Mark Halsey: Why I would NOT have awarded Arsenal first-half penalty in Man City showdown.. it was harsh on Ederson

ARSENAL were awarded a first-half penalty when Ederson collided with Eddie Nketiah – but it was a harsh decision by referee Anthony Taylor. The Manchester City keeper came out and Nketiah got his shot away before the momentum of both players saw a coming together, so I wouldn’t have awarded a spot-kick.

This is the sort of incident that you often see in the Premier League where no foul is given.
Taylor made a subjective call by pointing to the spot – which is what refs’ chief Howard Webb wants – and because it was not a clear and obvious error then VAR did not get involved.
But had the penalty award not been given, VAR would not have intervened either.
Ederson was already on a caution but this was not a second yellow-card offence.

Not every foul awarded requires a card and Taylor deemed it careless rather than reckless.
It was a good spot by Taylor when he correctly waved away a penalty appeal after Leandro Trossard went down in the box as Kyle Walker challenged.

Football fans joked Arsenal were awarded a controversial penalty against Man City to make up for referees’ blunder weekend – and even Piers Morgan was mystified, writes SunSport’s Joshua Jones.
Mikel Arteta was still seething four days on from the calamitous error by bungling VAR Lee Mason that let Brentford’s offside equaliser stand when the Citizens arrived in North London.

Just before half-time, ref Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot when Eddie Nketiah was bundled into by Ederson.
Nathan Ake cleared off the line but replacement VAR David Coote – who came in for John Brooks after his own howler at Selhurst Park – saw no reason to overturn Taylor’s on-field decision.
That was despite Gary Neville declaring on Twitter: “Not a pen that!”
And Gunners-mad Morgan added: “BOOOOOOOM! 1-1. Brilliant penalty by Saka (even if I have no idea why it was given… 🤣).”
Fans also joked that the refs were trying to balance the decisions out with one writing on Twitter: “Arsenal were robbed over the weekend, so they’ve been gifted the equalizer here tonight.” More

Arsenal ‘join Man Utd and Chelsea in race for Denzel Dumfries transfer’ after Takehiro Tomiyasu blunder vs Man City

ARSENAL have reportedly joined Manchester United AND Chelsea in the race to sign Denzel Dumfries from cash-strapped Italian giants Inter Milan.United and Chelsea have previously held interest in the Dutchman, 26, who is a regular starter at the San Siro.

During his near two-year spell at Inter, Dumfries has played 71 times, helping them win the Italian Super Cup twice and the Coppa Italia.
Dumfries is also a regular in the Dutch national set-up, and is known to Red Devils boss Ten Hag, who would have managed teams against the right-back when he was playing his trade at PSV.
But according to Fichajes, Arsenal have joined Man Utd and Chelsea in registering their interest in acquiring Dumfries’ services.
Inter need to make around £53million from player sales this summer due to their dire financial situation.

And Dumfires could command a high fee, easing Inter’s financial fears.
Mikel Arteta has been deploying centre-back Ben White at right-back this season, with Gabriel and William Saliba forming a solid partnership in the heart of the defence.
Takehiro Tomiyasu is also being deployed there.
However, the Japan star’s horrendous blunder in Wednesday’s 3-1 home defeat to Manchester City has brought him into question.

Bayern Munich ‘to step up Harry Kane transfer chase after internal analysis reveals he’s perfect striker for the club’

BAYERN MUNICH remain keen on pursuing Harry Kane with internal analysis suggesting no striker would suit their club better, reports say. The England forward has long been linked with moves to the world’s biggest clubs after consistently knocking in the goals for Tottenham.

His prolific scoring saw him break Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing goal record earlier this month when he bagged his 267th in the 1-0 win over Manchester City.
With Kane’s contract expiring in the summer of 2024, speculation is once again mounting that he could be into his final years in North London.
Bayern Munich are believed to have long admired the striker and Bild report that he remains in their sights.
The German paper claims that in-club analysis has shown he would suit their team more than any other frontman in the world.

While it is not clear what analysis Bayern used, the German champions may need to only look at Kane’s goals numbers to tempt them into a move.
The 29-year-old has scored at least 17 league goals in each of the last nine seasons since making his breakthrough from Spurs’ youth team.
But his boyhood club now face a frantic fight to keep him as his contract expiration nears.

De Bruyne played a key role in dismantling Arsenal, opening the scoring in the 24th minute.
He also assisted Man City’s third, teeing up goal machine Erling Haaland to kill the game off.
De Bruyne was withdrawn from play three minutes from time and replaced with holding midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
But as he walked around a riled-up Emirates, De Bruyne had items chucked at him, including beer.

The Belgium ace, of course, played pantomime villain, dodging beer being thrown while not breaking his smug stare.
And he took to Instagram after the game, saying: “Beer anyone?”
De Bruyne and Co will be hoping that the beating they gave Arsenal in their own back yard will unsettle the Gunners for the remainder of the season.

Kevin de Bruyne opened the scoring for Man City, but the defending champions were pegged back close to half-time with Bukayo Saka converting from 12 yards.
City did, however, regain composure in the second 45, with Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland extending the scoreline.

