How Inter Milan could line up next season with defence made up of ex-Man Utd stars as Maguire is linked with transfer

Here is how Inter could line-up with Harry Maguire in the team
United’s captain reportedly wants to remain at the club and make a decision on his long-term future in the summer.
But if does leave, he could link-up with plenty of Red Devils alumni at the San Siro.
As Inter look set to allow Milan Skriniar to join Paris-Saint Germain, another centre-back they are keen on is Chris Smalling.
The 33-year-old is already at home in Italy with Roma, but his deal in the capital runs out at the end of this season and has handed in a transfer request in the capital.

The ex-England star – who made 323 appearances for Man Utd – could soon join Maguire at Inter.
His team-mate Victor Lindelof has also been monitored by the club but their advances for him have been rejected.
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi likes to use a 3-5-2 with wing-backs and ex-United ace Matteo Darmian features regularly.
The defender has played 21 times for Inter this season.

Further up the field is a fourth ex-Manchester United star, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
He played 63 times for the club, scoring 13 goals between 2016 and 2018.
Topping off the team is Romelu Lukaku, who is at Inter on loan from Chelsea.
The Belgian played at Old Trafford for two seasons under Jose Mourinho.
The rest of the team could be filled with the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Denzel Dumfries and Nicolo Barella.
The Nerazzurri currently sit second in the league, 13 points behind leaders Napoli.
And the club will face Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League.

But an incredible photo from his childhood days shows Maguire, now 29, looking very different in his school uniform.
He still has the famous wide jaw and dark hair as he sits behind his younger brother Laurence in their blue shirts and navy-and-white striped ties.
Older sibling Joe is seen in a blazer in an inset.
Another amazing snap from a few years later shows the three brothers – who are all footballers – sat in the garden, presumably at their Sheffield home.

“Harry was such a modest lad.
“He had his head screwed on even at that age. He did everything you asked him to do and he never questioned why. He was popular, and he was huge.
“Even at a young age he was very tall and he towered over teams.
“He got A* and A grades in his GCSEs. He was very capable academically.”
Maguire broke through on the football stage with Sheffield United then had three years with Hull before joining Leicester in 2017.
It was during his time with the Foxes he earned his call-up to the England senior squad, starring at the 2018 World Cup and then joining United for a world-record £85million a year later.
However, he has endured a tough time finding his best form at Old Trafford.
And his club future may be away from the Theatre of Dreams.

Cancelo’s game time has drastically reduced since he returned from the World Cup.
According to the Daily Mail his relationship with manager Guardiola was strained as a result.
And it reached boiling point after Cancelo was again overlooked in City’s 1-0 win over Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday.
The pair are believed to have had heated conversations over the last few weeks, with the Portuguese spotted in a slump on the bench as he watched his team-mates warm up ahead of a clash against Wolves.

Cancelo has reportedly been a disruptive influence on the squad in recent weeks.
And his relationship with Guardiola is said to be irreparable, with the club allowing Cancelo to leave.
Cancelo has fallen out of favour with Guardiola tweaking his system and has started only three of the 10 fixtures since returning from international duty – he was also hooked at half-time against Chelsea.
He may have already made his final appearance for the Citizens as Bayern have the option to make his move permanent for £61.5million.

That would see the English champs make a small profit on the player they signed in a £60m deal three-and-a-half years ago.
Even so, it would still be a surprise move for Man City given their well-documented problems in the full-back areas.
But that problem could be solved by the signing of Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell, who was of interest to City before he moved to Stamford Bridge. More

Two ways Arsenal can replace Thomas Partey without splashing out on huge Moises Caicedo transfer amid injury fears

NO MOISES CAICEDO, no problem.Arsenal are believed to have submitted a third bid for Brighton’s Ecuadorian midfielder and Gooners’ anxiety levels are through the roof.

The Gunners are launching a third transfer bid for Moises CaicedoCredit: Getty
Since the initial concerns over Thomas Partey’s injury fans have been concerned over what we’ll do if a new midfielder isn’t brought in before the deadline.
It seems obvious now that while Albert Sambi Lokonga may well evolve into a true talent in time, he simply does not possess the mentality required to play as a sole defensive midfielder for now.
The young Belgian is fine with the ball, but shows little without it and that on its own rules him out as cover for Partey.
What seems strange, given the two failed bids for Douglas Luiz at the end of the last transfer window, is that Mikel Arteta and Edu had seemingly identified this as a squad weakness.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
So why then wait until the final week of this present window to bid for Caicedo?
We may never know the answer and we may yet further test Brighton’s resolve but what if we don’t and have left it too late to seek an alternative, given Mo Elneny’s absence?
The first thing to bear in mind is that Partey is not injured and will play this weekend against Everton, so we are truly looking at worst case scenario contingency plans.
We have cover for Granit Xhaka but do we have options for an injury to our Ghanaian lynchpin?

My belief is that we have two possible solutions.
Firstly, we know that Oleksandr Zinchenko captains Ukraine from the base of their midfield.
Yes, international football is different to the Premier League, but we have seen our left-back step into Arteta’s midfield before.
Technically, the Ukrainian is without doubt able to play the defensive pivit role. He reads danger well, is more than proficient at avoiding the press, can operate in tight spaces and has the ability to start attacks with his passing range.
If we were to move Zinchenko into a deep midfield role, we are fortunate to have a quality international left back in Kieran Tierney to slot in at fullback.
The ever popular Scot would not let anybody down but has struggled to play the new role as Arteta has asked him. This being the case the team might have to slightly change their style, but Gabriel Martinelli’s workload would decrease with the return of his former pal overlapping.
If Arteta is set on playing the same way, and who could blame him as it is working so well, there is a second option that allows Zinchenko to stay at left back, supporting the midfield as he currently does.
At right back, Ben White is not required to step into midfield and operate more conventionally, supporting and overlapping Bukayo Saka.
We are blessed on that flank to also have two high level exponents of the role and, as we saw against United, playing Takehiro Tomiyasu at right back is seamless, and does not weaken that flank.
White has played the defensive midfielder role at Leeds in the past. Today’s White is a far superior model to the one who helped Leeds gain promotion and I have few doubts he could proficiently play in the position.
We have been stunned by his close control, intricate touches in evading challenges and his passing range, all evident during his successful transition from centre back to right back this campaign.
White will not be a Partey clone but his defensive awareness and understanding of what to do without the ball, would make his a far more compelling and mature option to Lokonga.
    Read More on The Sun
I have not mentioned our new Polish addition as whilst I read he can play in midfield, to do so in a new league straight away would be a huge ask.
Let’s see what the deadline brings but let’s not be all doom and gloom. We are still top of the toughest league in the world and we do have strong internal possibilities if the our worst fears do materialise. More

Everton handed the former Burnley boss a two-and-a-half-year contract and will be hoping he can lead them to Premier League safety.
However, a previous post-match interview has emerged in which Dyche hammered the Everton team.
The 51-year-old had just led his Clarets to a comeback victory over Everton at Turf Moor in April 2022 – shortly before he got the boot from Burnley.
Everton were 2-1 up at half time thanks to a brace from Richarlison, but goals from Jay Rodriguez and Maxwell Cornet handed victory to Dyche’s men.

After the game, Dyche did not hold back as he said: “The mentality is hard. I have been down there.
“Sometimes it is hard to explain, but you get a sense that a team [Everton] don’t know how to win a game.
“I said to them at half time ‘I’m not sure these know how to win a game, especially away from home’.”
Dyche has previously been praised for making his teams hard to beat and he was successful during his ten-year spell with Burnley.
