I’ve won four Champions League titles but winning the Carabao Cup with Man Utd could be better than any of them

RAPHAEL VARANE has admitted that winning the Carabao Cup with Manchester United could be more rewarding than his four Champions League wins with Real Madrid. The defender, 29, won everything there was to win during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

That includes three La Liga titles, three Spanish Super Cups and four Club World Cups.
Varane was also part of the World Cup winning France squad in 2018, so he is no stranger to a bit of silverware.
But, the Frenchman recently admitted that earning success with United has the potential to feel more rewarding than all of that.
He told Manchester Evening News: “Honestly, it’s better when you’re going up.

“When you are on the top the only thing that can change is to disappoint.
“You can’t do anything better because you’re already there.
“When you can grow with the club and the team, that’s a great feeling.”
Varane also revealed that a win in the Carabao Cup final will only leave the Red Devils hungry for more success in the future.

He added: “I was speaking with Sergio Ramos about it in Madrid, and when we start winning, we won a lot – but before that it was the same.
“We went years without at Madrid, it was a very long time, and when we won it changed not the mentality, but the belief. When you win you start to think ‘okay, we did it, so now we can do it again.’
“It’s about the winning mentality and when you start to win you just want to win and nothing else.
“It doesn’t mean that when you aren’t winning you don’t want to. But you do believe more that it is possible and sometimes you need a bit of luck as well.
“And when you are more confident you bring the luck with you. It’s a positive cycle.”
Man Utd will have the chance to end a six-year trophy drought this afternoon when they take on Newcastle in the final of the Carabao Cup. More

I played for Man Utd and posed for fashion ad with Beckham before switching clubs and having a threesome with team-mate

Thornley revealed he once had a threesome with a team-mate
And one man who was tipped to reach the top had his career curtailed by injury – Ben Thornley.
But the winger did enjoy the high life early on in his career, and even posed with Becks in an advertising photoshoot in the early 90s.
He made his Red Devils debut in the 1993-94 season and big things were expected of Thornley, who was supposedly highly regarded by Sir Alex Ferguson.
But he suffered a devastating injury to his knee in a reserve match against Blackburn, damaging his ligament.

On one occasion he was involved in a threesome with a Dons pal, which he described as “surreal”.
Telling the story in his Autobiography’Tackled’, Thornley wrote: “There was one weekday night when I went out drinking.

Tottenham reveal special boots Harry Kane wearing vs Chelsea after breaking Greaves’ goalscoring record

HARRY KANE has special boots to commemorate becoming Tottenham’s top goalscorer. The club posted a picture of the boots on their social media ahead of the London derby against Chelsea.

The Nike boots have “ALL TIME TOP SCORER” inscribed on them along with the date – “05.02.2023”.
That is the date that he broke Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing record.
On the heel of the boots is also the number 267, the number of goals he has scored for Spurs.
Kane netted the landmark goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Manchester City earlier this month.

Greaves’ record had stood for 53 years.
Tottenham fans loved the picture on social media as one tweeted: “The king 👑 BIG H 🤍💙.”
A second wrote: “Boots are ready, let’s go.”
    A third commented: “Cool.”

A fourth said: “Making it 268 today.”

“There has been so much talk about it in the last couple of weeks and to do it in such a big game is even more special.
“It is a great feeling. When I started playing regularly it wasn’t even in my imagination to score 200 Premier League goals and I have a few more years left so hopefully there are more to come.
“[Jimmy Greaves] is a complete hero, one of the best strikers to play the game so to be in that conversation is special. And to overtake him is a huge moment for me.” More