Man City star Jack Grealish reveals playing with Aaron Ramsdale for England helped him score against Arsenal

JACK GREALISH admits playing with Aaron Ramsdale for England helped him fire Manchester City to victory over Arsenal. The champions secured a stunning 3-1 win at the Emirates on Wednesday to leapfrog Arsenal into top spot.

Kevin De Bruyne fired City ahead with a sublime chipped goal before Bukayo Saka levelled with a penalty.
But Grealish’s smart finish saw City move ahead with just 18 minutes left before Erling Haaland’s late effort wrapped up victory.
Grealish has now revealed he took advantage of Ramsdale’s decision making after becoming close pals with the goalie at England camps.
The winger says he knew Ramsdale was going to anticipate a reversal of the ball after a pass from Ilkay Gundogan.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
And that allowed Grealish to make the decision to slot the ball home before cleverly deciding NOT to whip his shirt off – or else face being sent off.
Grealish said: “I know Gundo and I knew he was going to pass it. He’s so unselfish and I knew he was going to pass it. Him and Kev, obviously Kev loves getting assists.
“As the ball was coming, obviously I’m trying to go back across the keeper. I was going to reverse it but then I know Rammers [Aaron Ramsdale] from England and we always have banter, so I thought he’s going to think I’m going to try and reverse it.
“I was due one of them, just a deflection or something. I was going to take my top off, but I realised I was already on a yellow card so it’s a good job I didn’t.”

Reflecting on the win, Grealish added: “It was massive. For me it was obviously a great night, that’s what I’ve wanted to do, especially recently, I feel like I’ve been playing well.
“I want to come and affect these big games, last month I scored at Old Trafford to make it 1-0 and I was buzzing thinking I’m going to get the winner here and then we went and conceded twice, so it didn’t really mean anything.
“But obviously to score here tonight was so important and I’m absolutely buzzing for myself and for the team.
“You get those must-win games where you speak amongst yourselves and everyone was so concentrated on the game and even myself I was so in the mood and was staying off my phone.
“We just had to win today, that’s what I was thinking and luckily we did.
“If I’m being honest, I don’t actually think we played that well, I thought Arsenal were the better team, but if you want to win titles you’ve got to come to grounds like this and win games and that’s what me and Riyad were saying on the bench.” More

Pep Guardiola slams his own ‘horrible’ tactics as he reveals second-half change which helped Man City down Arsenal

PEP GUARDIOLA had to rip up his ‘horrible’ tactics as Manchester City shoved Arsenal off the Prem summit. After a feisty first-half in which Kevin De Bruyne had a touchline bust-up with Guardiola’s old No 2 Mikel Arteta, the  Etihad chief made key tactical changes at the interval to spark the surge to a 3-1 win.

Goals from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland sent the champions to the  top of the table for the first time since November on goal difference from the Gunners.
When asked what frustrated him, Guardiola, who switched Bernardo Silva’s position at half-time, replied: “My tactics!
“Because I decided something new and it was horrible. We suffered.
“There was only one team on the pitch after we scored our first goal and that was Arsenal.
    READ MORE ON MAN CITY
“We couldn’t connect with a pass, we were just playing long balls, no-one was moving and no-one wanted the ball.
“We were soft and my plan was not good.
“We allowed them to play comfortably but in the second-half we were more aggressive and that’s when the quality of our players made the difference.
“This result is so important because we could have come here a few weeks ago eight or nine points behind them and if we lost it would be almost over.

“Because they have dropped some points it has given us the chance to get closer.
“But the reality is that I still consider Arsenal to be top of the league because they have played one game less than us.”
Disappointed Arsenal boss Arteta complained: “We are all feeling very down because we had the game in our control until we conceded that second goal.
“We had the feeling we could beat them but we gave them three goals and you just cannot make those errors at the level this match was played at.
“The difference was in the boxes. They had three chances and put them away. We had big opportunities and we didn’t take them.
“That’s the disappointment. It’s exceptionally difficult to play at the level City require you to play at.
“But if you give them three goals in the way we did, the margin for error is almost zero. It’s a shame because we really had them.”
De Bruyne, who pushed Arteta after he kicked the ball away,  fired City ahead before Bukayo’s Saka’s first-half penalty levelled it for the Gunners.
Grealish and Haaland then struck to put the Etihad club in top spot.
Haaland now has 26 league goals — equalling Sergio Aguero’s best Prem tally, from 2014-15, with 15 games still to go.
He said: “We are the champions. We made some small adjustments at half-time.
“We have to play a little bit more like this at times and that’s exactly what we did.  I am so proud of every single guy here and I’m so happy to be here.
“We needed this one but we have to go on a run because that’s what City should do.”
When asked can City now go on a winning run, Haaland added: “I’ll do my best and I’ll make sure everyone else will too.”
Fellow scorer Grealish said: “It was massive. It’s a great night and that’s what I’ve wanted to do.
“I feel like I’ve been playing well. To score here tonight was so important and I’m absolutely buzzing.
“I was going to take my top off but I realised I was already on a yellow card so good job I didn’t.
“We had to win. Everyone was so concentrated  and  was in the mood and staying off my phone.”

Arsenal are now winless in their last four games in all competitions — and have also lost their last 11 Prem games against City.
Captain Martin Odegaard said: “The game is decided in the boxes and we were not sharp enough, in front of the goal and in our own as well. They were better.” More
