Arsenal 1 Man City 3: Haaland, Grealish and De Bruyne fire champions top of Prem as wheels fall off Gunners’ challenge

IT has taken 18 months for Jack Grealish to produce a £100million moment but here it was. Grealish – always the best turned-out in the parade ring but desperate to prove his no mere show pony – settled the the most important game of the season to date and sent Manchester City to the Premier League summit.

The expensive lawyers will decide precisely where City’s expensive financing came from but their club-record signing proved his worth with the clinching second goal here.
Kevin De Bruyne had opened the scoring with a masterpiece finish and Erling Haaland added the coup de grace with his 32nd goal of the season.
But after Bukayo Saka equalised from the penalty spot it was Grealish, finally showing more of his old Aston Villa form in recent weeks, who netted the effective winner.
Arsenal are level on points with the champions and have a game in hand but Mikel Arteta’s men have now taken one point from the last available nine.

It does not feel like just a wobble. City have more depth, more pedigree in going the distance and they are favourites for a fifth title in six years now.
Since being hit by a myriad of Premier League charges over alleged financial misdemeanours, City’s players seem to have been galvanised.
They won a frantic, often ill-tempered heavyweight clash by gritting their teeth and rolling up their sleeves before their superior quality showed.
Although a red-letter fixture, this was also a contest between two sides in indifferent form.

Arsenal had failed to win back-to-back league games for the first time this season, getting mugged by Sean Dyche’s Everton and a dodgy VAR call in their draw against Brentford.
City, meanwhile, had lost their last three away games – and so naturally, Guardiola saw this as an opportunity to reprise the old 3-2-5 ‘W’ formation, which was big either side of the Second World War.
Was he over-thinking it? Or if you over-think your line-up in so many big games, are you actually just thinking at a regular rate, perhaps under-thinking it for some run-of-the-mill fixtures.
Either way, it seemed bold, bordering on weird.
Even weirder, when Arsenal were in possession, Bernardo Silva – no Stuart Pearce – was asked to drop in at left-back.
There, Silva repeatedly fouled Bukayo Saka while cheating a yellow card.

Arteta kept going berserk at this and the Emirates crowd unleashed the loudest shower of invective heard here since the ‘Wenger In – Wenger Out’ civil war.
The opening exchanges were anxious and scruffy.
Just before City scored, Eddie Nketiah fluffed a free header from Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross.
Then the goal – an Ederson punt headed backwards by William Saliba, under pressure from Haaland, who had made it after a weekend injury scare.
Takehiro Tomiyasu duffed his back-pass to let in De Bruyne, a genius, who thought  ‘I’ll just swing my left boot at this, caress it over Aaron Ramsdale and inside that tiny piece of goal I can see inside the near post’. Which he did.
Yes, it was a rank error from Arsenal’s Japanese full-back, preferred here to Ben White, but the vision and execution from De Bruyne were majestic.
He remains City’s best player and It is a wonder Guardiola didn’t start him at Tottenham, where City were beaten ten days earlier.
As City’s players cavorted in the corner, Arsenal’s all shook hands with one another – presumably Arteta’s latest left-field management technique.
Still, it seemed to work, and the Emirates – a venue transformed from teddy bear’s picnic to bearpit – was roaring.
Most of their ire was reserved for Ederson’s frequent time-wasting.
The Brazilian had just been booked for this offence when he conceded the penalty.
Nketiah’s angled shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Ake, but as the Dutchman slid in, Ederson followed through to collide with Arsenal’s centre-forward.
Where was the keeper supposed to go? Ref Anthony Taylor didn’t care and pointed to the spot. Saka stepped up and sent Ederson the wrong way.
Bernardo, that unlikely hatchet man, was finally booked for his fifth foul on Saka.
But just before the break, from a Mahrez free-kick, Rodri’s tumbling header cannoned off Ake’s foot and onto the bar.
It had been frenetic and tetchy, two coaching masterminds presiding over mayhem.
Early in the second half, Arteta flicked the ball away from De Bruyne in his technical area and was barged by the Belgian in a spot of high-class handbags.
Then Haaland out-muscled Gabriel and was hauled down. Taylor pointed to the spot only for VAR David Coote to rule the Norwegian offside by the width of his ponytail.
Unlike the Brentford debacle, when Ivan Toney’s equaliser was incorrectly upheld, the boys at Stockley Park had switched on the offside lines.
City were on the front foot – De Bruyne was pumped, Haaland was bristling, Grealish was booked for dissent after failing to win a corner.

Everyone was shouting all the time – including the players. This wasn’t the ‘happy flowers’ team Guardiola had complained about.
Arsenal, without the injured Thomas Partey, were losing the midfield battle – no Partey, no party.
Gabriel gave the ball away to Bernardo, who opened up Arsenal with a pass to Haaland.
It went along the line from Ilkay Gundogan to Grealish, who steered a low shot inside the far corner, via a slight deflection from Tomiyasu which fooled Ramsdale.

