‘No shame’ – Fans fume as Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is given £500k pay rise… by himself

TOTTENHAM chairman Daniel Levy has enraged fans by reportedly handing himself a £500,000 pay rise. The Spurs boss, 61, has faced criticism from the Lilywhites faithful in recent months as chants of “get out of our club” have been heard inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The club’s wait for a trophy has now reached 15 years and an indifferent 2022/23 season has done little to please fans.
They sit fourth in the Premier League table and are still in the last-16 of the Champions League and fifth round of the FA Cup.
Yet despite Levy coming under fire, The Telegraph have revealed accounts for the year ending June 2022 show that the chairman earned £3.265million, compared with £2.698m for the previous 12 months.
What’s more, the total earned by Tottenham’s seven directors has risen to £6.773m, a huge increase from £4m.

Tottenham declined to comment when approached by SunSport.
Levy did earn £7m in £2019 – including a £3m bonus for the completion of their new stadium.
However, his most recent bonus has still raised eyebrows among Spurs supporters.
Reacting on social media, one person said: “Bro has no shame and you have to respect it”.

Another added: “Failed to deliver success on the pitch but still awards himself a pay rise? We all know what the priority is”.
And a third replied: “What on earth has he done to warrant that? Highest paid exec in the league running a club whose ambition is top four only. Give me a break!”
Tottenham’s other six directors are director of football Fabio Paratici, chief commercial officer Todd Kline, executive director Donna-Maria Cullen, operations and finance director Matthew Collecott, director of football administration and governance Rebecca Caplehorn and non-executive director Jonathan Turner.
Spurs are yet to secure a stadium naming rights deal since moving into their new ground in 2019.
And earlier this month they missed out on a £42.5m sponsorship from South Africa. More

I bought a hat donated by Man Utd icon in charity shop.. it’s brilliant of him, especially during cost of living crisis

A MANCHESTER UNITED icon has donated a load of items to a charity shop – which are now available on the cheap. Shelter’s Crystal Palace shop received an influx of clothes from the football legend and a lot of it has already been picked up off the shelf.

It was a friend of Rio Ferdinand’s who made the trip to the shop to make the generous donation on behalf the star.
The former England and Man United captain was born in South London and has always been charitable, setting up his own foundation to address social inequality in 2012.
Sun journalist Anna Roberts, 38, from Penge in South-East London was lucky enough to stumble upon Ferdinand’s latest contribution.
She said: “I’m a real charity shop hound and had today off work.

“I was chatting to the shop’s manager and she told me a load of stuff had been donated days earlier by Rio Ferdinand.
“She explained he hadn’t come in personally but his friend had dropped off loads of stuff for them to sell.
“She said a lot of it had gone.
“Rio had signed a lot of the items and even worn some of them, which I thought was really cool. That was the stuff which went first.

“However,  there was a pretty worn looking Nike hoodie which I reckon he might have worn.”
Ferdinand, 44, donated so many items that Shelter even set up a temporary ‘Rio Rail’.
Palace fans will have the chance to drop by the shop and see if any of Ferdinand’s clothes tickle their interest tomorrow before their late game at home against Liverpool.
Roberts adds that despite the cheap prices, the selection of clothes left by Ferdinand gave her with a dilemma.
She said: “I spent ages looking for something for my boyfriend but there was a big problem – he’s a Chelsea fan and it was largely Man U memorabilia.
“In the end I settled on a Lakers baseball hat which looks pretty new. Maybe Rio was gifted it? It was only £9.99 – I think it genuinely would’ve cost more new.
“There was quite a lot left when I left. The hoodies were around £25 but nothing had been sold for more than £100.
“With so many people struggling with the cost of living and housing conditions being appalling for so many, plus soaring fuel prices, I think its brilliant Rio has quietly done this. Good for him.”

Ferdinand spends much of his time these days as a pundit and analyst for BT Sport.
Before retiring in 2015, he won six Premier League titles, the Champions League and the League Cup twice. More

How Arsenal lined up the last time they faced Sporting Lisbon with just two of Arteta’s squad

ARSENAL have learned that Sporting Lisbon will be their opponent in the next round of the Europa League. The Gunners topped their group so did not need to follow Manchester United into a play-off, instead getting a pass straight into the Last 16.

And following the draw, Arsenal will be up against Sporting Lisbon, who were knocked down from Tottenham’s group in the Champions League.
Arsenal’s last game against the Portuguese giants came as recently as 2018, ending in a 0-0 draw, but they have undergone a major makeover since then.
In fact, only two members of the squad have survived since Mikel Arteta began his rebuild at the Emirates.
And now, those two stars will have the chance to face Sporting once again.

The first of the retained stars is Emile Smith Rowe, who started the game at the tender age of 18.
The other star in question is defender Rob Holding, who sat in the heart of the defence.
He partnered Sokratis at centre-back in front of then goalkeeper and captain Petr Cech.
Swiss defender Stephan Lichtsteiner took up the role as right-back, while Carl Jenkinson filled in as an auxiliary left-back.

