Arsenal fans all say same thing about Granit Xhaka after Maupay squares up to him during Everton defeat

ARSENAL fans are all saying the same thing about Granit Xhaka after Neal Maupay squared up to him in the 1-0 defeat to Everton. Tempers flared late in the game as the French striker clashed with Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The Gunners left-back was dragged to the floor by Maupay, who was then confronted by many of Zinchenko’s team-mates.
Xhaka led the charge up to him and given the Swiss midfielder’s fiery reputation many were expecting a bust-up.
However, he surprised everyone by attempting to calm the opponent down before dragging an angry Zinchenko away from the situation.
The Ukrainian and Maupay both ended up getting yellow cards for their actions with boss Mikel Arteta reportedly pushing his fuming star away from confrontation again at full-time.

Fans had their say on Xhaka’s behaviour, one said: “CANNOT BELIEVE MY EYES, watching Granit Xhaka calming down Neal Maupay. What a difference a few years makes.”
Another said: “Xhaka has changed. If Maupay did that to him last season he’s getting hit with a swift right hook.”
A third reacted: “Xhaka has grown up… two seasons ago he’d have headbutted Maupay.”
One Arsenal supporter jokingly suggested they miss his previous style: “The old Xhaka would’ve thrown Maupay into the ground. I don’t know if I’m sad or proud to witness this.”

This is not the first time Maupay and the Gunners have had their differences on the pitch.
During his time at Brighton he injured Bernd Leno sparking a huge brawl at full-time.
He then went on to score the winner that day and called for Arsenal players to “learn humility”.
Xhaka has taken up a leadership role in the squad this season and previously calmed down Gabriel Magalhaes away at Leeds. More

Fans ‘call time on Jorginho’s Arsenal career’ as they concede just a MINUTE after he comes on following £12m transfer

FANS have been left unimpressed with Jorginho following his debut for Arsenal. The Italian had the worst possible start as Everton took the lead just one minute after he entered the field.

Jorginho made his debut for the club, coming on as a substitute for Thomas Partey in the 59th minute.
But James Tarkowski headed the home side ahead with what turned out to be the winning goal of the match in the 60th minute.
And fans are now brutally calling time on his Arsenal career, as one Tweeted: “Lmao Jorginho comes on, and a minute later they concede, he’s brought the Chelsea curse😭.”
A second wrote: “10 million for Jorginho, and he’s sabotaging their title race.”

A third commented: “Jorginho getting blamed for today’s loss.”
A fourth said: “Jorginho on for about 8 seconds, and Arsenal immediately concede…”
A fifth added: “Jorginho getting cooked on his first appearance 😭🤣.”
While some supporters were curious as to why the former Chelsea player replaced Partey.

Many thought that he should have replaced Granit Xahka instead.
One said: “If Arteta subs off Xhaka instead of Partey, we don’t concede that corner and, therefore, the goal.”
A second added: “Arteta made the wrong sub taking Partey off. Xhaka needed to go out, not Partey.”
Jorginho joined the club on deadline day in a £12million move from Chelsea to provide more depth to the club’s midfield options.
The defeat for Arsenal now means that their lead at the top of the table could be cut to just two points should Manchester City beat Tottenham tomorrow. More

Arsenal Ratings: Day to forget for Odegaard and White with Saka one of few stars to shine against tough Everton

ARSENAL suffered a shock defeat to Everton in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of the club. The new man in the dugout guided the Toffees to a huge win in his first match with James Tarkowski rising highest from a corner to head home the decisive goal.

The Gunners could now see their five point lead at the top of the Premier League table cut by Manchester City if they can pick up something against Tottenham tomorrow.
It was a day to forget for normal heroes Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard, who were both subbed off as the team chased a goal.
Jorginho made his debut, replacing Martinelli after just 59 minutes, but his Arsenal career started horribly as his new side conceded a minute after he entered the field.
Bukayo Saka was one of few Arsenal players who can leave Goodison Park with their head held high.

