Man Utd ratings: Casemiro’s introduction injects life into Red Devils but Weghorst looks like competition winner

MANCHESTER UNITED came from a goal behind to book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over West Ham.The Hammers failed to capitalise on their chances, with Michail Antonio being denied by David de Gea twice.

Said Benrahma did manage to give the away side the leas though, albeit in controversial fashion.
The Algerian wizard waved his wand and whipped the ball into the top right corner after United stopped playing after believing the ball went out of play.
West Ham failed to capitalise and Erik ten Hag tinkered his team.
On came the big guns and momentum swung in their favour.

    David de Gea – 7
Pulled off a string of fine stops, but didn’t have a prayer against Benrahma’s controversial strike.
    Diogo Dalot – 5
Hugely improved this season but one of those left standing for West Ham’s goal.
    Victor Lindelof – 5
Lucky to get away with it when Soucek outjumped him. No shock when he was eventually replaced by Martinez.
    Harry Maguire – 5
Pointed a lot, lunged a little, which earned a card. At times looked as rusty as the tin man.

    Tyrell Malacia – 6
By far United’s best defender, which wasn’t saying a great deal given how the others performed.
    Marcel Sabitzer – 5
One snapshot drew a fine save from Areola and covered a lot of ground, but no more than adequate.
    Scott McTominay – 6
Determined to make his mark – in every way. A driving force but hooked at half time.
    Bruno Fernandes – 5
Given licence to roam, but some way off his best. Never stamped his presence on things.
    Alejandro Garnacho – 7
Lively down the left, especially in the second half, and got his reward with that late winner.
    Wout Weghorst – 4 United’s worst
Missed an absolute sitter. Luckily for him he was offside. Starting to look like a competition winner.
    Antony – 5
Curled one early effort over, but frustratingly rarely takes his man on. Allegedly also has a right foot. Hooked.

Sheff Utd 1 Tottenham 0: Spurs knocked OUT of the FA Cup as Ndiaye sends Championship high-flyers into quarters

TRUST Tottenham to serve up a car crash of a performance in this week of all weeks.Spurs announced on Tuesday a 15-year “strategic partnership” with Formula One, a tie-up which would see them build London’s longest indoor electric go-kart track beneath the South Stand.

Harry Kane looks on in disappointement as his side were knocked out of the FA CupCredit: Getty
It raised a few eyebrows among fans, who will likely be appeased if it end up helping their team’s drive for success on the pitch.
Yet now, thanks to sub Iliman Ndiaye’s fine, late solo goal, their side are out of the race for their most likely route to silverware for another season.
It was no more than Spurs deserved, who were poor throughout against what was effectively Sheffield United’s reserve side.
They rarely threatened, even when Harry Kane came on midway through the second half – though the England skipper did fluff his line with an injury-time header.

Both these sides were missing their managers from the dugout.
Antonio Conte was still back in Turin recovering from gallbladder surgery, with his assistant Cristian Stellini once again deputising.
The Tottenham chief is expected to return this week, though possibly not until Sunday, the day after his side’s trip to Wolves.
While Blades chief Paul Heckingbottom was serving the first of a three-match ban given for volleying the fourth official’s board out of his hands in fury during last month’s home defeat to Middlesbrough.

Spurs sprang a few surprises with their team selection.
Richarlison started through the middle, despite Stellini hinting in the pre-match press conference that he would not, while Kane did not start at all, despite Stellini hinting he would.
In-form Emerson Royal was also ruled out with a minor knee injury – though he should be fine for Wolves on Saturday – meaning deadline-day signing Pedro Porro came in.
Sheffield United’s focus was clearly more on promotion to the Premier League, which was understandable given their seven-point cushion to third spot in the Championship.
With a trip to rivals Blackburn to come on Saturday lunchtime, Paul Heckingbottom opted to leave big-hitters including Sander Berge, Iliman Ndiaye and Oli McBurnie on the bench.
Instead, academy lad Andre Brooks was handed his first start.
But it was the 19-year-old’s loose pass which handed Spurs their first chance of the game.
It went  straight to the lesser-spotted Lucas Moura, who dribbled into the box and cut it back for Richarlison, but the ex-Everton man’s effort was blocked by Jack Robinson.
Porro suffered a Spurs debut to forget in the 4-1 lashing at Leicester last month, having signed on loan from Sporting Lisbon with an obligation to buy for £45million.
You feared how the Spaniard might cope in the wind and driving rain against a canny, Championship side like United.
But he showed some neat touches, an intent to get forward and when he was cleaned out by Robinson’s firm-but-fair challenge, encouragingly, he just got up and got on with it.
Davinson Sanchez was playing behind him and it was the Colombian who teed up Richarlison for Spurs’ best chance of the half.
Brazil’s No9 beat the offside trap to race in down the right-hand side of the box, but smashed his shot from an acute angle over the bar.
Moura then clipped the top of the crossbar when standing the ball up to the back post, looking for his compatriot Richarlison, causing the home fans to breathe a sigh of relief.
That was then exactly what Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was doing when his weak header let in Ismaila Coulibaly.
Fortunately for Spurs, the Malian shanked his shot into the side netting, blowing the best chance of the half.
But after a run of games WITHOUT individual errors cropping up, Conte will have been worried to see bad, old habits creeping back in as he watched on from his sofa.
There was no VAR at this game and lucky for George Baldock, as the Blades right-back caught Ivan Perisic on the shin with a nasty tackle but got away with it.
He was not so fortunate soon after the break when hacking down Son Heung-min and was booked, and the same fate awaited Pape Matar Sarr for a late challenge on Tommy Doyle.
Things were not going well for Richarlison, who fired a shot so far wide it got the ‘What the bleeping hell was that’ treatment, before his attempted cross deflected back off him for a goal-kick.
His frustrating night was brought to an end seconds later as Kane entered the fray.
But the England captain’s introduction made little difference to Tottenham’s toothless attack and the home side grew in belief.
They brought on their own star striker in Ndiaye and with ten minutes to go, he made the difference.
In a match that was the football equivalent of go-karting, he provided the one moment of Formula One-esque quality, weaving through a crowd of Spurs defenders in the opposition penalty box before burying it in at Fraser Forster’s near post.
Heckingbottom, wearing his ear buds, applauded from up in the stands.

