many midweek games with the Europa League restarting soon, with a tough trip to Barcelona coming up.