    “Disaster”
Graham Potter has labelled the start of the second half as a “disaster”.
He says the game was relatively even overall and there was few chances before praising Spurs’ defence.
The manager claims he was content with the first-half and he thought they were in the game at the break but Skipp’s long range goal changed the dynamic of the game.
No win in six is Chelsea’s worst run in ten years and Potter takes “full responsibility” for the shocking run.
    Credit: Sky Sports
    Worst run in 10 years
Chelsea have once since the turn of the year, it’s one win in 11 games and they have failed to score in five of their last six.
The abysmal run leaves them in tenth.
The club supposedly back Potter but patience must be wearing thin.
Boehly made the trip across London to watch yet another poor performance, only made worse by the £300m spend in January.
    Kepa criticised
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has hit out at Kepa Arrizabalaga after his performance today.
The ex-Chelsea striker believes the keeper should have saved Skipp’s shot after he got a hand to it.
He also felt he should have held a timid Emerson shot instead of pushing it out in the build-up to the opener.
The defending at the corner has also been criticised, Chilwell has been slammed for sleeping at the back stick and for team not winning the first ball into the box.
Spurs have netted 12 times from corners this season, the highest in the league.
    Big games to come
Spurs have more season-deciders to come, they face Sheffield United in the FA Cup next.
They then face Wolves in the Prem before the crucial second leg against AC Milan as look to overturn a 1-0 deficit.
As for Chelsea, Potter really needs a win next week at strugglers Leeds.
They are also 1-0 down in the Champions League and have to overturning a first leg defeat versus Dortmund.
    “Deserved”
Harry Kane was impressed by his team’s performance, especially in the second half, calling the win deserved.
Skipp admits a lot of work is done on edge of the box shooting in training, which led to his goal.
It was his first ever for Tottenham and he says he feels “proud”.
    Stat Attack
The stats show Chelsea’s issues, lots of the ball but they don’t do much with it.
Spurs were more clinical and better in both boxes.

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
It’s another defeat for Chelsea. It’s another win for Tottenham.
There’s two sides to the game – Spurs were brilliant, defended well and two of their own scoring in Skipp and Kane is what fans love.
The three points sees them move to 45 points in 4th, four ahead of Newcastle, who have two games in hand.
As for Chelsea, toothless, lacklustre and unconfident.
Potter’s men lacked creativity and never looked like scoring in truth.
They are a disjointed team that clearly has not settled. Potter doesn’t know his best 23-man squad let alone 11.

    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
90+5. Zakaria gives away a cheap foul.
Spurs knock it about to see out the game and seal a big three points.
Chelsea look deflated. It’s another huge confidence knocker.
    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
90+3. Chelsea attack in front of an half empty away end while Spurs chant and mock their rivals.
Romero puts in another outstanding tackle in on Mudryk.
Mount is growing increasingly angry as he commits another foul.
    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
    90. Six minutes added – though the game feels done.
Tottenham want their clean sheet and look like they will get just that.
Chelsea look to get back in the game but again their strikes are blocked.
Since Mudryk has come on more crosses have come in the box, what they lacked earlier.
    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
    89. Porro comes on for Richarlison.
He looks fuming because again he has failed to score.
That is 16 league games now without a goal.
    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
    87. Spurs continue to look solid as they have done all afternoon.
They have not created too much today but ever since Skipp’s long range effort went in they looked confident and the better team.
Emerson has been great, as has Kane and Romero.
    Credit: Reuters
    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
    85. Boehly looks devastated in the stands.
Mudryk delivers a really good cross but there’s nobody in blue in the box attacking it.
It’s really disappointing from a toothless Chelsea side. Pressure grows on Potter.
    Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
    83. Mudryk and Aubameyang come on.
Sterling and Felix go off yet it feels too little too late now.
Chelsea fans head out the away end, they have seen enough.
    GOAL: Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
    82. Spurs score from a corner and it’s that man Harry Kane.
Son whips it in, Dier climbs highest and flicks it to the back post.
Kane, typically, finds space at the back post and taps home from close range.
Game, set and match for a lacklustre Chelsea.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    80. Kicking off again.
A bit of a coming together between Romero and Chilwell, players in white and blue fly in.
In the end, it’s something of nothing.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    79. Kulusevski goes off and Son comes on.
The pace is needed to help Tottenham get out and still give Chelsea something to worry about defensively.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    78. Nice football from Chelsea, they combine well down the flank as Sterling releases Havertz.
The German wins a corner as pressure grows.
Again, it’s dealt with by Spurs but Chelsea are sustaining pressure and remain in their attacking half.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    76. Chelsea keep the ball slowly before picking up the pace of the passes.
Again, they search for the poke through to Havertz and he again doesn’t get there.
Frustration is showing now but Spurs are dropping, eleven men behind the ball.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    74. A bad touch by Romero sees Havertz pounce, the centre-back goes to ground as always in aggressive fashion.
No foul is given and Mount rages.
He is given a yellow for something said to the referee.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    72. Referee Atwell has run off the pitch for seemingly technical problems.
Somebody is fiddling with his wires and trying to work out what the issue is.
We have a delay for now. The last 20 mins could go either way – Spurs may hold out and could get another.
Yet, Chelsea have upped it and Spurs must be careful not to drop too deep and invite pressure.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    70. A soft header goes into Forster’s arms.
Chelsea are attacking more but they remain vulnerable to that deadly counter by the hosts.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    68. Brave and brilliant from Forster.
Clever flicks and tricks from Fernandez, Felix and then Mount.
It’s slid through to Havertz but Spurs’ keeper is out quickly to pinch it from his toes.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    66. Potter claps his side as they again come forward with speed.
The passing is becoming more direct and less sideways but still not chance.
Spurs look dangerous though on the counter with long balls over the top too.
Kane crosses looking for an unmarked Davies, who can’t quite get there.
An entertaining end is set up.
    Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
    64. Nine away games without a win for Chelsea. And it could become ten.
The truth is they have not come close yet to really worrying Spurs.
Chelsea seem to be looking to press more but a wasteful ball by Fernandez sums up their frustration.

