Premier League accused of ‘cheating’ and ‘economic doping’ over transfers as Uefa are called to take action

PREM clubs united in fury after Spanish league bosses accused them of “cheating” financially – and demanded Uefa action against English football. In a double-pronged attack led by La Liga chief executive Javier Tebas, the Spaniards pointed to Prem dominance of the transfer window to claim English clubs are not playing fair.

Tebas, a long-term critic of the Prem, said: “We read about the ‘strength’ of the Premier League – but it is not like that at all.
“It is a competition based on millionaires funding LOSSES of the clubs, because their ordinary income is not enough for them.
“The British market is a doped market. Most of the clubs are economically doped.”
Chelsea’s potential £329.9m spend in January alone was more than £100m greater than ALL of the top flight clubs in Spain, Germany, Italy and France COMBINED.

Last month saw Prem sides splash out £815m according to football finance experts Deloitte, taking the total for the season to a staggering £2.78bn.
Around £1.7bn of that cash went to clubs outside England, effectively bankrolling the entire European football market.
Tebas, who accused the Prem of spending “barbaric amounts”, added: “This winter, Chelsea made almost half of the signings in the Premier League.
“It is a competition that has lost billions of pounds in the last few years.

“And this is financed with contributions from the patrons, in this case large American investors who finance at a loss.
“We recognise that commercially they have a higher turnover than us.
“But it is quite dangerous that the markets are doped, inflated, as has been happening in recent years in Europe.
“That can jeopardise the sustainability of European football. It is inflationary buying.”
His latest comments sparked private disbelief and anger from Prem clubs, with one insider suggesting: “I don’t know if it’s jealousy or hypocrisy but it’s gone too far.”
Spanish football remains embroiled in a cash crisis which has seen most of La Liga’s clubs agree to “mortgage” 25 years of central revenues while Real Madrid and Barcelona remain wedded to the breakaway European Super League project.
There is also an ongoing match fixing investigation with Spanish police probing 30 games.
Yet Tebas’ right-hand man, La Liga corporate director Javier Gomez, stuck the knife into English football – despite conflating the Prem and the Championship.
He said: “Between 2016 and 2021, the Premier League and the Championship lost £2.65bn and the owners and shareholders put in £3.1bn out of their own pockets.
“Essentially in England they are doping the clubs.
“They are injecting money not generated by the club for it to spend which puts the viability of the club at risk if the shareholder leaves.
“In our opinion that is cheating because it drags down the rest of the leagues.
“That is our fight, demanding that UEFA implements a new economic regulation that prevents the shareholder of a club from putting in more than a certain amount.
“And then Uefa must enforce this rule and sanction non-compliant clubs.”
Prem chiefs are understood to be furious about another needless and unprovoked attack from Madrid, especially as they believe Tebas has been embarrassed by his inability to rein in Real and Barca.
It is felt his ongoing diatribes are a distraction to turn attention away from the problems that beset the Spanish game and a signal of Tebas’ frustration at la Liga’s struggles to catch up with the Prem on and off the pitch.
Senior figures at the Prem’s headquarters near Paddington are also pointing to the lack of complaints about spending power when the market was controlled by Spain’s two giants.
Indeed, while Chelsea broke the British record to sign Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in a £107m deal, Barca and Real between them were the buyers in five of the seven more expensive transfers in history.
The difference is that the last of those big money deals – Real’s £130m signing of Eden Hazard FROM Chelsea – was in 2019, the summer before the pandemic.

It is the Prem that has led football’s economic recovery – indeed, arguably the only major nation that has bounced back completely.
Meanwhile Spanish football has struggled, partly because of the huge financial disparity between the big two and the rest compared with the English model of dispensing the £3.4bn annual broadcast payments. More

Chelsea set for huge transfer exodus with SEVEN first-team stars on chopping block after £606m spree

CHELSEA are set for a summer sales extravaganza – to help balance the books after their unprecedented spending spree.New Blues chief Todd Boehly has overseen deals which could add up to a staggering total £606m this season.

Chelsea star Marc Cucurella may also have to leave after the January splurgeCredit: Rex
While offering long-term contracts to stagger payments – in accounting terms, over up to eight years will offset the official cost of the deals – Chelsea do have to start shifting some excess players to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.
And the need to sell will be heightened if Chelsea do not get back into the top four and miss out on the minimum £80m income from TV and gate receipts of reaching the knockout round of next season’s Champions League.
Chelsea’s January splurge of up to £329.9m, capped by the British record £107m capture of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, was on top of the huge summer outlay.
It meant the Blues spent more last month than ALL the clubs in the other Big Five leagues – Spain, Germany, Italy and France – COMBINED.
    Read More on Chelsea
Fernandez’s fee plus salary will add around £19m per year to Chelsea’s outgoings, estimated to bring them to a likely paper “loss” of around £180m in 2022-2023.
Prem rules limit clubs to losses of £35m per season over three years, with Uefa regulations allowing clubs to lose £26.5m over the same period, set to rise to £90m from next term.

But accountancy loopholes and “allowable losses” of £30m each year for spending on youth and women’s football and community projects mean Chelsea’s likely figures would still, just, be inside the permitted Prem loss level.
And while they are on course to bust the Uefa limit by around £22m this season, Euro chiefs only expect around 15 per cent of any fines – PSG had to pay only £8.4m of the £56m punishment levied in September  – to be paid up front if clubs show they are taking steps to address the matter.

