Chelsea 1 Arsenal 1: Neto’s strike cancels out Martinelli opener as Gunners drop more points in title race

NO London club has won the Premier League in the last seven seasons and we can safely say that run will be extended to eight. The capital’s two best teams contested a derby with plenty of ferocity but precious little class and both are now nine points adrift of runaway leaders Liverpool.Chelsea and Arsenal shared the points in a drab London derbyCredit: GettyBoth sides hit the target in a 1-1 been applauded to the high heavens for making some sense of the Chelsea madhouse, he is yet to score a win against any of the ‘Big Six’ clubs. And Mikel Arteta – who was finally able to field a full-strength side here – has seen his Arsenal team slide out of the title hunt by failing to win any of their last four Premier League matches.Pedro Neto drilled home an equaliser to cancel out Gabriel Martinelli’s second-half opener after Kai Havertz, the man who won Chelsea the European Cup in 2021, had a first-half effort ruled out for a fag-paper offside.  Arteta’s frustrations were compounded by Bukayo Saka limping off late on – suggesting the England winger might miss England’s games against Greece and Ireland.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLAlthough given that the England manager Thomas Tuchel isn’t even turning up for those, few will be too concerned about that.Chelsea have won only once in five league matches although the Blues can point to a marked improvement from the last time had been a clear, and understandable, Chelsea policy of suffocation towards Saka – who spent much of the afternoon being pursued by Marc Cucurella, with the eagerness of a King Charles spaniel after a Chelsea vs Arsenal LIVE SCORE: Blues and Gunners share a point as Neto equalises after Martinelli opener – updates

PEDRO NETO scored his first Chelsea goal as the Blues drew with Arsenal in a feisty London derby. The Portuguese drilled in an effort from outside the box after Gabriel Martinelli had slammed the Gunners into the lead from close range.Earlier, Chelsea defender Malo Gusto had missed a sitter from just a yard out while ex-Blue Kai Havertz had a goal correctly ruled out for offside.FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSFollow our live blog below…Potter on ArsenalThe former Brighton and Chelsea boss also gave his thoughts on the Edu Gaspar situation. It’s that alignment with recruitment because if you continually make good decisions in recruitment you’ve got a chance with your environment and a chance with your team.If you make the wrong decisions you’ve got the opposite and there’s problems. It always works in tandem. You need good recruitment, you also need good coaching. Mikel has done that really well, he’s created an environment at Arsenal where there is a standard and a clear way they want to play. That makes it easier for the recruitment team to make decisions.Ultimately, whoever comes in has to be aligned with Mikel and has to be on the same wavelength, take the pressure of Mikel and take the workload off him but still be aligned and make the right decisions.Graham PotterCopy linkCopied’Chelsea expect to win’Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter was in the Sky Sports studio and had his say on the current Blues side under new boss Enzo Maresca.Chelsea have identified that they want to sign young players. They want to build a team that has a lot of growth in it. Apart from the first window after the new owners came in they’ve switched to a more younger player profile. They’ve got a coach with a clear style of play so every window now they can be making decisions about what qualities they need on the pitch but also what they need off the pitch. That’s the qualities you need when building a team. It is about the talent but also what you bring as a person and if you can handle the situation here at Chelsea. In the end you have to win, Chelsea expect to win. They have to grow into that or they have to look for solutions to bring people from outside who can help them win.Graham PotterCopy linkCopiedOdegaard impressesMartin Odegaard showed Arsenal exactly what he was missing on his return to the side and registered his eighth open play assist of the calendar year – only Cole Palmer (11) and Mo Salah (9) have more.Unbelievable… back doing what I love. It has been a long time, the longest I have been out of football in my whole life.It felt good to be back out there although disappointed we didn’t get the win. We’ve done a lot of work with the fitness coaches and physios pushing me every day. I wanted to come back as soon as possible.I felt okay today. I didn’t expect it [to play 90 minutes]. I’ve only done three training sessions with the team or something. It is a long season, long way to go. We had a tough period in December last season and came back. We know the quality and mentality we have and we just have to keep going.Martin OdegaardCopy linkCopiedCole Palmer strugglesIt was not the best day for Cole Palmer who was crowded out in the No 10 position and struggled to get anything going at Stamford Bridge. He created just one chance, completed only one dribble out of four and none of his four crosses found the mark.Palmer had just one key pass and completed only 77 per cent of his passes, while only one of his four shots were on target – with two poor free-kicks going straight into the wall. His heat map isn’t the best, either.Copy linkCopiedMore from MarescaThe Italian made it also made it clear that Chelsea have a ways to go to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Man City (despite new Liverpool boss Arne Slot being top of the Prem). It is the way we want to do the things. We are Chelsea, so it is important to send this message. There are managers that have been clubs for five and nine years so we are behind them.Enzo MarescaCopy linkCopied’The performance is important for us’Enzo Maresca appeared to be pleased with a point against Arsenal, stating: I enjoyed it, absolutely. The performance was good. We know them quite well and we competed pretty well. The performance is very important for us in this moment and it was good. We can rest now and go again. The performance from Pedro [Neto] was very good, all of them, complete. We played in the way we wanted to, brave, and try and play from the back always.Enzo MarescaCopy linkCopiedTrouble for Cole?Cole Palmer was spotted limping out of Stamford Bridge after the game. The England star had been a doubt in the build up to the game but was eventually cleared to play and completed the 90 minutes. It would now appear he is a doubt for Lee Carsley’s squad next week.Copy linkCopiedArteta on OdegaardThe Arsenal boss was full of praise for his star man, who was excellent as he completed 90 minutes and provided an assist. Our player has been out for six weeks and barely trained with the team.To be able to play at this level in the Premier League tells you how much he looks after himself and the leadership and character he has.Everything flows better with players like this. Today we clicked much better. You could see everything was flowing but again it is about winning.”What we have found is that every day we have had to change something big, you know, the engine, the wheels, steering wheel because we’ve had problem after problem.Normally the team goes down but this team has unbelievable energy and spirit to play.”Arteta on OdegaardCopy linkCopiedMore from ArtetaOn the Neto goal: “It is a second phase set piece and we were disorganised. “We don’t reorganise quick enough and you can’t allow the pass that way. “You need the quality of Neto to do it but our standards were not good enough.”Copy linkCopiedProud Arteta disappointed by outcomeArsenal boss Mikel Arteta revealed the pride felt by his players’ performance, but also couldn’t hide his disappointment that they failed to register the win they deserved. The Spanish coach highlighted the manner in which they defended the Chelsea equaliser as one of the only moments in which they didn’t measure up to the club’s high standards. The disappointment of not getting three points is bigger, and it will be even bigger tomorrow after watching it back because once again the team has turned up. I think we dominated them, and I thought we were the better team in many phases. After going ahead, I am very disappointed with the way we conceded the goal – it’s so poor! Man Utd 3 Leicester 0: Ruud van Nistelrooy signs off with a win as Bruno Fernandes marks 250th game with classy goal

