‘That’s criminal’ – Michael Owen SLAMS two Man Utd players for what they did in pulsating 2-2 draw against Leeds

The American had a free-kick that could have put his side 3-1 up in the clash after Rashford’s goal got Man United back in the game after Wilfried Gnonto’s strike and Varane’s own goal.
However, Aaronson had a helping hand with his effort as Rashford and Varane split and turned their back on the ball which almost had disastrous consequences.
The ball went through the wall and hit the base of the post, with David De Gea rooted to the spot.
And former United and Liverpool star Owen had criticised the pair, he told PLP: “I couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t believe this wall.

“Look a this the way they split – Varane and Rashford they just split – the ball goes low, right through the middle, it didn’t go over the wall at all.
“If that goes in, and they both turn away, that’s criminal, that’s criminal.

“I mean, if that goes in there’s serious, serious words being had after. You simply cannot do that.
“You need to be big, brave and bold in a wall and to turn your back and split – everything you cannot do they did there.

    “They’ve got away with it.

The two sides will go head to head again on Sunday. More

Natalie Burrell, the founder of Manchester United’s Women’s Supporters’ Club told The Athletic: “I don’t think he should play again for Manchester United.
“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. They need to make a statement and letting him back would be the worst thing they could do.
“It would set our club back in terms of what we’re trying to do with our women’s team and campaigns like Her Game Too which are trying to encourage women to play and watch football.”
She added that it would be a “real statement” if the club wrote off Greenwood’s contract or sold him to another team in the summer.

Natalie continued: “I just don’t want to see him training. I don’t want to see him in a [United] kit. I don’t want to see him ever coming out at Old Trafford again.
Another fan, named Gina, agreed and said that players should be held to “the highest standard”.
She and her husband are so close to the club that they even received a message from legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson on their wedding day, but say that it would be wrong to let Greenwood back into the fold.
Gina explained: “While ‘charges dropped’ is not conclusive either way, if there is any doubt from United that he is guilty of these allegations then I do not feel he should play for United, or any other club, again.”

A third fan, 33-year-old Kaydee, from Scotland, was even more definite.
She said: “It’s not difficult for me; I don’t think he should return to the club at all.
“They definitely shouldn’t have him back – not after how far the game has come to promote women. It’s just not acceptable and a club like United should know better.
“He’s a brilliant player – I was one of his biggest fans. But no, not at my club.”
It comes after a sports law expert said that the 21-year-old striker lost “millions” after being dropped by sponsors Nike over the accusations.
The young star is rumoured to be lining up a major transfer to China, which could see him take a large pay cut due to the Chinese Super League’s salary cap on foreign players.
Greenwood is currently suspended by Manchester United, pending an internal investigation.
He updated his Instagram profile to include both the club and Nike again but, as the Nike statement showed, that may not be an indication of the probe’s result.

Charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control against the star were dropped earlier this month after several key witnesses withdrew.
Despite the case against him collapsing, sources have said that his clubmates are not all in favour of having him back.

Leeds ‘fail to persuade Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola to join club’ as search for new manager continues

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan was heavily linked with the role but instead signed a new deal to remain at the Hawthorns.
Leeds have since looked elsewhere for a head coach, eyeing up Vallecano man Iraola.
The Spaniard, 40, has guided his side to fifth in LaLiga and just three points adrift of the Champions League places.
According to The Guardian, a number of Leeds chiefs flew out to meet with Iraola in a bid to convince him to return to Yorkshire.

But they were unsuccessful in doing so as they headed back to England no closer to finding Marsch’s replacement.
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou and Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen have both been linked with the vacancy.
Feyenoord’s Arne Slot is another name being thrown around, although he is expected to stay with the Eredivisie giants.

Leeds are embroiled in a relegation battle following a run of eight Premier League games without a win.
Without a manager, they did secure a 2-2 draw away at Man Utd on Wednesday evening.
But they are still just one point above the drop zone in 16th place.
On Tuesday, Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani called for patience surrounding the managerial position.
He tweeted: “We are on it. Hopefully white smoke by tonight or [tomorrow] morning”.
On Wednesday evening, he then added: “Not yet……. need more time”.