Here’s how Arsenal lined up against Sporting in 2018
In midfield, Aaron Ramsey was paired with Matteo Guendouzi, with the pair now both playing their football in Ligue 1.
Two of the front three have retained spots in the Premier League, albeit with differing success for those teams at present.
Now Brighton ace Danny Welbeck spearheaded the Gunners attack in the match, while Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi was deployed at left-wing.
The attack was completed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who flattered to deceive at Arsenal following a transfer from Man Utd.
While only two stars from the starting XI have been retained, the bench features two players who are still at the club, though one is out on loan.
The first is Southampton loanee Ainsely Maitland-Niles, who replaced Lichtsteiner in the 73rd minute.
The other is Eddie Nketiah, who is the only starter in Arsenal’s current squad from the 2018 fixture.
But the Hale End graduate was not given any minutes in the game by then coach Unai Emery.

Instead, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang replaced Welbeck when he went off injured in the 30th minute, while Sead Kolasinac was subbed on for Jenkinson at the 60 minute mark.
Others stars on the bench included World Cup winners Emiliano Martinez and Shkodran Mustafi, as Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torrerira completed the squad. More

Arsenal cannot use Jorginho in the same way as Partey and even Ramsdale’s tactics are affected by the change

Great contribution from our 2023 version of Edu, but still no party without Thomas Partey. It’s not easy to be objective and analytical whilst recovering from last week’s Arsenal rollercoaster of emotions and fortunes, but I am going to get it a go.
Jorginho played the whole game as Arsenal came from behind to win 4-2 at Aston Villa last Saturday, with Bukayo Saka scoring the openerCredit: PA
Thomas Partey returning at Leicester this weekend would be a major boost, despite Jorginho’s promising start to his Gunners’ careerCredit: Getty
Saturday lunchtime’s goal fest at Villa Park, might offer an insight into what life without Thomas Partey could look like in the short-term at least.
As someone whose views I respect suggested to me, with Jorginho playing at six, the table-topping Gunners will have to outscore opponents, because we will concede goals.
The adopted Brazilian effectively won us the match against Villa, with the help of a certain ex-Arsenal keeper, but he also was part of our shortcomings that allowed us to leak goals and opportunities.
Operating a system utilising a sole six with Partey is not only Mikel Arteta’s preferred system, but also the one on which this season’s success has been built, But you need a player of the same style.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
Manchester City have done it with Fernandinho and now Rodri, and Liverpool have done so with Fabinho, but these powerful, athletic, mobile midfielders, who can, not only break up play but also create, are in very short supply.
You only have to have watched Liverpool this season without the experienced Brazilian to see the difficulty Arsenal could have without Partey for a sustained period.
Jorginho has so many attributes to be admired, in his tenacity, passing, vocal presence and of course his invaluable winning mentality and experience.
On the flip-side, though, he simply does not have the mobility in the defensive aspects, or the speed in transition of the elite Ghanaian.

This being the case, Arteta could tweak the system in Partey’s absence and ask Granit Xhaka to play with the Italian in a more conventional 4-2-3-1, leaving Martin Odegaard as a more central 10.
But you sense the Spaniard would sooner persevere with the system that has give his team the success this campaign.
Jorginho played his best football as the deepest midfielder, more as a playmaker operating in front of a back 3 for his country, most notably in Euro 2020, and for Chelsea.
He will not have that luxury playing for the Gunners, so you sense that more may be asked of the full-backs. And at times both Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ben White provided admirable support at Villa Park.
It might also be worth asking Aaron Ramsdale to use his long-ball accuracy more often, to mix it up and on occasion enable us to launch attacks from an alternative angle.
We saw this notable asset used by the England keeper far more in his first campaign, before his manager began using Partey in a deeper role.
Is this something we could see again while Jorginho deputises?
In short, Arsenal can thrive with Jorginho at six but he will need awareness and support from his central defenders and full-backs.
Ideally we want Jorginho as a 2023 version, 20 years on, of the man who signed him, Edu.
Certainly he create opportunities for his new team if he has the platform offensively. You can see already that his new team-mates value him and the new strengths he brings, but they will also need to be aware of his frailties.
We must also be mindful that the Brazilian-born Italian was purchased as an experienced cover player, after the long-term injury sustained by Mo Elneny.
Jorginho was brought in, at a bargain price to offer rotation and respite for Partey and certainly not to replace him.
Arteta would have hoped he could play on Thursdays, perhaps in Europe and come on late in the Premier League with his wise and cool head to close out matches.
This was after all, how the manager used the Egyptian he is replacing.
I hope that Partey is back this weekend, and we can resume business as usual, but if not Jorginho will not let anyone down if the team assist in managing his defensive load.
In an ideal world, at 31, we would all want Jorginho to be the 2023 version, 20 years on, of the man who signed him, Edu.
Our current Technical Director was a delightful footballer, who we all loved dearly.
    Read More on The Sun
When Gilberto Silva or Patrick Vieira were injured, we were never unhappy to see his name on the team sheet, confident he would do his job. Equally though, if both were fit, Edu would seldom start a really big match.
I am delighted to have Jorginho as our 2023 Edu, but I still want Partey fit to face Leicester!
