Man Utd star Marcus Rashford opens up on mental health struggles and reveals key advice that rejuvenated England hitman

MARCUS RASHFORD says forget ability, it is all about mentality. That explains why after the Manchester United ace scores he runs to the sidelines and points to his temple.

Benni McCarthy has provided Rashford with some inspirational guidanceCredit: Getty
It is a celebration which has been copied by major sports stars around the globe, including world tennis No 1 Novak Djokovic.
Rashford, 25, said: “Football’s probably 95 per cent to do with your mentality.
“For me that’s everything that gives you the base line to go and perform.
“Without that side, you are just playing off ability.

“There are many players with ability, it’s why they play at the top level.
“But what sets them apart is the mentality and I’ve been on both sides of it. I understand the strength of it and the value of it.
“I’m just concentrating a lot more on keeping myself in that headspace and I think it’s needed in order to go and win games and trophies.”
And what a headspace the England striker is in right now.

He heads into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final with Newcastle after hitting 24 goals this season and after a special night at Old Trafford on Thursday when the Red Devils beat Barcelona to reach the Europa League’s last 16.
Rashford is a player transformed under boss Erik ten Hag and admitted earlier this season he simply had not been mentally there in the previous campaign — the worst of his career as he scored just five goals.
He said: “I struggled at times last season — more mental things, not my own performance.
“It was other things off the pitch. Too often I wasn’t in the right headspace.”
Rashford suffered back and shoulder injuries between January 2020 and October 2021.
There was clearly a knock-on effect from both as he delayed an operation on his shoulder just to be fit for England and the Euros and it was a very tough time.
He said: “I don’t think anyone — apart from the people at the club — knows how long I was dealing with those issues and they probably won’t know until I say.
“But it wasn’t just one season, it was a period where every day was tough and you have to just sacrifice.
“I’ve always been one to try to be out on the pitch as much as I possibly can and, for me, that’s where I get the happiness.
“If I’m out injured then I’m not happy, I’m dealing with the pain and I’m not happy.
“So I would rather try to deal with the pain as long as I can perform and still help the team, I’d always choose to do that.”
Right now, Rashford is enjoying the season of his life.
Saturday marks seven years since his Red Devils first-team debut when he scored twice in a 5-1 win over Midtjylland in the Europa League.
It has been a rollercoaster since but now he is flying, having already smashed his previous season’s best total of 22 goals in a campaign.
The former United youth-team star has scored 17 times since returning from the World Cup in December to go with the three he notched in Qatar.
    So what has clicked?
He said: “I’m just in the areas to score goals more consistently. It’s something I’ve been working on.
“In recent years I feel like even seasons where I’ve done alright I could’ve added another ten or 15 goals if I was more consistent in the areas.”
Ten Hag has emphasised how Rashford needed to be alert for every second of every game for that chance that could decide the match.
The England man clearly listened to the Dutchman and the wisdom of first-team coach and former striker Benni McCarthy.
He said: “Benni does a lot of work with the forwards but the staff as a whole talk to you about that one chance. As a forward, it’s the one that sometimes decides the game.
“You could have a quiet game and conditions might not be so good.
“It may be difficult to keep the ball on the floor, or you could be playing against opponents who don’t keep the ball on the floor — it’s very different to how we play football.
“So the type of chances you get might vary against different teams.
“But the only thing I can focus on is me consistently being in the areas to score goals.
“That is what is within my capabilities and it’s what I’ve just been doing.
“The staff have been always giving me constant reminders to keep going.
“If the ball doesn’t come, don’t worry as it’s going to come — but it may only come one time.”
While Rashford is understandably in Ten Hag’s good books now, that has not always been the case — not least when he dropped him for the trip to Wolves on New Year’s Eve.
The star had arrived late for a team meeting and was dropped — but he then came off the bench in the second half and bagged the winner.
Rashford completely supports the manager’s actions, believing a hardline on discipline is needed.
He said: “I never made a thing out of it because — if I was a coach — I’d have done the same.
“If you don’t have standards in the training ground how do you expect to go out on the pitch and win consistently? It’s impossible.
“If you’re going to allow each other to slip or have an off-day and no one says anything — which is at times a position that we’ve been in — it’s difficult to get out of it as it becomes normal.
“I’ve not seen it at this club before and as I mentioned before about constant reminders of being in the areas, it is the same thing with constant reminders about discipline.
“And however harsh that reminder is, it’s a reminder.
“For me, it was not starting a game but you have to accept it and you have to move forward.”
The next step forward is to put that first trophy of the Ten Hag era on the table by beating the Magpies.
And there is no doubt there is that winning feeling in the Red Devils’ in-form squad as they head to Wembley.

Rashford added: “I think now, at the minute, we have it.
“It is a good position to be in as a player because you feel like your aims and objectives are reachable.” More

Real Madrid ‘want to replace Eden Hazard with another injured Chelsea star’ in summer transfer

REAL MADRID are reportedly eyeing up a move for Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic this summer. The Spanish champions are preparing to offload former Blues star Eden Hazard as he prepares to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the Bernabeu.

