Tottenham confirm signing of Pedro Porro in £42m transfer from Sporting Lisbon just minutes before deadline

TOTTENHAM have confirmed the signing of Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon.Spurs announced that the right-back had joined the club just 10 minutes before the transfer window slammed shut with a quirky social media post.

There is an obligation to buy the right-back for £37.3m in the summerCredit: Getty

He joins initially on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to buy at the end of the campaign.
The loan fee for Spanish international Porro will cost around £4.4million, and it will cost another £37.3m when they turn it permanent in the summer.
Manchester City, where Porro spent three seasons but never played, are due a windfall of around £10.2m when the move is made permanent in the summer.
That is due to a clause when they sold the defender to Sporting that entitled them to 30 per cent profit on his next transfer.
The transfer had seemed to be on the brink of collapsing before deadline day.
Sporting were reluctant to sanction the move until they were happy with the finances involved in the deal.
But those problems were ironed out, and Porro becomes Spurs’ second first-team signing of the month after Arnaut Danjuma’s arrival from Villarreal.
Speaking about his move to Tottenham, Pedro Porro said: “I feel great about the move. I really wanted to come here. It’s unique opportunity for me and I hope everything goes well.”

On him fitting in well to Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system, he added: “Yes, I think it will be a very good thing for me, and that’s also why I was so struck by the prospect of playing here.”
To make way for the incoming Spaniard, Matt Doherty sensationally had his contract mutually terminated so he could join Atletico Madrid.
Irishman Doherty, 31, was initially due to be borrowed by the La Liga giants.
But because fellow right wing-back Djed Spence was farmed out to Rennes, Spurs were at their limit for international loans.
Fifa rules state only eight players can be loaned abroad in a season.
Tottenham already were at that number due to Gio Lo Celso (Villarreal), Tanguy Ndombele (Napoli), Harry Winks (Sampdoria), Sergio Reguilon (Atletico Madrid), Destiny Udogie (Udinese), Bryan Gil (Sevilla), Joe Rodon and Spence (both Rennes) all temporarily being away from the club.
Doherty still had just under 18 months to go on his Spurs contract before both player and club agreed to terminate it.
SunSport understands Atleti boss Diego Simeone was not involved in the deal but that instead it was done at boardroom level.
The two clubs are believed to be on excellent terms ever since Spurs sold Kieran Trippier – another right wing-back – to Atletico in 2019.
Spence’s temporary switch to Rennes is only a straight loan as the 22-year-old bids for more game time, having made just six appearances and NO starts this season.

Tottenham also poached Jude Soonsup-Bell, 19, from Chelsea on a deal until June 2025, adding the England Under-19 striker to their development squad.
While Spurs youngster Harvey White, 21, was also loaned out to League One side Derby. More

‘Doesn’t belong on a football pitch’ – Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag RAGES at Andy Carroll after injuring Christian Eriksen

ERIK TEN HAG has torn into Andy Carroll for his reckless challenge that KO’d Christian Eriksen for at least three months. The Manchester United boss said the Reading striker’s actions did not belong on a football pitch.

And asked if the former Newcastle and Liverpool player deliberately set out to hurt his United stars, as he later ended up with a red card, Ten Hag was not letting him off the hook.
Ten Hag said: “I think it was quite clear what my thoughts were.”
Carroll scythed down Eriksen with a reckless challenge early in the second-half of United’s 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Reading on Saturday.
While he escaped punishment for that, Carroll would receive yellow cards and a subsequent red for fouls soon after on Tyrell Malacia and then Casemiro.

Ten Hag said: “I think football has to set restrictions that protect the players.
“What football wants is the best players to be available on the pitch.
“This is a tackle — and the two tackles after it — that don’t belong on a pitch, because there is a high risk of injuring your colleague.
“So it’s worse and I’m left wondering about that.”

The Red Devils boss added that he was still mystified how Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace was not booked for an elbow on Lisandro Martinez in United’s recent trip to Selhurst Park.
He said: “I’m also wondering more, when we were at Palace, when there was an elbow on Lisandro Martinez.
“I don’t believe there was even a whistle for a free-kick and I’m wondering about such things, because it’s a risk of injury for the player.”
Eriksen injured an ankle as he was felled by Carroll and United have confirmed  he will not be available until at least the end of April and maybe into the last month of the season, May.
It is a major blow for Ten Hag to lose the in-form Danish playmaker particularly with Donny van de Beek out for the rest of the season and Scott McTominay sidelined for over a fortnight with a muscle problem.
This is a tackle — and the two tackles after it — that don’t belong on a pitch, because there is a high risk of injuring your colleague.Erik ten Hag
Which is why he had a late deadline day scramble to get Bayern Munich’s Marcel Sabitzer.
Earlier in the day Ten Hag explained the reasons for needing 28-year-old Austrian international midfielder Sabitzer.
He said: “You can set the squad up but then in January, Donny is out for the rest of the season and Christian for part of the season and also Scott McTominay is not available for a week, two weeks, even longer. So we have a challenge there. We have quality players there, that is obvious, but the depth is not there anymore.”
Ten Hag knows Fred can make an impact in Eriksen’s place and has faith his combination with Casemiro that works so well for Brazil can also do the trick for United.
He said: “Fred’s playing together with Casemiro in the Brazil squad, that’s not the worst squad in the world.
“They have so many choices they can make, but they play together and that tells you something about the quality Fred has.”
They could pair up tonight in United’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest.
Despite a 3-0 advantage from the first leg at the City Ground, Ten Hag insists he is still going to field a strong side to ensure the momentum gathered from a run of 11 wins, one draw and one defeat in the last 13 games is maintained.
He said: “We have a perfect chance to go to Wembley and therefore we have to focus. It will be a strong team.
“We have momentum and want to keep the process going.