And according to The Daily Star, he believes Mac Allister could be the perfect addition to the squad.
Brighton have valued the Argentina international at around £70million, but they could receive much more should a bidding war take place.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are also understood to be keen on the prospect of signing Mac Allister this summer following his impressive World Cup campaign.
The 24-year-old played a pivotal role in Argentina’s World Cup winning squad last year.

And he has continued to shine for Brighton in the Premier League this season with five goals in 19 appearances.
Mac Allister is one of three players that could leave the Amex Stadium in the summer.
Moises Caicedo and Evan Ferguson have also been linked with a move away.
Arsenal pushed to sign Caicedo throughout the January transfer window, but the Seagulls refused to sell the midfielder despite his plea to leave.

Man Utd’s biggest obstacle might be fatigue but there are three areas Ten Hag will target to win the Carabao Cup final

IT’s the first cup final of the season and the start of the ‘squeaky bum time’ period.  Firstly, credit to Newcastle United who have been transformed under Eddie Howe since he was appointed in November 2021.

The Red Devils faced opponents Newcastle earlier on in the season, with the game finishing 0-0 at Old TraffordCredit: Getty
They have a genuine chance of finishing in the Champions League places and compete on Sunday in their first cup final since 1999 – which incidentally was against tomorrow’s opponents Manchester United.
Not many finals are entertaining for the neutral, but with contrasting styles, this is unlikely to make extra-time.
United and Newcastle have faced each other once this season at Old Trafford in the Premier League, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw – but as we saw during the midweek victory against Barcelona, this is a different Man Utd team now.
Such has been the progress under Erik ten Hag, his side are expected to win every game they play – but to win a trophy in his first season in charge, given how they started back in August, would be a superb and richly deserved achievement.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
So what might stop them other than Newcastle’s desire to win some silverware for the first time since 1955?
United’s biggest obstacle might be fatigue.
A gruelling February has seen them play seven times already, the cup final against Newcastle will be their eighth match of the month.
In comparison, Newcastle have played only three times, and have had a week to prepare for the Wembley showpiece.