Conte no doubt will have been screaming at the TV back home, frustrated that his side were not at the races once again in what has been an infuriatingly inconsistent season.
The Blades shocked Spurs with a 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane that led them to the competition’s quarter-finals thanks to Iliman Ndiaye’s winner on 79 minutes. More

Arsenal 4 Everton 0: Martinelli double sees Gunners hammer Toffees to continue title push and leave Dyche’s men in peril

IT was Bukayo Saka who created a slice of history by inspiring Arsenal to a unique century. And it was a bungling Everton defence who threatened to trash the longest-running fixture in  English football.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring with a brilliant finishCredit: Rex
Saka notched a quick-fire goal and assist to exact revenge on Sean Dyche’s Everton – as Arsenal became the first English club to register 100 league wins over the same opposition.
It helps that Arsenal versus Everton has been played for 68 consecutive top-flight seasons – but there may not be a 69th because the Toffees are a shambles.
Dyche had started a serious Arsenal wobble when his side notched a shock-and-awe win over Mikel Arteta’s men on his maiden outing as Goodison boss just three and a half weeks ago.
But their chances of a sustained revival look bleak because, despite their vast spending under Farhad Moshiri, the Premier League’s worst-run club don’t have any goalscorers and they can’t defend for toffee.
Defeat on Merseyside on February 4 had sparked a run of just one point from a possible nine as Arsenal briefly lost the leadership to Manchester City.
But now, courtesy of Saka’s opener, a double from Gabriel Martinelli and a Martin Odegaard strike, the Gunners are five points clear at the summit after three straight wins.
Arteta, who captained Everton when Everton were Everton, will have taken little pleasure from the identity of the opposition – but he relished his side’s ruthlessness after they had suffered 40 minutes of frustration.
As at Leicester on Saturday, Arteta left Eddie Nketiah on the bench, employing Leandro Trossard as a false nine.

Arsenal put in a dominating display
And there was a lack of early punch about Arsenal, lacking a focal point in attack.
Dyche had handed a first Premier League start of the season to Michael Keane – his most recent one had come in a 5-1 gubbing here last term.
This added to Everton’s Burnleyfication, with three Dyche’s former Clarets players in his starting line-up.
The only early highlight was Dyche bawling out fourth official David Coote after a perceived foul had gone unpunished and hundreds of Londoners behind the Everton dugout responding by yelling out the surname of former children’s TV presenter Brian Cant.
Undeterred, Dyche continued to scream and holler, threatening to burst out of his dark suit with the demeanour of an angry bouncer policing a very short guest list.
Out on the pitch, Amadou Onana kept falling over and everyone kept shouting at him. It was mainly shouting, really, not a lot of football.
Martin Odegaard got involved in the scoring actCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
Odegaard was the key man for Arsenal
It wasn’t exactly ‘school of science’ stuff but Everton were effective enough early on – defending deep, tackling hard, going long and threatening on their occasional breaks until the ball found Neal Maupay and it all broke down.
Then, on 40 minutes, the first meaningful attempt of the night – and the opening goal.
Oleksandr Zinchenko caught out his fellow Ukrainian Vitali Mykolenko with a straight pass, Saka seized on it, turning and walloping into the roof of the net, beating his England team-mate Jordan Pickford at his near post.
Dyche seemed to do an irate Timewarp in his technical area. Everton had barely been threatened until that moment.
Suddenly, it was two – due to an extraordinary brain freeze from Idrissa Gueye and a VAR who finally found in Arsenal’s favour.
Gueye had won possession but then – facing goal near the edge of the Everton box – the midfielder simply decided to stop playing football for a couple of seconds.
He looked up to play a simple pass, then thought better of it, as if two elite forwards like Saka and Martinelli might not converge on him. But they did.
Martinelli now has four goals in his last three gamesCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
Saka nicked it off his toes, Martinelli drilled past Pickford and after a linesman’s offside flag had been raised, VAR Tony Harrington overturned the decision and the Emirates erupted into belated bedlam.
Arsenal had been robbed by officials against Brentford and Leicester recently, so this was a welcome if only to disprove some of their supporters’ barking-mad internet conspiracy theories.
Unsurprisingly, Dyche hooked Gueye at half-time and sent on Mason Holgate. Arteta replaced Jorginho with Thomas Partey, for his first major run-out since injury.
James Tarkowski hammered Martin Odegaard with a ‘reducer’ and was booked and Dyche doubtless recalled glory nights at Turf Moor.
Maupay, who was hopeless, was soon withdrawn to howls from the home supporters after his lengthy list of ‘previous’ with Arsenal as a Brighton player.
Dwight McNeil forced a decent save from Aaron Ramsdale, but Trossard and Martinelli both duffed good opportunities for Arteta’s side.
The third soon arrived, though, Xhaka releasing Trossard down the left, the Belgian cutting back for Odegaard to thud home via the flailing boot of Tarkowski.
    Read More on The Sun
Then Zinchenko found Nketiah, on as a sub, and he cut back for Martinelli, who prodded home.
Dyche was quieter, now. Perhaps wondering how on earth Everton will survive this. Perhaps wondering why on earth he took the gig in the first place.  More

