Oleksandr Zinchenko’s leveller on the hour mark for the Gunners made it 2-2, before a late twist.
Leon Bailey hit the woodwork late on, but it would be an unfortunate own goal that decided matters.
New Arsenal signing Jorginho let fly from the edge of the box in the 93rd minute, cannoning his shot off the crossbar.
The ball bounced out, before inadvertently striking Emi Martinez on the back of the head and trickling in.

The ex-centre-back then cackled in delight.
Former Villa and Tottenham striker Peter Crouch showed a very different reaction, however, hanging his head in his hands.
Martinez was then caught up the pitch having galloped forwards for a corner, with Gabriel Martinelli subsequently rolling the ball into an empty net after a counter-attack to make it 4-2.
The win saw Mikel Arteta’s side climb back to the top of the table going into the 3pm kick-offs.
But Manchester City were quickly presented the opportunity to go back to the top as they travelled to Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle vs Liverpool LIVE: Reds look to build on Merseyside win against Champions League chasing Magpies – updates

LIVERPOOL and Newcastle round off today’s Premier League action with a mouth-watering contest at St. James’ Park. The Reds finally recorded their first league win of 2023 against Merseyside rivals Everton last weekend.
And Jurgen Klopp will be hoping his side can build on that win against top four dreaming Newcastle.

    Kick-off time: 5:30pm GMT
    Live stream: NOW TV
TV channel: Sky Sports Main Event and Premier League
    Newcastle XI: To follow
    Liverpool XI: To follow

Jurgen looking to see new players gel
Many people have questioned the likes of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo this season and their contribution towards the Liverpool cause.
Against Everton in the week, the front three seemed to have more of an understanding with Gakpo getting his first Liverpool goal against The Toffees.
Mohamed Salah is two goals short of equalling club legend Robbie Fowler’s record of 128 goals in the Premier League for The Reds.
    Howe to find more goals
Newcastle have recently dropped points having dominated games but failing to put their chances away.
The Magpies are the lowest scorers in the top six, although they have conceded the least amount of goals in the Premier League this season.
He will see today as a chance for his side to get their push back on track against a side they hope to replace in the Champions League qualification places.
    Chance to right some wrongs
Despite a very out of character season to date, this game can prove pivotal to The Reds’ season.
Victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side would see them close the gap on Newcastle in fourth position to only six points with a game in hand over the Geordies.
It would put serious pressure on Eddie Howe’s side in their search for a top four spot.
    Welcome to Newcastle vs Liverpool
Newcastle welcome Liverpool to St James’ Park this evening, with Jurgen Klopp’s side being the only team to have beaten The Magpies in the Premier League this season.
Eddie Howe was forced to bring three players off due to injury in their recent draw at Bournemouth, where Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock all causing the manager a concern.
Willock is likely to sit this one out due to a hamstring concern, although he could return next weekend for the EFL Cup final.
The Newcastle manger is confident that both Almiron and Saint-Maximin can recover their minor issues to start today, along with Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles.
Bruno Guimaraes will miss out due to suspension, while Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett will also sit this one out.
The lack of midfield options for the hosts will see Anthony Gordon start against the side he was once on the books of as a youngster.
Jurgen Klopp has received a big triple boost with the returns of Virgil van Dijk, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino to the squad against Everton and on-loan midfielder Arthur has returned to full training after thigh surgery.
The German manager will pleased to see the Anfield treatment room finally looking a little emptier in what has been a challenging season to date.
Despite this, Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Calvin Ramsay and Thiago all remain absent with the Spanish creative midfielder expected to miss several weeks due to a hip injury.
Liverpool are unlikely to change the winning side much after a big victory against Everton during the week but Klopp may decide to reintroduce van Dijk to his defence.

Mikel Arteta caught mocking referee Simon Hooper live on BT Sport with hilarious impression during Arsenal win at Villa

MIKELA ARTETA was lucky to get away without a booking after mocking referee Simon Hooper during Arsenal’s win over Aston Villa. With the score level at 2-2 late on, the tension rose at Villa Park.
Mikel Arteta childishly impersonated Simon Hooper
The red had motioned that the ball was still moving as a free-kick was taken
After Hooper ordered an Arsenal free-kick to be retaken, as the ball had been moving when the Gunners’ initially tried to continue the game, Arteta once again went ballistic.
As he berated the officials, he mocked Hooper with a crude impression.
Hooper, 40, had waved his hands to signal that the ball had still been in motion, as is customary.
After screaming in anger, Arteta pulled a silly face as he mimicked the hand gesture.

Many Arsenal fans online enjoyed their manager’s latest rant.

Others, however, expect Arteta to be retroactively punished, with one writing: “Another fine incoming.”
A second observed: “And that’s a two weeks suspension for you, Arteta.”
The Gunners manager’s discipline came under the microscope after he was booked against Manchester United last month.
He had already been hammered by Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer for his histrionics – but vowed not to tone it down, despite Arsenal being charged with failing to control their players on multiple occasions this term.
Arteta said: “I haven’t read the criticism of my behaviour and I am not part of that debate.
“They can all have their opinions but I will always try to do my best for this football club, to defend my players.
“And I will always have the passion that I believe the game has to be played with. But that’s me. That’s the way I am, on and off the pitch, for the good and the bad.”

Jorginho brilliantly hit the ball from outside the box, slicing it onto the crossbar but the rebound hit Martinez’s head and went in.

It caused outrage by rival fans online, who believed the league leaders got away with one.

