Man Utd’s move for Chelsea star is ‘not right’ as Ten Hag is urged to back out of transfer race

MANCHESTER UNITED would not be making the “right call” if they pursue Mason Mount.Red Devils cult hero Louis Saha believes they should forget about signing the Chelsea midfielder following a dip in form.

United, Liverpool and Manchester City have been linked with the England international this summer, whose contract negotiations at Stamford Bridge have stalled.
Mount wants pay parity with Chelsea’s top stars – but has only scored three and made two goals in his 22 Premier League appearances this season.
And Saha told Lord Ping: “Mason Mount can fit in at any team, but I don’t think he’s had a great year at Chelsea and I’m not sure why he’d be linked more than he was before seeing as he was on fire last year.
“I don’t think he should move to United as he hasn’t been playing well.

“I think these rumours are coming from agents and I’m not going to blame the media, but moving for Mount is not the right call at the moment.”
Saha has also played down the need for United to try to sign another England international in Declan Rice.
The former striker believes the West Ham star is not needed at Old Trafford because the club already have Casemiro.
He added: “Declan Rice is a top player but he’s not in the same league as Casemiro.

“It’s not about the energy levels or how strong you are, it’s about how smart and experienced you are and there’s no better player than Casemiro in this category.
“It will take Rice time to adjust to this level, but he’s a good player and could become it but I don’t think United need him at the moment because we have sold this issue after such a long time.” More

Kevin De Bruyne among three Man City stars ruled OUT of crucial Champions League clash with RB Leipzig

MANCHESTER CITY have suffered a blow ahead of their Champions League clash against RB Leipzig after three key stars were RULED OUT of the game.Kevin De Bruyne, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones have all not been included ahead of the Champions League last 16 clash.

De Bruyne in particular has been crucial in helping Pep Guardiola’s outfit maintain a title push this season.
He has registered 18 assists in all competitions, while adding the opener against Arsenal during the 3-1 win at the Emirates last week.
However, he was unable to help Man City overcome Nottingham Forest at the weekend as Forest held the Champions to a 1-1 draw.
With Arsenal getting back to winning ways before that, City are now once again chasing Mikel Arteta’s challengers.

Regardless, the trophy the Cityzens are truly desperate to get their hands on is the Champions League.
But if they are to do it this year they will need to play the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie without some major stars.
None of the three aforementioned stars have been included in the 22-man travelling squad, while Kyle Walker also missed training ahead of the fixture.
Laporte remains an invaluable player when Guardiola wants to build up from the left flank, with the defenders passing range second to none from deep.

Stones is also a big part of City’s defence in both offensive and defensive phases, but remains sidelined after aggravating an injury earlier this month.
Walker has also seen his role in the team lessen this season, but he has also filled into a more auxiliary centre-back role when required.
City will be among the last sides to play in the Champions League, with Liverpool in action against Real Madrid tonight and Chelsea and Tottenham having already had their first legs.
The Reds and City will hope to fare better than their London counterparts did, with both picking up 1-0 away defeats.
Following the midweek visit to Germany, City will visit the South Coast in the hopes of getting back to winning ways in the Prem against Bournemouth. More

WILFRIED ZAHA is considering becoming the next big name to join the Saudi Pro League after rejecting multiple offers to extend his Crystal Palace contract, according to reports. The 30-year-old is out of contract with the Eagles at the end of the season and is currently on £130,000 a week.

Zaha has been at Crystal Palace since rejoining from Manchester United in 2015 and is now approaching a crossroads in his career.
The Evening Standard reported that Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr are one of three Saudi clubs to have sounded the Ivorian out over a free transfer in the summer.
The report adds that Zaha is understood to be interested in the Saudi switch despite AC Milan also wanting the forward.
Following Ronaldo’s arrival in December the Saudis are keen to add more high profile names to the league having seen the impact the former Manchester United man has had on attendances and overseas viewing figures.

The report adds that the other two interested clubs are Al-Hillal and Al-Ittihad.
The forward has six goals and two assists in 19 Premier League appearances this season.
Zaha has made 450 appearances for Palace but appears set to leave this summer.
The Ivorian has missed the last three matches with a hamstring injury, but returned to training last week in a big boost to Palace who are yet to win in 2023.

Zaha moved from Palace to Man Utd in 2013 but was mysteriously sidelined following an impressive pre-season as he struggled to break into the first team.
But after impressing over the summer, he played just 28 minutes in the Premier League for United and was sent out on loan to Cardiff that January.
He returned to Selhurst Park just one year after leaving, and has remained at the club ever since. More

Red cards, goals conceded – are Newcastle’s popular Dream Team assets running out of steam?