Marcus Rashford has five goals in the competition
BETTING SPECIAL – BEST FOOTBALL BETTING SITES IN THE UK
Casemiro’s suspension and Antony’s recent injury means that they will almost certainly start and provide a “freshness” that ten Hag will welcome.
In defence Lisandro Martinez should be partnered by multiple Champions League winner Raphael Varane, providing the Frenchman can play a second game in quick succession this week.
Marcus Rashford’s ‘knock’ against Barcelona means he will have a race against time to be fit, but you’d be surprised if he didn’t start given the magnitude of the match.
How will Ten Hag win the Carabao Cup?
Ten Hag praised Newcastle and Howe for how they’ve performed this season but he will want his side to take control of possession as early as possible.
One concern in recent weeks has been the speed in which United start matches.
Against Leeds at Old Trafford it took the home team an hour to get going, and in the Europa League tie against Barcelona on Thursday, it took until just after half-time and Fred’s goal for United to start playing.
Another tactical factor to keep an eye out for is tempo.
If United play quick, one-touch football in that final third, then they’re as dangerous as anyone in Europe, and Newcastle will  find them difficult to stop.
The final match winning aspect of United’s team is the experience and culture Ten Hag has developed.
Varane, Martinez, Casemiro, Antony and De Gea are all tipped to start tomorrow and have all won major trophies in their career.
    Read More on The Sun
If tiredness is a factor or Newcastle start applying pressure, the minutes played and trophies these players have accumulated over the years will be very beneficial.

I’m Graham Potter’s biggest fan but every time I go to Chelsea I put him under pressure… as fans think I’m Thomas Tuchel

GRAHAM POTTER should be given time to turn Chelsea around despite the Blues’ worrying recent run.I have been ‘lucky’ enough to follow the club up and down the country so far this campaign.
Graham Potter is coming under mounting pressure at ChelseaCredit: Getty
Chelsea’s big-money squad hit a new low with defeat to Southampton last weekendCredit: Alamy
Last weekend’s defeat to bottom club Southampton was a new low in a season of lows.
The boos at full-time marked the first time that the majority of match-going Chelsea supporters had turned against the boss.
I fully understand the fan frustrations – two wins in the last 14 games with the quality of players in the squad and the huge investment is not good enough.
But, while I admit I do occasionally feel myself losing faith for a second of two when I see us tenth in the Premier League table, I am a huge fan of Potter and want the under-pressure boss to stay.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
What doesn’t help, when I try to explain why to my disgruntled fellow Blues, is that they all think I’m the spitting image of Thomas Tuchel!
Most of the fanbase would take the German back as manager in an instant.
And on matchdays I’m often serenaded with chants of ‘We’ve got super Tommy Tuchel’ around Stamford Bridge.
Before the Southampton game I met Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, posted the photo to my Twitter account and was inundated with replies saying “what’s Tuchel doing back at the Bridge” and “why’s Tuchel with our midfielder.”

Potter is facing a make-or-break London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.
And the last thing he needs is the away section singing our old boss’s name after catching a glimpse of me!
What hasn’t helped Potter is succeeding a world-class manager and firm fan-favourite in Tuchel who delivered the clubs second Champions League.
The German represented the club impeccably, building up a real rapport with fans, especially during sanctions on old owner Roman Abramovich, where he became the spokesperson which endeared him to supporters even more meaning it was always going to be a tough act to follow.
The club is in transition having been sold to Todd Boehly’s consortium last summer.
There have been wholesale changes on and off the pitch and everyone in key positions at the club are learning on the job, which is far from ideal.
Chelsea is always a pressurised environment, and Potter has been dealt a really tough hand with injuries to key first team players, while trying to bed in multiple new signings and juggling an oversized squad.
These aren’t excuses, they are just reality. I believe ANY manager would be facing similar struggles.
I accept that, whatever way you dress it up, the current situation is unacceptable and must improve or Potter will find himself out of a job.
Time and patience are two things which aren’t synonymous with fans, particularly Chelsea’s after watching years of hiring and firing under Abramovich.
The club, under Boehly’s ownership, are looking to move away from that mentality and seem to be thinking more long-term, building a successful project with a settled manager.
Whether Potter is the right man to take the club forward in it’s new era remains to be seen.
    Read More on The Sun
But it is really important the owner’s stick to their principles and don’t pull the trigger at the first time of asking.
All I ask for is three points on Sunday… and to remain the only Tuchel at Chelsea games. More