For Chelsea, that would mean selling the players who do not appear to have a future under Graham Potter – and it was notable that all seven of the players signed on full contracts last month were 22 or under.
Keeper Edouard Mendy, now second choice, summer defensive flop Kalidou Koulibaly, Hakim Ziyech, potentially N’Golo Kante, Marc Cucurella and home-grown midfielders Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are all potential discards.
Any money raised by the sales of Gallagher or Loftus-Cheek would also see their full fee go straight into the accounts to help balance the “amortised” fees owed for this season’s 15 signed players.
But without the Champions League income – Chelsea have already banked £82m including gate money this season – the finances will require significant sales.
It cranks up the pressure on Potter and his new recruits, currently 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United in 10th position, to turn the domestic season round – unless they earn qualification by winning the Champions League.

Ander Herrera seals permanent Athletic Bilbao transfer from PSG – and ex-Man Utd star’s move helps out Nottingham Forest

He’s signed an 18 month contract until 2024.
Herrera is currently in his second spell with Bilbao having had three years there before signing for Manchester United in 2014.
The Spain international would spend five seasons at Old Trafford, winning the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League.
And his form at United landed him a move to PSG, where he enjoyed a successful time of things, lifting seven domestic trophies in three years.

But his permanent switch to Bilbao ends his stay in the French capital.
Although his move helped out Nottingham Forest in their pursuit of PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
That’s because Herrera’s transfer allowed the Ligue 1 leaders to loan Navas out to the City Ground.
And FIFA rules state that clubs can’t have more than eight players over the age of 21 loaned out at the same time with PSG already at the limit.

He has scored 31 goals in 27 appearances for the Cityzens already and is one of the most-sought after strikers on the planet.
Haaland and a host of other footballing stars were rocked in May 2022 when their super-agent Mino Raiola passed away aged 54.
But before the Italian died, he had asked his close ally, Brazilian lawyer Rafaela Pimenta, to take over the reins of his business.
Now she is the one who looks after the best interests of Haaland and the rest of the iconic names the company has on-board.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
This week she sat down with Spanish publication AS to discuss the future of the hotshot – and she could not help hinting at a future to switch to LaLiga as she highlighted her and Raiola’s good relationship with Barcelona and their president Joan Laporta.
Pimenta said: “I always say that Laporta can’t ask me for anything in football, he’s not fair, because he knows I’m going to say ‘yes’.
She did move to quickly ease the fears of City fans as she insisted that he is “married” to the club, whom he is under contract to until 2027.
And then she revealed what she thought Haaland’s transfer value was, and with so many additional aspects including fans, digital content, notoriety and sponsors, she believes it tops the £1BN mark.

Primenta added: “I know that nobody is going to pay 700 million for a player, but I am very clear that the value that Erling adds when he arrives at a club is immense, at least 1,000 million.”
For 18 years, Pimenta was Raiola’s right-hand woman – working by his side and learning the ropes.
She was entrusted as a vital cog in his affairs, as well as a brain to lean on for advice.
Their paths first crossed in around 1998 at launch event for a small Sao Paulo club called Guaratingueta, which she helped set up with Brazilian legends Rivaldo and Cesar Sampaio.
At the time, she was also a university professor of international law when she was lured into the world of football.
While before that, Pimenta worked for an antitrust team set up by Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
But the chance meeting between Pimenta and Raiola was the beginning of a fruitful relationship – and they would go on to work for 18 years together, before his untimely death. More

‘It STINKS of someone who hasn’t watched him’ – Rio Ferdinand slams Paul Merson over claiming Sabitzer is ‘panic buy’

Merson wasn’t impressed with the Red Devils’ signing as he labelled the midfielder as a “panic buy” and a “fourth-rate player”.
Merson told Sky Sports: “He doesn’t get in the Bayern Munich team, as the manager just said. He’s way off that.
“Their two in midfield is cemented but if he was that good, he’d be pushing. So again it goes back to panic. There was no interest in him on January 1st. Now, it’s a panic buy.
“Eriksen has just got injured. It’s a panic. You’re buying fourth-choice Bayern Munich players. For me, I’m not sure about that. He doesn’t get into the Bayern Munich team.

“If I’m a Manchester United fan or a Chelsea fan, I’d be looking and going, he doesn’t get anywhere near Bayern’s first team.”
But Ferdinand strongly disagrees with the Arsenal hero’s comments as he said they “stink of someone who hasn’t seen him play”.
The legendary defender insists Sabitzer is an ideal replacement for Eriksen after a “sensational” seven-year stint at RB Leipzig.
The ex-England international admits the 28-year-old “hasn’t tore it up” at Bayern since his arrival in 2021 but that is due to the immense competition he faces in the pecking order.

Ferdinand told Vibe with FIVE: “If I was trying to get a short-term replacement for Eriksen at the drop of a hat, Sabitzer is the player I would get.
“I watched a hell of a lot of this player when he was at RB Leipzig and he was sensational.
“He was integral to everything they did. Yes, he’s gone to Bayern and hasn’t tore it up there or become a regular but the players he’s behind are big, household names.
“He will be a really good signing for Man United. He’s an experienced player who has played in big games, Champions League games.

“Manchester United couldn’t have done any better, I don’t think.” More