Here’s how SunSport’s Mark Irwin rated the Gunners’ players performances at Goodison Park.
    Aaron Ramsdale – 6
Brave early block from Calvert-Lewin showed that Arsenal were ready for the physical challenge.
Calm assurance was crucial when Everton tried to turn the screw but never looked comfortable on corners and that proved his undoing.
    Most read in Football
    Ben White – 5
Sloppy first-half pass almost led to an Everton goal and struggled to keep on top of the lively McNeil which meant he wasn’t able to get forward very much.
    William Saliba – 6
Crucial back post blocks to deny Onana and then Tarkowski, this was probably the sternest physical test of the young Frenchman’s career.
    Gabriel Magalhaes – 7
Relished his aerial battle with Calvert-Lewin and Onana but was fortunate that his slip did not lead to a goal when Doucoure was left with a free header which he sent wide.
    Oleksandr Zinchenko – 6
He might have started the game at left-back but spent most of the game in central midfield and was always looking to play those slide rule passes between the lines.
    Thomas Partey – 6
The glue that holds everything together for Arsenal, he shrugged off a rib injury to provide the link between defence and attack again.
But clearly wasn’t 100 per cent and had to come off as Arteta looked for more control in midfield.
    Granit Xhaka – 6
Now that Arsenal dominate possession so much, Xhaka is free to show more of his creative side instead of having to make those risky challenges on the edge of his own area.
But won’t be happy that so much of this game passed him by.
    Martin Odegaard – 5
Not one of his best games as he struggled to shake off Everton’s close marking.
Squandered a decent chance when he blazed over and wasn’t strong enough to hold off Tarkowski when the Everton centre-half headed his team ahead.
    Bukayo Saka – 7
Buffeted from pillar to post again but kept coming back for more and was unfortunate not to break the deadlock when his volley was cleared off the line by Coady.
    Eddie Nketiah – 5
No one can question his work-rate or commitment, but when Arsenal were crying out for a cool finish he slashed his only shot of the game into the crowd.
    Gabriel Martinelli – 5
Constantly boxed in by Everton doubling up on him and is starting to look as though he could be running out of steam. No surprise when he was replaced by Trossard on the hour.
    Substitutes:
Leandro Trossard (for Martinelli 59 minutes) -5
Had a couple of late chances to rescue a point but couldn’t find a killer finish and a couple of poor corners didn’t help his team-mates.
    Jorginho (for Partey 59 minutes) – 5
On for his Arsenal debut, he was supposed to give his new team more control but within a minute of his introduction they were a goal down.
Fabio Vieira (for Odegaard 77 minutes) – 5
Rare run-out for the lightweight Portuguese but the game had already got away from Arsenal by then.

Takehiro Tomiyasu (for White 85 minutes) – 5

Man Utd manager reveals why Anthony Martial is missing Crystal Palace game after fresh setback following injury return

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Erik ten Hag has revealed why Anthony Martial was missing from the matchday squad to face Crystal Palace. The 27-year-old has been plagued with injuries this season.

He has missed 18 games this term, mostly through muscular injuries.
Martial was due to return to action for Man Utd on Saturday in the home Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
But the winger has suffered a fresh setback and missed the game.
The latest injury blow will not be good news for Martial, who will have been hoping to impress new boss Erik ten Hag after returning from a loan spell at Sevilla last summer.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
He scored in his last appearance, opening the scoring in the 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final win over Nottingham Forest.
Manager Ten Hag has revealed the reasoning behind Martial’s absence.
The manager told MUTV ahead of kick-off: “He had a set back from the game when he returned.
“He dropped a little bit back. We have to wait, we have to be patient, not force it.”

Martial last played 90 minutes in the Premier League on January 27, 2021, against Sheffield United.
In fact, the last time Martial played back-to-back 90 minutes games in the league was on January 12 and 17 that same year.
Martial has previously claimed that he is stuck in a “vicious circle” due to the lack of game time.
He said in the France Football interview: “I am not irreproachable.
“When people say that I lack consistency, it’s true.
“When I have my place, it often goes well, but when I’ve been used less, it is true that my performance has not been the same.
“It’s a vicious circle: I’m less efficient because I play less, and therefore I play even less.
“When it’s like that, I can sometimes drop out a bit.
“A player like Cavani, he’s at 3,000 per cent even when given few minutes.” More

Everton 1 Arsenal 0: Sloppy Gunners suffer huge blow to title hopes as Sean Dyche’s new-look Toffees grab deserved win

SEAN DYCHE started his Everton reign with a bang – and put a big dent in Arsenal’s title bid.The former Burnley boss saw two of his former Turf Moor players, Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski, combine for the second-half set-piece goal that decided the game.