Top ten managers who never played football – including FOUR former Chelsea bosses

JOSE MOURINHO ‘sacked’ himself as a player – but he’s not the only top manager who couldn’t hack it on the pitch.”Don’t do as I play, do as I say” might be the motto of the ten we’ve selected – after they defied their inability or poor luck as footballers to make it big as bosses.
Jose Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas have had eye-popping careers as managers but might cover their eyes when it comes to their playing daysCredit: EPA
Four of them managed Chelsea and two of them Liverpool.
And one’s become the youngest Bundesliga manager in history.
The one thing they seem to have in common is making an early commitment to coaching.
Here are the tales of the managers who, rather than has-beens, are a bunch of never-was’s.
    read more football stories
    Gerard Houllier
The Frenchman was not known to have had any professional career.
However, he played for seven years at amateur club Le Touquet, where he would get his first managerial job between 1973 and 1976.
He would then guide amateur club Noeux-les-Mines to the second tier before moving to Lens.

A successful spell there would see him take over at PSG before he became his national team boss but failed to guide them to the World Cup.
    Most read in Football
Later, he would guide Liverpool to two League Cups, an FA Cup and a Uefa Cup before being replaced by Rafa Benitez.
Two Ligue 1 titles with Lyon would follow before he finished his career with an unsuccessful spell at Aston Villa.
    Arrigo Sacchi
“I didn’t know that to be a jockey, you have to have been a horse,” was Sacchi’s response when asked about managing with no playing experience.
One of the greatest bosses of all time, Sacchi earned his money as a shoe salesman while managing his local club because he wasn’t good enough to play for them.
Italian legend Arrigo Sacchi jockeyed for position before becoming an iconic manager for clubs and countryCredit: Getty
And indeed he galloped to glory as a manager.
Having started at Fusignano aged 27 in 1973, he reached the big time with Parma in 1987, later bossing AC Milan twice, Italy, Atletico Madrid and finally with Parma again.
He guided the Azzurri to the 1994 World Cup final, also winning Serie A in his first full year at Milan.
    Jose Mourinho
The Special One’s first brutal tactical decision was to end his own playing carer.
Deciding he lacked the pace and power to thrive as a striker, Mourinho quit the lower-league Portugal game to coach at a school and then for hometown club Vitória de Setúbal.
But while captaining his last team, Comércio e Indústria, he put football in perspective by saving the life of a team-mate trapped in a burning car.
Mourinho, whose dad won a single cap for Portugal, sprang to prominence with coaching/translator roles under English managerial legend Bobby Robson.
He launched his own life in the hot-seat at Benfica and Uniao de Leiria before fame struck at Porto from 2002-4, with two Portuguese titles plus Champions League glory.
Since then he’s won silverware aplenty at Chelsea twice, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United, before completing the clean sweep of European trophies with current club Roma.
    Carlos Alberto Parreira
The three-time Brazil manager bossed five different nations at the World Cup – despite not having a shred of a playing career.
The 1994 World Cup winner even launched his career aged 24, bossing Ghana in 1967.
Apart from four spells in charge of home-country giants Fluminense, he was also entrusted by Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, plus South Africa when they hosted the 2010 World Cup.
Parreira only managed twice in Europe, with Valencia and then taking Fenerbahçe to the Turkish crown.
    Avram Grant
Even in this list of managerial early-starters, the Israeli deserves special mention.
Grant coached the youth team of home-town club Hapoel Petah Tikva at the age of 18.
He finally landed the top job there 14 years later, winning the Toto Cup twice.
Roman Abramovich’s pal Avram Grant only lasted a season at ChelseaCredit: Getty
Grant most notably bossed Maccabi Tel Aviv and Israel before his friend Roman Abramovich made him Chelsea boss in 2007.
But runners-up spot in both the Prem and Champions League failed to save him from the axe at the end of his first season.
After that, he bossed Portsmouth, West Ham and Partizan Belgrade, followed by Ghana and, since, December 2022, Zambia.
    Andre Villas Boas
Never quite the Special One II, but the Portuguese was given his first off-the-field job aged SIXTEEN by then-Porto chief Bobby Robson.
AVB, already fluent in English, found himself chatting to Robson as they lived in the same apartment block.
And the Newcastle legend appointed him to Porto’s observation department.
Robson then helped Villas-Boas storm through his qualifications, getting the C licence in Scotland at 17, the B a year later and the top-level a licence aged 19.
Two years later he took the obvious career choice of becoming… technical director for the British Virgin Islands.
But AVB then became Mourinho’s assistant at Porto, Chelsea and Inter before himself bossing Academica and Porto, with whom he won the treble of top-flight title, Portugal Cup and Europa league in 2010-11.
But he failed to win silverware in a year apiece at Chelsea and Tottenham.
AVB went on to lift the Russian crown with Zenit but was then trophyless with Shanghai SIPG and Marseille.
    Brendan Rodgers
The Northern Irishman is different from many on this list – as his promising playing career was ended by a genetic knee condition aged 20.
The ex-schoolboy international defender began with local team Ballymena United before starring for Reading reserves until quitting as a pro in 1993.