And they could be set to return to Stamford Bridge for a replacement in the form of American Pulisic.
According to Defensa Central, Chelsea need to sell players at the end of the season to recoup some of the £600million spent over the past two windows.
Much is being made of how Todd Boehly’s bullish transfer strategy could raise issues around Uefa’s financial fair play regulations.
And Pulisic is being looked at as someone they could offload to try and remain within the rules.

The USA international, 24, has been sidelined with a knee problem since January.
He has started just six Premier League games for Chelsea this season.
And inconsistency has left him frustrated ever since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2019.
Over 136 appearances for the Blues, he has bagged 26 goals and 21 assists.

But Real remain interested and could capitalise on Pulisic saying in the past that he would like to play for Los Blancos one day.
If he did arrive at the Bernabeu, the former Dortmund man would hope to avoid the injury issues Hazard has suffered.
The Belgian, 32, has scored just seven goals since joining Real in the summer of 2019.
And last month his latest injury was confirmed as he suffered an 18TH SETBACK in the Spanish capital.
Hazard has been linked with a move back to the Premier League with Chelsea and Newcastle reportedly interested. More

Man Utd and Chelsea set for pre-season tour of US with shock friendlies lined up against non-league minnows

Ryan Reynolds is lining up a match with two of the Prem’s A-listers
And their side are flying high in the National League, sitting in second place with 14 games remaining.
So Wrexham could be back in the Football League come the end of the season when they plan to face Premier League giants Man Utd and Chelsea.
According to The Telegraph, both English giants have been offered games against the Hollywood-infiltrated club.
They have provisionally agreed to play Chelsea at the Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on July 19.

Then the following week they are seeking a clash with Man Utd at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
The Red Devils have not been in America since Jose Mourinho was in charge in 2018.
Matches against the Premier League titans would further increase the profile of Reynolds and McElhenney’s new venture – which was recently the focus of the “Welcome to Wrexham” programme.
And they enjoyed a superb run to the fourth round of the FA Cup where they were eventually eliminated by Sheffield United following a replay.

But it could still be a successful season for Wrexham as they eye promotion back to the fourth tier for the first time in 15 years.

I’ve loved Toon since Shearer had hair and was at horror 99 final but it could be different v Man Utd now, TV star says

LEE RIDLEY is a Newcastle United fanatic — but you will probably know him as Lost Voice Guy.The stand-up comic became a huge hit and won Britain’s Got Talent in 2018.

Newcastle are returning to Wembley for the first time since 1999Credit: Getty
Unable to speak since being diagnosed with cerebral palsy in early childhood, Ridley uses a communication device to bring his brilliant humour to audiences.
Here, in his unique style, Ridley, 42, tells SunSport his footballing experiences, hopes and dreams as a member of the Toon Army.
NEWCASTLE UNITED has always been special to me since I saw my first match at St James’ Park in 1991.
Ossie Ardiles was the manager back then and, admittedly, we were rubbish!
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
But the atmosphere was like nothing else I’ve experienced. From that day, I loved it.
When I was younger, I really wanted to play for them. Let’s be honest, I can hardly walk never mind run, so that was never going to happen.
But I was also very stubborn. If someone told me I couldn’t do something, I made it my mission to prove them wrong. To be fair, it’s that sort of attitude that got me a career in stand-up comedy.
Anyway, in my attempt to become Newcastle’s next No 9, I joined Junior Magpies. After all, I was as good at dribbling as Chris Waddle. Surely the rest of it was as easy!?

But, it turned out it wasn’t to be. Mainly because I fell down and got injured more than Michael Owen.
Instead, I watched from the Leazes End, though I was never very good at the chants.
You try singing the Blaydon Races when you sound like a pound-shop Stephen Hawking.
I stood in awe as Philippe Albert scored that chip against Manchester United.
I jumped for joy as Tino Asprilla destroyed Barcelona.
And who can forget the time we scored five against the Mackems?
Of course, one thing has always been missing, though — some silverware!
So when we reached our last final, in the FA Cup against Manchester United in 1999 — so long ago that it was at the old Wembley, dial-up internet was all the rage, and Alan Shearer still had hair — I made my way to London with hope in my heart.
Looking back now, I was fooling myself. Ruud Gullit was in charge, for a start.
The man who changed his starting 11 more than I changed my underpants.
The closest we got to “sexy football” on Tyneside was when Nobby Solano took his shirt off.
The fact was we just weren’t good enough on the day.
We never really recovered from an early Teddy Sheringham goal. That was a long journey home.
But 24 years later, we’re back at Wembley again. But this time it really does feel different. I promise!
The progress the lads have made this season has left me speechless. The city is buzzing again, and it’s a delight to see.
But this is just the beginning.
Coming from a comedian who can’t even speak, trust me when I say ‘If you believe it, you can achieve it’.
Come on Newcastle, let’s give the fans what they’ve deserved for so long.

