But Arsenal opted for a low cost signing in Chelsea’s Jorginho to help sustain their push to win the Premier League with Mikel Arteta’s men sat top.
Zubimendi was said to not be keen on a mid-season move away from Spain either.
However, according to Sport, a summer transfer cannot be ruled out, with the player betting on Arsenal if they activate his £52.9million release clause.
Barcelona have also registered an interest in the player.

Spanish journalist Eugenio Mateo Serrano told Calciomercato.it: “I do not think so. Xavi needs another player instead of Busquets.

Man Utd and Chelsea battling it out for 15-year-old wonderkid Paez who is ‘better than Real Madrid prodigy Endrick’

MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea are battling it out to sign 15-year-old sensation Kendry Paez, according to reports. The Ecuadorian wonderkid is also wanted by Bayer Leverkusen in the three-way transfer tussle.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano states the teenage talent is yet to make a decision on his future ahead of his senior professional debut.
Reports last week suggested Chelsea had made a formal approach with a £15million bid and talks underway – although that initial offer was rejected.
The Blues have spent more than £600million on transfers this season and added Southampton youngster Jimmy-Jay Morgan to their academy set-up this month.
Paez, born in 2007, is making waves in his homeland with Independiente del Valle.

The rising star has recently been promoted to the first team during pre-season for the 2023 campaign.
And he has even been dubbed “better than Endrick”, the Brazilian teenager who has signed for Real Madrid despite interest from England.
Like Endrick, Paez would need to wait until he is 18 in May 2025 before moving to Europe.
However, he could sign a contract ahead of that to tie himself down to a new club.

The central midfielder shone at the 2022 Next Generation Trophy in Austria.
That alerted Borussia Dortmund to his exciting talent, too – with the Germans and United both reportedly having bids rejected last year.
Paez has four international caps for Ecuador’s Under-17s – and two goals.
However, he was forced to miss the recent South American U20 Championships due to his involvement with Independiente del Valle’s senior squad. More

‘That was not understanding your job’ – Arteta blasts ‘unacceptable’ VAR after blunder in Arsenal draw with Brentford

MIKEL ARTETA fumed after Arsenal were issued an apology following VAR controversy against Brentford. Official Lee Mason came under fire when he failed to spot an offside in the build up to Brentford’s leveller at the Emirates on Saturday.

Mason supposedly forgot to draw the lines to determine if Christian Norgaard was offside as he was looking at another incident in the build-up to Brentford’s leveller in the 1-1 draw.
It left Ivan Toney to score what could be a killer equaliser to Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes come the end of the season.
The refereeing body, the PGMOL, wrote to Arsenal to apologise citing human error, and Howard Webb called an emergency meeting with all officials.
But a seething Arteta said: “We ended the game with a huge anger and disappointment because that wasn’t a human error, that was not understanding your job and that is not acceptable.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
“That cost Arsenal two points and that’s not going to be restored.”
Mason currently only works on VAR after retiring as an on-pitch official, but he has been stood down from his duties this weekend.
The 51-year-old was not included in the Premier League’s list of appointments for the upcoming round of fixtures.
Arsenal dropped points for the second game in a row after defeat to Everton the week before.

And despite having a game in hand over champions and second-placed Manchester City, the gap is now narrowed to only three points.
After the match, Arteta raged: “I just looked back and it is offside. Have they explained why it wasn’t allowed? No.
“It is frustrating but they will probably give an explanation later in the week. Today we haven’t got one.
“You have to apply certain principles in defending and you do that by sticking to the rules.
“Suddenly you change the rules and then you have to change your principles. So tell us before so then you don’t hold the line that high.
“Because you’re always going to have an advantage if you get blocked. You cannot block if you are offside.”

Christian Atsu’s agent gives heartbreaking update as two pairs of missing star’s shoes are found in earthquake rubble

TWO pairs of Christian Atsu’s shoes have been found in the rubble in Turkey, his agent revealed today in a heartbreaking update. The ex-Newcastle and Chelsea player was last seen at his home in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, which was destroyed in the devastating earthquake.

His agent Nana Sechere confirmed the 31-year-old has yet to be found as the search continues.
But two pairs of the Ghanian’s shoes have been discovered in the rubble of his apartment building.
The football ace has been missing since the massive 7.8 magnitude quake stuck early on Monday, February 6.
Concerns are growing over Atsu’s welfare as the death toll continues to rise in Syria and Turkey.
    READ MORE ON CHRISTIAN ATSU
There have been conflicting reports that suggested he had been pulled from the rubble, but these have since been denied by his club Hatayspor.
Sechere has now given an update on the situation via his Twitter page.
Sechere said: “We still have not located Christian.
“I am at the quake site in Hatay with Christian’s family.
    Most read in Football
“The scenes are unimaginable and our hearts are broken for all the people affected.
“During my time here, we have been able to locate Christian Atsu’s exact room location and we have found two pairs of his shoes.”
Atsu has been missing for nine days, which Sechere said was devastating.
Sechere said: “Yesterday we received confirmation that thermal imagery was showing signs of up to five lives.
“However, I am told that the only real confirmation of life is through sight, smell and sound, and unfortunately we were not able to locate Christian.
“This is a difficult situation and we are extremely grateful to all the Turkish and foreign rescue teams, local civilians and volunteers for their efforts and response in rescuing survivors.
“However, we urgently need more resources, including a translator on the ground.
“Things are moving incredibly slow and as a result of that many rescues are being delayed, and lives are being lost due to the lack of resources available to the workers.
“It is unfortunate that the club is not on the ground with us, side by side, in the search for Christian.
“Their position and influence, accompanied with their local knowledge would be extremely helpful.
“We implore the President of the club and mayor of Hatay, Lütfü Savaş to provide additional resources to speed up the rescue efforts as a priority.”
The heartbreaking pleas follow a confusing turn of events, in which some reports said Atsu had been rescued.
The night the quake struck, a video showed rescuers with search lights sifting through the wreckage of Atsu’s apartment block.
His voice was then heard in the rubble, along with that of Hatayspor’s Sporting Director Taner Savut, according to local media.
News then followed that he had been saved in a miracle rescue, which has now been disproved.
Tragically, just hours before the quake struck, Atsu scored deep into stoppage time on Saturday to secure a 1-0 win over Kasimpasa.
“Important win for the team. Happy to be on the scoresheet,” he tweeted.
Footage showed Atsu being mobbed by his teammates as ecstatic fans celebrated the win, along with messages praying for him to be found.
Big-hearted Sun readers have so far raised £1million in response to the devastation.
All money from the Sun Earthquake Appeal will be donated to the British Red Cross for a major on-the-ground mobilisation.
Atsu joined Chelsea from Porto for £3.5million in 2013 but didn’t make a single appearance for the Premier League giants.

He also took in loans at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle.
And the Magpies made his deal permanent in 2017 after Atsu played a key role in their promotion from the Championship.

He commented on the post: “Surprising to note that the Premier League has excluded me from Chelsea’s 2005/06 typical team.

He had joined the club ahead of the season but would only spend one year at Chelsea before heading back to Spain with Valencia.

He was undoubtedly one of the club’s key players during their run to the title that season.
However, this season was his last at Stamford Bridge as he moved to Arsenal as part of a deal that saw Ashley Cole join Chelsea. More
