Tottenham 1 Man City 0: Spurs do bitter rivals Arsenal HUGE favour as record-breaker Kane dents City titles hopes

IT’S a funny old game, as the second highest goalscorer in Tottenham’s history often used to note. Eighteen months ago, Harry Kane was begging for a transfer to Manchester City, yet here he was overhauling the great Jimmy Greaves as the most productive filler of onion bags this famous old club has ever known.

And it was funny that the England captain should score his landmark 267th Tottenham goal against Pep Guardiola’s City.
And funny, if you’re not a Spurs fan, that his goal might play a part in handing the Premier title to Arsenal.
Still, this was a mighty achievement for Kane. These historic records do not fall with great regularity in age where there are so few long-serving players.
Kane is a throwback. Even his failed escape attempt was charmingly naive.

“How are we going to force this move then?”
“Let’s do an interview with Gary Neville while playing a round of golf, that should do the trick.”
It didn’t work, of course, and City didn’t force the issue after an initial bid was rejected because they were confident of landing Erling Haaland 12 months later anyway.
Kane’s strike was also his 200th Premier League goal, he stands only eight behind Wayne Rooney in second place on that list.

Although for those who remember football existed before the Premier League, Greaves’ record of 357 English top-flight goals looks out of sight even to the 29-year-old Kane.
The most extraordinary thing about Kane is that he is a very long way from being a mere goal poacher.
Increasingly, his assist count and his ability to drop deep and influence play has been as impressive as his scoring.
Less than a minute after Kane had side-footed past Ederson to hand Spurs a 15th-minute lead, and the big screens read ‘Congratulations Harry – 267’ – Kane barged Bernardo Silva off the ball to win possession and earned another massive roar.
There is still some debate about whether the Greaves record should have read 268 rather than 266, as he scored twice in a Charity Shield and nobody has ever known whether that fixture is competitive or a friendly.
Kane, of course, has never played in the annual match between the champions and the FA Cup holders because Spurs haven’t won either competition since he was born.
He will surely pass that slightly higher figure, even if this does turn out to be his final season in a lillywhite shirt.
Kane wanted to join City to win silverware. Instead, he has so far had to settle for individual accolades – Golden Boots at the World Cup and in the Premier League as well as the capture of Greaves’ record.

This result – finished off with ten men after the late sending off of Cristian Romero – increased Tottenham’s chances of Champions League football next season, as City’s hoodoo at the new White Hart Lane continued.
Remarkably, Guardiola’s men have lost five out of five here, without scoring a single goal.
Arsenal’s defeat at Everton on Saturday means City remain just five points behind the leaders with a trip to the Emirates coming up on Wednesday week.
But Guardiola’s famously hyperactive mind seems especially restless right now. His ‘Pep roulette’ routine was in full flow with Kevin De Bruyne benched for the opening hour – and it cost City.
Antonio Conte was not here to witness Kane’s historic moment. The Spurs boss remains in Italy, recovering from an operation to remove his gallbladder.
But Tottenham didn’t seem to miss his frenetic touchline cheerleading. Under the charge of Conte’s assistant, Cristian Stellini, they were absolutely
Kane’s moment arrived when Rodri produced an unusually sloppy pass on the edge of his own area, aimed at full-back Rico Lewis.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg pounced to rob the kid and thread a pass through, which Kane slotted into the far corner and spark jubilation.

Kane was never likely to rest on his and his challenge on Bernardo instantly proved as much.
Haaland’s most notable moment came when he was cleaned out by Cristian Romero, Tottenham’s gloriously old-school Argentinian centre-half.
City dominated possession, Jack Grealish bent a shot wide and Riyad Mahrez twanged the crossbar with a firecracker.
But City only really imposed themselves once Guardiola decided he might be an idea to bring on his best player, De Bruyne, on the hour.
Soon the Belgian was feeding Grealish for a shot deflected over by Eric Dier, and then Alvarez, whose rising shot went narrowly wide.
At the other end, though, Kane was threatening a second. He slid in at the back post but couldn’t quite connect with a low Ivan Perisic centre, then he dragged a shot wide, before he ploughed through two defenders and was denied by an onrushing Ederson blocking with his body.