“Nottingham Forest are a good team they have real good depth in their squad, they can do things differently and we have to be prepared for that.”

Harry Redknapp still hangs out of his car window until 11pm on Transfer Deadline Day because he has ‘withdrawal’

HARRY REDKNAPP joked that he still hangs out of his car on deadline day because he has “withdrawal”.The ex-Tottenham and Portsmouth boss was renowned for giving interviews from behind the wheel during his managerial days, often on the final day of a transfer window.

Redknapp joined Jeremy Kyle live from his car
And Redknapp rolled back the years when he joined TalkTV earlier today.
That’s because despite being out of a job for more than six years, the 75-year-old joined Jeremy Kyle on his show… while sitting in his car.
Redknapp was asked why and he joked: “It’s withdrawal
“I come out here just out of habit and sit in the car all night to 11 o’clock hanging out the window… it’s something I’ve [always done].

“Sandra wanted me out. I’ve tried to transfer her in fact but I’ve had no takers at the moment.
“Even Barney the dog, I’m trying to put him on the market but nothing happening there so I’m just sitting here waiting for the phone to ring, really.”
Redknapp was known for finding a bargain as the clocked ticked towards to the deadline and said that Rafael van der Vaart’s move from Real Madrid to Tottenham in 2010 was probably his best piece of deadline day business.
But with market very different to when he was a manager, when asked whether the market is out of control, Redknapp said: “Absolutely.

“And it all seems to be going abroad, all to foreign clubs in different countries.”
And Redknapp claimed that fees clubs are now paying could be put to better use.
He added: “It is sad when you think, the hospitals you could buy and paint and build, it has gone absolutely barmy.
“If your club buys a player now for £15 or £20 million, you think he can’t be much good, he’s cheap.
“Unless you’re spending 50, 60 or whatever, you feel well whatever, he’s not really a big signing for us. It’s gone out of all proportion.£ More

Tottenham RIP UP Doherty’s contract as he joins Atletico Madrid on permanent transfer – but there’s a good reason why

TOTTENHAM mutually agreed to terminate Matt Doherty’s contract to allow him to join Atletico Madrid.Spurs had looked set to send the Irishman on a straight loan to Atletico.

But due to already having eight players farmed out internationally – the maximum according to Fifa rules – they instead allowed him to leave for nothing.
A Spurs statement read: “We have mutually agreed to the termination of Matt Doherty’s contract to enable him to join another club.
“We should like to thank Matt for his service and wish him well for the future.”
Doherty was in Madrid yesterday looking to tie up his switch to Atletico.

The Irishman did have 18 months remaining on his Spurs deal.
And now Doherty is expected to finalise a free transfer to Atletico.
In doing so he follows in the footsteps of previous Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier, who moved for £30million in 2019.
Doherty was set to become Spurs’ third-choice wing-back following the imminent arrival of Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon.

However, he is now set for a career reprieve after Atletico made a surprise loan bid – despite Diego Simeone supposedly not knowing who he is.
In 2016, and while still playing for Wolves, the right-back revealed he was a huge fan of Simeone’s Atletico side.
Doherty even posted about his admiration for the club on Twitter.
And with a transfer to Atletico now taking place, Doherty’s tweet from almost seven years ago has gone viral with fans of the Spanish giants. More

Fortunately for the midfielder, he WILL be available for the final.
That’s because suspensions count across all domestic competitions.
He’ll therefore miss the Premier League games against West Ham, Bournemouth and Liverpool before returning for the Wembley showdown on Sunday 26 February.
It was a horrific moment from one of the Mapgies’ top performers this season, who lunged in and stamped on Edozie.

Tierney didn’t send him off in real time, but after looking at the harrowing footage on the VAR monitor, he was left with no choice.
Despite Bruno’s moment of madness, it was still a night of celebration for Newcastle, who saw the game out despite playing the final moments with 10 men.
Having taken 1-0 lead into tonight’s clash, Sean Longstaff’s brace all-but secured their ticket to the final, even though Che Adams’ fine strike did cause some nervous moments.
Eddie Howe’s men will discover their opponents for the final tomorrow night with Manchester United hosting Nottingham Forest.
