Arsenal confirm £12m Jorginho transfer as ex-Chelsea star seen in Gunners shirt for first time

MIKEL ARTETA finally got the midfield reinforcement he wanted when Arsenal completed a £12million deal for Chelsea veteran Jorginho. The League leaders made a last-ditch swoop for the 31-year-old Italian international after finally calling off their pursuit of Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

They were ready to pay a club record £75million for Ecuador international Caceido after two earlier bids had been knocked back, but Brighton made it clear that they were not selling at any price.
And Jorginho’s Emirates arrival could not have been more perfectly timed after it was confirmed that Mohamed Elneny is likely to be out for the rest of the season after undergoing a knee operation.
Arteta had already been sweating over his lack of options in the middle of the pitch when Thomas Partey suffered a rib injury during last week’s FA Cup defeat at Manchester City.
And though scans have confirmed that Partey’s injury is not serious, his absence during the second-half at the Etihad last week highlighted Arsenal’s lack of options in a key area of the team.

Now Jorginho has arrived to plug that hole, signing an 18-month contract with the option for a further year.
He said: “Mikel Arteta was a big influence on my decision because I know that he tried a few times to get me before.
“Everything has happened so fast. I was a bit surprised, but I took the opportunity of this amazing challenge.
“It’s an important shirt. It’s an amazing club, a big one, and I’m really excited and happy to be here.

“I’ll try to bring positive energy, hard work and my experience to help the team. It’s what I always bring with me.
“I try just to help with the experience I’ve had in my time with the other clubs and anything I can do just to help the team to achieve more and more, that’s my target.”
Arteta added:  “Jorginho is a player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience.
“He has won many things in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here.”
The Brazilian-born midfielder spent five seasons at Chelsea after following Maurizio Sarri from Napoli in a £50million deal and won both the Champions League and the Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge.
He was also a key figure when Italy beat England in the European Championships final in 2021.
Arteta had first tried to sign Jorginho in the summer of 2020 but was knocked back by Chelsea before signing Partey from Atletico Madrid in a £45million deal.
And the Arsenal boss is confident the player’s vast experience and calm authority on the ball will prove vital for his young team in their title run-in.
He became the club’s third recruit of the January window, following £26million Leandro Trossard and £21million Jakub Kiwior.

Those arrivals have allowed Albert Sambi Lokonga (Crystal Palace), Cedric Soares (Fulham) and Marquinhos (Norwich) to all go out on loan for the rest of the season.
But Jorginho’s signing will not affect Arsenal’s plans to launch a £90million summer move for West Ham skipper Declan Rice and they could also try again for Caceido, although not at the price they were prepared to pay this month. More

The Red Devils were forced into a deadline day swoop after Christian Eriksen was ruled out for three months with an ankle injury.
An agreement with Bayern Munich was reached this afternoon, although there is no option or obligation to buy.

Sabitzer, 28, agreed personal terms with United on the temporary switch before being seen at Munich airport on Tuesday evening ahead of his arrival at Old Trafford.
But 2005 Champions League winner Hamann, 49, has claimed Sabitzer could struggle to be an instant hit.

However, with the deal a straight loan until the end of the season, Sabitzer has no choice but to hit the ground running.
Hamann told Sky Sports: “He [Sabitzer] is a very energetic player, he has got a good engine, he can nick a goal, I think his best position is probably a bit further forward.
“I don’t think he is a defensive or a holding midfielder.
“I am pretty surprised Chelsea and Manchester United are interested because I am not sure he will help them straight away.

“He is a good squad player to have but whether he makes an immediate impact I’m not sure.”
Hamann continued: “He is certainly not a player to replace Christian Eriksen, I think he is a box-to-box player who has got a good engine, he’s very versatile, he played full-back at times.”
However, Hamann added that Sabitzer does have the potential to be a “very good player” for the Red Devils.
Chelsea were also rumoured to be interested in the Austrian, who joined Bayern 18 months ago from RB Leipzig.
But Hamann claimed Sabitzer does not have the same ability as Conor Gallagher, who has been linked with a move to Newcastle and Everton.
He added: “I think he [Sabitzer] would be a very good player for Manchester United to have but at the same time I am very surprised Chelsea are thinking of offloading Conor Gallagher and going for Sabitzer because I don’t think he is in Gallagher’s league.”
Sabitzer has played 24 games in all competitions for Bayern this season, but has started just seven Bundesliga games. More

Man Utd in talks for loan transfer of Lyon star after suffering Christian Eriksen injury blow

MANCHESTER UNITED are in shock talks for a loan move for Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, according to reports. The midfielder is being considered as the club look to find a replacement for the injured Christian Eriksen.

The Dane was left limping out of Old Trafford after a shocking challenge by Andy Carroll in Saturday’s FA Cup game between United and Reading.
It has now sparked a frantic deadline day search for a replacement.
Aouar is the latest name being linked to the club on a potential loan move.
Journalist Jonas Hen Shrag has tonight tweeted: “Manchester United have held early discussions regarding a potential loan deal for Houssem Aouar.

“Far from being done, and currently seems unlikely.”
Aouar has been at Lyon since 2016 but his impressive performances in the middle of the park has seen him consistently linked with moves away.
Arsenal pursued the 24-year-old in previous windows but have not been able to prise him away.
United’s attentions do not all centre on the French star and they still appear to be trying to land Marcel Sabitzer in the final hours of the window.

The Bayern Munich man has since been spotted in an airport as United try and get the deal over the line.
Eriksen is not expected back until late April at the earliest so Sabitzer could come straight into the team.
Erik ten Hag is said to be a fan of the Austrian and United considered signing him last summer. More

Lokonga arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2021 in a £17m deal from Anderlecht.
But he’s behind Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey in the pecking order, which has restricted him to just 14 Prem starts in 18 months.
And this season his chances have reduced even further with the majority of his minutes coming in the Europa League.
That’s despite Mohamed Elneny being injured for large parts of the campaign.

And he’ll now hope for further chances as he links up with ex-Gunners captain Patrick Vieira.

Lokonga told Palace’s website:  “I’m really excited – I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m really happy to join Crystal Palace. I want to go as far as possible with the team.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish said: “I would like to welcome Sambi to south London, and am pleased he has chosen to join Patrick’s squad for the rest of the season, after making an impressive start to life in English football.
“He has been on our radar for several years since his emergence at Anderlecht, and we very much look forward to his contribution as we push to climb the table.”
Mikel Arteta was quick to replace him with the £12million signing of Jorginho from Chelsea.
Jorginho became Arteta’s third signing of the window following the recent arrivals of Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior.
And he has the chance to win his first Premier League title with the Gunners five points clear of Man City with a game in hand. More