Romero chopped down Grealish for his second yellow card in the 87th minute but Spurs held firm.
Kane may never win a trophy with this club but his place in the pantheon of Tottenham greats is always assured.

‘£100m defender’ – Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher left stunned by Man City star Jack Grealish’s ‘new role’

GARY NEVILLE and Jamie Carragher have been left shocked with the amount of defending Jack Grealish has been doing against Tottenham. The England star made the £100m switch to Manchester City in 2021 and was signed to deliver goals and assists.

But goal contributions have generally been hard to come by for Grealish.
And in the two games against Spurs his defensive work has been highlighted.
After the game at the Etihad Stadium last month, Patrick Davidson asked Grealish about a tackle he made on Son Heung-min.
The winger responded: “I know what you’re talking about but it’s never a good sign when that’s the highlight of a winger’s match!”

Regardless, Grealish is still keeping up with his duties tracking back and produced three notable pieces of defending in the first half in North London.
And it didn’t go unnoticed from the Sky Sports duo.
After making one fine tackle on Dejan Kulusevski, Neville said: “We’re going to be showing Jack Grealish’s defensive work again I think at the moment, three times he’s been forced to charge back.”
Grealish then went down injured later on in the half and commentator Martin Tyler also referred to his defensive work.

He joked: “It’s probably all that defending he’s been doing.”
Despite Grealish’s hard work, he could do nothing to stop England colleague Harry Kane from opening the scoring and becoming Spurs record goalscorer in the process.
But fans have been reacting to his new-found role on social media.
One said: “If Jack Grealish makes one more tackle Pep’s gonna turn him into a left back.”
A second responded: “Jack Grealish is our best defender this game and I’m not even joking.”

A third chimed in with: “Jack Grealish’s defensive work rate is unreal for a winger.”
Another said: “Grealish defensive work rate against spurs… it moves me.” More

Conte’s right hand man was raised in Italy and spent his teenage years playing for Novara and Spal before making the switch to Serie C2 outfit Ternana in October 1996.
Stellini inspired Ternana to Serie B promotion two years after signing for the club, and by 2002, the Italian coach was making his Serie A debut for Como against Empoli.
However, Cristian announced himself to the world when he signed for Juventus in 2003 but unfortunately, a serious leg injury only saw him feature twice before being sold to Genoa.

Erik ten Hag urged to sign former Man Utd star to pair with Rashford on a FREE transfer this summer

FORMER Manchester United defender Danny Simpson has urged the club to re-sign one of their former players. The right-back, who played eight times for the Red Devils, believes their is a player with just six months left on his current deal that would be a perfect addition to the squad.

Simpson thinks Erik ten Hag should look at bringing in Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.
The 30-year-old played just four times for Man Utd during a two season spell at the club, one of which was spent on loan at Cardiff.
Zaha was signed for a reported £10million but fell out of favour under then manager David Moyes.
He was then sold back to Crystal Palace where he has since impressed over a number of seasons for the Eagles.

Simpson is confident he would link up well with Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford.
The Premier League winner with Leicester told Stadium Astro: “He [Zaha] can go wherever he likes especially on a free transfer in the summer.
“I feel like Wilf plays better when he is the main man.
“I would bring him back here [Man Utd].

“If you’re looking at Marcus Rashford as the No.9 and Wilfried on the left, that is some firepower.
“It was Sir Alex Ferguson who signed him then he left. Moyes obviously came in and it didn’t work out.
“I do genuinely believe if Sir Alex was the manager when he played we would have seen a different Wilfried Zaha at Manchester United.”
Simpson also suggests that Liverpool should go in for him due to their struggles this season.
Zaha has played 20 times this season, finding the back of the net on six occasions.
Last term, he was more prolific, scoring 15 goals in 37 games.
Zaha has been linked with transfers to Arsenal, Chelsea, Roma and Barcelona.