Unusually, he stayed on as a Royals’ youth coach while playing for non-League clubs Newport IOW, Witney Town and Newbury and working at John Lewis.
Mourinho then lured him to coach Chelsea’s Academy before he impressed in charge of Watford, Reading and Swansea with stylish, tactically-astute football.
He missed out on honours during three years bossing Liverpool, but won the League and Cup double in successive season for Celtic, earning a Prem return with Leicester in 2019.
He steered he Foxes to historic FA Cup glory two years later.
But where might he be now if he hadn’t had to stop playing so early?
    Maurizio Sarri
The Italian’s purely-amateur playing career had its “if only” moments – even after he had failed trials with Torino and Fiorentina.
The centre-back was a one-club man with local team Figline until injuries led to his retirement aged 30.
His nearly moment came at 19 when a move to Montevarchi was only foiled by Figline demanding a massive compensation fee.
Sarri also rejected a move to Pontedera.
And since turning to coaching in 1990 he’s managed TWENTY-ONE clubs.
Guiding the 17th of those teams, Empoli, to Serie B runners-up spot in 2014, helped transform his progress.
He moved on to Napoli, Chelsea (where he won the Europa League), Juventus (Serie A winners) and now Lazio.
    Julian Nagelsmann
Like Rodgers, the German’s hopes of a decent playing career were wrecked by injury before he really got started.
He captained 1860 Munich’s youth team and made it into the reserve-team squad, only to suffer knee problems.

Similar misfortune after switching to Thomas Tuchel’s Augsburg, so he stopped playing aged 20, becoming a scout and studying sports science.
Spells in youth coaching at 1860 Munich and 1899 Hoffenheim followed.
And in 2016, aged 28, Hoffenheim made him the youngest manager in Bundesliga history and he somehow kept them up
After bossing RB Leipzig from 2019 to 2021, he’s now gunning for his second successive Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich.
    Ron Noades
The late Londoner was completely devoid of a playing or coachign background, instead entering football through investment as a businessman.
He was involved in the ownership of FOUR clubs in turn- starting with non-league Southall.
He then became part of Wimbledon’s early rise up the lower divisions as chairman – famously appointing Dave Bassett as boss.
Moving to a similar position at Selhurst Park, he oversaw arguably Crystal Palace’s brightest ever spell.
They won promotion to the top flight in 1989, reached the FA Cup final the following year and came third at the highest level in 1991.
But he sparked a furore that year with comments about the racial mix of the Eagles’ team, with key men Ian Wright, Mark Bright and Andy Gray departing in the fall-out.
Palace went topsy-turvy after that – none more so than when Noades sold his interest to Mark Goldberg and also became CARETAKER-MANAGER, albeit failing to save them from the drop.
Terry Venables came in as his successor and Noades left the club – ending up as chairman and then manager of Brentford.

He won promotion to the third tier in his first term.
But one of the more controversial careers in chairmanship/management ended in 2000, when he sold his majority shareholding to fans’ group Bees United and quit both roles. More
