Man Utd ratings: Marcel Sabitzer impresses in first start but Wout Weghorst anonymous as United much better without him

MANCHESTER UNITED rallied from two goals down to grab a point against Leeds. In their first game after the sacking of Jesse Marsch, Leeds needed less than a minute to hit the opening goal as Wilfried Gnonto scored.

Things would get even better for the Yorkshire club early in the second-half as an own goal by Raphael Varane doubled Leeds’ advantage.
But Man United roared back through Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, his first goal since his Old Trafford exile ended.
The draw means the Red Devils’ 13-game home winning run in all competitions has come to an end.
SunSport’s Martin Blackburn explores who turned up and who buckled under Leeds’ pressure in a topsy-turvy night in Manchester.
    READ MORE IN MAN UNITED
    David de Gea – 6
Given no chance by Gnonto’s early strike and wrong-footed by Varane for the second.
Made a decent first half save to keep out Struijk’s header but also beaten all ends up by Aaronson’s free-kick which hit the post
    Diogo Dalot – 7
Stepped in for first league start since the World Cup due to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s injury.
Saw a sweet strike blocked in first half stoppage time. Floated a super cross over for Rashford’s header which pulled United back in the game.

    Raphael Varane – 6
Diverted Crysencio Summerville’s cross beyond de Gea for the visitors second goal but came close to scoring at the right end too on a couple of occasions.
Brilliant save by Meslier kept out his header and denied him a winner late on.
    Lisandro Martinez – 6
Lucky to go unpunished for a nasty tackle on Bamford. Stood off Gnonto as Leeds took the lead in the first minute.
Found it tough going at times with little protection from the midfield but stuck at it.
    Luke Shaw – 6
Fantastic work down the left as he linked up superbly with Sancho for the equaliser.
Had some nice link ups with Garnacho before he was subbed and did his bit defensively despite some rapid counter attacks.
    Fred – 5
Injuries to Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay – and Casemiro’s suspension – mean he is back to starting. Yet it was more like the old Fred and as United fans know he is no Casemiro as a shield for the defence.
Could have grabbed a late winner but shot lacked the power to beat Meslier.
Fred had big boots to fill in midfield with both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen absentCredit: Getty
    Marcel Sabitzer – 7
Debut for the Austrian and could have marked it with a goal but fluffed an early volley and saw curling shot saved brilliantly by Meslier.
Some promising signs that the loan man from Bayern Munich can be an important addition.
    Marcus Rashford – 6
Thunderous shot into the head of Pascal Struijk ended his evening. Pulled a second-half shot wide but then stepped up when it mattered to head United back into the game – meaning he has now scored in six consecutive home games.
    Bruno Fernandes – 6
Robbed by Struijk in the first minute in the build up to the goal and almost presented Summerville with another goal later on.
Improved after the break and whistled a shot over late on which could have won it.
    Alejandro Garnacho – 6
Early shot wide and saw a first half effort cleared off the line by Wober. The young Argentine tried to make things happen but gave the ball away for the second.
Did not look impressed when he was replaced by Facundo Pellistri on the hour.
    Wout Weghorst – 4
Only had 10 touches in the first half and the second period started little better – no surprise when he was hooked on the hour for Jadon Sancho. The Dutch forward has yet to settle since making the surprise move to Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho (on for Weghorst 59′) – 7
Big moment for the England man as he put his recent problems behind him with the equaliser.
Facundo Pellistri (on for Garnacho 59′) – 6
Played his part in the goal that pulled United back into it with a lay off for Dalot.

Tyrell Malacia (on for Dalot 82′) – 5
On to give the returning Dalot a breather at the end and slotted in on the right.

Man Utd 2 Leeds 2: Jadon Sancho the hero off the bench as United fight from two down to snatch vital point in title race

JADON SANCHO bounced off the bench and back into the big time. The forgotten winger had not played a league game since October with manager Erik ten Hag citing physical and mental problems.
Jadon Sancho scored the equaliser after Man Utd fell two goals behind to LeedsCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
He has managed the £73million buy carefully over this time and eased him back into the fray with a Carabao Cup substitutes appearance against Nottingham Forest recently.
Then came last night as the 22-year-old came on and scored the 70th minute equaliser to complete a Manchester United comeback.
It may not have led to a famous late winner but after being two down but they had looked out of this game until Ten Hag made a double change which included Facundo Pellestri as well as Sancho.
Pellestri teed up Diogo Dalot to cross for Marcus Rashford’s header that got the home side back into the game on 62 minutes before Sancho struck.

