‘Doing it for motivation’ – Alejandro Garnacho likes post saying he should not start for Man Utd after Leeds draw

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO liked a social media post that said he is not ready to start games for Man Utd following his display in the 2-2 draw with Leeds. The 18-year-old lined up on the left of the Red Devils’ attack at Old Trafford on Wednesday night as Marcus Rashford switched to the right.

But the Spanish-born forward struggled during the match and was replaced by Facundo Pellistri in the 59th minute with Erik ten Hag’s men 2-0 down.
Man Utd then came back to draw the game 2-2 thanks to goals from Rashford and substitute Jadon Sancho.
Fans vented their frustration after the final whistle – with Garnacho singled out as a problem.
And the particular tweet Garnacho liked – before quickly unliking – read: “1. [Marcus] Rashford either plays upfront or LW – playing him RW cost us today.

Garnacho, who is out of contract in 2024, also liked another tweet which said: “Garnacho is not fit to start Premier League games. I’ve seen enough”.
Ten Hag has started Garnacho in three league matches so far this season, but he has failed to register a goal or assist in any of those games.
By contrast, he has contributed three goal contributions in his eight appearances off the bench.
Man Utd’s draw with Leeds ended a run of 13 straight home wins in all competitions.
It also meant they missed the opportunity to move level on points with rivals Man City.
Ten Hag’s side face Leeds for a second time in 96 hours on Sunday when they travel to Elland Road. More

Chelsea ‘agree Aubameyang loan transfer with LAFC’ allowing £160,000-a-week flop to leave this season

CHELSEA have reportedly agreed a loan deal for LAFC for £160,000-a-week flop Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But the striker is yet to green-light an exit despite being frozen out by Graham Potter.

Aubameyang, 33, was lured to Chelsea by Thomas Tuchel last summer despite enjoying a fine spell at Barcelona.
The pair knew each other well from their time together at Borussia Dortmund.
And it was hoped that ex-Arsenal captain Aubameyang could be the man to fire Tuchel’s side to silverware.
But the veteran managed just one game before his pal was axed by Todd Boehly.

And Aubameyang has fared little better since, netting just three times in 17 games with Potter at the helm.
After falling down the Stamford Bridge pecking order, the striker’s latest blow came when he was axed from Chelsea’s 25-man Champions League squad.
But there is still hope for Aubameyang’s career after American outfit LAFC made an approach.
Le10Sport claims the Americans have offered to take Aubameyang on loan.

And they are even willing to meet his £160k-a-week wages, helping Chelsea battle FFP rules after an eight-player January splurge.
However, there is no indication that Aubameyang has agreed to the move yet.
The Gabon star had been hoping to rejoin Barcelona in January.
There were no other options at the time as Aubameyang was not able to pay for a third club in the same season.
But the MLS window has just opened ahead of a new campaign, allowing the forward to make a fresh start.
Yet it’s unclear whether he wants to effectively end his European career by jetting off to the States.
However, Aubameyang would be in good company should he go to Los Angeles.

The side is captained by ex-Gooner Carlos Vela, currently the MLS’ star player.
And there’s another familiar face in Giorgio Chiellini, who won nine titles with Juventus and Euro 2020 with Italy. More

‘He’s back’ – Erik ten Hag beams as Jadon Sancho scores after hard slog back to Man Utd team and piles praise on winger

ERIK TEN HAG claims “magnificent” match-saver Jadon Sancho has already made it “all the way back” for Manchester United.Marcus Rashford and then Sancho netted to rescue a 2-2 comeback draw at home to managerless Leeds in the Premier League.

And the usually-dour Dutchman was so impressed with Sancho’s goal that he even afforded himself a smile.
The clash with Leeds was Sancho’s second game back from the bench as Ten Hag eases him in four months after injury and psychological issues took him out of the fold.
United boss Ten Hag brought on the England winger just before the hour, with the Red Devils trailing to  Wilfried Gnonto’s sharp first-minute strike and an own goal from Raphael Varane.
The Dutchman said: “I wanted a different dynamic. In that moment we weren’t in the game.

“Luckily it succeeded because we scored two goals. Very happy. He’s all the way back.
“We know he’s a magnificent player. I think consistently he can have a big impact.
“But he has to work hard. It will motivate him to get more. I really enjoyed it, especially for him. It will strengthen him.
“He is in the right direction and if he keeps going with that process he can do even more to really help us to achieve our goals.”

The draw leaves United third, two points behind neighbours City, and lifted Leeds one point above the drop zone.
The two sides now face what Ten Hag believes is a must-win reverse Prem fixture on Sunday at Elland Road.
He told BBC’s Match of the Day: “Of course it will encourage us for when we play the second game in a couple of days that if we play our game, we can beat them.
“We have to beat them. But you need composure all the time.
“In the last 20 minutes when it was 2-2 we created so many chances but the finishing was not always that good. We have to be more clinical.”