HORDES of excitable Geordies will descend upon London this coming Sunday as Newcastle hope to end their trophy drought by defeating Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final. The big talking point in the build-up to the clash at Wembley has been Nick Pope’s (£4.9m) absence.
Suffering a momentary brain fade against Liverpool, the England international was sent off for handling the ball outside the box to deny Mohamed Salah (£8m) a scoring opportunity.
Loris Karius will therefore be the unlikely starting goalkeeper for the Magpies in what is one of their biggest games in modern times, with Pope resigned to a seat in the stands.
    A costly moment
The England international’s sending off sent tremors through the world of Dream Team too.
Even accounting for the minus four points he incurred at the weekend, Pope remains comfortably the best asset in his position with 122 points to his name, 20 more than his closest rival, David de Gea (£3.8m).
However, some gaffers may be concerned that he is running out of steam, and he may not be alone among St James’ Park residents.
Newcastle’s seven most popular assets – Pope, Kieran Trippier (£6.6m), Fabian Schar (£4.5m), Miguel Almiron (£3.7m), Sven Botman (£4.4m), Dan Burn (£4.9m) and Bruno Guimaraes (£3m) – have combined for just 30 points across the last four fixtures.
That underwhelming collective tally contains two red cards, Pope and Guimaraes, but the primary reason for the drop-off in returns is a lack of clean sheets.
A minor blip or something more serious?Credit: GETTY
Trippier and his fellow first-choice defenders reached the top of the rankings in their position as a quartet through a steady stream of clean sheets but having now conceded in four consecutive games, some Dream Team managers may be wondering if the gravy train has been derailed.
    Most read in Football
Their chances of repelling the Red Devils this weekend are slim given Pope’s absence and the form of Marcus Rashford (£6.4m) but there’s always a chance the contest might be a cagey one, as can happen when there’s a trophy on the line.
Whatever the outcome at Wembley, Eddie Howe’s side will then have to prepare for a visit to the Etihad the following weekend, another unenviable match-up.
Newcastle assets have performed well above expectations this season but gaffers can’t afford to be sentimental – if their points are drying up then action must be taken.
    Stick or twist?
Of course, this current lean patch may only prove to be a temporary blip rather than the start of a significant regression.
Certainly the likes of Trippier and Pope have enough credit in the bank as the outright best performers in their respective positions but it may be wise to start earmarking replacements for the likes of Schar, Burn and Botman.
The Toon have conceded just 15 goals in 23 league games and boast by far and away the best defensive record but if the tide is indeed on the turn then there is nothing to gain from pig-headed stubbornness.
If Newcastle’s defensive assets rekindle their supreme form later in the season then Dream Team bosses can always use transfers to get the band back together. More

De Zerbi has consolidated the building blocks Potter put in place at Brighton.
The Seagulls are currently competing for a spot in Europe, sitting in seventh in the league and level on points with Liverpool.
The Telegraph have reported a number of top teams in Italy are interested in signing De Zerbi as they contemplate their own managerial changes.
Roma, Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan are the teams said to be interested in bringing De Zerbi back to Italy, with the 43-year-old previously impressing in Serie A with Sassuolo and Benevento.

Furthermore, the uncertain future of Antonio Conte could see Tottenham make a swoop for him.
Reports in Italy suggest De Zerbi has an £11.5million buyout clause in his deal at the Amex Stadium.
The reports also claim he was left unhappy at being able to sign any new players in January in order to boost Brighton’s European hopes.
Instead, the window was spent trying to retain some big talents.

Brighton repeatedly rejected Arsenal approaches for Moises Caicedo, while World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister also courted interest from some big hitters, including Tottenham and Chelsea.
De Zerbi is desperate to give Brighton a first-ever taste of European football.
As those hopes took a dent following a 1-0 defeat against Fulham last weekend, De Zerbi lost his temper and was sent off in the tunnel following the game. More

The Premier League continues to battle with fixture chaos with matches needing to be fit in a hectic schedule after many games were postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
When Brighton and Crystal Palace met earlier this season, the match finished 1-1 following much controversy.

Leroy Lita last appeared in the top-light over a decade ago for Swansea City.
Lita, who scored six goals in nine caps for England Under-21s, grabbed a hat-trick to help his latest club to a 3-1 win at Needham Market on Saturday.
Those were the veteran’s first in five outings for the seventh tier outfit from Derbyshire.
Lita was part of Chelsea’s academy as a teenager but made his name after switching to Bristol City.

His 31 goals in 85 league games earned him a move to Reading, where after loan stints at Charlton and Norwich, he enjoyed further success as the Royals won promotion to the Premier League.
He ended up joining Middlesbrough in 2009 but left after two seasons to sign for Swansea, where he spent three years.
Lita’s career then took him to Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Barnsley with a loan spell at Notts County as well prior to him making the move to Greek minnows AO Chania.
He returned to England in League Two with Yeovil Town for a short-term stint in 2016 before his now nomadic journey ventured to Thailand with Sisaket.

But the following year he was back in the UK to start his non-league adventure, playing for the likes of Margate, Salisbury, Chelmsford City, Nuneaton Borough, Stratford Town and Hednesford Town.
Lita joined Ilkeston last month, and chairman David Hilton said: “Leroy is well experienced and we feel he offers another great option for us.
“Considering he’s played in a side struggling all season with goalscoring opportunities limited, he is still high in the scoring charts.
“I’m excited to see his return for us knowing we have such great creativity.”
Lita was also once named in Uefa’s Dream Team for the U21 Euros back in 2007 alongside future greats such as Juventus and Italy legend Giorgio Chiellini and Manchester City’s Premier League winner Aleksandar Kolarov.
He scored a total of 10 goals in 65 top-flight matches.
Following the news of his hat-trick, one fan commented: “Leroy Lita there’s a blast from the past.”