Man Utd Treble winner has finally ‘stopped feeling like a fraud’ over 1999 medal as he turns hand to management

HE’S gone from the “fraud” of Manchester United’s 1999 Treble winners to the lord of his hometown club. And the forgotten midfielder of arguably Alex Ferguson’s greatest squad is now hoping to build a dynasty of his own.

Football couldn’t be much different from the Red Devils than the sixth tierCredit: Not known, clear with picture desk
The ex-England Under-21 star was at Old Trafford for three years.
That’s one more than the time it’s taken him to lift Scarborough Athletic into the sixth-tier.
And although he might be out of mind from United’s golden era, he could be remembered forever at his part-time club if their rise continues.
The former West Brom stalwart, 44, insists the dream of reaching the EFL is achievable – 16 years after the original Scarborough club was liquidated.

    Step forward, Jonathan Greening.
He once admitted feeling like a “fraud” for picking up a Champions League medal when United completed the Treble with a last-gasp turnaround triumph over Bayern Munich.
It’s a different world, of course, in National League North, where Scarborough have surpassed expectations by sitting fifth following promotion via the Northern Premier League play-offs.
And in a way that change is emphasised by Greening swapping the clean-cut look of his Prem days for a beard and casual attire.

He’s also just as ambitious amid Scarborough’s developing years as he was during United’s peak period.
He told the Mirror: “When I got the opportunity to take over here, I simply couldn’t turn it down.
“My mum, dad, brothers and sisters still live in the town and it just felt right.
“The club is trying to build something special, with its roots bedded in the community.
“We’re fan-owned, so we can’t spend massive amounts of money, but we have a tight group of players with a good spirit and the momentum of being promoted has spilled over into this season.
“It’s not an ego trip – since retiring as a player in 2014, I’ve worked at Nottingham Forest with the Under-21s, York City with the Under-18s and at the i2i academy in York for more than six years.”
But despite his pedigree, he added: “Sometimes the players don’t listen to me, but I’m trying to give something back to football because the game has been good to me.
“I had a great career, lived the dream and now I’m managing my home-town club, so why should I complain?” More

The Stamford Bridge stalemate means Chelsea have just one win in their last six league games, mounting further pressure on boss Potter, who continues to struggle to get a tune out of his team.
Germany manager Flick was in attendance – but his presence was to most likely keep an eye on Kai Havertz ahead of the upcoming international break.
Havertz started and played a full 90 minutes up top, and even saw an effort hit the post.
Germany play Peru and Belgium in March, and Flick is keen to shake up his squad following last year’s World Cup group stage exit.

Nonetheless, Flick’s presence has left Chelsea fans all saying the same thing: Flick to become the new Blues boss and turn Havertz into prime Robert Lewandowski.
That would be a massive help for Chelsea, who have been goal-shy so far this season.
One fan said: “Hansi Flick at Chelsea immediately.
“Tears when he turns Havertz into prime Lewandowski, Madueke into prime Robben, Mason Mount into prime Muller, put Ziyech on steroids, and Kepa becomes prime Neuer.”

Klopp underestimated just how bad Liverpool mess is – the big question now is IF he can sort it out rather than when

EVERYONE has severely underestimated the size of Liverpool’s problems. Unfortunately, so did the manager.Jurgen Klopp, a brilliant football coach, increasingly looks like someone who has run out of answers and basically, run out of steam.

Liverpool have been woeful since the World Cup breakCredit: PA

Not since 2011 under Roy Hodgson has a Liverpool team looked in such a mess and over this next month, it will need something extraordinary to get the club back into shape.
You can understand why Klopp was at a loss to explain how his team started off so pathetically by gifting Wolves – who in fairness played very well – two goals in the first 12 minutes.
You can understand why Klopp remains cheesed off with owners FSG for not giving him the huge sums of cash compared to other clubs.
Equally, Klopp also has to understand that he has been given a bit of money in the last 12 months.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Instead, he chose to refresh the team’s attack when it was blindingly obvious that central midfield was the number one priority.
Liverpool bought Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, along with a few others, in deals which could cost up to £200m.
But you only have to look at the last three away Premier League losses – 3-0 at Wolves, 3-0 at Brighton and 3-1 at Brentford – to see the urgent issues are elsewhere than attack.
At his pre-match press conference, Klopp jokingly said he did not want to speak about Chelsea’s transfer spending because his lawyer was not around.