The former Leeds Under-21 coach teamed up with assistants Chris Armas as well as Paco Gallardo and led the visitors to an impressive 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
And it looks like we have an idea as to how the 40-year-old tactician led the Premier League strugglers to last night’s strong performance.
A nosy camera caught sight of Skubala’s notepad on which he wrote four instructions for his players.
Although the English manager’s handwriting was a bit rough, it’s clear that two of them say, “believe” and “be calm”.
    Read More on Football
The other two are less clear, but they appear to say, “Transitions” and “close middle”.
It seems Skubala’s coaching team focused on the players’ mentality by reminding them to believe in their ability and remain calm under pressure.

When it comes to the technical stuff, Skubala, wanted them to concentrate on midfield, keep the lines together and make all the necessary transitions they worked out during training.
The Leeds stars appeared to take the instructions on board, including January signing Weston McKennie who made his full debut.

The visitors almost got the better of United as they led 2-0 at Old Trafford.
In-form Wilfried Gnonto opened the scoring just a few seconds after kick-off.
Leeds then doubled their lead three minutes into the second half with Raphael Varane’s own goal.

Man Utd takeover race hots up with just days to go until Glazers’ deadline as Qatar, Ratcliffe and Beckham fight it out

MANCHESTER UNITED are close to entering the next phase of a sale with several interested parties jostling to purchase the club.Raine Group is overseeing the sale and has imposed a deadline of February 17 for bids to be submitted.
The Glazers are looking to sell the club for around £6billionCredit: AFP
The Glazers are looking for around £6billion but initial offers could be worth around £4bn.
The Americans may have to settle for a price lower than their valuation because of the cost of redeveloping Old Trafford – which some estimate could be £2bn with the stadium potentially needing to be demolished and rebuilt.
Some parties have already made their interest public and the Glazers reportedly have held talks with certain groups.
The Glazers even set up a pop-up shop in Davos, Switzerland, in a bid to raise the club’s profile amongst wealthy clientele.

It appears to have worked as there is no shortage of interest in the club, and here SunSport examines those looking to complete a takeover.
    Sir Jim Ratcliffe
The boyhood United fan, 70, officially became the first potential buyer to enter the race last month.
Ratcliffe, who is worth £15bn, first registered his interest last summer.
A spokesperson back then said: “If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer.

“This is not about the money that has been spent or not spent.
“Jim is looking at what can be done now and, knowing how important the club is to the city, it feels like the time is right for a reset.”
Ratcliffe has investments in several sports, including football with Ligue 1 side Nice, as well as pro cycling team Ineos Grenadiers.
He was in the running to buy Chelsea last year but lost out to Todd Boehly.

    Qatari Investors
The Glazers have reportedly held talks with a group of Qatari investors over a potential takeover.
Crucially, the money behind the group is from an individual fund rather than a sovereign wealth fund, meaning they are separate from PSG owners QSI.
But they are still believed to be enormously wealthy and would invest in Old Trafford and the playing squad.
They are allegedly seeking to buy the club for around £4.1-£4.5bn, with a further £2bn to be spent on stadium redevelopment.
A bid is expected in the coming days with the Qataris said to be confident they can blow their competition out of the water.
Key to their bid is backing Erik ten Hag in the transfer market.
But they also plan to put fan engagement at the heart of their takeover bid and they will seek the views of supporters on the future of Old Trafford.
They are prepared to knock down the stadium and build a state-of-the-art facility, with money not a problem.

    Saudi Investors
United co-owner Avram Glazer reportedly held talks with a group from Saudi Arabia in Doha during the World Cup.
He described the negotiations as a “process” and so far a group from the country is yet to publicly declare an interest.
The Saudi Public Investment Fund [PIF] bought Newcastle in 2021, and another Saudi consortium could look to follow up by buying the Red Devils following Toon’s success.
Saudi sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal revealed there is widespread interest in the Premier League in the gulf state and he believes a bid could come from the private sector.
He said: “From the private sector, I can’t speak on their behalf, but there is a lot of interest and appetite and there’s a lot of passion about football.
“It’s the most-watched league in Saudi and the region and you have a lot of fans of the Premier League.
“We will definitely support it if any [Saudi] private sector comes in, because we know that’s going to reflect positively on sports within the kingdom.
“But if there’s an investor willing to do so and the numbers add up, why not?”
    David Beckham-led consortium
The United icon could front a consortium looking to buy the club and his knowledge of the club could be handy in takeover negotiations.
He also has experience in club ownership at Inter Miami, while he is a director at Salford.
Becks, 47, is believed to be worth around £370million but likely has contacts who would be able to afford the £6bn asking price.
Former team-mate Rio Ferdiannd expects Beckham to make an approach but as yet there is no offer from the superstar on the table.