Victory lifted the Toffees out of the bottom three ahead of the later kick offs and the performance renewed hope that a torrid season on and off the pitch could yet end without the disaster of relegation.
The Gunners’ second Premier League defeat of the season, and the manner of it, will have alarm bells ringing.
Mikel Arteta’s team were outmuscled and outwitted by committed and intense hosts who thoroughly deserved their victory.
Emotions spilled over in stoppage time after a clash between Oleksandr Zinchenko and Neal Maupay led to a scuffle.

But otherwise Goodison Park was alive with passion of the right kind, at least as far as the home team and fans were concerned.
Everton were up for it from the start.
Vitalii Mykolenko’s robust challenge on Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard set the tone for a physical and committed display by the home team.
They restricted the visitors to a tame Thomas Partey shot until Eddie Nketiah mishit a shot from a narrowish angle.

Soon afterwards, Everton should have taken the lead. Twice.
First Dominic Calvert-Lewin failed to convert a cross by Amadou Onana after the midfielder’s barnstorming run into the box.
Then Abdoulaye Doucoure sent a free header badly wide from a McNeil cross.
Everton’s intensity and organisation meant it was going to take something special to score against them and Bukayo Saka almost supplied it. But his goalward volley from an Oleksandr Zinchenko cross was cleared by Conor Coady.
Calvert-Lewin headed Seamus Coleman’s across the goal and wide in first-half stoppage time.
Arsenal could not have complained if they had gone into the break behind.
Shortly after it, Aaron Ramsdale kept out a deflected Idrissa Gueye shot which would have been ruled out for offside in the build-up.
Odegaard should have done better when teed up by Nketiah, and the leaders were made to pay on the hour.
Everton had caused problems from corners before, and this time Tarkowski met McNeil’s delivery with a header that went back across Ramsdale and into the net.
Arsenal could not find an equaliser.
The substitution of Odegaard, so inspirational this season, said a lot.
Substitute Leandro Trossard at least forced Jordan Pickford into a save but was guilty of wasting another decent opportunity to shoot.

Arsenal were running out of ideas and Zinchenko was reduced to shooting from ridiculous range, before shooting over from a corner routine.
But it was Everton’s less elaborate set-piece that proved crucial after they stood firm in six minutes of stoppage time.

At first glance there appeared to be little contact but replays showed that Gueye’s finger managed to go into the 21-year-old’s eye.
Saka fell to the floor and looked in the pain as he rubbed his left pupil with his shirt.
He eventually got back to his feet and managed to continue playing.
It led to the Everton fans booing Saka every time he got the ball, seemingly unaware of the nasty-looking injury he did actually suffer.

Seeing the England winger soldier on was a huge relief for Mikel Arteta as he looked to maintain his side’s five-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table.
But they came up short and ended up losing 1-0 to a James Tarkowski goal to throw the title race wide open.
There were huge protests at Goodison Park ahead of kick-off that were directed at the Everton board.
A plane even flew over the ground claiming it was the hierarchy’s time to resign.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have their own concerns off the pitch with Arteta urging Saka to sign a new contract at the club with the player’s deal expiring in just 18 months.

According to Sport, United understand the Blaugrana’s position but have still expressed an interest in case the exit door creaks open.
This comes at a time when the winger is becoming increasingly unsettled at the Nou Camp due to the lack of minutes.
The Spain international was considered the next rising star when he made his senior debut at the tender age of 17 in 2020.
However, persistent knee problems have hampered Fati’s development.

Although the Spaniard has already played 30 times this season, he has only started nine times and completed a full match just twice.
As a result, United and other Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on the forward.
In fact, the Red Devils pose as the likeliest candidate to complete a potential deal.
The Manchester giants are hoping Barcelona’s financial problems would help their cause and dramatically reduce his astronomical release clause.

    Kick-off – Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    46. The second half at Old Trafford is underway courtesy of the game’s only goalscorer, Bruno Fernandes.
The Manchester United captain kicks us off as United go about looking to cement a 13th straight home win.
    First half facts and figures
It’s been a first period dominated by the home side, but Crystal Palace’s two attempts both came in the final six minutes of the half.