Watch ex-Liverpool star Emre Can score from halfway line with cheeky toe punt in Borussia Dortmund cup clash Inbox

EMRE CAN conjured an incredible two-touch finish from halfway. But the ex-Liverpool midfielder’s “comic masterpiece” for Borussia Dortmund was labelled as embarrassing as it was amazing.

Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann ended up making an ungainly lunge in a failed attempt to stop the ball beating him to the netCredit: Viaplay
The Can opener divided fans between those praising the former Germany star and others condemning Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann for his role.
Ultimately it helped put Dortmund in the German Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win.
Riemann initially reacted deftly to nip out of his area to snuff out danger, chesting the ball down neatly and lashing it into the Dortmund half.
But he didn’t get much height on it – meaning he had little time to backpedal before it was trapped in mid-air by by the right foot of Can.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
The ball had still not hit the ground by the time the ex-Juventus star lunged forward to stab a quick shot.
It zoomed just above the head of a string of players – and made the net before the sprinting Rieman and a defender could catch up with it.
One fan dubbed the 45th-minute breakthrough as the “worst halfway line goal ever” and another joked: “4 bounces before it trundles over the line. A screamer!”
A third observer with a similar view wrote: “People should stop pretending that goals from halfway aren’t almost always cr** and enjoy this for the comical masterpiece it is.”

But the “incredible” goal also inspired some classic footballing philosophy.
As one put it: “Can’t win the raffle if you don’t buy a ticket.”
There was also a curious debate as to whether it even counted as a volley.
That seemed to be based on controversial logic that was especially harsh on Can: “Surely not a volley if it bounces 3 times before trundling over the line?”
English striker Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, 18, then conceded the penalty, confirmed by VAR, from which Kevin Stoger fired Bochum level.
But Three Lions’ star Jude Bellingham soon unselfishly teed up Dortmund’s winner on 70 minutes.
The Liverpool and Manchester United target picked up centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck’s long pass and surged towards goal.
But rather than shoot, Bellingham rolled the ball across for Marco Reus to tap home.

If Man City are guilty of breaking Premier League financial rules they should be kicked out – but don’t hold your breath

YOU’D think that to be accused of cheating would be the worst that could happen in sport. And that you would be kicked out and treated as a pariah.
The Premier League has charged Manchester City with 115 counts of breaking the league’s financial rulesCredit: Reuters
Man City manager Pep GuardiolaCredit: PA
Well, let’s see what happens to Manchester City.
After a long and painstaking investigation, the Premier League has charged City with 115 counts of breaking the league’s financial rules.
In short, the Premier League is accusing Manchester City of false accounting.
Of overvaluing the amounts of money they got in from sponsorship deals and other legitimate sources of revenue.
    read more on man city
    And undervaluing their costs.
In other words lying, over a long period of time, about how much money they had and how much they were spending.
    This is called cheating.
All the teams in the Premier League — and in the lower divisions — must abide by Financial Fair Play rules.
    Most read in Football
This governs what percentage of their income can be spent on wages and transfers and so on.
It ensures the books are balanced.
And its purpose is to stop clubs going out of business by spending beyond their means.
In short, if you haven’t got a pot to p**s in, you can’t buy Kylian Mbappe.
    It’s pretty straightforward.
But it’s not straightforward the way Manchester City have been doing it, allegedly.
And if they’ve not been honest about their income and expenditure, it means they have been given a huge advantage over clubs that have abided by the rules.
There is a suggestion Manchester City could be kicked out of the league.
Well, that would be a start, if they’re guilty. But don’t hold your breath.
    CLEAR OFF
Because no matter how seriously the authorities say they take Financial Fair Play, the truth is that the big clubs always seem to get away with it.
Already, Manchester City’s bosses are marshalling a whole army of expensive lawyers.
They say they will fight the Premier League every step of the way.
These legal battles could go on for years and years.
They will probably still be in court when Alf-Inge Haaland is collecting his free bus pass.
In the meantime, City will carry on just the way they’ve always carried on.
This, surely, is wrong. If City disagree with the Premier League’s rules, they are perfectly at liberty to clear off out of the league.
But while in it, they must abide.
That means, at the least, a complete embargo on transfers until this business is sorted out.
That should concentrate the minds a little at the Etihad Stadium.
I don’t say any of this because I hate Manchester City.
I mean, obviously I do hate Manchester City, but no more than I hate, say, Arsenal or Leeds United.
I’m a Millwall fan. We hate everyone.
No, I say it because for too long now, under the league’s rules, teams that do the right thing are penalised, and somehow the big guns always wriggle out of accusations of rule-breaking.
Which makes a mockery of the whole thing.
The Premier League should act tough with City.
No spending at all until the charges are heard in court, which they will be.
And if the verdict is guilty as charged? Out of the league.
    Well done, Your Worship
ATTENDANCES at Church of England services continue to plummet.
More and more people who would call themselves Christian find the Church of England an utter irrelevance.
But at last the bishops are doing something about it.
Yes, they are reviewing the Bible for its gender-biased language.
    Well done, Your Worship.
    That’ll bring them flooding back.