    Apple
Interest from the £2trillion company emerged in November with CEO Tim Cook said to have been lining up talks with the bosses in charge of overseeing a sale.
They were believed to be preparing a £5.8billion bid for the Red Devils with Apple primarily interested in the commercial opportunities that owning such a big club would bring.
Apple also planned to build a new stadium but there has been little progress in their supposed bid to buy the club.
As a result, it would be a surprise if an offer was made before next week’s deadline.

    Amancio Ortega
The Spanish billionaire is one of the richest men in the world thanks to his £49bn fashion empire, which includes shops like Zara and Bershka.
Ortega, 86, emerged as a potential buyer in November.
He also held discussions with United executives but talk of a takeover has since died down.
    Read More on The Sun
Ortega does have to wealth to fund a takeover and the necessary rebuild on and off the pitch.
However Pontegadea, investment and asset management company of the Ortega family, denies the existence of signs of interest in the acquisition of the club.

Hated European Super League is BACK as it sets out new plans to replace Champions League with 80-team format

THE European Super League has set out new plans to replace the Champions League with a 60 to 80-team competition. The latest idea would see each club involved play a minimum of 14 games per season, with no permanent members.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been one of the leading voices behind the idea for a European Super LeagueCredit: EPA
The announcement was made by European sports development company A22 – a Madrid-based sister company of the European Super League.
It comes amid an ongoing legal dispute between Uefa and the three remaining teams in the ESL – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – an idea which was quashed within three days by fan protests in April 2021.
A22 claim the idea for the formation of the new competition comes after discussions with clubs around Europe about their economic difficulties.
However, it is not yet known how Real, Barca or Juventus would make way for new teams within the structure, or even who would run the league.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
A22 have slammed Uefa and outlined the basis for their “10 principles for a European football league”.
They said: “A European football league should be an open, multi-divisional competition with 60 to 80 teams, allowing for sustainable distribution of revenues across the pyramid.
“Participation should be based on annual sporting merit and there should be no permanent members.
“Open qualification based on domestic performance would grant rising clubs access to the competition while maintaining competitive dynamics at domestic level.”
    Most read in Football
BETTING SPECIAL – BEST SPORTS BETTING APPS IN THE UK
It is a huge U-turn from the original principles which would have seen the “Founding Partners” sharing a £3bn windfall for being in at the start of the breakaway and guaranteed £130m minimum each season.
The original Super League members were Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Man Utd, Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

A22 went on to add: “Clubs also need greater stability and predictability in annual revenues so they can make sensible, long-term commitments to player and infrastructure expenditures.
“Substantial improvements in the format and attractiveness of the current European competitions would generate additional resources.
“Stability and predictability in revenues would be dramatically improved by offering clubs a minimum of 14 guaranteed European matches each season.”
Reichart went on to claim a new format would also support domestic leagues, women’s football, the fans, financial sustainability, and the health of the players.
And Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed previously that there would be greater solidarity payments for clubs not competing in Europe.
The publication of the “principles” brought scoffing and dismissal from Spain’s La Liga.
La Liga chief executive Javier Tebas published a cartoon picturing Super League as the Big Bad Wolf and European football as Little Red Riding Hood.
Tebas said: “Super League is the wolf, who disguises himself as a granny to try to fool European football.
“But his nose and his teeth are very big.
“Four divisions in Europe? Of course the first is just for them, as in the 2019 plan.
“Government by the clubs? Yes, of course – but only by the big ones.”
It is understood the ESL is keen to address the dominance of the Premier League given its power when it comes to television rights and activity in the transfer market.
Last year, Uefa revealed plans for a new Champions League structure which will consist of 36 teams in a single division playing ten group-stage matches – a format that will come into force at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
But the European organisation’s dispute with the Super League is continuing to rumble on.
In December, Uefa were handed a boost by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg when advocate-general Athanasios Rantos’ advice sided with the European body.
Rantos found that EU competition law was in line with the restrictions Uefa and Fifa possess over football.
    Read More on The Sun
He went on to state the governing body’s power was “proportionate” for achieving Uefa’s “legitimate objectives” in accordance with EU policy.
Rantos’ advice is not binding to ECJ judges but is often followed. More

Downie claims the four-part series will follow the club in its attempt to win a first major trophy since 1955, as well as Eddie Howe’s quest to qualify for the Champions League.