At his post-match press conference at Molineux, Klopp chose not to answer a question from a journalist who has a long history of covering Liverpool.
The German, who has enjoyed thousands of positive stories written about him over his seven-and-half years, claimed he did not like an article written by this reporter.
But it seems Klopp may have been thinking about another piece in the week, written by a different journalist.
Also, Klopp’s refusal to answer the question was edited out of the press conference video for the club’s official YouTube channel.
So that sums up Liverpool right now. A bit confused and all over the place.
Incredibly, they have already conceded more goals than last season’s 26.
On Saturday, Liverpool were a mess from the start and could have conceded two even before Joel Matip’s fifth minute own goal which came after Hwang Hee-chan attempted to square the ball.
Craig Dawson smashed in the second seven minutes later after yet more terrible defending.
And despite a better performance from Liverpool in the second half, Ruben Neves delivered a classy third after Adama Traore tore down the right.
Liverpool’s next run of games is potentially disastrous.
In seven days it’s the Merseyside derby against Everton, followed by a trip to Newcastle and then an away game at Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Klopp, at the very least, needs all his injured players back – even though that may not be enough.
Here, we look at the problems Klopp faces around the squad.
GOALKEEPERAlisson is not having his best season but clearly not the worst performer by any means.
    DEFENCE
What a complete mess, as summed up by this shocking display. Virgil van Dijk has not been great this season, but they are still better with him in the team.
With Ibrahima Konate also injured, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip faced Wolves and could not have played any worse. Matip suffered his worst game for the club.
Andy Robertson has not been at his best, as proved when he failed to cut out a free-kick which led to the second.
As for Trent Alexander-Arnold, he will do well to get into the next England squad.
    MIDFIELD
A complete disaster area. They need not just one or two new players, but three. A proper reset. The players are either too old or too young.
Fabinho was ill for the trip to Wolves but that was no miss as his form has dropped off a cliff. Jordan Henderson, too, has struggled.
Stefan Bajcetic looks a cracking prospect and was Liverpool’s best player even though he lost a tackle ahead of the third goal – but he is 18. Harvey Elliott is a talent but is nowhere near the finished product.
James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all out of contract in the summer.
    ATTACK
Liverpool were always going to miss Sadio Mane. Mo Salah has been off the pace since signing a new contract.
Roberto Firmino, out of contract in the summer, has not played since November due to his fitness but he could still accept a new deal and Liverpool probably need him to stay.
Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have been injured, Darwin Nunez remains raw while Cody Gakpo is yet to impress since coming from Holland.
    VERDICT
Liverpool have won just three of their 10 competitive games since the World Cup – while they managed seven wins out of the 10 matches before Qatar.
    Read More on The Sun
So as Klopp said, you can no longer blame last year’s 63-game season as they should have had time to recover physically.
As for Klopp sorting out this shambles, it is now a case of if he can do it, rather than when.

Man Utd fans fume as Ayew ‘CHOKES’ Fred but isn’t sent off like Casemiro in Crystal Palace brawl

MANCHESTER UNITED fans were left frustrated after Jordan Ayew escaped a red card despite “choking” Fred.A brawl broke out after Crystal Palace star Jeffrey Schlupp bundled Antony into the advertising board.

Manchester United fans questioned why the striker escaped a red card
Casemiro and Antony squared up to Schlupp which led Ayew to intervene.
There was pushing and shoving from several players but the Palace striker appeared to raise his hands on Fred.
United fans have accused Ayew of “choking” the Brazilian and have questioned why he was not sent off when Casemiro received his marching orders for a similar offence on Will Hughes.
One said: “Either rescind the red card based on the full footage or ban Ayew retrospectively for a much worse offence (effectively punching Fred). Joke decisions.”