WHAT A DAY for Bruno Fernandes and what a send-off for Ruud van Nistelroory. The interim boss could be gone by the end of next week with Ruben Amorim on his way in with his own backroom staff.Ruud van Nistelrooy signed off as United boss in styleCredit: GettyBruno Fernandes as scored four in four under Van NistelrooyCredit: ReutersThe skipper fired in a brilliant curler from the edge of the boxCredit: ReutersThe second goal went in off Victor KristiansenCredit: GettyAlejandro Garnacho netted a brilliant thirdCredit: GettyVan Nistelrooy wants to stay in some capacity, the fans and players want him to stay too but it will be down to Amorim.Perhaps the Dutch goalscoring legend’s own ambitions to be boss at Old Trafford one day may tip the balance. No new boss wants that looming over their shoulder.Let’s be honest, it’s not like this is the most secure job in world football as it is.READ MORE ON MAN UTDThe incoming Head Coach from Sporting Lisbon will be the sixth incumbent in the Manchester United hot seat since Sir Alex bowed out back in 2013.That’s apart from interim boss Ralf Rangnick and the other three who filled a gap; Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick and now Van Nistelrooy.Little wonder the office door just has the word ‘manager’ on at Carrington rather than their actual names in these cost- cutting times under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.I mean how much do those golden letters cost? Most read in FootballTalking of Ratcliffe it was the part owner now running things at the club who was on the pitch before kick-off to present Fernandes with a framed shirt to mark this, his 250th appearance for the club. One presumes, the club paid for it, not the player. So the stage was set for the 30-year-old Red Devils captain to celebrate the occasion in style, and how he did just that.He scored the opening goal, he forced the second although it was credited as an own goal off Victor Kristiansen. Then he provided the assist for the third for Alejandro Garnacho. For Fernandes that is 83 goals and 72 assists for the Portuguese ace since he made his own switch from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.Undoubtedly he is the best signing in the post Sir Alex era.To be fair that bar is not terribly high, but he has been an example to the rest from the day he walked into Old Trafford. The man with the armband can often be the main target after the manager when things are going wrong here. They have been for some time. But have no doubt about his contribution to this club in difficult times. His application and devotion to the badge on and off the pitch is huge.Critics use his arm flapping histrionics as a stick to beat him with but it is because he cares so much.He opened the scoring here against woeful Leicester in the 17th  minute. He received a thrown-in on the left from Noussair Mazraoui and then after a quick exchange of passes with Amad Diallo, curled a shot from the edge of the area into the far bottom corner. Off to the corner flag in celebration, why is it always the corner flag? The chants of ‘Bruno’ went up and his teammates all flocked to him.A great start, but this being the modern day Manchester United the opposition will always have a chance to get back into it.So it was in the 28th minute when Facundo Buonanotte put Wilfrd Nididi clean through but Andre Onana was out to him and smothered his shot. Then when Buonanotte himself got a sight on goal a fantastic tackle by Mazraoui took the ball away from him.Reds rattled, but not for long as number two followed in the 38th minute.Mazraoui provided the cross from the left and there was Fernandes to get a flick with the top of his thigh and the ball went in off Victor Kristiansen. The captain got the congratulations even if it officially went down to the Leicester player as an own goal.  It was as well Fernandes was a menace in front of goal because Rasmus Hojlund certainly was not.Let’s say the reception was generous when he was finally hooked in the 75th minute but not quite as lacklustre as that which greeted his replacement Joshua Zirkzee. After all the millions spent in the last decade is that what this famous club has ended up with as striking options? So that’s three wins and a draw for Van Nistelrooy who had his name chanted loudly as this game came to a close. In his programme notes he had talked about the emotions of managing the club for this short period. He wrote: “I can honestly say that my love for you all has only grown during this period.”From tomorrow, I will be getting behind our new head coach, Ruben Amorim, and I urge everyone who loves the club to do the same.”READ MORE SUN STORIESRemind you of anything, Sir Alex 11 years ago perhaps and ten months later David Moyes was gone. The revolving door continues to spin…next.THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY..The Sun is your go to destination for the best football, boxing and MMA news, real-life stories, jaw-dropping pictures and must-see video.Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheSunFootball and follow us from our main Twitter account at @TheSunFootball.