Aston Villa forced to pay ex-owner £10MILLION after former chairman made bizarre promise

And although Xia sold Villa to current billionaire owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens’ NSWE Group in 2018 with the club on the brink of administration, Xia’s liability to Lerner fell on the club.
A statement released by Villa, to coincide with the release of the club’s 2021-22 accounts, revealed: “Exceptional administrative expenses included a payment of £10m to Randolph D Lerner following the retaining of Premier League status for the third consecutive season since promotion.”
Lerner also pocketed a £30m payment after Villa won promotion back to the top flight four years ago, as part of the same 2016 deal with Xia.
Villa reported a £400,000 profit for the financial year, despite a drop of around £5m in revenues to £178.4m.

However the bottom line was massively boosted by the £100m British record transfer of Jack Grealish to Manchester City, with the club spending £203.5 on signings including Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Lucas Digne.
Meanwhile, Gustavo Goni, the agent of Villa’s World Cup winning goalie Emi Martinez, has denied there is a rift between his client and Villa manager Unai Emery, describing their relationship as “rock solid”.
Martinez has made it clear he wants to play in the Champions League but Goni told Italian media: “His relationship with Emery couldn’t be better. He is a leader of the group.
“He would like to play and win the Champions League, let’s hope he can do it with Aston Villa.”

Premier League urged to re-investigate Newcastle’s Saudi takeover after stunning court revelation

THE Premier League is under pressure to re-investigate Newcastle’s takeover after US court revelations that the club’s owner is part of the Saudi government.Prem bosses gave permission for the controversial £300million takeover in October 2021 after insisting they had “legally binding assurances” that the Saudi government did not control the club.

Lawyers for Toon chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan in the US court case admitted their clients were representatives of the Saudi governmentCredit: Getty
But those pledges were thrown into doubt after stunning revelations in a US court case in the bitter golf battle between the Saudi-funded LIV Tour and the PGA.
In a bid to avoid giving evidence, lawyers for Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and the Saudi Public Investment Fund admitted their clients were representatives of the Saudi government.
LIV lawyers said: “PIF and His Excellency Yasir al-Rumayyan are not ordinary third parties subject to basic discovery relevance standards.
“They are a sovereign instrumentality of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a sitting minister of the Saudi government.

“Thus they cannot be compelled to provide testimony and documents in a US proceeding.”
Those arguments failed to impress Judge Susan van Kaplan, who ruled in favour of the PGA and ordered the Saudis to give a sworn deposition testimony.
But more critically it appears that LIV’s legal team were making claims that run diametrically opposite to those made to justify the Prem allowing the Newcastle deal to take place.
It has sparked anger from Prem rivals who are furious that the Prem failed to block the deal in the first place.

As part of the final discussions between Prem bosses and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, concerns were raised over “which entities would own and/or have the ability to control the club” before the ownership guarantees were given.
But at the time Prem chief executive Richard Masters also insisted: “If we find evidence to the contrary we can remove the consortium as owners of the club in accordance with the rules.
“That is understood. There are ways of ensuring we are comfortable and satisfied and that remains the case.”
Masters will now face calls from rival Prem clubs to rule on whether he must intervene following the legal moves in a court in California.
Rival club chiefs reacted with disbelief and anger and are now expecting Masters and Prem bosses to act.
One club boss said: “This looks like a complete reversal of the position we were told was the reason the deal was approved.
“Surely the Premier League has to get involved here and look at this issue again.”
A Prem spokesman last night declined to make any comment when asked to respond to the latest development.
But the demands for action will concern Newcastle fans just days after their first cup final in 24 years – Sunday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester United.
The Toon board gave a public show of “gratitude” in an open letter to fans, many of whom helped clean up Trafalgar Square after gathering there before the match.
The board said: “The scenes around Wembley and inside the stadium on Sunday were remarkable and beyond inspiring.