    Half-time – Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
Andre Marriner calls time on an intriguing first 45 minutes.
Manchester United lead but, for all their dominance, only by one.
Bruno Fernandes’ early penalty, awarded by VAR after a handball from Will Hughes is the difference.
The Red Devils were electric for the opening half hour, but Palace grew into the game in the final ten minutes.
There’s still plenty of life in this contest.
Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace – Mitchell yellow card

    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace

And remarkably, Manchester United will be happy to see it arrive.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    43. The Eagles are growing in confidence here as half-time approaches.
Schlupp finally finds some room in the United half and turn towards goal, letting fly from 25 yards effort.
The Ghanaian’s attempt skids off the turf and bounces awkwardly in front of De Gea, who does very well in the end to turn the ball away to safety.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    41. While the Wan-Bissaka and Antony partnership is blossoming going forward, it is raising questions from a defensive perspective.
Olise and Mitchell are enjoying themselves on the rare occasions that they get to break, and that’s mainly because the United right-back is often left isolated by his teammate.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    40. Out of nowhere, a chance for Crystal Palace!
Olise swings out a corner from the left, and Richards arrives unmarked to connect with a header.
It’s a slightly mistimed leap from the defender, who ends up getting under the ball to send his effort high and wide of goal from five yards out.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    38. New United signing Marcel Sabitzer is also warming-up along the touchline, and is given a warm welcome by the home fans.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    36. When you think of Manchester United midfielders bursting forward into the penalty area, you think of Paul Scholes, Bryan Robson, Bobby Charlton… and Fred.
Somehow, the Brazilian is the furthest player forward as Weghorst cuts a clever cross back from the byline, instinctively firing wide of the near post.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    34. Olise manages to find himself in possession and in the penalty area.
The former Reading man finds himself without options though, and is eventually forced into going back to Mitchell.
The left-back loops a cross in, but it’s easily claimed by De Gea.
At the moment, Palace are short of a threat in attack with Edouard not seeing much of the ball.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    32. Casemiro gives it some Antony in the penalty area with a back-heeled flick through the legs of Clyne.
Credit to the Palace right-back, however, who quickly recovers to nudge the ball behind for a corner.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    30. Half hour gone at Old Trafford, and it’s fair to say that this has been one-way traffic.
The hosts have registered eight attempts at goal, Palace have yet to have one.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    28. One of the biggest cheers of the afternoon so far is reserved for substitute Jadon Sancho, who is out warming up for the first time.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    27. A Rashford effort from a tight angle is comfortably pushed away by Guaita.
The opportunity comes after United win the ball back high up the pitch with Fernandes setting the forward off into the area with a smart pass.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    25. The Palace players are working hard to get themselves back into this one, but their mild attacking threat is only coming about via set-pieces.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    23. Patient build-up from United on this occasion eventually sees the ball chipped up for Weghorst.
The United striker is snuffed out by relentless pressure from Richards and Guehi.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    21. Shaw and Rashford execute a smart one-two that leaves the left-back bursting through the middle.
Doucoure eventually gets a foot in to turn it behind for a corner, but the United onslaught shows no sign of letting up.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    20. Mitchell catches Casemiro with a heavy challenge on the near touchline, and is fortunate to escape a booking.
The Palace left-back, normally such a cool customer, is beginning to make a habit of some rashly-timed tackles.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    19. Rashford bursts through to reach Shaw’s pass, only to find he had set off too soon. Offside.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    18. A cleverly-worked free-kick from Olise threatens to play Schlupp in behind the United defence, but Varane quickly gets back to cover and cut out.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    16. Good stuff from Mitchell, who breaks forward and skips back inside Antony.
Bad stuff from Mitchell, who immediately falls flat on his face after impressively doing the aforementioned hard work.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    15. The game has been played firmly in Palace’s half ever since those opening two minutes.
Just as they did on Wednesday, full-backs Wan-Bissaka and Shaw are getting themselves very high up the field.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    13. Weghost! Fine save by Guaita!
The towering striker almost doubles United’s lead with a looping header from the corner, only to find Palace’s goalkeeper in fine form with a fingertip save.
    Man Utd 1-0 Crystal Palace
    12. United continue to press forward.
Antony and Wan-Bissaka’s relationship on the right is beginning to blossom too, and the pair combine to win a corner.