But then Haaland steered in the third after a Gundogan pass and a De Bruyne cut-back and City were home and hosed.  More

Man City leapfrog Arsenal to top the Premier League table following a 3-1 win in this huge title clash.
But, all is not lost for the Gunners as they are still level on points with a game in hand.
There’s a long way to go until this title race is over, and there are plenty of twists and turns still to come.
Thank you for reading, and goodnight!
    Mikel Arteta reacts
When speaking to BBC Match of the Day, the Arsenal boss said: “Huge battle – a battle that, especially until we conceded second goal, we had them – we had the feeling we could beat them but we gave them three goals and the game at the end.
“With certain errors at this level you can’t make. The team put the level very high at the same time.
“They were playing long balls and we suffered to get out of those zones and didn’t read the situation well enough, they punished us.”
On the title race, he said: “I have more belief than I had before the game, with the performance and the level the team put in against City.
“They wanted to play a different game than the one we played and with the crowd we have we can do it.
“They still have it [belief], I can sense it. They feel they can do it.
“The difference was in the boxes, they had three chances and they put them away. We had chances and we didn’t put them away.”

    Martin Odegaard reacts
When speaking to Amazon Prime, Odegaard said:
“The game is decided in the boxes and we were not sharp enough, in front of the goal and in our own as well.
“They were better. Apart from that, we played a good game, did many good things and had many good periods, but we have to be better in the boxes.
“It is football. Sometimes chances go in, sometimes not. But that is where we need to improve and be more clinical and defend our box. That is not just about one player, but the whole team.
“As we have said all season, work hard and take it game by game. It is the same now. It is one game we have lost here today and now we look to the next one. A new game on Saturday and we must come back and win.
“It was an unbelievable atmosphere and we are so grateful to everyone who came here today and made the game special. We will work hard to give them something to make them happy about.”

    Erling Haaland reacts
When speaking to Amazon Prime, Haaland said:
“City, we not me, all the boys are the champions.
“(We made) small adjustments at half-time from Pep and in the end we have good quality players and have to get it out of every player and do it today.
“I don’t remember (what Guardiola said at half-time), I am so happy, I don’t remember.
“For me we have to play more like this at times. I am so proud today of every guy here and am so happy to be here.
“Arsenal have been the best team all season and to come away against them and play is not easy but we played an amazing game and got the three really important points.
“I mean (scoring goals) is my life and already has gone 20 minutes since i last scored so am in it again and have to keep scoring.
“I’ll do my best (to beat Aguero’s goal record).
“It was so positive and happy celebrations right after now and I am so happy. I won against Arsenal and am so happy. We needed this one and now have to go on a run because that’s what Man City do.
“I’ll do my best and make sure everyone does their best.”

Chelsea could have star-studded XI of OUTCASTS that would challenge for Premier League title next season including Mount

CHELSEA owner Todd Boehly is creating a squad for the ages, at least in a financial sense. Consequently, with the the Blues’ starting XI being upgraded, the quality of those in reserve has been improved too.
Here’s how Chelsea could line up next season
SunSport have taken a look at three ways Chelsea could line up next season after Neymar was sensationally linked with a summer transfer.
A report earlier today suggested the Boehly has flown to Paris for talks to sign superstar Neymar.
It comes after the 31-year-old had an argument with PSG chief Luis Campos.
And now Chelsea have entered discussions to try and sign the superstar, DESPITE already splashing out an unprecedented £600million on transfers in the last two windows.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
In addition, RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku is already set to join the club having undergone a medical in September.
With the pair’s introduction and both liking to play behind the striker, the best way to accommodate them both could be to push Nkunku out wide in support of Joao Felix, whose loan deal at Chelsea could be made permanent in the summer.
Providing N’Golo Kante can remain fit, he will partner British transfer record signing Enzo Fernandez in midfield, while Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Ben Chilwell and Reece James sit in the defence ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Looking beyond the starting XI shows a very strong team of outcasts.

How Chelsea’s star studded reserves could line up
This side would include the likes of Champions League winner Mason Mount and serial Premier League winner Raheem Sterling.
In this hypothetical XI, the two Englishmen would be joined by January signings Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto.
Meanwhile, Champions League final goalscorer Kai Havertz would lead the line while Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibably marshal the centre of defence in front of Edouard Mendy.
Marc Cucurella, Mateo Kovacic and Conor Gallagher would come in to complete the XI ahead of a number of other stars still at the club.
The likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Armando Broja, David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos would fill out the rest of the squad alongside a number of academy players.
Among these would be Carney Chukwuemeka, Omari Hutchinson and Gabriel Slonina.
Senior stars Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech would also still be at the club, but the trio have all been linked with the exit door at Stamford Bridge in the upcoming summer. More

De Bruyne was hoping to start a quick counter-attack with scores tied at 1-1 but could not retrieve the ball as Arteta shielded it from him and it appeared he even kicked the ball away.
The Man City star tried to tackle his former assistant coach and ended up giving him a push.
On his return to the pitch De Bruyne pointed and said something angrily to the title chasing manager he looked after for three years as Pep Guardiola’s apprentice.
Arteta is no stranger to controversy due to his touchline antics this season.

He has been booked for his protesting of decisions that have gone against Arsenal and had spats with opposing managers in the technical area.
Fans could not believe what they were witnessing, one said: “Can’t lie, the Arsenal boss has had that coming to him all season.”
Another commented: “Didn’t push him hard enough in my opinion.”
Tempers flared throughout the game, the first to lose his cool was Kyle Walker.