Just don’t expect me to give a team talk as good as Eddie Howe… I’m available if you are desperate for a keeper though.

Under-fire Chelsea boss Graham Potter reveals sick trolls ‘want him and his KIDS dead’ after horror run of results

GRAHAM POTTER received vicious abuse wishing him and his family dead because of Chelsea’s poor results. On Friday, the struggling Blues boss revealed he was the victim of sickening emails from trolls.

Tenth-placed Chelsea head to Spurs on Sunday on a run of just two wins in 14 Premier League games.
And Potter said: “I’ve had some not particularly nice emails come through that want me to die and want my kids to die. That’s obviously not pleasant to receive. If you go to work and somebody is swearing abuse at you it’s not going to be pleasant, if you’re referred to as the worst person in the history of the club.
“You can say, ‘Oh, I don’t care’ but you know I’m lying because everyone does care what people think because we are hardwired to be socially connected.
“And I want to succeed here so it’s nonsense this notion that I don’t care.

“And I would ask you to ask my family how life has been for me and for them. It has not been pleasant at all.
“I understand that supporters go home and they are really annoyed because their team is not winning.
“But I assure you my life for the past three or four months has been fairly average apart from the fact that I am really grateful for this experience and can say what a great challenge this is.”
Potter joked: “You know there’s a problem when the email is sent from Potterbastard@gmail.com”

Chelsea are offering Potter full support over the vile abuse and security around the boss may also be stepped up.
The ex-Brighton chief confided in West Ham manager David Moyes after the recent 1-1 draw between their two clubs.
But Potter admitted: “Life is tough for lots of people — and nobody cares about a Premier League manager. Sometimes life isn’t fair and I understand it. I spoke with David Moyes about it.”
Potter was given funds to sign eight new players at a total cost of £286.8million in January but Chelsea have scored only one goal in the last four matches.
Potter added: “We had a sub-optimal pre-season and our experienced guys thought it was the worst they’d ever had.
“Then there was a manager change, old players left, new players came in.
“We had an unprecedented injury situation in that period. This is the toughest job in football.”

‘I want to kill’ – Man Utd hero Lisandro Martinez reveals what he’ll do to win ahead of Carabao Cup final vs Newcastle

LISANDRO MARTINEZ is going in for the kill at Wembley on Sunday. The Manchester United centre-back’s passion and commitment has made him a crowd favourite.

And ahead of facing Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, the Argentine — nicknamed ‘The Butcher’ — admits it is difficult to control himself sometimes.
Martinez, 25, said: “Yeah. It is hard. It is really hard. Sometimes I want to kill but you have to control as well.”
The 25-year-old Argentinian World Cup winner produced a typically full-on display in the 2-1 win over Barcelona on Thursday night.
Now he wants to put on that same show of typical Argentinian spirit beneath the arch against the Toon.

Martinez said: “Argentinian players are always like this, we are passionate.
“Football for us is everything so that is why we always give everything of us.
“As a kid, I remember when I was really young, like four or five years old, I would start to fight and start to cry when I lose, so it is something we have in the blood, we have in the heart. It’s our culture.”
While he has only ever been sent off once, for two bookable offences while playing in Argentina, his nickname is not something he has ever shied away from.

He said: “Yes, I am called the Carnicero — The Butcher — of Amsterdam.
“We Argentines do everything with passion and when I go out on the pitch, I fight for every ball. If I have to step over dead bodies, I do it.”

If Martinez needed any further inspiration following his £56.7million move from Ajax last summer, it came with doubters.
At 5ft 9in he is the shortest centre-back in the Premier League and pundits were queuing up to say he would not make it in this country.
Those voices grew louder after a disastrous 4-0 defeat at Brentford in the Red Devils United’s second game of the season when he was hooked at half-time.
At the start of September, this was the view of former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
Martinez has had his fair share of critics since arriving in EnglandCredit: Rex
The TV pundit, 45, said: “I’m convinced this can’t work because the size of him playing in a back four.
“Maybe he could go left-back. Maybe he could play in a back three but in a back four, he cannot play there in the Premier League.”
Martinez shrugged it all off. He said: “It’s just an opinion. I understand when people say that — they show me who they are, you know? It’s not my problem.
“In the beginning, in Argentina, it was the same. But it’s normal because in football, it’s not normal to play as a centre-back with my height. It’s not easy as well.”
Martinez always believed that if he worked on his anticipation and reading of a game it would make up for anything he lacked in his height.

He said: “You have to be very clever on the pitch because you have to be sharp in every situation. If you’re smart you can win the duels.”
“Every day you can learn about it. After the game, you have your feelings about the game, but also you have to watch some videos if you want to improve. In my case, I do that.” More