Leeds would have taken a point after a week which saw Jesse Marsch get his marching orders, but in truth they let two slip from a position of dominance.
Ten Hag said ahead of the game that sacking a manager as Leeds had done with Marsch rarely had the desired effect.
Well, it took just 55 seconds for it to work here as the visitors took a shock lead.
The Red Devils boss has been hammering home the message about his players being fully alert for every second of games.

But they had not woken up to the threat of 19-year-old Italian winger Gnonto.
The goal originated from a fierce challenge by Pascal Struijk that dislodged the ball from Bruno Fernnades possession.
Gnonto picked it up and flicked a pass between Diogo Dalot and Raphael Varane to Patrick Bamford.
The Leeds front man’s cushioned return to his teammate was perfect and Gnonto, with four red shirts in close attendance, was not challenged and released a shot from just outside the area into the bottom left hand corner.
Gnonto headed shushed the Stretford End and to be fair that famous section of Old Trafford did look suitably stunned.
The goal set the tone for a fiery first-half.
But without the calming assured influence of Casemiro, serving the first of a three match suspension, Ten Hag’s men were looking ragged.
Fred looked like Fred again while new on-loan signing Marcel Sabitzer was struggling to offer the reassurance of the absent Brazilian.

Up front Wout Weghorst was offering little again and Leeds almost had a second in the 11th minute when Struijk got in at the far post and chested the ball goalwards from close range but David de Gea palmed it away.
Alejandro Garnacho was getting into the action with his usual positive forward runs and fired just wide of the near post.
Then after being put through by Fernandes he rounded goalkeeper Illan Meslier before having his shot headed away from in front of the line by Max Wober.
Sabitzer had an early volley that was wild and well over but did better when he arrowed one towards the top left hand corner only for Meslier to claw it away.
Leeds were holding their ground despite having to make an early change after eight minutes when Luis Sinisterra went off injured and then a second when a dazed Struijk left the field after being struck in the face by a thunderous shot from Rashford.
Whatever co-caretakers Michael Skubala and Chris Armas, formerly here at old Trafford with Ralf Rangnick, said before the match was certainly having more effect than Marsch’s recent pre-match chats in a run of two wins in 17 league games.
Whatever was said at half-time worked the trick as well as Leeds began on the front foot again and scored three minutes after the resumption.
Garnacho’s decent work from the first-half was undone when his fumbled attempts at playing the ball out his own half saw him dispossessed, although he will claim a handball from Robin Koch as possession was wrestled for.
Crysencio Summerville’s (left) shot deflected in off Raphael VaraneCredit: Getty
VAR would not come to his rescue as Gnonto rolled a pass to Summerville whose low cross into the six yard box was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Varane.
Ten Hag needed to change things and brought on Sancho and Pellistri in the 59th minute for Weghorst and Garnacho the latter of whom appeared to flick away his manager’s consoling gestures.
Not a great idea when you’re looking for a new contract.
The change would have effect just three minutes later with Pellistri kept the ball in for Diogo Dalot to cross and Rashford’s header was perfectly guided beyond the outstretched arm of Meslier.
Then came Sancho’s moment when after being found by Luke Shaw he curled a shot through the dive of Meslier.

It was deafening inside Old Trafford now and the home fans were almost celebrating a winner when on 77 minutes Varane rose highest to meet Fernandes cross only for Meslier’s finger tips to deny him.
Breathless stuff, and fitting of great battles between these two old foes.

But a transfer to cash-strapped Barcelona could not done despite Amrabat’s best efforts.
The 26-year-old was willing to play for nothing if it got him a dream move to the Nou Camp, according to Mundo Deportivo.
They report the star was willing to allow his wages to be funnelled to Fiorentina to help Barcelona pay for a loan.
This would have added onto the £5.3m loan offer Barcelona reportedly lodged to try and bring him to Catalonia until the end of the season.

But Fiorentina managed to successfully fend off interest in their star man.
Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked to Amrabat with Erik ten Hag’s side believed to have been pushing particularly hard for a January move.
The Dutchman managed Amrabat for two seasons at Utrecht and was likely aware of his talent before he revealed it on the world stage with Morocco.
Alongside midfield partner Azzedine Ounahi – who was also linked with a move to England – the pair helped propel Morocco to the country’s first ever World Cup semi.
