SunSport revealed last week that the former Luton manager had lost the faith of many members of his squad.
This came shortly after he infuriated his players by saying they were part of the reason he did not change his preferred playing style.
With Southampton currently rock bottom of the Premier League, club chiefs are eager to introduce a new manager as soon as possible.
We reported yesterday how one report claimed that Jesse Marsch, who was axed by relegation rivals Leeds United last week, was on the shortlist.

However, now the Daily Mail claims Southampton have a “strong interest” in Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper.
The 43-year-old led England Under-17s to World Cup glory back in 2017.
He then took charge of Swansea in 2019 and led them to two consecutive Championship play-off finishes.
Cooper left the Welsh side after two years but returned to the dug-out to take charge of Forest, who were bottom of the Championship when he arrived, in September 2021.

But he masterminded a remarkable revival that led to them winning promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
And despite a sticky start to life in the top-flight after a remarkable summer signing spree, he has now steadied the ship with the club sitting 14th and six points above the drop zone.
The Welshman penned a new long-term deal at the City Ground earlier this season that runs until 2025.
However, according to this fresh update, that has not deterred the Saints.

The larger than life duo appeared on the Today show  – their only breakfast TV appearance in the country.
Over a thousand fans gathered outside the studio hoping to catch a glimpse of the YouTube icons.
And at one point in the broadcast, their wish was granted as the Today anchors interviewed Paul and KSI on a balcony overlooking the crowd.
KSI took a megaphone and proceeded to lead the famous X-rated Arsenal chant of, “What do we think of Tottenham?”.

The crowd followed along and answered the Brit’s question, calling Spurs “s***”.
Prime is also sold at Arsenal’s home, the Emirates, enhancing KSI and Paul’s rivalry with fellow North Londoners Spurs.
Things turned nasty, though, as Today show host Karl Stefanovic was pelted with an egg on the balcony.
And despite police and extra security being called in to help control the crowd, things got out of control.

But Webb has acted immediately after Brooks wrongly ruled out Pervis Estupinan’s first-half goal for Brighton at Selhurst Park.
Brooks drew the offside line from James Tomkins to decide the South American was offside.
But he MISSED the fact that Marc Guehi was standing BEHIND Tomkins and would have played Estupinan onside.
Webb, who has summoned all the PGMOL officials to an compulsory “emergency” meeting tomorrow, decided that Brooks had to carry the can for his errors.

It comes after he also apologised to Arsenal for VAR Lee Mason’s failure to spot TWO offsides in the lead-up to Brentford’s equaliser at the Emirates on Saturday.
Mason even FORGOT to draw the lines to check if Christian Norgaard was offside in the build-up to Ivan Toney’s equaliser.
Brooks will be replaced at Stockley Park by Andre Marriner for tonight’s Merseyside derby, with David Coote taking over on Wednesday.
Both clubs have been contacted by the Premier League, who are investigating how human error led to the incorrect calls being made.

But that will be of little help to league leaders Arsenal who can point to refereeing mistakes in every Prem game they have dropped points in.
That includes the decision to chalk off Gabriel Martinelli’s goal against Manchester United for a supposed Martin Odegaard foul on Christian Eriksen, which the Premier League now accept was the wrong call. More

He then went to ground after making contact with Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey and subsequently won a penalty, which was converted by Riyad Mahrez.
Many Aston Villa fans were left furious with the decision and accused Grealish, who spent nine years at Villa Park before joining Man City in 2021, of diving.
But Keane begrudgingly praised the City star for being smart with his movement.
He told Sky Sports: “You have to give the penalty, Jack was being very, very smart. Very naïve the defending from Ramsay but he does kind of catch him.

“Jack kicks himself more than anything else. He’s more like Tom Daley but I think it is a penalty and it’s clever from Jack.
“He gets his body across, he knows exactly what he is doing – gives the referee almost no option but to give the penalty.”
City went on to win the game 3-1 thanks to goals from Mahrez, Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan.
As a result, Pep Guardiola’s side closed the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Arsenal to just three points.

Man City are set to take on the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
If they win, they will be level on points.
But, they may be forced to play without Erling Haaland, who picked up a thigh injury during the game on Sunday.
When asked about the severity of the striker’s injury after the game, Guardiola told Sky Sports: “Erling has a kick and we will see.
“We will assess him in the next few days to see how severe it is.
“At half-time I spoke with the doctors to see and they said maybe at 3-0 we don’t need to take a risk and I agreed with the doctors.
“If the score was more tight maybe I wouldn’t do it. I think he’s not injured but tomorrow we will see.
“Hopefully he can play there on Wednesday. If he’s not ready or it’s a risk he’s not going to play.” More

Chelsea will NOT sack Graham Potter and see boss as long-term project over years despite Premier League struggles

GRAHAM POTTER will NOT be sacked as Chelsea manager despite his Premier League struggles.Pressure has been mounting on the former Brighton boss, who replaced Thomas Tuchel in September.

His side have won just two of their last 13 league matches since October and their only chance of silverware is the Champions League.
Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham leaves the Blues languishing ninth in the table, ten points adrift of the top four.
However, The Athletic report the new Chelsea board led by Todd Boehly will not axe Potter this season, even if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.
The Stamford Bridge hierarchy recognise Potter joined the team during the season and with lots of new players so it will take time for him to get the best out of the squad.

Boehly and the directors also appreciate the Potter project is a long-term vision and therefore are committed to giving him that time to craft and shape the team as he wants.
That is what he did so successfully at Brighton while Mikel Arteta has reaped the rewards of being trusted through a difficult patch at Arsenal.

Now Chelsea envisage a similar approach in West London with Potter in the dugout for years, not months.
The Blues have seven new players in the squad that arrived in January – including record-signing Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea’s leadership recognise they will not gel instantaneously but allowing Potter to work with them for a sustained period is the best approach for success down the line, even if that leaves supporters frustrated now.
Fans were particularly angry at Marc Cucurella’s performance at the London Stadium on Saturday as they booed him off the pitch.
Joe Cole even criticised Potter for not slamming the officials, who denied Chelsea a late penalty despite Tomas Soucek handling in the area. More

There are believed to be a number of interested parties though some linked to a takeover have since pulled out of the race.
While others, such as a group from Qatar, are reported to have held talks with the Glazers.

A group of Qatari investors are said to be in the running to buy United but are yet to publicly reveal their interest.
That means there is still uncertainty over whether the group is connected to Qatar Sports Investment [QSI], the state-funded group that owns Paris Saint-Germain.
It is also not clear whether the group is plotting an investment to hold a minority share or if they are targeting a full takeover.
There are said to be five serious bidders interested in United including a group from Saudi Arabia and possibly a David Beckham-led consortium.