But The Times report the billionaire hedge fund company Elliott are prepared to make their own incredible late effort.
Elliot are the former owners of AC Milan – selling the Serie A champions for £1bn last August – and worth a reported £46bn.
The investors are run by Paul Singer but have ruled out ambitions of a full takeover from the Glazers.
Instead, they are hopeful of adding funds to another bid, which could provide a boost for a wannabe new owner without the financial power to win the battle.

That could see Elliott taking a stake in United, providing debt funding or a combination of both, the report adds.
Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, chairman of Qatar’s biggest bank, confirmed his bid on Friday.
Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, born in Manchester, submitted an offer of his own – although it is said to be worth £1bn less than the Qatari’s.
His INEOS company said: “We can confirm that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have submitted a bid for majority ownership of Manchester United Football Club.

“We would see our role as long-term custodians of Manchester United on behalf of the fans and the wider community.
“We are ambitious and highly competitive and would want to invest in Manchester United to make them the number one club in the world once again.
“We also recognise that football governance in this country is at a crossroads.
“We would want to help in this next chapter, deepening the culture of English football by making the club a beacon for a modern, progressive, fan-centred approach to ownership.
“We want a Manchester United anchored in its proud history and roots in the North-West of England, putting the Manchester back into Manchester United and clearly focusing on winning the Champions League.”
Ratcliffe has emerged as a popular choice to take over among fans.
Although a SunSport poll yesterday revealed that Sheikh Jassim’s £5bn bid is not far behind in popularity.
The Raine Group, the bank overseeing the sale, will determine the next step, following last night’s soft deadline.
This will involve putting together a shortlist of bidders, much like the one that was compiled during the process that saw Todd Boehly buy Chelsea last year.

The Glazer family stand to make around 40 TIMES what they paid for United.
Having purchased the club in a leveraged buy-out, the Glazers spent only around £150million on United, while receiving dividends over many years. More

Potter said: “After a 1-0 defeat at home, any criticism you get is understandable.
“We’ve had a tough period and lots of challenges in terms of integrating young players in the Premier League.

    Christian Atsu tribute
Chelsea have paid a touching tribute to former player Christian Atsu, who has passed away aged 31 after the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.
The Blues’ tribute read: “It is with enormous sadness that Chelsea Football Club receives the news that Christian Atsu is confirmed as one of the many victims of the dreadful earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
“Atsu was a Chelsea player between 2013 and 2017 having signed from Porto. He did not make a competitive appearance for our men’s first team having spent his seasons as a Blue out on loan, although he featured in some pre-season games.
“During those years, the Ghanaian international was named the Player of the Tournament at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, also scoring the Goal of the Tournament as Ghana finished runners up.
“His loans took him to Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle before he was transferred permanently to St James’ Park. He moved to Turkey to play for Hatayspor last year.

The midfielder’s 45th-minute effort curled beautifully over the Blues wall and into the back of Kepa Arrizabalaga’s net – prompting his trademark golf-swing celebration.

    Ruben Selles on Azpilicueta
The Southampton caretaker says he hasn’t had a chance to see it back, but wishes the Chelsea captain a speedy recovery.
He has also asked Willy Caballero – the former Chelsea keeper who was on the Southampton bench today – to keep him up to speed with the latest news.
    Ruben Selles
“I didn’t have enough time to invent a different system. I identified anyway with the principles from before. If anyone wants to beat us then they’ll have to be at their best. We knew if we performed at our best level, we could win.”
    Ruben Selles
On the vacant manager’s job: “I look like a manager because I am a manager.
“It’s not for me and not for today. We had a fantastic week of work.”
    Ruben Selles is here
On the win: “This has been a very difficult year for all of us, so to have that performance, to see the reaction, I was very happy for them.”
    No sign of either manager
The press room is still packed and there is no sign of either manager just yet.
There’s still not any news on Azpilicueta.
    ‘Sack Graham Potter’
The inevitable social media backlash has already started with ‘SACK GRAHAM POTTER’ trending on Twitter in the aftermath of the defeat.
What does this mean for Potter?
As far as we know, Graham Potter still has the full backing of Todd Boehly and the Chelsea board, even in the face of his poor start at the club, which has been much publicised this week.
However, unlike with Dortumund in midweek when it was easy to argue that Chelsea were unlucky and could’ve won but for poor finishing, that certainly wasn’t the case today.
Southampton started the game better, dominated the physical battle and had the better chances in the first half.
Chelsea improved after the break, but the same issues in the final third were cropping up – where poor finishing and a lack of synergy in attack hampered their play.
    Saints marching on
Stat of the day: 33% of Southampton’s points this season have come in their two wins against Chelsea.
‘Can we play you every week?’
    No word on Azpi
We are still awaiting official word on the condition of Cesar Azpilicueta, after he was taken off on a stretcher late in the game.
Graham Potter is expected to emerge and face the press soon and is likely to bring an update.
    Chelsea fans unimpressed
Stamford Bridge was not only met with huge boos at full time but further boos when certain players went straight down the tunnel without acknowleding their support.
Surprisingly, it was Wesley Fofana who dragged several team-mates over to the Matthew Harding Stand to applaud, which was greatly appreciated by the fans there.
    FULL TIME: Chelsea 0-1 Southampton
There you have it! Bottom of the Prem Southampton beat Chelsea at home – what will that do for Graham Potter’s tenure?
Loud boos – as loud a noise as has been heard at Stamford Bridge today – ring out around the ground.
